The real deal - one of the few remaining Japanese places in Westchester that's run by Japanese people. They have a giant list of starters - the agedashi tofu, potato salad, and others are really good. The seaweed salad actually had multiple kinds of seaweed in it, which is something I haven't seen much before. Everything here tastes really homemade in a way that you don't see much anymore. The mustard (karashi) isn't just out of the tube, and I have a suspicion the wasabi is either actual wasabi, or at least a very good facsimile. The sushi was really good, too. No ridiculous rolls with whatever on top, just pieces of fish on rice, and a tuna roll. Also kinda unique was that we got a fried prawn of some kind and ate the whole thing, legs and shell and all. Broken hearted to have to update my 5 stars to 3 star for what was once my favorite restaurant where I went all the time and I was a regular because they have doubled and tripled their prices and it's absolutely disgusting that it's completely unaffordable. My 5 star review of my beloved bara chirashi from 5 years ago explained it was $36. Then it went up to $45. Then it went up to $50. And the amount of fish was less and less. I still decided I could have a treat, no longer regularly but maybe a couple times a year. I just checked the menu and now it's $65!!!!!!!!!! Sazan WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?! You went from $36 to $65 for the same dish that hasn't improved but gotten smaller in only 5 years! You have lost your loyal customer and if you look and see tables are empty you know why. I am so disappointed that it took me so long to come to this hidden gem. The family and I came to have dinner. We had a 1815 reservation. As we know that there was traffic issue, we called ahead to let the restaurant know that we would be running late even though we were only late by 7 minutes because this is the proper thing to do. The man on the telephone was very understanding. When we came, there was only one other table with patrons. By the time we left, there were four other tables full. The place is clean and cozy. The decor is very simple, clean cut but elegant. Shoji dividers were used to separate the sushi/chef bar/counter and the cozy dining room. We ordered the broiled yellowtail neck and squid with garlic as our appetizers. They were very good especially the broiled yellowtail neck. For our entrees, we had the chirashi Sazan, white fish w/sake sauce and the steak. We had the added "dinner set" with our meal. The "dinner setting" came with miso soup, salad, seaweed, a bowl of rice and ice cream. All three of us enjoy our meal. I had the warm house sake which was full of flavor. At first, it was semi-sweet and then the pleasant aroma just lingered on the tongue. It went perfectly with my white fish. The chirashi was very flavorful. The steak was seasoned well and very tender. As previously stated by other diners, most of the dishes on the menu are not offered by most real Japanese restaurants in NY. These are authentic dishes that Japanese would have at home. I have read how other people blamed restaurants for their own shortcomings. I am just glad that they never came back to this restaurant. I have seen a lot of bad patrons(not at this restaurant by experience) who blamed the restaurants or theirs owners when they were not that nice/appropriate to begin with...be it their children running and/or making noise in restaurants, ordering things that they do not like from the start then complaining about it, expecting Asian fusion dishes, expecting cheesy decor that are not up to par with Chinese owned restaurants serving Japanese food, blame bad service based on who they are and not how they act, etc, etc. This restaurant is open by Japanese who do not need to prove to people who do not know or appreciate real Japanese cooking. This is how restaurants in Japan look like. Yes, ramen noodles bars/restaurants would not look like this restaurant as the decor would be different. I can see how the demeanor of some Japanese could be perceived as rude when viewed by other non Japanese. This is still up for personal perception. It does not bother me as people do not get mistreated when one behaves appropriately. We had a great meal due to the great food, ambiance and the way the waiter and the chef/owner treated us and would definitely be back. When we left, the chef acknowledged and thank us. Ok, so I was looking for a nearby diner to eat with friends. We planned to meet at the Ardsley Diner and as we were walking in, Sazan caught our eyes. We all looked at each other and turned right around and walked into Sazan. The first thing I noticed was that the sushi bar was staffed traditionally and the tables felt like a traditional Japanese restaurant. We knew we went to the