This is the ultimate breakfast/brunch spot. After eating here the first morning, we already knew we were coming back the next day. I'm actually glad it's not closer to home, because I'd be here all the time. The portions are generous, the service is friendly, and the whole place has a great 1950s diner vibe with old photos, memorabilia, and music from that era. I had the eggs benedict both mornings, once with the house potatoes and once with the hash browns. Both potato sides were excellent. The house potatoes had crispy bits, creamy centers, and a dollop of sour cream, while the hash browns were crisp outside and soft inside. I swear I cannot make potatoes like that at home. The eggs benedict were also outstanding. Instead of a thin slice of ham or Canadian bacon, they used a real ham steak. I love eggs benedict, and these were some of the best I've had. My partner had the chicken fried chicken one morning and chicken and waffles the next, and loved both. He also shared a biscuit with me, which was very good. I was tempted by the biscuits and gravy on day two, but the eggs benedict were too good not to order again.

Crab Cakes & Grits w/ Biscuit ($22)

Joint in Time Locally-owned joint that's been slinging breakfast to Santa Rosans for almost fifteen years (circa 2013) in a throwback, retro '50s-style diner. They're known for generous portions and traditional American fare--sometimes with a twist. The Good: * Service was friendly enough, and they got our orders right. Also, please note, once you get your check you can just go straight up to the cashier to pay your tab. * Outdoor dining * Crab Cakes and Grits was certainly a very interesting dish. Hard to describe, yet tasted like you'd imagine, if that makes sense. *Pricing is fair, given the giant portions. * Who doesn't love diner coffee? The Meh: * Free street parking only. We didn't have any issues finding parking, but we were here on a Friday, and we'd heard it gets pretty packed on the weekends. * Loudmouth locals who like to grope the waitresses and speak loudly enough that we know he dropped two deuces that morning before arriving. * A lot of the food just felt underseasoned and bland. The biscuit, for example, looked fluffy and amazing, but it had an almost dry flavor: just flour and baking soda. The Ugly: * I know they've been open for a while now, and making breakfast involves a lot of grease and whatnot. But the place just felt grungy and in need of a good scrubbing. Kinda like me, but I digress... * They also need to get some better lighting in there, as it felt very dark, which didn't help with the aforementioned dingy part. Conclusion: Decent option if you're in town and looking for a place for some rib-sticking breakfast.

We were looking for a good Sunday brunch spot and Sax's kept coming up. Located near downtown Petaluma, it's located in a small pink painted diner with multiple rooms. We were seated quickly around 11:30am on Sunday in their back room, which included kitschy decor including a standing Elvis. We ordered a Bloody Mary (spicy and topped with celery and bacon) and a mimosa, $9 and 10. Also had a cup of coffee which was smooth and strong ($3.50/each). I had the California Benedict ($18) which had perfect eggs, avocado and bacon on top of a sourdough English muffin. One side had nicely crispy bacon while the other was a little fatty. It was enough to fill me without the side of potatoes. Husband had country fried steak ($20) which he gobbled down with country gravy, two eggs on the side with country potatoes and sour cream. We also saw other diners getting blueberry pancakes (huge!), chicken and waffles, and the burger, which all looked tasty. We also got two cinnamon buns to go and can't wait to eat them. Service was friendly though one of the other waitresses was yelling in the kitchen which was a little off putting. Overall, it's a popular spot which I would recommend.

What's fun restaurant! I love the 50s retro theme. The staff were all very friendly, service was fast. We ordered the florentine eggs Benedict and the Little P which included eggs, bacon, and sourdough French toast. My eggs Benedict was perfectly cooked! Delicious hollandaise sauce and eggs poached perfectly. My breakfast at potatoes were delicious- they were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The French toast was incredible. It had a really good crunch on the outside. We will definitely be back when we are in town to try more of the menu!

My family loves Sax's. The theming, staff and ambiance really makes this a special experience. The family that runs this restaurant is great. They love the community and it shows. The retro 1950's, pink biker theming is so fun. I've tried many things on the menu here. As I get older, I find that I can't really handle eating one of their delicious cinnamon rolls without feeling ill. This makes me very sad, but that's life. I find lots of other wonderful things I can eat! Today, I ordered their Surf n Turf breakfast and it was sooooo good! The ribeye with the garlic shrimp is so delicious and well seasoned! Plus, for $30 I think it's a pretty good deal for the quality and quantity you get. My wife had a scramble that she loved, I also want to mention that their kids breakfasts are the best deals of pretty much every breakfast place I've been to in Sonoma County. My daughter had their pancakes, eggs and sausage and it was only $7. If you haven't been to Sax's then please go check them out! They are awesome!

Fabulous French toast!

Sax's is a great go to for breakfast or lunch. They're a mainstay in Petaluma and have been there for decades. Super popular! I had the French toast and for $5, made it a meal with two crispy pieces of bacon and two perfectly poached eggs. It was wonderful!! couldn't even finish it and was fortunate enough to bring the remainder home with the Marionberry butter they make fresh on site. Reasonable prices, fast, friendly staff, and plenty of street parking. The only downside is that since strollers aren't allowed due to space arrangements, you might find yourself seated next to a family with one or more children and those little ones can sure be loud! If you don't mind, then no problem. If you do, see if you can sit outside at least the open air will carry the sounds of crying away quicker.

I'd give it six stars if I could! They should bulldoze every Mel's Diner in the Bay Area and replace it with this place! Hands down the best diner in the Bay Area no competition. Best cinnamon rolls I've ever had, best waffle, best biscuits and gravy, some of the best fried chicken I've had, really anything you get here expect to be blown away! Amazing service and a total throwback vibe when sitting in. I'd take pictures of the food but I usually can't help myself and scarf every last bite down! Truly magical stuff. After multiple visits this place only gets better and better. Price wise worth it, you'll be full all day.

