This was one of my favorite meals in Alabama. Food was excellent and very cheap given the quantity and quality of food. The place is kind of a dive establishment so don't go there expecting great ambience you pretty much just order at a counter wait for your food and either sit down there and eat or just take off. We opted to do the former since we had nowhere else to run to. Ended up getting the sampler and the chicken plate. The pork was excellent. Really everything was very good I had no complaints at all but I especially loved the okra The fried okra was excellent .so were the the chicken. Well we were sitting the line out the door kept growing. That was a sign that these guys know how to cook. The price was very good considering the quantity and quality of food. As good as the reviews say. Went at the end of the day and lots of things were sold out--and this was a Monday! But they still had wings and, yes, they were awesome--the best I've ever had. Good BBQ, with a couple a unique dishes worth considering. First, the white BBQ sauce on chicken. One of our dining party declared it "the best sauce I've ever had on chicken". The sauce is not too heavy, with enough pepper to give a bite but not overwhelm the dish. Second is the signature Pork n Greens. This is a multi-layered experience starting with onion rings, proceeding down into pork, then greens, and finally a base layer of cheese grits. Strike that: "multi-layered" sounds too haute-cuisine. It's a pile experience. As soon as you dig in, the onion rings get mixed up in the pork and bits of greens get in there. Arguably gross, especially to eight year olds, but I found it a satisfying mix. Plenty of calories from the usual culprits (meat, cheese, fried), so if you're trying to limit calories, choose something else. If you need to illustrate "hole-in-the-wall", here's your place. Lunch in Birmingham could not get any better than this place! Saw's Soul Kitchen is an amazing BBQ joint with some hearty meats and fried goods. My friend and I rolled in here for a weekend lunch, and I immediately fell in love with the decor. Plenty of license plates and memorabilia lined the walls and its extensive menu written so nicely in chalk near the back. Immediately, I notice that prices here are reasonable, and the options seemed endless. We each got a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($10.50) with a side of fried green tomatoes and pickles. I don't know how to explain how delicious the pork inside these sandwiches were! Meat was juicy, BBQ sauces on the table were exceptional, and the buns themselves gave me a run for my money. The fried green tomatoes here are excellent as well. One side order comes with four slices, and while you get more with the fried pickles, the juiciness of the tomatoes blows that out of the ball park. Saw's Soul Kitchen was the best spot we could have gone to for our mini adventure in Birmingham. read more

When I travel to Birmingham I have a usual BBQ restaurant that I frequent, but I decided to try something different yesterday and was quite pleased. The restaurant has limited seating, but we arrived early and were seated promptly. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich combo with fried okra and my son got the same with a side of cheese grits. The pork was smoky and had a fantastic flavor and was served on a toasted bun. The fried okra was sooooo good and the sauce was a great compliment to it. DO NOT EAT HERE! To start, we ended up here based on a TripAdvisor review that this was a good family friendly place with great food. That's all untrue. Overall I would never recommend this place, kids or not. They did not have most of the menu items we tried to order. No ribs, man n cheese, baked beans, etc. soda machine needs carbonation, and staff is rude and could careless if you're happy or return. The rest of the food was awful, and we trashed it and went to get fast food. My daughters chicken tenders tasted like a chemical of some kind. Service: Horrible rude blonde hipster girl with glasses. We told her the sodas seemed flat and her response without looking at us was there is nothing I can do about that. For starters, you can refund the $6.00 I paid for three drinks if you don't have a properly working machine. There's an idea. Oh, and maybe pretend like you care... even a little. No on makes you work here, quit if it's that bad. I also watched her treat several others very rudely, when patrons ask a question. Food: Pulled pork was OK. Sausage was gross, it had an odd taste to me and my husband. Turnip greens taste odd, and had a reddish color juice I also found to be strange. They were also way over cooked and mushy (that's the best way I can describe it) fried green tomatoes were good. The epitome of hole-in-the-wall, Saw's is a very tiny BBQ place that is more kitchen than dining room. Not exactly roomy, you're going to be sharing space while you chow down. And I can imagine that a place this popular is going to have people waiting for your seat, too. There are also a couple of tables outside and you're deeply encouraged to take your BBQ next door to enjoy at the Avondale Brewery. Arriving pretty late on a Sunday night, the choices were limited. Hey, when it's sold out, it's sold out. So I chose the Carolina Barbecue Sandwich, which is a huge pile of pulled pork topped with cole slaw and onion strings on a bun. With a big pile of fries. The sandwich did not need anything except a bunch of napkins. The fries were good but got better when I poured some of the table barbecue sauce on them. Friendly folks. Parking was interesting. