For years, I've driven by this Pizzeria on the corner coming from work. I never stoped to try it because I had my favorite one already. One day, my son purchased a pie from there and bought it home. I fell in love. The pie was baked perfectly and topped with a very good sauce. That didn't overpower the cheese. I continued patronizing the restaurant even after the ownership changed, since (initially) the overall quality of the food and service were maintained. Unfortunately, over the past year, there have been one too many regrettable experiences: incorrect orders, overcooked pizza, undercooked wings, to name a few. The quality of the food is now inconsistent and unreliable and the customer service non-existent. I waited over an hour for a mistake made by the restaurant to be fixed. By the time the driver finally arrived with what I imagine was the correct order, I was so fed up, I returned everything and canceled the order. When I called, the manager's response was short and unapologetic--showing me my business is clearly not appreciated. I ordered through grub hub and was not able to leave a review there for whatever reason. I ordered a slice with onions and mushrooms. The onions were raw.......... the mushrooms were hardly heated up. The whole order was mildly warm, the cheese was not fully melted on the Sicilian I ordered either . I arrived before I received the notification that my order was ready. There are so many other businesses that are struggling to stay open and really value their customers and the food quality they put out. There are three pizzerias surrounding this one. I'm originally from Queens and it is very hard to find a bad slice. Scala's was the first pizzeria I tried upon moving to MV. I wish I could say the pizza was phenomenal because it's located right down the street from me. Talk about convenience! I ordered a couple of slices, plain and pepperoni, both were way too salty. Scala has undergone some renovations in the past few years. A little cosmetically inside with new painting and some shingles to give it a more comforting feel. People rave about Joe's and yes, Joe's has great slices and a full dining room, but while you won't mistake it for a sit down restaurant, it's the food and great prices that keep me coming back. I am not exactly sure, but I think in the past two years there is an older woman there who may be doing the cooking. And the sauce..... the sauce is absolutely addicting. I can eat a plate of it with bread and be satisfied. The meatballs and stuffed shells are excellent. Try any of the Parmesan hero's, they are huge and can fill 2 people. Now, let me be fair- I found it okay, just not what I expected of a Margherita. This pie was THICK. Calling the dough robust does not do it justice. A Margherita should be served on a light airy thin dough, with at least Roma tomato sauce, not some store bought splattering from a spoon. And basil? More than 5 pieces of fresh basil should go down on the pie. I didn't taste any salt, and more importantly there was no olive oil to bring it all together. Maybe I should have asked for a small container. ...something to consider when ordering. I will be ordering again. Maybe not the Margherita next time, but I will order again. This review is actually based on my son's impressions of Scala. He LOVES IT! He also just outgrew an dairy allergy in the last few years (thankfully!) My son has tried the other local pizza places, and keeps returning to Scala. The slices are yummy, big, and satisfying. The place isn't much to look at, but the staff is friendly. My son has been in enough times that they now recognize him and tease him a little bit. They also know to ask, "Want the usual?" They are very friendly and always treat my son with respect, which is not always the case when the customer is a teen. He has tried a few different slices here, but his favorite is just plain ol' cheese... For less than $5 you can get a slice and two canned sodas. They also offer a variety of other options, but the pizza is the reason my son goes there. My only reason for not giving it five stars is that their "salad" pizza, which is cheeseless, is actually a premade cheese pizza from which they scrape of the cheese and then add the toppings (tomato and lettuce). So, if you are allergic to cheese or dairy, as I am, you won't be able to eat their pizza at all. Too bad, because it smells AMAZING! read more

Here's the thing: I'd give it a higher rating if each order was consistent and the time it takes to actually get the pizza was better. I've had to bake pizzas when they arrived because they were underdone and doughy. On busy nights, I've waited as long as 2+ hours - I live 6 blocks away from the store so it's really odd that it would take that long to arrive. When contacted an hour after the order was placed, the staff offered to cancel my order but at some point, waiting seemed a better option than cooking! My favorite pizza place in mount vernon ive been coming here since i was a kid. Their chicken parm pie = out of this world they give you these huge strips of it. Their calzones are really good but sometimes they could use a little marinara on the side. Usually throw in free garlic knots when you purchase a pie which is a small bonus. Have to say I'm giving up on Scala's, I can no longer give them my money. And that's disappointing since we all like their pizza. It's actually getting an order that's the problem. Online orders come anywhere from 60-75 mins after the quoted arrival time-which is anywhere from 35-50 after the order is placed to begin with. This happens almost every order now. You call to check its always the same run around 'it's coming shortly, we got crazy busy' no matter what time of day or night. Tonights order arrived 1hr and 47 mins after I placed it, over an hour after the quoted delivery time. It arrived with the wrong soda, the wrong salad dressing, the pizza was actually cold, COLD, and I was missing something. I called and was told 'so sorry we no have' when I asked about the missing item I paid for, then told 'so sorry someone is on other line' and she hung up on me. So no concern about taking my money, or the fact we have obviously ordered dinner and now someone isn't eating. I understand inventory issues, but this isn't how you handle it. Like many areas in New York, you've got 4 pizza places to choose from within a couple of blocks. Scala's is the best bet if you want a tasty, fairly cheap slice of pizza. It's all pretty standard stuff--nothing too crazy on the menu. But if you're not in the mood for pizza, they do have some other options: stromboli, pasta, calzones, wraps, heroes. The eggplant parm sub is what I end up getting about half of the time I'm there. Scala's only has a few tables, so it's not ideal if you have a group of people. But if you're coming from the train station, or if you're just passing through, it's worth stopping in and grabbing a bite to eat. read more
