AVOID this business. Based on my experience, most Schaafsma employees are clueless about their work. Our water heater, installed nine years ago, began leaking in fall 2025 and we called Schaafsma for service. Their inspector determined that our heater had failed, so we spent $5000 on a replacement. The leak returned within a day of installation. A third employee appeared and suggested that the previous installation was faulty and fiddled around for a while. The leak returned one day later. Another inspector arrived, and he was the first person who knew what he was doing. He took one look at the expansion tank nearby, lifted it with one hand and explained that it was flooded, no longer functional and the cause of our leak. Another crew installed a replacement tank and the leaking ceased. This is my question: Why didn't the first inspector bother to conduct a simple check of the expansion tank, which is located next to the heater? Checking the tank required just one hand, no tools, and ten seconds of his time. So thanks to Schaafsma we purchased a $5000 heater when our problem was a $375 tank. I explained this fiasco over the phone and agreed to pay their second invoice but I have serious questions about their reliability. Apparently the person on the phone stopped listening after the first half of my reply, because the only response from Schaafsma was to text and mail demands for the final payment (which I paid today). As their Yelp star average reflects, Schaafsma places a higher value on $375 than on their reputation. If you are satisfied with 1-of-5 odds for a competent employee to show up at your home, Schaafsma will provide just that. If you don't wish to spend $5000 to solve a $375 problem, I strongly recommend that you seek another service. read more

Had our annual AC maint check done and this morning the AC is not working. tried calling several times and the phone message states they are in a meeting. This is not acceptable. There should be someone to speak with directly for urgent matters. a member of this household has medical issues and is a senior citizen. We depend on the AC working and why we have an annual maintenance contract. Very disappointing to find this company does not provide service as described. read more

Second time we have had Schaafsma out. One for the furnace and just now for the AC. Mark was awesome and diagnosed the problem right away and presented me with clear options and explained everything. He even found a warranty for the part needed. He had our AC back up and blowing ice cold air in under an hour. The tech quoted me one price for their monthly maintenance for my furnace and then after he left, I looked at the bill and it was not the same price he quoted me. What a rip off. They charged almost $100 COD to look at a Furnace they installed a few years ago during the winter which they charged over 2 times the amount they should have. Might I add at the time of this furnace they were call for one of their "tune ups ". Which they took the opportunity to shut down the furnace in the middle of a below zero January and for us to buy a new furnace. Now, of course they'll say the reason they did The item that needed to be replaced which any home owner could do they want $498 or close for the item. Lowe's sells it for $51. They also want close to $600 to install it which was literally one small 1/4 hose pulled off and 2 wire nuts. This company should be investigated for taken advantage of peoples situation. read more

We got home on a Sunday night with our house temperature at 51 degrees and falling, with outside temps in the teens. After trying a couple easy fixes Monday morning, I called Schaafsma - because I've seen their trucks and advertisements, the reviews on their website were positive, and their hours showed them open later than other companies, and I needed to get our heat going. Schaafsma was professional and friendly every step of the way. The scheduler on the phone empathized with our lack of heat and said she could get a repair crew out immediately. Within an hour a Schaafsma service crew was on site, diagnosed the problem, and recommended my money would be better spent replacing our 26 year old furnace. Salesman Greg was at our house in 30 minutes, gave a professional presentation and assessment. He worked into the evening to complete our proposal and schedule installation of our new high efficiency furnace. The installation crew was at my home at 9 am the next morning, and within 24 hours of my first call we had heat from our new furnace. They followed up the next day with new, larger ducts. I appreciated the speedy service, the empathy for our no-heat situation, and the friendly, professional attitude of everyone we met and talked to from Schaafsma. read more