Awful experience!

Since someone decided to send a very aggressive and abusive message to me, calling me all these names, I decided to post pictures of the bugs that were in our food per their request. Thanks Mason M. for your harassing message in response to my Yelp review. These photos are for you because you wanted so hard to talk trash about me and my experience. Like I told the manager, if you like to eat bugs go ahead! It's not something I'm into, but y'all go ahead. Eat at your own discretion! Mason M. and anyone else trolling I will report you to Yelp. An internet troll is someone who intentionally disrupts online communities by posting inflammatory, offensive, or provocative content to upset others. Trolling often involves making false claims, spreading misinformation, or engaging in personal attacks to incite conflict and negativity. While some trolls may exhibit traits associated with darker personality types, research suggests that anyone can engage in trolling behavior depending on the situation and their emotional state

French Toast and something healthier!

I finally had a delicious brunch at Sax's Joint after wanting to try them for years! I'm so glad the stars aligned and I got the chance to stop by. The overall vibe is very cutesy and unique- it's themed like a classic American 1950s diner, and pretty much everything is pink. The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and their patio is dog-friendly. Some places I've visited that claim to have dog-friendly patios make us feel like we're an inconvenience they're forced to accommodate to get business, but that was absolutely not the case here. The staff was so sweet to my dog, which I really appreciated. They don't have wifi, and there's a sign indoors that says, "There is no wifi here. Pretend it's the 1950s and talk to the person next to you." We spent our entire brunch experience here talking to multiple other friendly patrons who gave us some recommendations for experiences in Petaluma. I can't remember the last time I ate a meal and spent the whole time talking to other folks with no one looking down at their phones. Refreshing! I had the French Toast, which didn't disappoint - it was huge, and I had to take more than half of it to go, which made for a delicious second round at home. I look forward to returning and exploring more of their menu in the future.

Themed classic diner vibes with incredible homely brunch food! Country fried steak is comfort to the hunger when one is craving for something gravy and homely for brunch! Freshly squeezed OJ complimented well with the entrees. French toast was sweet-alicious! I just need one. The other toasts are too many. Tri tip Benedict was something different and definitely ordered for the yearners of steak and eggs. Service was wonderful and adore the uniforms to the restaurant diner theme as well as the retro tables and restrooms! Lovely brunch spot surely!

Quaint frontage!

What an amazing breakfast place! Quaint seating inside and very friendly and hospitable staff who serve with a smile. Food was well cooked and presented with elegance! Come for the novelty first then return for a good scrumptious breakfast! I know we will!.

Such a fun 50s-style diner! The portions are huge, the service is great, and the whole place has so much character. It's probably the most unique spot in Petaluma. The atmosphere is nostalgic and lively, and the comfort food hits the spot. I'd absolutely recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Can you make a reservation for Mother's Day?

I'm not sure. I would call them it's worth the wait (within reason)

What parking is available for disabled couple?

It is all street parking...they don't have a parking lot.

Can you convert the patio to a drive thru?

I wish we could but there's a city ordinance in Petaluma that will not let any more drive-through's in the city so we would have to wait till one of them gets taken down lol

Is Sax's open on Christmas Day?

no we will be closed christmas day. bu we are open the day before and the day after

If we are seeing a movie at 12:10 at cinemas in Petaluma - is 10:30 at Sax an early enough start?

Probably not. Sax is not a fast food joint, but to enjoy the experience you should not try to put a finite time limit. I have experienced a somewhat long wait for food to arrive, and I don't mean that in a negative way. That being said, the… Read more

The seasonal menu's offerings were ideal for a rainy April day, when their cassoulet, bocadillo and other cozy options provided the comfort food we were craving. I loved the colorful tables and tasteful decor. It was clearly a regular lunch destination for many of the diners. The bar was packed during the rush, around noon, as well as the other indoor seats. My lunch friend mentioned that the restaurant is owned and operated by a husband and wife team: Annette and Brian. The regulars were greeted with familiarity. It wasn't the kind of place where you're rushed for your order, nor is it a dine and dash location. The menu - both food and drink - has tantalizing options, so it's best to come back repeatedly. My Turkish Coffee arrived quickly after I ordered it, despite Annette being the only server on the floor. I enjoyed the Bocadillo too, especially the pickled vegetables that accompany the sandwich. For those complaining that the portions were small or that the prices were high, the quality of ingredients and depth of flavor are worth the cost and my portion was more than enough to satisfy my appetite, plus I left with the other half of my sandwich as an offering for my hungry twenty-something at home. We ordered a rice pudding for dessert and dug in before I was able to snap a picture! It was delicious though, with the poached blueberries and almonds offering an ideal balance of texture and flavor to earn this simple dessert my esteem. Next time I want to try the beet & sour cream cake though!

A quick look at the menu had us both salivating, as each dish looked better than the next! And since the menu changes daily, I can only imagine what they'll have in store next time we visit (and there will be a next time). The brisket, served with soft scrambled eggs, roast winter squash and tahini, melted in the mouth. Every bite was just bursting with spice and flavor and it was great. Same for the beef stew, which was really a slab of beef on top of a very tasty buckwheat polenta and roasted veggies. I damn near licked the bowl clean. Dad opted for the Jerusalem bagel, with lox and pickled lime cream cheese along with sunny-side up eggs. Another winner. The coffee was served in a french press, stayed piping hot throughout our meal - another plus. Pearl is in an industrial part of town, just west of the River on G street between downtown and the bowling alley. It's worth finding it but get there early - open till 3 only and closed Tues-Wed.
