This place is your classic, no-frills, nothing pretentious, great deli. This place is like the OG of delis. Great sandwiches, good prices, great sides, nice people, charmingly dingy atmosphere. Love, love, love it. Best sandwiches in GR, better than the trendier downtown places. Nothing gluten free, but that's to be expected and can't be held against them. It is clear why Schnitz's Deli has been in business for decades - the food is awesome! The old school deli is small, but it delivers some huge flavors. It is located about 10 minutes outside of downtown Grand Rapids in a small neighborhood. There is plenty of street parking and the line was only a few people deep when I came at lunch time. The staff was very friendly and got my food out in less than 5 minutes. The large menu of deli classics and creative sandwiches ensures something for everyone. I went with the Big John sandwich and truly enjoyed every bite. The bun was the standout - so soft and pillowy. The pile of meat was cooked perfectly and the bacon added a nice crunch. The lettuce and tomatoes lightened it up a bit to round out a great sandwich! I had the broccoli salad as a side and consider it the best I have ever had. The seeds in it gave it an awesome texture. The food group I belong to decided for our monthly get together to try Schnitz Deli. Several of us had never been so we were very excited to go. It was a slice of heaven. As many have said not much to look at but the food was amazing. I personally had one of their Reuben's. The sandwich was huge and came with the most delectable pickles. The meat was grilled to perfection and the bread was amazing. Some of us also decided to have a cup of soup. There were 5 to pick from. I personally tried the Cream of Mushroom and it was to die for. Other sandwiches chosen by the group were Pastrami, the Big John, the California Reuben and the Chicken Salad. Everyone agreed we made the right choice in coming and will definitely be going back. This is the closest thing you can find to a great Jewish deli in the GR area. I love their sandwiches, and the sides and desserts are also wonderful. It gets very busy over lunch where you stand in line to order at the counter. But if you can wait for a later lunch, the wait is minimal. I ordered the turkey ruben and it was delectable. This place is a legacy around Grand Rapids and for good reason. It's been alive for years and has a very Mom and Pop vibe to it. The meats are of good quality and they have so many options. My partner and I stopped by on a day we took off of work. I love that the deli is attached to a cafe, because I went and ordered a coffee drink while I waited for my sandwich. It was busy and there was a line, but wait on sandwiches was no more than 5 minutes. They have all your standard sandwiches and if you love Deli's you wont be disappointed. I drive up and down Fulton Street all day long and with each trip I have been wanting to sample "a bit of Schnitz." Here are three reason why I am glad I did and why I think you should too. 1. The homemade sandwiches and salads are excellent and yet not excessively expensive. For less then ten bucks I got a made-to-order hot pastrami on pumpernickel sandwich, red potato salad, drink, and the all important dill pickle. 2. It's not posted on the menu board but prompt and excellent service is available. Keep in mind that it was lunch time on a Friday. The place was jammed and yet everyone was convivial. I believe this is a direct result of the staff who kept things humming with their good humor. 3. At first glance Schnitz appears to have only on street parking. Yet look behind the building and you will find ample room to leave you vehicle. Ask any Grand Rapidian and they will tell you that any place in the metro area that offers free parking deserves an honorary "Michelin star." What a nice surprise this deli was. We stopped by for sandwiches after noon. My girl had a #23 "Mary's Dilemma" (smoked turkey breast, Dutch Edam cheese, lettuce, tomato, & mayo on rye) while I had a #4 "California Reuben" (smoked turkey breast, Swiss cheese, cole slaw, & 1,000 Island dressing on rye). She repeated the order back to me without having to ask, which is something I really appreciate. My first time ever walking into Schnitz after some strolling through the farmers market on Saturday. I never had an urge to walk in because I never thought I could eat anything there, due to them being the master of the sandwich but not hearing about any gluten free options. Much to my surprise, after my boyfriend ordered his sandwich I saw in the corner of the specials board that said gluten free wraps available - score. I was happy to see that although they were busy, the moved the line along quickly and our order (to go) didn't take too long either. As we waited the few minutes I saw tables turn over pretty quickly, which is good for those that don't like to wait, even during high traffic times. This is the best lunch in Grand Rapids. You could order eight different sandwiches and think each is the best of its kind in the region. Best potato salad. Best baked beans. This has been my sandwich shop for about 20 years it is under new ownership now still is a great sandwich shop! However my last 2 orders have now been messed up I have to suggest and stress to the new owner and management to tell there people on the phone to listen to what the customer wants and if they don't understand make sure to ask the customer to repeat so they get it right. I drive from south Wyoming all the way downtown to have my schnitz fix it's frustrating when get home and it's not what I'm used to! Yum!! We won a gift card here (thanks Yelp!), so we stopped by to try some sandwiches around 2:30pm on a Wednesday. There was no wait, but realizing that they close at 3pm, we got our sandwiches to go. At $8.75 for a whole sandwich, I was worried about the portion size, but was not disappointed. The meat was flavorfull, and the grilled onions added a contrasting sweetness to the sandwich. My husband ordered the #3 Brooklyn Reuben: pastrami on pumpernickel with swiss, 1000 island, and sauerkraut....also delish!! He especially liked the sandwich because it wasn't dry! Everyone there was very friendly. They greeted us when we walked in and thanked us for coming when we left. I will definitely go back to try out a different sandwich and maybe some soup or a side item. My favorite sandwich joint, and very close to my house. With daily soup and sandwich specials, about 20 named sandwiches, and build your own options, you can always get something different. The veggie burger is a great option too. Most sandwiches are heavy on the meat. A 'half' is just less meat, not an actual half sandwich. I'm a medium-sized 30-something dude with a healthy appetite, and a 'half' is all I can handle. They also have a soda fountain, home-made deli salads, brownies and cookies. And catering too. It gets really busy from like 1130 to 1, some come early or late to beat the lunch rush. Room for improvement: styrofoam replacement (brown paper biodegradable ones), or maybe fancier topping options (spinach, cheeses, etc). Very friendly and welcoming staff. read more