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Firstly, you have to be okay with hole in the wall and all that implies, which I am for sure because some of the best food comes out of those places, and that couldn't be more true than here. A Houston native, I was visiting and wanted some good fried chicken and turned to Yelp. It was Memorial Day and the top 3 places on Yelp were closed and I am SO GLAD. Now, the food. Get the Sweet Tea Chicken Sandwich combo with fries. It was about $12.00 and really good sized chicken breast fried to perfection with a juicy and flavorful interior on a griddle cooked bun with dill pickles slices and this magical white sauce I was apprehensive of until I tasted it. OMG. Just Oh My Gawd. I would have ordered another one if I didn't have to get to the airport and go through security. The fries - generous portion and I have never in my life had fries as good as from a local Houston place called Sparkle until these fries at Saw's Soul Kitchen. They had a crisp, perfectly seasoned exterior and the interiors were creamy perfection. Absolute perfection. The awards they have posted on the wall by the cash register are absolutely deserved. Every one of them and I would go back to Birmingham just to eat here. Seriously. Now to address some of the other comments, yes, seating is VERY limited. We were there during off peak so were able to get a table inside and made friends with the folks at the table next to us - its' that kind of cozy. He was a local and said this was one of the best places in B'ham. There's also seating outside but not much. Staff - He wasn't rude, he was intentional and cooking and serving and taking phone calls and ringing out orders, so it's brisk and efficient, not rude, and people need to know the difference. I would definitely give this place a chance! Its small but lretty delicious. I have never tried Alabama bbq but the bbq sauce they had was runny & tangy but delicious! I got the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato french fries, fried green tomatoes & devil eggs. They all had good flavor! It wasn't full of salt. I tried the pullpork by itself before adding the bbq sauce. It was plain but juicy & it came with pickles. It had a different taste however the bbq sauce really made it pop. The food came out pretty fast aannnndd the staff is super friendly. The line was out the door but moved fast. Some of my friends never had fried green tomatoes and I let them try and they loved it! The batter was soooo good and flavorful. The deviled eggs are flavorful but dont taste like the typical one but it was sooo good in its own little way. On a recent trip to Alabama I just knew I had to have barbecue! This place was recommended and we were told its the "Best Barbecue in the state". So I was pretty excited to go... When we arrived it was a large group (about 12) and I was shocked at how small the place was.. We stalked out a couple of picnic tables outside and claimed them.. We then went in as a group to order and since the place is so small we couldn't all fit in the door, the gentleman behind the counter wasn't as friendly as I thought he would be when yelling to us to "shut the door" apparently we were letting the air out.. Once we all ordered we went out to our tables as they brought the food out to us.. The sauce on the barbecue chicken wasn't what I was expecting (I guess I'm used to North Carolina BBQ) but it was good.. I was also shocked that a barbecue place didn't have ribs or Mac and Cheese on the menu! Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy their food except for the person in our group that paid for everyone! The pork belly salad was amazing. The fresh field pea salad with tomatoes and onions was the perfect compliment to the pork belly. Also try the smoked wings. They are seasoned just right and topped with some white sauce. The pork and greens was terrific. You get creamy cheese grits topped with a generous portion of collard greens and pulled pork. A layer of fried onion rings and some of Saw's BBQ sauce completes this delicious dish. Do not expect to spend a lot of money or walk away hungry either. One more thing, although seating is limited, you can go next door to the Avondale Brewery and sit outside on a picnic table, listen to live music and drink one of their craft beers. The Soul Kitchen has become a routine and self-imposed mandatory stop on any visit to Birmingham. I'm systematically working my way through the menu, starting at the top with the Pork and Greens, a culinary Rube Goldberg combo of BBQ pork, collard greens, cheese grits, topped with those skinny little homemade onion rings. I've tried the burger on the advice of one of the workers. Thumbs up. Also tried the blackened catfish sandwich. Also thumbs up, but I'll get it without tomato next time. (An authentic catfish sandwich really only needs onion, IMHO.) I've also sampled the sweet tea fried chicken. Dope. This time, I broke protocol and went back to the pork and greens. Wow. Better than remembered. The ingredients were proportional, where every forkload (except the very last one) included pork, grits, greens and onion rings. Why I did this to myself before hitting the road back to Atlanta, I have no clue. A nap is indicated after this meal. I always leave with a pound of pork, a pound of chicken and a sweet tea fried chicken and large white sauce for the folks at home who didn't get to join. Hint: come for a late lunch around 3 p.m. when the seating is plentiful...if you can call six tables plentiful. It's kind-of a hassle during the busy times...which is about always. read more

The other week, I had guests in town who wanted to eat Saw's while they were here. We had only been to the one in Homewood, so I suggested we try the location in Avondale to see the differences. We arrived a little after 1, hitting the back end of the lunch rush, giving us plenty of time to decide. The problem with this place is that they have way too many great options! I decided to go with the lunch special on that day, which was a sweet tea fried chicken sandwich topped with pimento cheese and the white BBQ sauce. I don't think I'll be able to look at other fried chicken sandwiches the same, and the pimento cheese was a nice touch! There was hardly any seating in the restaurant, so we grabbed our food and headed to the courtyard at the brewery next door to enjoy. Compared to the one in Homewood, this location seemed to offer more fried options but still had the same delicious quality. There is a reason this is one of the most popular places in Birmingham and I can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu! read more