right place. They had a separate sake menu. Another bonus. I had the sushi and sashimi combo which included scallop sushi. Very nice touch. The fish was perfect in quality, texture and taste. They even added wasabi to the sushi, the way it should be. The ikura felt very tight and a bit fishy, that was my only gripe. I had a great glass of junmai ginjo and it was a generous serving. Took a look at the menu and realize they cover a lot of ground of Japanese cuisine, five of us had dinner tonight and each of us enjoyed our meal. Japanese food is much more than sushi and hibachi. Instead of a meal, I enjoyed the large, appetizer style menu (69 items,) Which allows me to order many different things. I started with beef negimaki and the beef was very tender nicely cooked and well flavored. Followed that with cold soba noodles which was very light and delicious. My final course was the pork belly with a spicy mustard and it was unctuous as pork belly tends to be. My dining mates enjoyed beef negimaki as a main, chicken teriyaki, chicken Katsu, and the 4th had pork cutlet and ginger, and to a diner, they ate everything, really enjoyed it And each said they will be back. The service was great very Asian, and that you simply raise your hand and they brought you whatever you wanted. Not that I know what authentic Japanese Cuisine is- but Sazan is the total opposite from the two spots I visit for Sashimi, Nigiri and Sushi. What you get here from what I overheard, is genuine. Located in a plaza off Saw Mill River Rd., in Ardsley, the draw here is the combination of the most flawless Sashimi I've tasted in Westchester, together with a very nice experience. Sazan is kind of small with more than a handful of 4-6 seater tables. Since I was lunching sola, the host showed me to their L-shape sushi bar that sits at most 10-12 (I think). I'd actually noticed a lot of Vegan dishes in their online menu that I didn't see while I was here- but didn't question it. So decided on the next simple thing and started with a Seaweed Salad followed by a Sashimi Combination. I'll be honest though, sitting at the Sushi Bar was peaceful. That's if...I wasn't looking at the chef cutting away at a whole fish on his side of the counter in a corner. I'll admit- at the speed I'm going, I might as well be Vegan- because as much as I love fish, I had to cock my face several times to avoid looking at the chef cutting into the whole thing and that's one sight I didn't wanna see (there weren't any splatters though). The owner who often waits on tables has always treated me and my husband with rude and disrespectful behavior. We always thought, 'what did we do to be treated this way...?' yet we kept going back because it's one of very few authentic Japanese restaurants in the area. Well, today, he yelled at my husband for standing in the hallway (whaaat?!) when he was just waiting for someone to pass. I later went up to the guy to complain about what he did and he eventually 'RELUCTANTLY' apologized. I told my friends what happened and to my surprise, they told me that quite a few people stopped going there because of this man's arrogant attitude. Glad to know it's not just us. Second time dining here. The first time, food was okay...nothing to write home about but what stood out the most was the staff's utter disdain for children. As soon as we walked in, we got dirty looks and then the waiter asked us to make sure the kids behave themselves (they hadn't even made a peep yet) - this is before we even sat down. Uh...okay. Weird but okay. The waiter and lady behind the counter stared at my kids the entire time anticipating a meltdown of some sort. They even had a sign on each wall that read "please supervise your children at all times." Fast forward ...our second time there (July 2021), I had to jump on a Zoom call. I didn't speak, just listened with AirPods and the waiter came over ... I looked up at him, he points, I look to see a sign on the wall "no cellular phones." Really? This is probably one of my favorite sushi places within miles, by far. I'd always recommend getting one of the Bento Boxes, the Sushi Lunch Special, or the Chirashi. I've also heard from my mom that the various types of Udon are excellent as well, but I've yet to try that for myself. The food is always fresh and it ALWAYS satisfies my cravings for sushi. The teas are also really good too. I will always appreciate a good cup of green tea to sip while I eat my sushi. I find it sad to read the negative reviews on this place. As an American who's enjoyed real Japanese food in Japan, I'm delighted Sazan even exists. It's owned and run by a married couple who are not young, but work really hard to bring this authentic Japanese taste to the table. The menu has a lot of variety, including exotic options you can't