I went to the Yelp app and typed "foodie restaurants" and Scalino was what came up. I wasn't specifically looking for "foodie" so don't ask me why I started typing that - "foodie" is a dumb term. It makes me think of people who overthink their food choices and are more interested in discovering the latest trend/thing...whatever. But I digress. Let's just say that however I got to Scalino I'm glad I did. It was early (5pm-ish) so it wasn't an issue getting a table and immediate service. I ordered the Pappardelle in tomato cream sauce with double smoked slab (?) bacon. The order came in a timely manner, the pasta was fresh and hot! Many things annoy me in life but one of my top peeves is pasta served lukewarm...tepid, flaccid pasta served in a congealed, viscous cheese wad - blech. Again, I digress. Not the case here - to repeat the pasta was served HOT and fresh and the portion was just right. The sauce was perfectly seasoned, the tomato bright and flavorful, the bacon (as advertised) slabbed. Great dish. I ordered one or two glasses of an Italian red - don't ask me which one but the menu is well thought so you can't go wrong. Someone else mentioned the olive oil they serve with the bread - odd I never gave olive oil much thought at other Italian restaurants but whatever Scalino is serving it's phenomenal. I even asked about the brand and where I could purchase it - sadly it's not sold retail. Guess I'll just have to make a return visit. read more

I came here randomly by myself and was so glad I did. The owners were very nice and accommodating. The pasta was the best I ever had and cooked to perfection. Such a lovely spot. Came here one rainy night and had a nice, cozy evening with delicious food. We ordered the burrata and the oyster mushrooms for the table and I also got the Eggplant and Zucchini Parmigiana. Both appetizers were delicious. I looove mushrooms and these were to die for. The parmigiana was one of the best dishes I've ever had. It's light and flavorful and incredibly tasty (I ordered it for takeout a few more times since then and it never disappointed). THIS IS THE BEST RESTAURANT MAYBE EVER. When my friends and I go, it's an Event. We all make sure to wear loose pants. We bring our families here when they visit (and they were impressed.) The food is immaculate and if I was on death row I'd order the calamari, endive salad, and pappardelle. The owners/servers are so kind and funny; the hospitality is phenomenal. Last time we were there they gave us a bottle of wine on the house! I'm in awe of their lunch special. I ordered a Prosecco wine and it was so good. The owner brought the bottle over so I could see the name of it . I'm definitely looking this up when I get back home. I came in looking for a good place to eat near my hotel - The Henry Norman- and saw that Scalino had some good reviews. It is a nice place- good food, good service, good place to people watch and great prices. I ordered the taglierini with Italian sausage meat sausage. My meal with 2 glasses of wine was only $32( they didn't charge me for the 2nd glass ). They have a lunch special for $12( pasta and salad)- so I'm probably gonna return. read more

Horrible owner/manager. Food might be good but not worth the ambiance. We went in at noon on a Saturday only two customers were in the place. I have a toddler & the server and I were trying to figure out best place to sit with the stroller. We picked out a few items and she placed the restaurant's menu iPad on our table. My daughter grabbed the iPad and it fell. As we were attempting to pick it up and put it back in the case the owner starts to yell at the server, then me, then my child. And then comes over to physically handle my child. I had to intervene, I told the server to cancel my order. I also told the man that we order quite often from them and was looking forward to eating there. He said, "I don't care" Please note he went from handling uncooked food and presenting to the two customers that were in a fake Italian accent. To eat at a back table to yelling across the restaurant to attempting physical harm to a child in less than 10 mins. Never once did he wash his hands. I think I know why they place is empty. Me and me mum came here for a late afternoon lunch on a weekday, like election day or something. When we arrived, two of the tables in the spacious restaurant were occupied and mum was sort of skeptical about eating at a place that was practically empty, but eventually I got her to try the place out. Since the restaurant was lacking patrons, we were seated and served right away. The food was okay in my book but my mum seemed to love it. I feel that