VERY NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE I walked in told John the vehicle I was interested in. The first item he wanted was my registration to my car I was trading in. Then he gives me the keys to the car I planned on buying and said you can look at it but you cant drive it! They stated the trade was low because of the interior. The interior had a missing leather piece from the gear box. My seats were fine and they stated all of my interior was in poor condition. John didn't even let me drive the car I was interested in. He was more concerned with gathering my personal information. I should have stopped him and walked out but I didn't. John only concentrated on the negative and not being positive about the car buying process. The employees at the showroom not very friendly, no one said Good Morning. Lastly, while leaving trying to make a cup of coffee - Keurig - and it wasn't working. There was another customer helping me, still wasn't working. The receptionist just staring out the window. We likes this place so much so that we bought another car from them almost exactly one month after we bought our truck. We were in a market for another Mini Cooper Countryman ALL4 to replace and old one. Been to a few other dealers only to find out they are scammers. I've gone here to get emissions testing done on several of our vehicles. This place is clean, nice waiting area and the lady that works the front counter is The Absolute Best! She is Super Friendly, Easy to talk to and just all around great! She is even kind enough to open the door for you if she sees you walking up. The guys that do the actual testing have always been extremely pleasant as well. They do the testing right away, then drive your car right up to you, (if you're standing outside). While I didn't end up "closing the deal" with Seth, I cannot help but want to share my 5-star experience with Saybrook Auto Barn! I first started speaking with Seth in September 2021, and he was willing to hold the car that I wanted to buy for more than a reasonable amount of time, with only a $200 deposit! Unfortunately, I had to leave for the West Coast unexpectedly shortly after my great find. I informed Seth of my circumstances and he was beyond understanding, he called and left me a voicemail shortly thereafter to obtain my card # to refund my deposit, and, well, life happened and I forgot all about the deposit until yesterday, January 11, 2022 (4 MONTHS LATER!). Not only was Seth quick to get back to me, but was just as pleasant to speak with and work with even knowing that I still wasn't a "closed deal". It is rare to find [honest] "used car salespeople", but rest assured that Saybrook Auto Barn is not a great resource to find amazing deals on used cars, be they are extremely helpful and courteous on all fronts, and services they provide for their customers. The guy is sweating through his suit, going back and forth to some mystery back room, "talking to his manager", while really just scrolling though his Facebook feed. From the moment I drove into the lot, I knew this was going to be a little different: it even looks like an auto barn, with a pair of white rocking chairs on the porch, and a collection of vintage cars inside. If you're going to spend a few hours investing in buying a car, it may as well charm you simultaneously. John helped us with our sale, and he got us out the door with all the paperwork in under an hour. He helped us arrange a bulk of the work prior to our arrival, and was knowledgeable, straightforward, professional, and accommodating. I've tagged along to friends and family buying cars in the past, and the whole process seemed irritating, drawn out, and pretty close to the nightmare that is hanging out at the RMV. Went to them for a VIN check on a trailer, they made a typo mistake on the verification, DMV refused to register it because of the typo. Cost me a month of time to reschedule at DMV in addition to wasting half a day there. Would not recommend this place. read more

I am giving two stars because the employees I encountered were not wearing masks which made me uncomfortable given the current circumstances surrounding covid. I was expecting that masks would be worn by all employees. I was handed paperwork from a friendly employee who had no mask on. Close proximity and no mask. Although I did not purchase a vehicle from this business, I stopped by today on a whim while doing other errands in the Saybrook area. The staff were all quite pleasant and helpful without being pushy or aggressive, the way one might expect from a dealer specializing in used vehicles. Despite frigid temperatures, the staff took a moment to get to know me, introduce themselves, and take note of what I might be looking for. This business has a vast selection at very fair prices, and whomever is selecting the vehicles has a great eye. There seemed to be truly something for everyone, but most importantly, all of the vehicles they had appeared to be in excellent condition, well maintained and cared for.
