It's only a 25-30 minute drive south to the Wilmer Eye Institute and our experience with him was phenomenal. The wait time was never long, 10-15 minutes max, which was important when bringing a one-year-old in for appointments. They have a separate waiting area for kids with toys and books, and all of the nurses and Dr. Repka have an excellent rapport with kids - not just my daughter, but her big brother (who was 5 at the time and worried about his little sister's upcoming surgery). Dr. Repka immediately affirmed that my daughter needed to have surgery and scheduled her a few weeks out. He was very reassuring to all of us as we approached the surgery and especially the morning of, when we had to be at JH's surgery center downtown. Both parents and big brother were allowed to wait with her in the pre-op area prior to the surgery. The surgery was successful and we had three great follow-up appointments. At the time of the third appointment, we told Dr. Repka we were moving to San Diego and he referred us to several of his colleagues for continued care. I just wanted my daughter to have the best care possible, and was very glad I made the decision to see Dr. Repka. There is not one thing I would change about the experience with this doctor or the Wilmer Eye Institute.

Dr. Edward Kuwera is a pediatric ophthalmologist who specializes in strabismus and other eye disorders. We were very excited to get an appointment with him as an expert in his field to see our granddaughter who has had misaligned eyes (or strabismus) since an infant. For various reasons, her parents didn't get the corrective surgery for her before the typical age of 3 years old. Dr. Kuwera and team did a very thorough examination and asked us lots of questions. Even after explaining her current reading comprehension challenges that put her below grade level in reading, the new "wiggle" in her eye (that he stated he observed as well), and her clumsiness, which could mean brain impact, he stated that her vision is OK with glasses and that at 9 years old she must decide if she should have the corrective surgery. His reasoning for leaving the decision to her is that there are few things that children get to decide in life. He added that children don't decide when they are born or who their parents are or their name, etc. Therefore, he asks older children whether they have any concerns about their vision or social interactions and if they want to correct their eyes. He stated that if we challenged him on this approach then he would refer us to another doctor. Well, on the other hand, he asked us as grandparents to decide if our granddaughter could have a lollipop (or three) and told her to ask us when she could eat it. We made that decision. Overall, leaving medical or other decisions to children under 13 years old is not our parenting style. If it is your style, then you are with the right doctor if you must take your child to Dr. Kuwera. If it is not your style, I just thought that you should know this before you go. Called Johns Hopkins Hospital today to try to schedule a consult. I started off saying that I had an MRI with certain results noted and wanted to schedule with a certain doctor for consult. I was given a lot of pushback by the scheduling person that I needed a confirmed diagnosis. We went back and forth multiple times and finally she was like oh your MRI note qualifies as a confirmed diagnosis. Wild considering I said it a couple of times already though I don't know what exactly a confirmed diagnosis is as a patient! Then she proceeds to ask for all this information on DOB, address, demographics, and other info. Creates an account. She only asked if I allow texts from the clinic for notifications but not if she can create an account. Then says you still need to gather your medical notes and imaging then upload in one spot and fax in another. Then subjected to a review before knowing if I can see this one doctor. Or I can go on their website and pick another doctor to request a consult and that doctor will confirm if it's a fit. Either way it feels like it was an invasion of privacy without consent or desired outcome...I only want to provide all this info if we're actually scheduling something and I thought that was where we were headed. It was not. I feel like this process has major data privacy issues - creating an account without asking me, collecting personal data without need, and just wasting my time in not even being able to set an appointment. I provided all of this only to find out that no we can't schedule an appointment yet and I never gave consent to creating an account like this (got a text message saying an account was created) and would not have if I knew I was not being scheduled at the end of all this back and forth. It should be upfront that this is the process then asked if I want to proceed. Instead, all the data was collected then I was told. The initial pushback suggested that I had to undergo a review by a group of folks to approve for Dr. He to see me because I didn't have a confirmed diagnosis. Then it turned into this is just the process in general to see him. Overall, process was incredibly frustrating and I would not wish it on anyone who is going through a trying medical time. 1. Pushback based on saying I didn't have a diagnosis when I already shared what she was looking for even if I didn't know what she was looking for 2. Pushback trying to redirect me back to my PCP for a diagnosis when I shared the MRI finding and that my PCP said it is best for a specialist to handle next step as we were not clear what to do 3. Pushback saying I need a group of people to review my case to see if the medical circumstances qualify for Dr. He to consult on because I supposedly didn't have a confirmed diagnosis - fine but then we confirmed the diagnosis and then it shifted to this is the general process 4. Pushback that I misunderstood her pushback that I either do all this legwork of collecting paperwork and uploading and faxing in two different spots to hopefully pass this mysterious group review to schedule an appointment or find another doctor and request a consult and hope they believe it's also a fit While I don't doubt the doctor is great, the front door to clinics is incredibly important - not only to help ensure the providers can focus as much as possible on what they do best but also being responsible in how they interact with patients and their data.

I contacted the front desk, got an appt for tomorrow, and asked what the expectation was and front desk told me $130 for follow up visits. I asked to speak with billing, reached the same Cindy, and from the very start of the call, she was interrupting me, yelling over me, extremely rude after I just wanted clarity on what the out of pocket expense is. I requested a supervisor, she claims she is the supervisor. And I said the way she speaks to people is inappropriate. She claimed I never provided insurance information. I gave the info to her in writing the day of. She had everything and I was forced to pay anyway. At this point, i asked her if she had any proof in writing she informed me she would bill my insurance, and she said no. Obviously not, because I paid. I asked to cancel the appt. She refused to cancel my appointment and decided to be petty and ask me for an email in writing stating I want the appointment canceled.
