One fall afternoon, I accidentally made a detour and moments later found myself stumbling across Tarrytown looking for a decent spot to eat. Thanks to the Yelpers I found this spot which did not disappoint! *AMBIANCE* It's a no frills, minimalistic restaurant but don't be deceived because the food speaks for itself. You can either find street parking or there's a metered lot across the street. We had a late lunch so there were open tables inside, and a few outdoor tables to enjoy your noms. *FOOD* I ordered the roll lunch set ($18), not only because variety is the spice of life, but I love having sushi, soup and some sides. The sushi was very fresh and I loved the gyoza, spinach, egg sides. We also ordered the tempura duo ($14) appetizer which was perfectly crisp. The shrimp and the veggie tempura were probably some of the best tempura I've had. I feel bad for the one poor server that covered the entire full space but he somehow pulled it off, and the food he served us was excellent. Particularly, the poke bowl (fresh, well balanced and flavorful), sushi, seaweed salad and sweet potato fries (among the best I've ever had). Revolting, greasy food -- not Japanese, Chinese, or Korean -- but rather some sort of disgusting Americanized "fusion." Could not stomach most of it. Vegetable gyoza -- if dyed green pasta filled with dreck and coated with cheap oil can be called that -- came from a low-end supermarket's frozen section. Vegetable fried rice had three small pieces of sad asparagus in greasy, overcooked brownish rice. A dish with kimchi and noodles tasted as though Chef Boyardee had been subjected to Manchurian-Candidate-level torture. Mercifully, our server totally forgot about one of our dishes (she did apologize and removed it from our bill when this was brought to her attention). We had an excellent experience here. First things first, this is a BYOB establishment. We brought our own beers from home and a bottle of wine from the store across the street. We ordered the sushi sampler and fried dumplings for starters; Both were very good. For mains, we ordered a variety of rolls: jumbo spicy tuna, Kyoto roll (shrimp tempura), kamikaze roll (eel & crab meat). The best one was the kamikaze roll because the entire roll is deep fried and comes out warm... it was an interesting experience eating warm sushi. We also ordered the toro sushi, which is a personal favorite of mine and I was not disappointed. The pieces were fatty and buttery. Service was great, we were checked on by at least two different wait staff. We opted to the Matcha Affogotto for dessert; this wasn't as great as the other reviews stated, at least in our opinion. The ice cream was so hard that we were sawing at it with our spoons rather than scooping up a nice spoonful. My friend and I shared the chicken karaage for an appetizer, and we both got miso soups and iced matchas. She got the chirashi bowl for her entree while I opted for the salmon poke bowl. The karaage was juicy, tender, and savory without being greasy, and probably my favorite dish of the meal. The mentaiko mayo was a perfect accompaniment to the karaage. The miso soup was rather standard, but warm and satisfying nonetheless. While the salmon poke bowl was fresh, it was not as complex or layered as I would hope from poke. It was also heavier on the rice with scanter quantities of salmon. The matchas were disappointing given that they tasted too dilute without the expected earthy complexity. No-frills sushi spot in Tarrytown. Menu has everything you're craving. We ordered the umami bomb, the sashimi, poke bowl, and an eel roll. Everything was pretty fresh (except for the ends of some of the salad leaves, which were slimy and brown). My sashimi was pretty good, thick chunks of salmon, fatty tuna, and a white fish that I couldn't place but really liked the grilled smoky flavor. I will say several of the pieces weren't cut into clean separate pieces but that's a minor complaint. Service was super friendly, with one guy handling most of the orders, cleaning/bussing, running back and forth from the kitchen. We didn't have to wait that long for the food to come out. PARKING: If you're coming here on the weekend, just know that it will be next to impossible to find street parking unless you commit to doing several loops around the block. My Tokyo was brought to my attention by one of my brothers. It caught his eye the last time he was in Tarrytown, and asked if I wanted to meet him there for dinner. As someone who is always looking to try somewhere new, I thought it was a great opportunity to discover a new spot in Tarrytown (didn't hurt that I was in the mood for Japanese) - so off we went. My Tokyo sits on Main St among several other restaurants and businesses. The restaurant itself is not large - kinda typical of other sushi-centric spots I've been to. The space is rectangular with tables along the perimeter and a semi-open kitchen in the back. Decor is kinda sparse, but there are a few accents throughout the space to make the restaurant inviting. It was not crowded when we arrived, however it did fill up shortly afterwards. The menu has a good selection of starters, rice bowls, sashimi, and sushi rolls. We decided to start with a few apps: the sushi sampler, curry croquettes, and pork gyoza. The sushi sampler contained 4 pieces of assorted pieces - they were pretty good and came with plenty of wasabi and ginger. The croquettes were also pretty good, the aioli it came with helped complement the flavor. The gyoza were great and by far my favorite of the three apps - they were crispy on the outside and full of flavor; they're some of the best gyoza I've had in a while. I was initially feeling sushi for my main, but their rice bowls looked intriguing so I went with the Katsu Don - this was a pork cutlet over rice mixed with scallion, onion, egg, and shiitake mushroom. The bowl was fine, though I kinda found it to be lacking flavor. Service was great, the team was on top of all the tables making sure that we were taken care of. There was a slight hiccup in the kitchen but they kept us in the loop the entire time and made sure that the issue was resolved. Overall, My Tokyo is a solid spot, but I'm not sure I would necessarily go out of my way to return. Don't get me wrong, they deliver the goods, but I don't feel this is a destination eatery. That being said, if I was in the area again and the opportunity to return here was presented, I wouldn't pass it up. read more

