Got there about 11am this morning so I wasn't expecting an amazing bagel. The nova was good and you can't beat it with onions, capers, and tomato with plenty of scallion cream cheese. The coffee was just O.K. but again getting there late it wouldn't have been as hot and fresh as an earlier arrival time would have experienced. The bagel itself was a bit tough and honestly looked a little like it had been baked for a shorter time in a hotter oven than for the proper amount of time in the right temp oven. But, that was my observation. The rest of my group seemed sated by their bagel sandwiches but the consensus was "nothing to write home about" The staff was accommodating. Quant little shop that's a little off the beaten path for those who stick to St. George st. The staff was very kind and quickly got our orders to us. The lady who took out orders even gave my pregnant friend a free muffin because she was feeling a little famished from walking in the heat. Stopped in yesterday to grab breakfast with the family. My youngest was beyond "hangry". The staff was so patient and understanding, they didn't bat an eyelash at her fussiness. We successfully ordered and sat down to enjoy breakfast. Being a transplant from the northeast, I haven't had a great bagel in years. This was it! The bagels and cream cheeses were phenomenal. Great place for breakfast. My wife got an onion bagel with lox, capers, and cream cheese. I ordered the egg sandwich with sausage on a french toast bagel(I didn't even know there was such a thing as a french toast bagel but I highly recommend). We loved both. Call me a bagel snob (I'm from New York) but I'd only recommend this place if you're absolutely famished. Different water source is no longer a valid excuse for shit bagels. Science debunked that myth. They're either not chilling their dough long enough or not boiling the dough long enough. These were not fluffy at all. Quite difficult to chew. Not worth the $5 nor the effort it takes to get there. Adding 2 stars instead of 1 because at least they had onion bagels (something I tend to not find in the south). read more

Seasoning only on top and not the bottom and the bagel was hard. Maybe I had a one-off bad experience or something, but not in a rush to go back. Update to response from owner. You OBVIOUSLY have no idea who I was or in my group because only 4 of us were there at the time. The others hadn't left the house yet to meet us. We did not barge in front of anyone, let alone a college student. The woman who entered your store behind us worked at a neighboring store and was most likely in her 50s. I did not have a child in tow stomping and kicking, my daughter is 20 years old. From your previous responses to customers who didn't give you 5 stars, you obviously lack skills in customer service. You were rude and refused service for no reason other than you are a miserable human being. Again I will continue to tell every person I know and write on every site I can find to let them know how you respond to people that don't give your place 5 stars. Somewhere in St. Augustine is one of the only bagel places that popped up on my radar. A small little place just off of the main street, Schmagel's Bagels certainly has a customer flow and presence in St. Augustine. For a foggy damp early morning, customers marched in and out for bagels and coffee. The bagels were pretty good, and the lox was tasty. I felt the place was a bit overpriced for what is was worth. We ordered two lox/bagel and two coffees. Coming in at about $9 for a bagel with lox, I wanted to get the Yelp Deal value from the guy and I was refused. The deal was buy one bagel/cream cheese and two drinks and get a free bagel/cream cheese. I couldn't even get a free coffee out of the exhange. bottomline, I would have been better off buying one lox/bagel, a bagel/cream cheese, and two coffees and I would have seen more value for my money. I mean, come on.... a free coffee for two people who just bought one of the pricier items on your menu... anyway, enough rant. All in all, if you're in the area and want a bagel, like this Jew does so often, then Schmagel's is still a worthwhile place to go. read more

Having sometime to waste this morning I went out exploring. Up this street down that one till I saw Schmagel's Bagels. Now I have a sweet spot in my heart for a form of bagel known as a Bialy from NYC. Kossar's in the east village. So I walked in and it is a very small and kind of dark place. There are some tables inside and a fair amount outside as well. I looked at their menu and went with an everything bagel toasted of course. Then looked at the vast amount of different cream cheeses. I went for the cheddar and garlic smear on mine. I will say that it was quite tasty and the bagel was toasted perfectly. You know when you have that crunch but it is still soft on the inside and also tender. I sat outside for it was a beautiful morning. So I enjoyed my bagel as the wind blew and acorn accosted those who sat farther outside under the trees. Seen it been there got the shirt and not a headache. So I'm glad this place is close to my new project cause I am usually the first on the job in the mornings. read more

My friends and I went to Schmagel's for breakfast on a recent trip to St. Augustine. It is a very cute place. As a transplanted New Yorker, I have to admit that i am a bit of a bagel snob. A good bagel does not require toasting and is a little chewy and browned on the outside and moist and dense on the inside. Best when it is still a bit warm. The bagels here just don't hold up in my opinion. They are not boiled bagels. The sesame bagels have WAY too many sesame seeds on them and the seeds are not toasted. I found the veggie cream cheese to be too salty. The Floridian part of me is a bit of an orange juice snob. I was told the orange juice was fresh-squeezed, but instead I found something more like tropicana in my styrofoam cup. That is another area in need of improvement. Two of my friends had bagel sandwiches and I was impressed that they cooked real eggs fresh to order. Staff was friendly and helpful. read more

This is one of the places where locals eat, so you know it's good. CONS: - The music doesn't fit. They were playing Lite 96.1 WEJZ Jacksonville, which is a 80s, 90s, and today (A.K.A. Adult Contemporary) station. The country songs fit the place perfectly, so they should switch to a country station. However, Oasis by Wonderwall fit OK and it seemed natural that the cashier was whistling to Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran, because the place was built in 1989. - Not a lot of bagel and cream cheese options. The menu is mostly bagel sandwiches and paninis. They do use Boar's Head meat and cheeses though. - There are fake carnations at the booths. I think they look horrifically tacky and completely conflict with the overall look. PROS: - All the paintings on the walls are of St. Augustine. That really adds to the small town and small bagel joint/diner feel. - There are a few cream cheese flavors on the menu, but there is a new additional flavor every month, so you never get bored of eating 'just' a bagel. - They deliver by motorcycle. How badass is that? - There are flavored syrups for the coffee and soda. They have French vanilla, Irish cream, hazelnut, and coconut. - They have sriracha sauce at the tables instead of ketchup, mustard, etc. Hot sauce at tables is typical in the South, so, even though I don't use hot sauce, I thought the sriracha added to the overall ambiance. - Free Wi-Fi that you can use at the two-person booths inside or the wrought iron bistro tables outside. WHAT I'VE TRIED THERE: Blueberry bagel, plain bagel, strawberry cream cheese, almond honey cream cheese, and Jamaican Me Crazy coffee (caramel-vanilla flavored coffee). I'm from New Jersey so I know good bagels, and I give Schmagel's props, especially for the cream cheese, which you get a lot of. I also drink a lot of coffee, and always appreciate unique blends. Jamaican Me Crazy is strong and has different kinds of flavors as you're drinking it, good stuff. read more

I'm not sure how this place could have anything less than 5 stars. These bagels are insane!! So fresh and delicious. Spent the weekend in St.Augustine and went here for breakfast 2/3 days, and that's only because we assumed they were closed on July 4th. I am dying to go back to St.Augustine just for another breakfast sandwich. I did have a wrap the first time and it was SO good but I just cannot pass up the cheddar jalapeño bagel with that cheddar garlic cream cheese it is out of this world! The top of the bagel is loaded with cheddar and the cream cheese is perfection. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and we got our food pretty quick! I cannot wait to visit again! read more
