Not many good Japanese restaurant left in Westchester. My favorite was s Tsuru but that when to a Chinese owner and it when south fast. The same with Ichi Rikki. Once we did not see the old Japanese couple, we ditched this place too. We live near by Sazan and never tried it. When we first approached we were apprehensive but then we saw Japanese customer entering the restaurant it was a good sign. We are sushi eater so we never eat stuff like "chicken terriyaki" which is for westerners. So thumbs up for sushi. read more

My family and I have been coming here for a while now and it's fine. The tables are really close together and you can hear everything everyone else says, which I don't really like. The food's usually okay. My brother seems to enjoy it a lot. He always gets the shrimp tempura. I got the chicken teriyaki today and I didn't like it at all. The chicken was dry and too burnt in some places. It just wasn't satisfying. My brother let me taste his ice cream and that was probably the highlight of my meal today. I'd suggest getting something other than the chicken teriyaki in my opinion. read more

Stumbled onto this place going upstate. Sushi bar, omakase and was very surprised at not only the quality of the food, but the selection. Way off the charts for a small place not doing fancy ass billon dollar per person must apply to the chef to get a seat. Was not cheap, but given the skill of the chef, the overall quality of the fish and the fact that every piece of sashimi and sushi was on point, I consider it good value. Lovely shrimp head tempura as well between courses. Highlights were two different types of mackerel, melting o-toro and Hokkaido uni with extremely crisp nori. I appreciated that the chef changed up the nori for a final maki to end the meal. Real attention to detail. I can easily say that I have never had such good sushi in the States outside of NY and LA than this little place tucked into a nondescript strip mall. read more

I really can't believe this place is still open. The food is good and pretty much the only thing earning this restaurant a second star, but also rudely overpriced. The service here isn't too wonderful. Totally rude, sexist, wait staff who pretty much ignore you or make glaring eye contact. If you want good sushi or traditional Japanese cuisine go to Sushi Mike's over in Dobbs Ferry. This place is ridiculously arrogant and straight up rude for no reason. read more

I agree with aaron z. that Sazan is a pretty good restaurant, though I think it is a little better than middling for a review. I like the understated decor, kinda zen in a small room with few decorations. The service is good, though they tend to bring dishes out in surprising order. An entree can arrive with the appetizer for one in a party and the sushi at the end of the meal for another. That's my one gripe. The food can be really special, though. And, seasonal specials (fried oysters, vegetable tempuras) are always so incredibly fresh that it is revealing. The sushi is outstanding, with the kind of extended sushi menu that you expect in the best Japanese restaurants. The gracious staff is not always completely clear about communicating the intricacies of the menu, but if you are comfortable looking beyond the California Roll (which, by the way, is great), you can find giant clams, abalone, and varieties of tuna that I don't completely understand. Also, they have an interesting variety of sake, with distinctions that are also beyond me, but were amazing to a more knowledgeable friend. Fortunately, they also have a well matched wine selection, including by the glass, and Japanese beers. Nice place for a special dinner, quiet and satisfying. Not really a place for kids; it's too small a dining room to cover the inevitable noise. For a real treat sit at the sushi bar and ask to be given an authentic variety of samples that would satisfy a Japanese expert. The sushi chefs love the challenge and you will be floored. I would recommend this sushi restaurant to anyone looking for a solid meal. Little pricey, about 10% more then expected for everything but very good and worth it to ensure a good meal. When your eating raw fish, usually not a good idea to skimp. Upon walking in the place was small but nice and moderately filled and glancing at the crowd we had high expectations. Hot towel to start was nice and we were promptly brought menus and shown specials. The sushi menu didn't have most the of the typical Americanized sushi dishes so I don't know if they don't offer them or their just not on the menu. In either case we didn't ask and ordered sushi for two. The pieces were fresh, especially the salmon which was delicious. They had a huge list of appetizers as well as sushi. We had the miso eggplant and shrimp dumplings, both solid. Miso soup was also very good. The sushi chef came over to point out what each piece was and ask if we enjoyed our meal, nice touch. He was very appreciative of the tip we gave directly to the sushi chefs as well. Solid and I will be back. read more