find elsewhere, and it arrives quickly and elegantly presented, and tastes delicious. The prices are definitely high -- just like the few real Japanese places in Manhattan -- but just don't come if it's too expensive for you. The place is like a nice, normal restaurant in Japan. I just hope the owners don't retire too soon! For those of us who are used to all those fake "Japanese" joints offering "all you can eat" sushi along with your chicken wings and liquor for a cut-rate price because undocumented Chinese workers are running the place and barely making a living, yup, Sazan is not your place. You'd better keep going to those Chinese-run joints and keep bragging about how much you "love Japanese food." Tuesday October 21 2014 was a day that shall live in infamy at Sazan. The restaurant owner chose to come out of the kitchen and berate my Japanese wife for my (previous) Yelp review of the place. I didn't understand the rant in Japanese until my wife explained it to me, when I suggested we leave immediately. My father-in-law, a longtime customer of Sazan, who was there with us (taking the family to dinner) was outraged at the owner's treatment of his family. He agreed that we should leave. On the way out, he protested this treatment to the owner, resulting in a verbal confrontation that spilled out into the parking lot, with the owner threatening violence against my father-in-law. Wrong! This was the worst possible response to a Yelp review! This felonious behavior cost him long-time customers that spent easily $1000/year in the restaurant. With patience and wisdom, he could have collected a $250 guest check for the night, asked for an introduction to me, and discussed the review in a civilized manner, and kept his long-time customers. He did not address me, but instead tried to embarrass and humiliate my wife and father-in-law into getting me to remove the review. His behavior was bullying. My Father-in-law cherishes the First Amendment rights we enjoy, recognizing that opinion expressed in reviews is protected speech under the Constitution. He also understands the maxim "the customer is always right." This owner has shown a pattern of abysmal customer relations (as shown in other Yelp reviews). Recommendation: Avoid. read more

Small, quiet restaurant. Went on a Thursday and there was only one other table than mine. Got the zarusoba with tempura and the chawan mushi. Soba was the best I've ever had. Dipping sauce was delicious. The tempura was equally incredible. Chawan mushi was delicate and flavorful. I wish I had a side of rice to eat with it though. I will go back. A lot of reviews comment on the price. It is an expensive place but you aren't getting low to medium quality fish and food. After eating they're horrible food, I told the guy he would need to pay me $75 to even eat there again. I was completely embarrassed bringing a date there. They are just rude. In my humble opinion Sazan is the best, authentic and, dare I say, "pure" Japanese restaurant in Westchester County. I did recently have some sushi and sashimi of equivalent quality... in Tokyo, for a veritable fortune of money. Their offerings were about as good as what one finds at Sazan, and I can avoid a 14-hour plane ride to get it!! Of equivalent quality are their "stew" type dishes. I adore their nabeyaki-udon which comes in a thin iron bowl with extra utensils to help us get the goodies out of the soup. It has great flavor. We moved to Westchester last year due to work and were sad about leaving all the yummy places behind- UNTIL WE DISCOVERED SAZAN! So my husband and I love clams. One common thing among all the sushi places is that usually there is one or two kinds of clams- but Sazan regularly offers at least 3 or 4, which is so unusual! Everything is fresh and as if you are eating the ocean! Seriously! One another thing I love about this place is Mr. Sato remembers every customer and communicates you through each creation. Bravo! We recently moved from the city, and were beyond "pleasantly surprised" at this awesome little authentic Japanese place. No. It's not at the same level of higher-end Manhattan sushi/Japanese places, but it's not trying to be. In fact, it would definitely hold it's own in any neighborhood in NYC. The fish is great quality, and they often have some unique, and special varieties. The cooked food is really great. There are many authentic, and unique dishes to choose from. Always well-made, and super yummy. I am really glad that there is an option of this quality near by. A real find. The staff is nice, and the prices are quite reasonable, too. My only nit is that the atmosphere suffers from "CFL" syndrome: all the light fixtures are outfitted with those crappy, flickery bulbs. So it's kind of dim, and not as pleasant as it could/should be.
