OMG!! Such a flashback to the rollerskating 60s and doo-wop pompadours I missed out on completely! Lol I love this little spot with its rockabilly, modern style to its diner, quality food. Granted, the only thing gluten-free what was a toast, I had myself a definite cheat meal when I ordered the special, banana, Foster French toast!! Luckily, I ate vegetables, the rest of the day, so I didn't die later, but it was a beautiful dessert for breakfast, and my boyfriend got a waffle, which I wish they would have said, came with powdered sugar, mainly because I do not like powdered sugar it gives a chalky flavor in my mouth. but the service was great, I loved how all the servers were dressed with their own rockabilly style and 60s ponytail! My coffee was always hot and I'm pretty sure French roast which is a bit harsh for my sensitive stomach but it worked fine since my boyfriend got hot water and I mixed the two. Yes I know blasphemy. Lol. I will definitely go back here again when I need another cheat day I just wish they had some gluten-free waffles or something without eggs in it so my stomach wouldn't dilator. Sax's is where you go when you want to abandon any semblance of healthy eating standards, and just want to eat dang good food. Every time a plate is put in front of you from Sax's, you can't help but say "Holy sh&t!" Take my french toast sandwich for instance. Huge pieces of french toast, with sausage, eggs and cheese on the inside. Maple syrup on the side. And if that wasn't enough their country potatoes is topped with sour cream. (Because, what if we don't get enough calories?!) I mean, when you come to Sax's, best forget calories exist. Another case in point, the Crab Cake and grits. Grits on the bottom topped with bacon gravy and crab cake pancakes and eggs. If that's not enough, they give you a giant biscuit on the side. I've also had the bacon waffles which were amazing. I've had bacon waffles elsewhere and it'd be small little bacon bits -- not here. Huge piece of bacon waffled into crispiness. SO f'ing good. I don't know why this place makes me curse... maybe because it's a "joint" and their food deserves curse words. My hubs had the country benedict, which is a benedict if you don't feel like hollandaise sauce has enough calories. It's basically biscuits and gravy with sausage and eggs on top. He also insists on getting their cinnamon rolls which are diiiiivvvvine. Comes out warm and gooey with loads of melty icing, which surprise, surprise, looks like more gravy on top. Because we all need more gravy on top. The best thing about Sax's? Their pricing is totally reasonable. Living in Marin, the land of mediocre overpriced food, Sax's is a breath of fresh air. And you really gotta take that breath when eating their food, because it will be inhaled. Last thing that's impressive -- they have really good green tea. Many diner places will give you the crappiest of green tea bags, not this place. Very high quality and they give you a little kettle pot so you don't have to keep asking for hot water. Rude owner and rude staff. Most unwelcoming place I have ever been to. FYI, no strollers allowed. I wish they had this posted somewhere. 1. As soon as we arrived the first thing we heard was profanity being used by who we thought was an upset staff member as she had the apron and uniform. Turns out it was the OWNER. She was on her cellphone right outside of the restaurant yelling at someone about a gift certificate. From what we heard it sounded like a guest at the restaurant was saying there should be a balance of $45 on the gift certificate and the owner was yelling at someone on the phone that it had a $25 balance and asking what amount the person on the other side of the call made it for. I was shocked the restaurant allowed that type of image for the restaurant, but I later learned it was the OWNER. 2. When you arrive you have to sign in on a piece of paper and they won't seat you until "your entire party is standing in front of the restaurant." This is inconvenient as parking is hard to find. But oh well, this isn't too terrible yet they should also post this information somewhere. 3. When the hostess saw my stroller she said they didn't allow strollers inside, so I requested a table outside. No biggy right? Well once our table was ready, the SAME hostess tells us strollers are not allowed outside either. Hmm, why have us wait for the table we requested outside because strollers aren't allowed "inside." At this point I explain the stroller is the size of a chair and that it would take the space of one chair. (Bugaboo bee5 stroller, super compact stroller) The hostess with the most rudest tone ever said she'd get the owner too see if she'd allow it. 4. Owner comes and it's the lady who was using profanity outside of the restaurant! I was shocked yet I continued to explain that my 10month old eats in the stroller as the stroller can be made into a seated position and that it's probably smaller than the restaurant's chairs. The owner in a loud very rude tone said no and said the stroller handle stuck out too much. So I made the stroller