the waitress/hostess could have been a bit friendlier/nicer since it was rather slow and she didn't have to attend to too many people. Came here with my friend for some Italian comfort food, and boy did this place deliver! "Unpretentious but classy" is definitely the aesthetic. This is honestly going to be one of the nights I remember from 2020! Note: there is no outdoor dining available. It is indoor dining only (well...at least for another day, since NYC is stopping that on 12/14), but it's reduced capacity with a lot of space between people. I felt as comfortable as one can be if you choose to take the risk of doing indoor dining. The food was incredibly tasty and the portion sizes on the more generous side. Aside from customary bread + olive oil, my friend and I split the bufala mozzarella/prosciutto/arugula/tomatoes ($15), and then my friend got the pappardelle with bacon ($17.50) while I got the fettuccine with fresh shrimp ($19.50). Now the thing that REALLY made our experience though was Tim - our waiter (and owner? I see all of the other reviewers also having this question mark...we really need to ask next time :D). From teasing my bestie for being 20 minutes late in a hilarious way, to giving us red wine and chocolate mousse on the house, and to just bringing so much great #dadenergy and conversation, in addition to the quick and efficient service (and wearing a mask, of course)...this was the kind of super-local, good vibes NYC restaurant experience we love and want to support! This was hands down one of the best Italian food experiences I've ever had. Every food item we had from top to bottom was incredible. Grilled calamari was done perfectly, the fettuccine special with beef and mushrooms had levels of flavor in each bite that elevated and complemented the ingredients, the duck and cabbage slaw were shared among the table and the sauce sopped up with bread until the last bite. Top it all off with a cappuccino and tartufo and there was nothing but leaned back sighs in the chair declaring how incredible the whole meal was. The staff was attentive, very helpful (they recommended a delicious montepulciano to go with our meal) and very welcoming. I'm so glad this restaurant is still ok through covid hell! It's a gem in greenpoint! You can't go wrong with the menu, lol it's all about the sauce! So delicious! My favorite is the papperdelle with bacon. Desserts are a must here also. Scalino has been doing delivery and take out since the shutdown and is now doing outdoor dining. And of course the staff is wearing masks and has hand sanitizer available. They're even using one of those new UV mini lights to check the tables after they've sanitized them. Scalino's was such a treat before heading to a birthday party last week. We wanted to grab some good Italian food, nothing too fancy, and Yelped Scalino. Service was great: this is a true neighborhood restaurant with its own kind of local charm and quirk. One of the owners brought the restaurant A-Frame Easel to our table so we knew what the specials for the evening were. Got a chuckle watching that that thing migrate from table to table. I ordered the salmon with zucchini and the boyfriend ordered the pasta with meat sauce. The salmon was super tender and cooked perfectly, and the accompanying roasted zucchini in olive oil was delicious. The pasta also got a hard-to-arrive-at "this is perfect and al dente." Came here on a whim with a group of 6 on a Saturday night around 7:15pm. We literally picked any place that was open and could seat us right away because we were starving. From the moment I called to ask if there was space available till the time we left the restaurant after the meal, the service was amazing! The two servers, who I'm guessing are the owners, are a couple of jokesters who are super friendly, inviting and truly happy to serve a great meal! Now for the food - we ordered 4 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts to share family style: You start off with a bread plate with one of the best olive oils we've ever tasted. I couldn't stop dipping the bread in it. Appetizers: Fresh beet salad - very fresh cheese and beets with delicious balsamic dressing Burrata with red pepper stew - what can go wrong with burrata? Fried Calamari - fried perfectly and very fresh Mussels - good; only 2 out of maybe 20 in the bowl weren't opened so we didn't eat that but I feel that can sometimes be expected. Entrees: Fettuccini with housemade Pesto - I tend to like my pesto with more garlicky flavor but it was still yummy Tagliorini Carbonara - mMmm the pancetta and sauce were delicious Pappardelle with truffle butter - MY