Awesome authentic Japanese restaurant in the Westchester county area. I love this place because the food feels and tastes super authentic - oh and the owners are actually Japanese. My favorite is to come grab a bento box for lunch. Yes you might've heard, the prices here are a bit high, BUT for lunch they're actually very competitive! So if you're tight on cash but still want to indulge in some Japanese cuisine, stop by here for lunch and grab a bento. The best Japanese food in the area, hands down. I've been going here with my parents for something like 20 years, and it never gets less good. The dishes range from beginner (spicy tuna roll) to authentic (egg custard with seafood). I always get the bara chirashi and haven't found one comparable. This Sushi place is incredible! The fish is top quality! Very traditional. If you like the simplicity and taste of traditional high quality sushi this is the best place in Westchester. I encourage you to explore the per piece menu as this is when you can really experiment and really enjoy the breadth and quality of some of the fishes that appear behind the bar The lunch box during the week is a great deal at like 11 or 12 bucks and is well worth the money but it won't blow your mind. It's more of a bang for your buck proposition. If you love sushi as much as I do then I encourage you to test the depths of the per piece menu and explore all the quality and variety Sazan has to offer. This place rivals some of the best joints in NYC in my opinion and that probably logically makes it some of the best stuff in the world. Horrible service. Food is good. But the service is horrible. The service guy kept saying to leave immediately after we finished eating even though there were empty tables. They can't split the check if you don't eat more than 50 dollars per person. I understand their system, but what I couldn't understand was the service man was totally looking down on me. Atmosphere is bland. No charm. Did not order sushi so cannot comment on that, but the entrees are way over priced for the quality of food. The Nabeyaki Udon was pretty good, but the chicken inside was all lumped up and kind of dry. The pork entree was tasty, but not very tender. I would have expected tender meat for the price tag. The salmon wasn't bad, but not particularly flavorful either. The rice was kind of dry, too. The miso soup was so tiny with ultra tiny tofu pieces which again seemed weird for a place that charges so much! I am not big on big portions or anything, but it just seemed extra tiny. And somehow the ice cream was huge?!? The one entree came on an old plate with a old crack on it. If the restaurant was busy, I would understand. However, there was only one more table. That old plate should have been the last one to be out. Both entrees came with a side of vegetables which probably was the best tasting thing out of everything. The only thing is that it was mostly bean sprouts. I like bean sprouts and don't have anything against them except that bean sprouts are one of the most cheapest vegetables. So I do not understand how the prices can end up being so high. It seems like the place is trying to be upscale, but fails to be so. And apparently children are not really welcome here. No high chairs. They didn't even bring the children little plates, forks or spoons. We went early on a slow Sunday so I don't know why they could not be more accommodating. Sazan is the pinochle of deliciousness. Everything we've ordered we've loved. We highly recommend the Gyu Ponzu, and the shaved Daikon with mushrooms. It was sublime. Even my 11 year old daughter enjoys it! The tofu made at the table is exquisite. But since Fujnoya opened on Central Ave, we have not gone as much but that is purely a distance decision. Not sure if he is the owner, but the guy who was serving us rushed us, got visibly impatient when we were trying to figure out the menu and the options (wouldn't explain the options), and then just left us while we were in the middle of ordering to go to the kitchen and came back asking "ok, are you ready?" (and to be clear, we were looking at the menu for literally like 20 seconds trying to figure out where the rolls he was talking about were listed- because he won't explain what roll options there were). We have never seen such service. He was not very courteous to other customers either and had a very brusque manner. Not going back as the experience was very unpleasant. read more

I'm an American who stayed in Tokyo 3 months in 2012. This place was like a nice casual restaurant there. excellent.

I went there on a weekday lunch. The restaurant was practically empty and I think there were two or three more small parties who came during the entire lunch time... Lunch special was a bargain, but sashimi was OK and everything was just OK. The amount they served was a lot and I definitely did NOT go home hungry, but I was not that happy about the quality of food. There was Negimaki which was kind of too big. I have to say that the food lacked intricate Japanese touch. I guess this place exist because it is Westchester, but it won't survive if it were in NYC, I suppose. read more

I really like this place. My husband and I have gone to this restaurant for almost 10 years; there was a period a few years ago when I felt like it was uneven, but lately they are back to their authentic best. I think the comment about the cracked plate is from that time. They have the longest list of appetizers that are what I believe are completely authentic and delicious. I also appreciate the un-fussiness of the food--and no yucky mayonaise sauces or Americanized sushi rolls. This is the real thing and the fish is really fresh. I love the Hijiki, not unique but a large, very tasty portion. Age Tofu is also very good here. Also the UNIQUE Chirashi Bara Deluxe is a wonderful idea that I have not seen anywhere else. Chirashi is usually sliced sashimi on top of rice. But this is the most wonderful assortment of sashimi, diced, mixed, and placed on a bed of slightly sweetened rice. I know it sounds odd but it is DELICIOUS and the flavors mix beautifully. This would be a nice thing to order if you have not been able to eat the more adventurous sushi flavors like sea urchin, and want to try them, since they lend the most subtle tastes to the mix. This is very understated in decor, simple and clean. You can dress up or wear jeans but it is a pleasant place to eat. I think the person who said it was overpriced did not know how to recognize authentic Japanese food. It is subtle and you can really taste the ingrediants without the overlays of tons of salt and complexity that westerners often demand. SErvice is a bit intermittant, but I have never minded. Take some time to eat here and you will like it. read more
