The place was clean and had a really great vibe to it especially the girl at the counter that was super friendly, great smile, and recommended the margarita slice which did not disappoint. Came here before heading into the beach . Enjoyed myself a Margherita Pizza which had sesame seed crust and it was good. The cheese was great and the sauce was good not overly sweet or dull. My son enjoyed two slices of a cheese pizza even though one would've been sufficient as it was a nice big size. Service was quick the lady behind the counter was friendly. Four of us enjoyed a delicious dinner last night. If you are looking for old school Italian food, this is the place for you. First of all, the food is delicious, and home made. We had veal parmesan and eggplant parmesan. It comes with pasta or a vegetable, and we chose broccoli raab. Antipasto appetizer. Fresh Italian bread, with real butter. The portions were huge, literally the entire oval shaped plate. We are all good eaters and we all had enough food for an entire second meal. The prices were very reasonable. Been going to Scala's for 20 years. We had a good run. I think they have fairly new owners because the food quality has severely declined. We ordered $180 worth of food; dinners, pizza, salad, apps, dessert and it was a total waste of money. Pizza was undercooked and tasteless, salad was drenched and grilled chicken was like shoe leather. Chicken Francese was tasteless and the fried shrimp was cold with soggy fries. Cheesesteak was the only thing that was good and the rest mediocre. After a long deliberation, the owner, Alice, would only credit me the salad IF I produced a credit card statement. Gluten free pizza is good but hit and miss with the amount of cheese and sometimes too crunchy/ overcooked. Daughter loves the chicken soup here. Son liked the meatballs. Husband likes the calamari salad. read more

Two stars because the pizza was good however the service was terrible. Whoever the server is with the gold hoops, leggings, and hair in a bun, you need to lighten up and not obviously hate your job and take it out on your customers! The chicken caesar wrap was very good, croutons were amazing. The penne vodka pizza was a little underwhelming, i thought there would be more vodka sauce, some slices had almost none. It was still good nonetheless. They were backed up on orders when we went so it took awhile to get our food but the workers were very friendly. Ordered the GLUTEN FREE garden veggie pizza, which includes in the description "Broccoli, spinach, tomato, red onion, roasted peppers, black olives and eggplant." It does not specify that the eggplant is BREADED and not gluten free. Attached is a photo of said description, in which other descriptions specifically say what is breaded (ie. The pizza had good flavor but it was pretty basic pizzeria pizza. I don't expect 5 star dining here so I can't be too harsh. They have serviceable food at a good price. We were visiting family at the Jersey shore for thanksgiving and were looking for a good slice. We live in Texas, where good pizza is really hard to find and great pizza is IMPOSSIBLE to find. But we were raised in NJ, which (IMO) has the best pie in the country. We were saying hi to the Atlantic Ocean in Long Branch and found Scala's on Yelp. Their reviews were spot on. Something as simple as a slice of cheese pizza and we were in heaven! Perfect thin crust and mozzarella with just enough sauce. The sandwich was simple: focaccia with arugula salad, sweet roasted peppers, mozzarella, and chicken. But every component was filled with love and passion for the taste! Chef used reduced balsamic vinegar on arugula, roasted peppers still smelled of fire wood, a remanence of original preparation: roasted inside of wood burning stove! Mozzarella was very fresh, tasted closely like burrata. Focaccia with a slice of tomato was slightly toasted and held the whole sandwich together. What can I say?! Bravo chef!!! read more

We were in West End section of Long Branch and we decided something Italian and I suggested Scalas. I used to frequent this place 20 years ago. As with everything things change. I am told that new owners took over about 10 years ago retaining the name. This place caters to Monmouth University and I assume the locals. The food is somewhat lack-luster. The pizza that I tried was very limp and oily. The Sicilian slice that my friend tried had very little cheese on it and burnt on the bottom. I don't know why he didn't refuse it. Mine was edible. The place as a whole was somewhat untidy. The staff, though, was very friendly. Outdoor eating, weather permitting. I don't have any impetus to return in the near future. read more