What a bunch of crooks. These guys charged me $119 to "inspect" a furnace. When I agreed to have them make the "required" repairs, they apparently couldn't find the unit. It was like three days later. Really? Like they really performed the inspection. According to these folks the "tech left a voicemail". Bullllll-oney. I trusted these guys, I don't live in Grand Rapids, so I really rely on the honestly and integrity of the local vendors. Quite clearly, these bandits are off the list. Now I have to contract with Bel-Aire, pay the inspection fee again and of course still pay for the repairs (I am really curious if there actually are repairs that need to be made, LOL). No star I had terrible experience with Schaafsma. I will not recommend this company to anybody. We didn't have heat last Sat. My furnace is only 7 years old. I called them and was informed $190 to just get in the door plus the repair cost, depends what needs to be fixed. I understood it would be expensive since it's weekend service. I wasn't home. The guy charged us $630. $190 plus $440 for repair. He was at my house 1.5 hours top. He pulled out the filter and adjusted the gas pressure, told us 3 parts need to be replaced which will cost another $1055, suggested the ductwork need to be corrected and change humidifier. And we needed to call order parts on Monday. I was so terrified I will not have heat again. I checked all reviews. Great review on google but bad on Yelp. I was so nervous I will be out of heat again so I decided to order parts with them. Luckily, my husband's friend warned us to stay away from this company. I cancelled the order right away and got a second opinion. The technician told me the parts they recommended to replace are working just fine, just needed to clean ( yes the guy from Schaafsma didn't even clean them and charged me $440) and informed us the reason we were out of heat because the filter was dirty and we needed thinner kind. Also it wasn't necessary to change the ductwork now but when I got a new furnace. And humidifier worked just fine. He charged me only cleaning the furnace at $89 not by hour. and went through with all details with me. He was there 1 hours 45 min. I called Schaafsma and told them about the second opinion. I talked to Chris, service manager and asked how $440 came from since he didn't change any parts. He couldn't explain it to me but informed me it's a flat rate charge. I don't think it's right since the employee I talked to told me the repair cost was based on what they were doing on the job not flat rate. And my heat is still working without replacing any parts. He also told us we got the wrong kind of filter but didn't even let us know what the right kind we should get. As you quoted " sometime it becomes one contractor's word against another". The second company didn't say any bad thing about your company. In contrast, the technician told us your technician who helped us on Sat was very good. I'm certain the technician from second company was very good as well that's why friends and family recommended to us. If the parts need to be replaced right away to get the furnace stays working, I'm sure he will tell us, who doesn't want to make more money, instead of only charge us $89 for furnace tune up, cleaned the parts that need to be cleaned (not to replace)and fixed the small leak that your guy could have done. My furnace isn't perfect. The company that installed it didn't do a good job but this guy didn't try to make me scare by giving me opinions everything seemed wrong and need to replace NOW otherwise you will not have a heat! To be fair to you, If my furnace stops working soon, I will repost it and let everybody knows that your guy is right. Also I will repost in a month if my furnace is still working. But if those 3 parts need to be replaced like your technician advised us, it will cost only half of your company quoted us. Also we will get itemized invoice how much of each item, and how much for labor per hour from this company. I learn from this experience. **Updated at the bottom** $310 (plus $150) for a 30 minute circuit board swap? My furnace is only 6 years old. I am hoping for a positive resolution after the weekend. Still under warranty, Schaafsma assessed $310 labor (plus $150 call fee) to replace one circuit board - the one with a known issue - (a 30 minute board swap by the Schaafsma tech). I am hoping they will remedy this with at least a partial refund after the weekend. Facebook response: "We don't charge by the hour we do flat rate pricing. I am the marketing coordinator, will be happy to discuss this with the service manager tomorrow. Thank you". This is encouraging. Since Schaafsma had no Saturday evening emergency service available during this arctic vortex, I had to call a Vredevoogd tech in. She reported the circuit board/pressure sensor is a know issue with Bryant/Carrier furnaces and it would need a replacement circuit board and should be covered under warranty. I would need to wait until Monday for warranty service. An 8:00 AM call to Schaafsma on Sunday morning and we had one of their techs over by noon. He performed the circuit board swap and as he drove away the furnace failed. He returned in an hour, readjusted fan parameters, and after he left again the furnace recycled a couple of times. We are watching it closely as the temperature dips. I will be contacting Schaafsma for at least a partial refund and assurances. I look forward to writing a positive review of how Schaafsma turned this negative situation into a positive one. ** I am happy to report that Chris, of Schaafsma service, and I came to an agreement. The 3 stars are for the initial shock and dismay of the labor cost for the board swap. If I could give these guys negative stars I would! They are by far the most crooked, shadiest company I've ever dealt with. They used car salesman tactics to pressure me into an overpriced furnace, which was then installed incorrectly. And eventually determined to not work. Did I get a refund, no, but they offered to then sell us a different furnace that they said might work. These guys are CROOKS. I would recommend my worst enemy use them. read more

