What a great deli! I have eaten here numerous times and always leave happy. I keep forgetting to get a photo of my sandwich, mainly because I usually attack and disappear it before I can think of anything else. The sandwiches are big, fresh and tasty. They have a large selection and you can feel free to modify them as you prefer. The toppings are great and the meat is both flavorful and plentiful - no skimping here. I sometimes get two sandwiches (one for me, one for my tapeworm), but I can usually be satisfied with one - which is saying something. The desserts are pretty good as well and I haven't gone wrong with one yet. Service is always friendly and prompt. Really, not much to dislike about this place except for the lack of parking, but with the overall quality, I don't mind much. read more

A coworker has been trying to talk me in to going here for a while. I was always a little scared because I thought it was somehow related to the Schnitzelbank (sp?) that closed down a while ago. This was excellent. I'm a first timer here so I asked for suggestions. I picked out the Black Russian which happened to be the owner's favorite or so he said. It was awesome!!! The other recommended option was the California Rueben was excellent too. Honestly don't know which sandwich is better? Just would depend on the mood you're in at the time and what you have a taste for. Also got bowl of chicken noodle soup and bowl of cream of mushroom. Which should be called mushroom soup with cream. This mushroom soup should be what all cream of mushroom soups should try to be. I've never had this many mushrooms in the soup even when I try to pick them out myself when serving my own bowl. Way too many times you get a cream soup with little crumbs of what once was a mushroom. This was definitely not the case arguably best mushroom soup ever. I'm assuming the chicken noodle soup was good cause my nephew inhaled all of it and refused to share or even let me try it. The homemade red potato salad was recommended by the owner also lady in line told me it's the best she ever had so I had to try it and I completely agree. It was awesome. One of the best I have ever had. Next time I'm back in Grand Rapids area I will make a point to stop back for sure. This place is top notch. I used to live near Schnitz Deli and it was my go-to spot to take out-of-town friends for lunch. I always get a half sandwich and cup of soup. The food is tasty but when I order at the front counter I get the feeling that I'm in the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. My indecisiveness was met with attitude. There was plenty of snow to deal with but after grabbing my bike from the shop next door, I ventured in to Schnitz's for my first visit. It was lunch time and the deli was pretty full. Good thing I ordered my sandwich to go. There were quite a few items on the menu that looked tempting. I decided to go with the Chicago Reuben. (smoked turkey, smoked ham, swiss cheese, cole slaw, 1000 island dress, rye). First thing I noticed was the smoked meat. Very nice taste for both the turkey and ham. The rye bread seemed to be very high quality, as well. The coleslaw added a nice "crunch" to the sandwich. I would prefer slightly less mayo and more of a spicy, crunchy coleslaw. I had the pastrami and Swiss on rye with mustard. The meat was delicious, nicely marbled with fat but not too fatty. It was warm and juicy. They slice it paper thin and pile it high. The pastrami is very flavorful. A great brined saltiness and a smoky overtone. The rye was fresh and soft. The counter people were very friendly. Service was quick. They use to have a place in Kentwood on Breton and 44th. Sad they they closed it because it was closer. Very consistently good food. Great soup, salads, sandwiches and desserts! Love the vibe. I finally made it here after MONTHS of having this bookmarked! I avoided coming with my family because we have a mix of vegetarian and meat eaters. I made an assumption that since it was a deli there might not be much to choose from on the vegetarian side. That said, I was wrong!! I could come here with my whole family and everyone could find something great! I really enjoyed this lunch, it was very very good. They hit the tuna melt out of the park! There was a hint of sweetness to it, that was pleasant. The grilled cheese and tomato basil soup was a huge hit with my 7 year old! She doesn't eat anything and she's verging on finishing off this fairly huge sandwich and cup of soup. She's also polished off half of a piece of Texas sheet cake! On that note, the Texas sheet cake was also a home run! Takes me back to my childhood. The portions on deserts are insane! Take a sharing partner if you can. I will certainly be back. read more

I seriously paused between eating my broccoli salad and eating my sandwich to write this review - that's how good this broccoli salad was. I'm not kidding. It's incredible. I may stop by to pick up a big container to take home to Chicago... I travel to Grand Rapids a couple times a year and my colleagues always order sandwiches from Schnitz. Let me preface this by saying I'm a deli snob; I've had the best MI (Mudgies in Detroit, Star Deli in Southfield) has to offer as well as nationally renowned establishments (Katz's deli NYC, etc). Schnitz is BY FAR my favorite deli. If this was near my office on the east side of the state I'd probably eat here 3-4x a week (hint hint, Schnitz management). Although I've tried all their sandwiches in the brief 3 month stint I was working in GR, my favorite has bot to be the club with spicy mustard and ham added (only comes with turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo by default). The bread may be the best part, baked fresh daily next door and grilled to a golden crisp. The mushroom soup is also pretty bomb. Actually, all the soups are great! Prices are also reasonable at about $8 for a sandwich. Note: Closes early (2 or 3 pm). read more

Is this where the term "Bland Rapids" was invented? I had the rancher sandwich and cheddar potato soup. My sandwich had horseradish on it but the bite was more minnow than shark. The roast beef was tasteless and included gristle I didn't order. The soup had a little more going for it but seemed to have a lot of chicken base in it. Hands down the best deli in GR! Servings are large, even for the "half" sandwiches, so come hungry! Busy at lunchtime but the line moves quickly.