even more compact by collapsing the handle. I explained I use the stroller as a high chair because high chairs are germ infested and it's the flu season so I told her if she could provide a sanitized high chair or some disinfectant I could use to wiper it down. The words that came out of her mouth when I requested a sanitized high chair were "I can seat you in the parking lot." At this point I could no longer tolerate her rude loud unwelcoming demeanor and told my party let's just go. 5. When I tried to leave the owner grabbed me from both of my arms and was saying something about let's make this work but I firmly responded "don't touch me" and she said ok and let go of me and walked away. WOW! Just wow, my father doesn't speak much English so he didn't understand the dialogue and just saw the body language and what he saw was discrimination against a minority. I didn't take it like that but the more I play back the entire scenario and feeling of unwelcomeness, the more I wonder if my race could have determined the treatment we received. After this horrible experience we were still very hungry and yelped breakfast places in Petaluma. We ended up Cafe Bellini where we were treated with respect, kindness, and with amazing food. This was a fun, 50's restaurant with black and hot pink motif. They had cozy indoor seating and spacious outdoor seating. We chose the outdoor seating for our breakfast visit. We had the California Benedict with grits instead of potatoes, a BLT with onion rings, the Benedict 5.0(for the teenager that wasn't hungry, Ha!) and a half order of biscuits and gravy with a side of sausages. What can I say... the food was over the top amazing, the wait staff friendly and accommodating, and the environment super pleasant. It made our visit to Petaluma worth repeating! The Benedict's are so creative - one with a grilled cheese as its base and loaded with bacon, garlic, poached egg and Hollandaise. The Cali had bacon and avocado with perfectly cooked eggs. I have been to Sax's a few times now and each time has been a pretty good experience. They have a wide variety of items to choose from on the menu and their portion sizes are massive. All of the servers wear pink and they do a pink sugar rim on their mimosas.. lots of pink running around, that's for sure. It's a fun vibe and better yet, they're dog friendly! I wouldn't say their food is of the highest quality (although, they do get their bread locally and their biscuits are pretty darn tasty) and their portions really are massive, so, if you're going for something a little more on the healthier side, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. The food is good though and the service is pretty quick with how busy they typically are. Very disappointing experience. It took over 1.5 hours to receive our food, and during that time, the manager argued with us twice about the delay instead of offering any understanding or apology. The waitress may have messed up our order, but rather than acknowledging the issue, the manager showed a poor attitude and refused to help resolve the situation. To make matters worse, other tables who came after us were served and left before we even got our food. When we voiced our concerns, we were basically told to be quiet. Everything I tasted was great. -country fried steak -country fried chicken -French toast -corned beef hash - home made and very meaty -chili cheese fries -cinnamon roll - this was was least favorite and didn't like up to the hype. -biscuit was also just ok I much prefer the country fried chicken though others in my party likes the regular fried steak more. My friend ordered a hot chocolate which had a nice mountain of whipped cream, but the drink itself tasted funky, like river water or spoiled milk. She couldn't take more than one sip. I came all the way from Vallejo for this Ribeye. Let me set the scene for you! Beautiful restaurant with beautiful employees. Being in this neighborhood sometimes is hard to get good customer care . Every time I have come here the staff has been good to me. Respectful. Down right amazing . I love it ! It keeps me coming back. You order your food and it comes in great timing. I used to wash dishes and squeeze hash browns in this place back in 1983 for Bob and sue Marvin. When they shut the doors, I was sad. I had met the sax's sisters at Costco and they told me they had a restaurant in Petaluma, low and behold they took over Marvin's. Marvins of course was your traditional burger and pancakes hole in the wall, but the sisters went bold, they took traditional to a new level. It is an exciting menu and everytime I am conflicted on trying something new, but everytime I go for the chicken friend steak and gravy. There are a few places that get this plate right anymore, but sax's does. I wish I could give reviews on their other stuff, looks so good, but I'm Petaluma country boy and simple minded. Found this place on a FB foodie group where people were raving about their cinnamon buns, so decided to give it a try. Stopped by for a mid-week lunch and was seated immediately. Our server was