When buying our house, the home inspection (Feb) uncovered that the original furnace was leaking CO, so the current owner immediately had a new furnace installed that night by Schaafsma. When we took possession of the house end of March we were given a shoebox of papers/manuals for the appliances. In the box was a letter from Schaafsma with a footnote saying that the furnace had yet to be inspected. We called the city mechanical inspector who came out early July. Was told it DID NOT PASS due to an electrical issue on the unit, and their method of venting- which went out the back of the house, through our 3-season porch (a non-heated room which should have required some sort of insulation on their pipes) and ended right outside our back garage door in a walk-way (blocking/obscuring part of a walk-way is a no-no). There is a much shorter route they could have taken out the front of the house, but it requires cutting through the decorative brick on the exterior. (I'm told by my father-in-law who is an Electrician and deals with similar issues all the time that cutting brick is simple if you have the correct tools). Contacted Schaafsma after they never reached out to us from the Inspector's report to them. They had to send someone out to "check the issue". Guy tried to claim that everything was fine. Didn't want to go through the brick because there is a flower bed out front that might get messed up. Flimsy excuses. Waited another couple weeks then had to contact them again. Now they are sending us a QUOTE to try to get us to pay for the changes that shouldn't have had to be made in the first place. On top of the bad installation issues, they didn't put the air intake outside either which affects the efficiency of the unit. This is not something that will fail an inspection, though maybe it should since it makes the product worth less. Most people have no idea and probably have units with similar intakes. As I said above, my husband's father is an Electrician (as is my husband, if it comes to that) and he has to pull permits all the time. Typically the person/company pulling the permit is required to schedule inspections. The fact that Schaafsma did not have this done themselves and only left a mention in a small footnote of a letter is fishy. It almost appears like they were hoping an inspection would never happen. I can only speculate. Would never choose to work with this company again ever. Really wishing that working with them was never thrust upon us. read more

We have had Schaafsma for years and have never had any problem with the service and we do the "red carpet" every year. They let us know when the service is do for our A/C and our furnace so we don't have to keep track. Once the service is scheduled they inform us who will be coming and the time the technician will show up. We have never had a technician show up late and if anything tend to be right on time. I appreciate the call from the tech letting us know he's on his way. We won't be using anyone other than Schaafsma and I highly recommend them. read more

Horrible experience! Our a/c was not working great, so thought I would have Schaafsma take a look at it. They were going to charge us $2400 to "fix" it! Luckily, I was able to call a local HVAC company who came out right away and was able to put coolant/freon in for $250 and it's working great. read more

I was just quoted over $310 to install a humidifier solenoid valve - an Aprilair 4040. No thanks, that's unreasonable = 1,000% markup over the $34.64 I just paid for the same valve including shipping. Even backing out $90 for one hour labor to install, that's 588% markup. Most people can manage the install with two wrenches in most cases. Service Tech was prompt, careful, and courteous. read more

I drive past this place all the time, so I thought oh it's in the neighborhood why don't we have a local place check us out for our air conditioning. We just moved in a few months back during winter time so we weren't able to see if it worked out not. Had a guy truck #21 come to the house and look at our unit. After he was back there he came to me and said their was a rats nest and chewed up wired and there is no power from the unit to the house. So I hem and haw about it and decide not to get it fixed because he didn't know how much our end result would be. We had another person come out and check it out... he said it was just fine, there weren't chewed wires at all, he said it'll be a little loud because it's an old unit but it will workout just fine... it's working just fine... so it was BS he was trying to feed me because I didn't have a clue about the unit and just wanted to make "easy money" off of me.. don't go with this guy! read more