Most of the tables sit 1-2 people, so you might wait a bit before being seated if you have a bigger party. This place is small, cozy, and chill with light music overhead. Overall, it was a relaxing experience. 《The Goods》 I ordered the Loose Green Tea Pot, Mini Tuna Ikura Bowl, and the Small Sashimi Dinner. Loose Green Tea Pot - Very comforting. Saw the high ratings on this place, so I tried it out when I was over that way. It's a small, clean place, simply adorned, and is BYOB. No problem getting a place to sit, although almost full. Other good sign was the row of takeout orders- place was busy! We tried salmon, himachi, toro and a few rolls, including a custom roll (which wasn't an issue). Prices seemed a tad high, until the sushi arrived. Sushi was fresh, with large pieces. All the sushi and the rolls were incredible, and the look mirrored the taste. Unagi was really warm too! Amazing sushi spot with fresh fish and tasty dishes. We were actually in town because a Fleetwood Mac Tribute band we're going to play but my friend and I chose to meet a couple of hours before the show so we can grab a bite. Tarrytown is a nice small town, with so many good spots to eat and the people are always nice. The sushi spot is small but very clean and well kept, I love it. Our server was super nice and took the time to explain the menu to us. We ordered some rice , some eel, along with other house special rolls that left me not only full, but super happy. We recently went back twice this week and I thought I would update my review. Friday night they were busy but pretty efficient. Apps including karaage, curry croquettes, tempura and sweet potato fries were all excellent. I'd say chicken and tempura are standouts. I think their nigiri is particularly outstanding--toro, yellowtail, white tuna, egg, ikura. All really amazing, but loved the toro. They cut generous strips of fish. Rolls were really good too. Finally the matcha affogato was quite amazing and we shared among 4 of us. 2 of us came back a few days later and ate outside on a beautiful summer day. We love this place. read more

I'm a big sushi fan, and have been biding my time to try My Tokyo. Issue is my wife doesn't eat seafood, and beyond a small # of options there isn't much for her to eat here. Wore her down over time so I could try it for delivery at least and she didn't have to 'smell' the fish as much. Wish the chef-chosen options included a choice of spicy rolls but otherwise the menu was interesting (in a good way). I got the spicy tuna roll, Kyoto roll (basically a shrimp tempura roll with jalapeno added) and a Tokyo roll (yellowtail, scallion and crabmeat). While it was expensive, it was also the best sushi I've had in awhile. My favorite was the Tokyo roll, as the interplay of the crab with the yellowtail was interesting and tasty. Kyoto roll was a slightly better shrimp tempura roll thanks to the jalapeno, and the spicy tuna roll was a really good rendition of a classic. Wish the sizing was a tad larger but the quality was there. Wife got chicken teriyaki which she seemed to enjoy. They also threw in a miso soup that smells solid (wife is saving it). Would definitely order here again at some point. Not enough options for my landlover wife and maybe not the best value for the money versus other places in town, however My Tokyo is worth the occasional splurge. read more