prompt, sweet, and made sure to keep checking in with us to see if everything was going well. I wanted to try out the Cobb salad, which was pretty good, but nothing mind blowing. My friend got the MeeMaw's chicken sandwich which came out huge! But she enjoyed that as well. We also both got the Cinnamon bun to-go, and WOW was that truly amazing!! By far the star of the show. It came with heating instructions to pop into the microwave at home, and when it came out, it was so soft, fluffy, gooey, and the icing just melted in your mouth. Upon entering Sax's Joint I felt at peace to be at a family run, home cooking joint!! I'm from the South and the menu of chicken fried steak and shrimp and grits reminded me of home. The service is outstanding, we were greeted by multiple staff members and everyone was so friendly!! We got lucky as there wasn't too long of a wait. It's a small space so you may have to wait in line to get in. The hot chocolate tasted similar to a hot chocolate mix but the fresh whipped cream and sprinkles elevated it! The biscuit was the best part - it was massive and I loved the fresh jam and butter. I was surprised that the shrimp was fried as it normally isn't in classic shrimp & grits. The grits were kind of bland and I felt the gravy was a bit too rich for me and had more of an onion flavor than anything else. Kind of potent for the early morning. The eggs were fine but could've benefited from seasoning. Overall 5 stars for ambiance and service and biscuit and closer to 3 stars for the shrimp & grits. Absolutely love Sax's Joint! I have been coming here for a few years now. I am not from the area, so when I found this establishment, I was amazed. The location of this restaurant is super cute, as it is decorated as an 80's diner with a pop of pink. So it's super easy to spot this establishment. Street parking also makes it super easy to access. And every time I have come here, the hosts, server, & just everyone there, are super friendly and accommodating. Every time I eat here, I have to always have their famous French toast. They're always super fluffy, sweet & delicious. Ahh, and don't get me started with their cinnamon rolls. They are a must! The food was very good - I ordered the cinnamon roll pancake which was huge, very good but I could only eat a quarter of it because it was really sweet. Our golf outing today was in Petaluma. Oh goodie. A reason to go over to Sax's. I had it bookmarked after I read about their enormous cinnamon bun. We got to Petaluma in no time as we were going against commute traffic. I had hubby drive us over to Sax. They open at 7 am. There's parking in the back but we waited across the street and waited for Sax to open. I called them promptly at 7am to ask if cinnamon buns were ready. Yep. We crossed the street into the diner. It's like going back in time. No wonder American Graffiti was filmed mostly in Petaluma if Sax is any reflection. There were rows of cinnamon buns ready for purchase. How many did we want to buy? We went with one. She offered to heat it up for us. For under $7.00 it easily satisfied both our cinnamon bun craving. We ate it in the golf course parking lot before our tee time. Cute as a button, great retro 50's design & super friendly service. You can dine at the counter or several seating areas about including outside. I was having my car serviced around the block and it was early in the morning, so instead of just grabbing a cup of joe at a coffee joint, I decided to treat myself to a decadent breakfast. Sax's was at top of my mind because they consistently win best place for breakfast in Petaluma. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, bacon, potatoes and a giant biscuit, it was a heavy carb morning. My food came out fast. Perfectly cooked eggs, potatoes are not cooked to order so they are nothing special even with the dollop of sour cream & chopped onion. I would saute the precooked potatoes with the onions in the leftover bacon fat or butter. As for the 5-6 pieces of bacon, I couldn't finish all the pieces, but I know they are reheated, because when you cook bacon on the fly it would spell up the entire place, and who doesn't like the smell of frying bacon, abiet Vegetarians. The homemade biscuit is supersized, with the best part being around the edge because you can really taste the yeasty part of the dough. The coffee is really, really good, and was pleasantly surprised for diner coffee. Wrap up. Huge portions, fair prices, but they can oomph the flavor a bit more, and take it easy on the precook. As I left, the regulars started to come in and lots of takeout orders as well. I'm glad they are super busy and a hot spot for breakfast and lunch in Petaluma. I remember the cute retro diner vibe with checkered floor, sitting in a booth, 50's decor/music. I am not in the habit of writing reviews, and I have been to Sax's several times, but it was a bit off today. I ordered the Just a Cheeseburger and my wife ordered the Patty Melt. First off they brought me the wrong order, then they got that corrected and the burger was almost raw, and the fries were cold.
