I'm giving two stars for the pappardelle being well made, well cooked and paired accordingly. The lack of sauce was an annoyance but the size of the dish was unreal. Had this chef been on Chopped he would have been embarrassed. I called them after receiving my delivery as I was confused whether or not the mistake was mine in ordering an appetizer portion. "No darling, that's our portion size." I'm attaching the photo because it was that ridiculous. The dish was good. Lovely Monday evening at Scalino in GP. Arrived around 6:30 and were the only people in the entire restaurant, for a good 35 min. Even when we left it was empty but the place had a sense of simplicity and authenticity that can't be beat. Almost like they don't waste time on too many frills but instead offer quality food at a good price in a chill atmosphere. They don't even have music playing in the background, very uncommon. I assume one of the family members was the person who took our order. The grilled calamari was plentiful and also clean and simple. It tasted very fresh and we got a good portion of seafood for the price. They also offer a fried option but we wanted to be a fraction healthier. For dinner we had the chicken and salmon. I loved how thin the chicken was pounded so that it was easy to digest and seasoned well. It was good quality meat. It was coated with arugula and tomato, my favorite, so a very healthy option. The salmon was along the same lines and came with asparagus. Also delicious. Prices are reasonable for good Italian especially compared the others in the hood. I feel you can't go wrong here. The wine list is also cheap for what they offer, which is a lot. It's so rare to come across no frills, quality, dining IN restaurants, especially in Greenpoint. This is why Scalino stands out and I hope others follow its model. Oh, and the bread bowl was amazing! read more

Food is good. They DO NOT allow substitutes or very few, e.g., Turkey Sausage CAN replace the regular pork Italian sausage in the Penne, Broccoli Rabe, Sausage dish. Do not ask for Grilled Chicken or fish to be added to any other dish outside of its original. This stiffness soured the experience, along with what felt like "anxious" service...and I am being polite. The food was good, especially the Ravioli filled with Spinach and Ricotta. It was covered in a Fried Sage Butter sauce. The Penne, Broccoli Rabe, Sausage dish was delish and filling. The Penne Turkey Sausage dish was in a tomato cream sauce. It was hearty with the noodles cooked decent, a little past al dente but not over. Both required a hefty amount of freshly grated Parmesan and could have been further supported by a pinch of salt. The fried Calamari was light with a fresh but very plain tomato sauce. The olive oil that accompanied the rustic bread slices could have greatly benefited from the addition of salt, hot peppers, and rosemary for a better dipping sauce. The wines are just ok. We would possibly pick up dishes to go but not stay inside, as the atmosphere was frigid and uninviting. Very impressed with this place. When we arrived we were the only people there (7:20pm on a Thursday) but don't let that deter you. We grabbed a seat by the window and were pleasantly surprised by just how good everything was. From the bread and olive oil to our fresh pasta and very nice server, you cannot go wrong here! Always wonderful!! My recent favorite is the lunch special. Salad + pasta = $11. I thought they'd give you smaller portion than dinner but it's the same size!!! Nice menu, quite a variety of dishes We ordered grilled calamari, cooked well Came with caramelized peppers and onions garnished with lemon. Sauteed spinach and broccoli rabe were very well done, could not have done better myself. My guest ordered lasagna, review was great aside from a bay leaf in the middle. Half star off I ordered a rib eye, waitress came back and said no dice....grrr 1/4 star off. I went with the scallops, shame on me I didn't ask if there were sides. I would have expected a potato and a vegetable but the scallops (diver) came out on a salad. To start off food was great honestly some of the best Italian I've ever had. I got the carbonara and my significant other got the short rib entree. Food was very good. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the service, as someone who current works in the restaurant industry I know how taxing being a member of the waitstaff can be. Throughout the entire meal not once did the waitress come by to ask how everything came out, nor did she bother to check up on us. I feel bad because it felt as if we were being singled out because she had gone to every other table conversed with them chit chatted about the wine and we couldn't even get extra napkins. The only person who came by the table was who I presume to be the owner. Again food is great. I'm more upset because me and my significant other were celebrating our anniversary of 6 years and we couldn't even get the bare minimum of service. I will also add this was on a Wednesday and she had about 3 tables when we had gotten there. And yes I left 20% as a tip before anyone asks. read more

This is the neighborhood Italian joint you always hope to find in your area. No frills, but great rustic cooking that doesn't leave you wanting to finance your meal. For appetizer we had the fried calamari, which were lightly battered and delicious. The red pepper sauce that came with it was damn good. Like dip your bread in it afterwards good. We also split the meat & cheese plate, which for $11, is a great deal. We also tried a bunch of the pastas, like the pappardelle with tomato cream and bacon, which was satisfying on every level. The spinach and ricotta ravioli was delicious. Rigatoni with turkey sausage was excellent, and the penne with Italian sausage and broccolini was our least favorite, but still above average. If I had to name one complaint, it would be the ambience. We got there before the dinner rush, and the restaurant wasn't playing any music throughout the night. It was just deafening, painful silence. It's awkward, like a movie with no soundtrack. Get some classy tunes in there to match the food. read more

I would give Scalino's ten stars if I could. Five for the food and five for the service. From the first phone call to make the reservation for 18 of us I could tell the people that work here really care for their job. So we are 18 people on a Saturday night, with 8 of those being children under 6! Everyone was so accommodating with some in our party having dietary restrictions and the kid's meals and desserts. Words cannot properly describe the level of devastation and betrayal I felt when I found out Scalino closed its Park Slope location. There I was, casually walking down 7th Ave, when my glance caught the paper covered windows of the now empty storefront. *Gasp* It can't be true! But it was. And oh, the heartbreak. I loved going to this restaurant. I'd been there many a time, enough to where the staff knew me by face, if not name and knew what I was going to order. (Spoiler - it's always the tomato and bacon pappardelle) And now it was gone. The humanity! But all was not lost. The Greenpoint location still stood. And so to Greenpoint I went. From the moment I walked in, I felt reassured. The waitress welcomed me and I settled in to this cute, cozy spot with the same menu I've come to know and love. I wrote a review the first time my family and I had dinner here. We enjoyed everything, the calamari, pappardelle pasta dish and especially the service. We have been back at least 4 more times and we decided we will no longer return. The service is now lacking, the calamari is under cooked, and the pasta dish has decreased in size considerably and does not taste the same. I am so disappointed we loved the small neighborhood vibe and the tasty well cooked meal. They forget to bring bread, don't fill up the water glasses or ask if we want more wine. All they seem concern is the next group of guest coming into the restaurant. Too bad!!!! read more