FAVORITE. Grilled branzino - you know seafood is fresh when it's grilled and all you need is a squeeze of lemon Grilled scallops - cooked perfectly (not over cooked) and taste was great Dessert: Tiramisu - tasted homemade which is always a plus. This review is solely for my delivery order. I ordered the Rigatoni Scalino. I waited about 40 mins or so. When it arrived and I opened it up, I was baffled. I thought I was being pranked. There was hardly any pasta in there. I literally couldn't believe my eyes. I just paid $22 for this (including tip and taxes) and couldn't believe the little food I received. To top it off the pasta arrived cold! I opened the second tray and to my surprise I had like 6 pieces of bread, really 6 pieces. The bread were hard as a rock which just infuriated me even more because I paid $22 for an empty dish of pasta and 6 pieces of hard bread. I'm only writing a review on Yelp because for some odd reason Seamless didn't let me write a review. I stood hungry and upset. I definitely won't be ordering from here again. read more

We ordered the black angus ribeye, pappardelle pasta with tomato cream sauce and bacon and the grilled calamari. The pasta was super fresh, cooked al dents and the sauce wasn't too heavy. It was super delicious. The ribeye had so much flavored, tender and cooked rare just as we asked for. The grill calamari was a really tasty appetizer for us. Because we live in Williamsburg, we have a much better Italian restaurant that's our go to, D.O.C Wine Bar. We ventured out to Greenpoint so we can try something new. 3.5 stars for me but I want to round up and here's why: Service - Excellent, warm, friendly service. Ambiance - Simple, clean nothing to rave about. Food - Because we live in Williamsburg, we have a much better Italian restaurant that's our go to, D.O.C Wine Bar. We ventured out to Greenpoint so we can try something new. We had the grilled calamari which is great because we rarely find grilled calamari on the menu. Had the Mista salad and the salad presentation was a bit lacking. It was simply greens and tomatoes. The carbonara was a bit too creamy/saucy for our taste. Overall, we had a good experience and am glad we tried it but we wouldn't go out of our way back for it. read more

The bruschetta and squash blossoms were AMAZING! Definitely a must-try. I loved the Gorgonzola pasta and the truffle pasta, which both are very strong in flavor. The pasta tastes homemade and is extremely fresh. The rigatoni with Italian sausage, however, was a bit too salty and definitely needed more tomato and cream sauce to balance the salt/richness of the turkey sausage. If I can make a suggestion, the Gorgonzola pasta would be just a bit better with walnuts added to it! An extra crunch goes a long way. Used to love this place. Was a regular until tonight. We usually order lots of food here but tonight left with a bitter taste. We were a table of four. We stayed a bit late in the restaurant but nobody came to tell us that they were about to close, they even took our dessert order after 10pm and no hint that we should wrap up. Just before paying when he handed us the cheque, my bf stood up to go to the bathroom and was talking to another friend while holding his cars. In the meantime the restaurant manager was waiting for him to put his card, he was getting impatient and looking annoyed instead of just leaving for a minute until we were ready. While I was looking at him he stood there behind my bf with his impatient face and so arrogant I was shocked. He looked that he only wanted his money and completely forgot about good manners. In the meantime the restaurant was being cleaned, tables moved. The smell of chemicals was horrible and de were still finishing pur dessert. Our table was like an island in a terrible mess, I felt line we were being pushed out. And I insist no one came to tell us that they wanted to leave or that it was past the time, we had no idea what time the restaurant was supposed to close. We would have understood if the manager just told us that it was late for them, it's no big deal. We even wouldn't have ordered dessert. But such an attitude is totally unacceptable. I was appalled to see the small serving that was sent to our house. For $16.50, we would have expected much more. Of course, since this was our first time ordering from Scalino, I just assumed this was their portion size. However, when I opened the second container, I found what was a more appropriate portion size. It honestly seems as if their kitchen took a few pieces of pasta from one container and put it in the other to try and get away with the amount of one dish, but get paid for two.