Enjoyed an excellent meal here recently. My friend and I each had their small garden salad with ginger dressing and a variety of sushi rolls. Both were very good. They have a large assortment of sushi rolls including some that you don't find everywhere. For instance, I enjoyed my sushi with little orange slices on it! Totally expected more from a place with such good reviews. It wasn't awful, it wasn't great, but I had higher hopes from reading what other people said. First off, the server was very relaxed and we were never checked on to see if we wanted anything or asked if we were doing ok. Our rolls came out at the same time as our entrees, and the tables are quite small so it was a little crowded. A big part of what took away from the experience was that there was only one Asian person on the premises. Looked like the owner or manager. All kitchen staff was Spanish and I saw one of the female kitchen staff eating something while she was walking between the prep station and the refrigerator. The food was ok, but if you've ever been to a proper Japanese restaurant, this was far from that experience. The ambiance was also a bit off, music was barely audible, the sounds that were most prevalent were the kitchen and other customers. Very cute spot that is BYOB on the Tarrytown Main Street. I went for the first time this Sushi Sunday and enjoyed: Pork and veg gyoza (we did half and half); House Special Roll; and then Tokyo roll, spider roll and jumbo spicy tuna roll. We also partook in some edamame and the Iced Matcha. The food came out quickly, for the right price, and in the right sequence. My favourite was probably the House Roll because it was refreshing on a hot day. My fellow diner enjoyed the Toyko Roll the most. A little tip, depending on the time of day, you can get beer (including some craft items and hard kombucha) at the 7eleven up the street and/or wine from the store across the street. read more

There are izakaya-type dishes like Sweet Potato Fries with Mango Chili sauce (choose between wasabi mayo, chipotle mayo) and curry croquette. All were excellent. Did I tell you that My Tokyo has great desserts too? Order Matcha Affogato. The mix of bitter-sweet matcha over rich ice cream is a piece of heaven right there. I know many people who rave about My Tokyo so I had to try it out. My friend and I went and ordered a salmon poke bowl and shrimp tempura roll. I asked for the salmon bowl to be spicy salmon and they were able to make it happen. The poke bowl wasn't really our favorite as there weren't a lot of different textures and flavors but having it be a spicy salmon bowl did help with that. The shrimp tempura roll was pretty good. The service inside the restaurant was pretty good considering they are a small restaurant and they were filling more to go orders so it took a bit of time to get our food. I did really appreciate how accommodating and attentive the servers were. Overall this is a great spot to stop by for sushi when in Tarrytown. read more

TL;DR: Decent spot. I've had better. Not a strong recommendation as there are better food options on the strip. My Tokyo is a cute and small place with some exposed brick. Caters more for smaller groups (2-4) people. The service was alright. We (group of 3) were told that seating could be from 10-15 minutes and ended up being closer to what felt like 20-30. Not their fault, as they were busy, but that was the reality. At least we didn't wait long for the food, which made up for it. The food overall was a little underwhelming. The karaage, teriyaki and even the matcha latte all tasted a little bland. For the karaage, it was savory and the texture was decent, but it wasn't too crunchy and lacked a bit of flavor. The salmon teriyaki was better, but still the teriyaki tasted like it wasn't as savory or as flavorful as I liked or expected. It was also $18 for one small filet of salmon, so not sure that I would recommend it. The matcha latte also was a little bland. I had one pork gyoza, which was pretty good, but unfortunately the gyozas are small. I didn't get to try their sushi, but their sashimi is decent. Overall, I would say that My Tokyo is a decent spot. So my dinner partner and I were looking for a sushi restaurant in the middle of the Rivertowns in Westchester. My Tokyo popped up on Yelp and we both headed to Tarrytown. The decor was clean, well lit and sparse and we sat at one of the two outdoor tables because it was a nice evening. The server was pleasant and helpful. Food came promptly. We started with the "dirty avocado"... simply sublime. Three plump pieces of avocado that were perfectly seasoned. Both of us agreed two orders each would have made a wonderful meal! Then we ordered two rolls each alone was the equivalent of 2.5 rolls at most other sushi restaurants. We had the Mucho Tuna and the Salmon roll with grilled salmon skin. The fish was fresh and perfect. We then each had an ika and ikura piece. To be said simply we loved My Tokyo and will be back. read more

