I wrote a review the first time my family and I had dinner here. We enjoyed everything, the calamari, pappardelle pasta dish and especially the service. We have been back at least 4 more times and we decided we will no longer return. The service is now lacking, the calamari is under cooked, and the pasta dish has decreased in size considerably and does not taste the same. I am so disappointed we loved the small neighborhood vibe and the tasty well cooked meal. They forget to bring bread, don't fill up the water glasses or ask if we want more wine. All they seem concern is the next group of guest coming into the restaurant. Too bad!!!! read more

I brought my Aunt & Uncle to this spot after a long day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We all loved it here. The setting of the restaurant is set up really nice but also casual enough where you feel comfortable. My Aunt said it was like eating at someone's home. Bar in the back had the Mets game on. Great spot to chill and drink and eat. I had the Pappardelle with tomato cream sauce and bacon. I mean...a light creamy sauce with BACON!!!!! I dont know why the whole restaurant did not just order this dish. After eating all day and drinking beers all day ...I thought it would make me over full ....not at all. As long as your expectations are properly set, Scalino will be a good experience. First of all, like with most Italian food, you need to eat in the restaurant. If you order it via GrubHub, expect it to come mushed up, cold, or not well presented. That's pretty obvious as far as I'm concerned. I am surprised that people leave negative reviews on here based on take out experience, when that's clearly just an ancillary business for these guys. The food is good. Not great. But fresh and well executed. The tomato cream sauce on the rigatoni was a fairly unsophisticated, straightforward mix of exactly what it says. Nothing fancy. The rigatoni itself was a little al dente for my taste, but a fairly straightforward dish. The Jersey tomato salad was okay; store bought tomatoes (not heirlooms), blue cheese crumbles, and arugula. The fried zucchini flowers were tasty, though a bit heavy. The standout dish was the fettucini with fresh lobster. Now this was an excellent dish. The reason the slightly above average food gets 4 stars is the price. These are very reasonable prices for the food, and you'd be hard pressed to find the same quality at this low price. Thus - great value in this reviewer's opinion. The service experience is rudimentary; gruff but pleasant mom and pop operation that still makes you feel appreciated. I never write reviews but I legitimately think this is the best restaurant in New York City, at least its my favorite. The atmosphere is un-beatable with an un-pretentious staff and a sense of enjoyment felt all around the room. The food is simple and perfect. The menu is short and they focus more on their specials (which is how a restaurant should operate). Their prices are very reasonable and their wine selection works. Their portions are perfect sized; not too big, not too small. You will most likely not leave with leftovers; personally I'm more than ok with that but I understand some people go out to eat looking for enough leftovers to carry them through the next 3 days. I try to come at least once per week. My girlfriend was in the hospital a couple weeks ago and the only thing she wanted was the pappardelle with mint. Obviously I picked it up and brought it to a hospital in Jersey, If that's not good enough testament to how amazing this place is I'm not sure what is. P.S. Background - The lady and I spend a lot of time in Greenpoint and have wandered by this place a number of times. The place is usually at least half filled around dinner time and looked warm and welcoming so we decided to stop in for dinner. Experience - The restaurant is spacious with plenty of tables that aren't right on top of each other which is nice. Lots of wood all over, and a decent size bar with a TV playing sports. The wait staff is all dressed casual (jeans and t shirt) so it was a bit confusing who to talk to when we wanted to be seated, but I didn't mind because it helped the casual feel of the place. Service was fine. I don't recall anything negative, but I don't recall being impressed either. The Food & Drink - We started out with a bottle of wine and shared the fried calamari and the arugula salad. The calamari was nicely fried and satisfying, but the salad was a little small for $9. For our entrees we got the lasagna which was on special, and the pappardelle with smoked bacon which seemed like their signature dish. This is where I was disappointed. While the pappardelle was absolutely delicious, the portion was very small, even by modern pasta shop standards. The lasagna was also lacking. It actually looked sad. It was very thin, maybe 1 or 2 layers of pasta, with a small amount of meat and cheese inside. And it was drowning in a watery sauce. Bottom Line - I was a bit disappointed with this place, but am definitely willing to give it another try, because the potential is there. While this experience may have been 3 stars for me, I can definitely see potentially having a 5 star experience another time. read more

I came here because I live in the neighborhood. My husband and I ordered the lasagna, penne with sausage and broccoli rabe, and tiramisu. The lasagne ($20) had a super watery red sauce (pet peeve) and there was no filling in the layers whatsoever. It was probably the worst lasagna I've ever had. It was flavorless -- before this I wouldn't have believed a red sauce could be flavorless but.. yeah, most underwhelming lasagna ever is here at Scalino... I really think I'd rather eat lasagna at Olive Garden (UGH). The penne with sausage and broccoli rabe ($16) was so bland I was shocked. We kept asking for more parmesan cheese to be grated on top because we felt bad asking for salt, although I should have just asked for the salt shaker in retrospect.. The tiramisu wasn't too bad, but it definitely wasn't the best I've ever had. Overall, we spent way too much on the dinner. In fact, we were so upset that the next evening we cooked lasagna and broccoli rabe/sausage penne at home because we needed better versions. And let me tell you... it's a sad day when my husband and I can make better Italian food at home than an Italian restaurant. read more

I have passed by Scalino several times but never felt excited enough to give it a shot. Maybe because it is basic Italian food in an ethnically interesting neighborhood. Maybe the restaurant's spacious yet oddly empty interior never seemed very welcoming to me. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a shot one rainy Saturday evening. I got the prosciutto and melon appetizer, which I thought may have been a lovely refreshing diversion, but the prosciutto lacked flavor and there wasn't enough of it. The taglierini with meat sauce was reasonably tasty, although I would have preferred a firmer bite. I don't think I'll return here - the pricey menu does not justify the average food. read more

Pasta was perfectly cooked and I definitely enjoyed my pappardelle in tomato sauce with bacon - bacon definitely makes life better! at least for me. Before I start, I have to admit I either don't like Italian food or at best don't think it's anything special. Why did I even come here you ask? Because my friends chose this place. It's not bad overall, but I just really do not prefer Italian food. I ordered their ravioli, which did taste good, but you never get much ravioli whenever you order it out. You don't get many and pasta is never satisfying/filling so I just paid $11.00 for what I would consider a snack. Other people who ordered the carbonara loved it and actually got a decent portion. However, it was a special menu item and pretty expensive for pasta. The place is just expensive in general. I would have gotten fish if I wouldn't have felt guilty for paying so much. It seems that this place is very mom and pop- which is cute, but also means there is only one waiter. Therefore, the service is a little slow, but honestly I didn't notice too much because I was chatting with friends the whole time. As other people have mentioned, they try to account for the slower service by giving free refills on wine. The fact that they are cute and do this is the only reason I give this place 3 stars instead of 2. I guess if you really like Italian food then you might want to give this place a try. I just don't understand the appeal of Italian food though. read more

This place isn't pretentious and the servers were very friendly, the space is warm and casual and actually conducive to conversation; such a rarity these days! We ordered the eggplant parm, spaghetti bolognese, fried calamari, mixed greens and all tasted great and seasoned well (not under or over - just right) and nothing felt greasy. Scalino is everything you want in a neighborhood Italian joint: very fair prices; excellent, fresh homemade pastas; no frills, but lovingly tacky decor. The two guys who run this place are efficient and knowledgeable, and the service is always perfectly fine. I've never had to wait, though the restaurant is rarely empty. Nicely located on Manhattan Ave. half a block from the train, and they're delivering on Seamless now. Side note: they have a sister restaurant (also called Scalino) in Park Slope on 7th Avenue. This place has red sauce prices (~$16 for pasta) but is much nicer than a red sauce joint. We had really great fried squash blossoms filled with mascarpone that came with a nice aioli. Before it came out, our server/I think the manager said, "I don't care if you don't want more bread, I'm bringing you some because you're going to want it when you see the squash blossoms." He was right because we mopped up all of the aioli and melted mascarpone with the bread. I got tagliatelle with lobster and they gave me a LOT of lobster (this was $22 or $23 because it was a special, but that's a lot of lobster for that price). My fiancé got the pappardelle with thick cut bacon -- again, very generous with the protein, and all of the pastas were perfectly al dente. The two buddies working here (we came during lunch so it wasn't crowded) were very CBS sitcom-y -- they were loud and funny and riffed off each other. Definitely coming back. read more

They have different appetizers each day and the pasta is beyond any pasta I have every had and my good friends mother and grandmother use to cook food for us all the time. Knew I'd be back and knew Scalino would not disappoint our pasta desires. They have earned my 5 star "Favorite Italian" rating in Brooklyn. Service, meals, atmosphere, wine and company were all outstanding at this comfortable neighborhood bistro. Started with a yummy vegetable soup in a clear broth that was a perfect comfort starter on this snowy evening. So was the shared side dish of sautéed spinach with golden garlic cloves. Our table enjoyed three different penne pasta dishes; garlic/oil, broccoli, and perfect marinara sauce. And yes, the waitress/chef were more than accommodating our vegan requests and made us feel right at home. Love this spot and will make it a regular stop on our next trip to Greenpoint. read more

Pasta dishes are good. The rigatoni with pink sauce and turkey sausage is tasty. Bread is sometimes a day past its prime but it's worth overlooking for a good bowl of pasta. Delivery is a whole other deal. Not a fan. read more

Came here during the week for the $10 lunch special (any pasta and a house salad) and was blown away by how delicious and simple it was. I recommend the spinach and ricotta ravioli. Came back on the weekend for dinner with my girlfriend and we each got something from the special board. I had pork shoulder and she had lasagna. Both were phenomenal. So delicious and light. I think we ate everything in like 2 minutes. The service was excellent and professional. The food also came quick and the restaurant was packed. This restaurant is a great new addition to the neighborhood! I went here with my boyfriend for our Saturday date night and had no trouble getting a table. The atmosphere was fun, and the restaurant could easily make for a quiet date night or a fun group dinner. The food is a pretty standard Italian menu, with a sizable list of specials that all looked very tasty. The calamari was lightly fried and a generous portion. We shared the Pappardelle with tomato cream & smoked bacon and the Braised Lamb Shank with white beans. The meat was tender and fell off the bone, and the white beans were a perfect complement to the meat. The pasta sauce was creamy and savory and the bits of bacon were delicious. Yum. We shared a chocolate mousse that was very delicious as well. I could easily have eaten more mousse if we hadn't gotten the last one :) The service was also stand out. The waiters/hosts tended to every table, and made you feel comfortable and taken care of. The entire experience was very lovely. The prices were very reasonable, with entrees ranging from about $12-18 . For the quality and portion of food, it's a great deal. The only reason this didn't get a perfect 5 stars from me was because they only serve wine. If they had beer or liquor, then it would definitely have it all. I enjoy wine, but my boyfriend really prefers a cocktail or a beer, so on date night, it would be great to have the option. I thought GP Scalino was charming, and I think its very well intentioned. The guy that they have serving and bar tending on most of the weekdays works extremely hard and is super friendly. It does seem a little too quaint because its sometimes only him in there, but better quaint than too flashy. The pasta is good, sauces seem fresh and homemade and the prosciutto is great.