Great in person but have unfortunately had 2 pretty terrible takeout experiences. A few months ago I ordered on uber eats, and ordered a few no frills rolls, my standard order (plain tuna, salmon avocado, and yellowtail jalapeño). The fish did not taste fresh, and was quite fishy; however, I figured it was a result of the uber eats and ate the pieces I could. Today I ordered takeout pickup and unfortunately I had the same experience again, except this time worse. So hungry after picking up the food- I ate a piece of each of the rolls mentioned above in the car. Upon eating the salmon avocado roll, the fishy taste was unbearable- to the point of the fish definitely being old. I was unable to eat the roll. I walked back into the restaurant and the staff at hand were very kind and understanding, and refunded me the roll. I took the other two and left however the salmon roll put such a bad taste in my mouth I was unable to eat the other two (for reference, they weren't super fresh however they did not taste nearly as fishy as the salmon avocado roll was; they were edible with soy and wasabi). Sad to have had this takeout experience twice as I have only had positive experiences dining in. Maybe in the future I will try again but definitely not for takeout. read more

Quality sushi and traditional Japanese dishes in Tarrytown. Authentic, thoughtful Japanese cuisine in a market overcrowded by simple "Asian fusion" fare. I've dined in and taken out from My Tokyo in its first months on Main Street in Tarrytown, and it's been an always-enjoyable experience. With their sushi and maki rolls offering fresh, flavorful cuts of tuna and yellowtail, the basics are well-represented. More impressive and cementing My Tokyo as a worthwhile and unique addition is the assortment of non-sushi Japanese dishes, all that I've tried to far garnished fancifully while remaining authentic. The artful presentation of the tonkatsu, served with an excellent cabbage "coleslaw," is as appealing visually as the thin, lightly-fried pork is tasty. And my first experience anywhere with okonomiyaki was a great one at My Tokyo. The famous streetfood pancake of shredded cabbage, bacon, and shrimp is topped with swirls of mayo (likely Kewpie, Japanese-style) and sweet okonomi sauce, then layered with bonito flakes. It's a very rich smattering of flavors I look forward to trying again. Though I only had the 'yaki as take-out, and the composition was a little more of a stew than a firm pancake. Dining in at My Tokyo can be a crowded affair, though as full as the small space might be, tables allow for elbow room. The waiters are efficient and very personable; the entire staff friendly, which is a plus in a small restaurant where you're always around staff. If there's criticism to level, it's perhaps in the composition of some of the menu, rather than the quality of the food itself. Sushi bars are generally expensive, with My Tokyo's cuisine certainly a pricier outing, especially for the minimalist style of Japanese food. Meals are accompanied by a meager salad and cup of miso soup. Good, like the rest of the food, though perhaps there could be a bit more to pad out the meal for hungry diners. My Tokyo is a win for Westchester Japanese cuisine, an area of international food that is too-often sidelined by excessive maki rolls (deep-fried, over-the-top rolls not to be found here!) and cross-pollination with Thai or other East Asian cuisines. My Tokyo is a new Japanese restaurant in Tarrytown. It's cute inferior with exposed brick walls and wooden tables make it a cute place for lunch or a intimate spot for dinner. The fun part of My Tokyo is that you can BYOB (bring your own booze), which is pretty rare in the restaurant scene from what I can tell. My Tokyo offers an extensive lunch specials menu. When we went for lunch, we were pretty happy with the options provided to us at a pretty cheap price. Also, we noticed that a lot of people ordered take out so it seems that My Tokyo is also a great option for carry out. We ordered the sashimi box and 2 rolls (spicy salmon and eel roll). The lunch prices are pretty decent. I got two rolls for $9 which is pretty cheap! The rolls were pretty good so I wouldn't mind coming here for my sushi fixins. I liked the spicy salmon roll. It had a good amount of spice without wasabi. The tempura veggies in the sashimi box were oilier than I am use to and the pieces of sashimi are also quite thick.
