If you love authentic German food, you have to try Schnitzel Platz! The menu is large; the highlight being the various types of schnitzel (14 different types!) In addition to schnitzel, the menu also has other german-food fare ranging from Ćevapčići or sauerkraut to your basic strip steak or pork loin. I personally recommend the Hawaii Schnitzel and Cordon Bleu Schnitzel with a side of potato pancakes with apple sauce and spätzle. If you are looking for a healthier twist, you can order any of the schnitzel without breading. Conversely, if you have a huge appetite, I recommend you order the "Prince Leopold Platter for Two". I plan on trying the famous suckling pig in the future; but note that you have to request it one week ahead of time. "Schnitzel Platz ist ganz Wunderbar! Das stimmt, jah?" Translation: SP is one of the best German restaurants in the Chicago metro area, and has been for decades. Chef Wolfgang knows what he's doing, which is good, because he's been doing it for a while now. Dude is OLD. Gets crazy (read: fun as hell) during Oktoberfest, which in true Bavarian fashion is in the month of September, not October. Bob and Hank are the 2-man band that have been there every single time I've visited and are supremely entertaining. Order a 1-liter stein of Weißbier, or if you're not driving home, get DAS BOOT (a magnificent 2-liter glass boot filled with your choice of brew). Food selection is varied and almost always delicious. The meat & cheese platter is served on a section of a tree trunk! Potato pancakes are excellent. Nearly a dozen cakes to pick from for dessert, if you have room, which you likely won't......so get an Apfelstrudel to take home! You'll be glad you did. Oh, and the schnitzel? Best I've had outside of Austria (yes, I've actually been, and Schnitzel Platz's really IS that good). We have eaten here many times in the past and loved it but had not been back since it was sold. Ate here last Thursday for Oktoberfest and the food was nothing like it used to be. No more bread basket, you have to ask for water, my husband ordered weiner schnitzel and it was not homemade. It looked nothing like real weiner schnitzel, more like a frozen patty that was put in the oven. My sauerbraten was tender but the spaetzle also looked like it came from a package, the red cabbage was mushy and had almost no flavor. Our friends who are German were also extremely disappointed. I went with a group of seven so we shared a lot of the plates and nothing left me disappointed. I had the Sauerbraten and it was great. We used to be frequent customers before Chef Wolfgang sold it. We had a reservation under the new owners and it took them 45 minutes to assign us a server! We were there for 3 hours and when we finally got our food; My home fries were cold and my saurkraut had turned; Not to mention the schnitzel was eerily similar to that sold at Costco. We waited an hour and a half for them to refill our water; the guy spilled ice all over and the pitcher wasn't even half full! A great place for German food. This is not a slick, corporate-owned "Olive Garden" version of a German restaurant. It is a local place, quirky, and wonderful. A beerhall feel with lots of cool decorations, vinyl tablecloths, and cloth napkins. A bit of Munich in the Chicago Burbs. It's run by real people who obviously love their restaurant and their patrons. With over a dozen meals purchased, I can say Schnitzel Platz always rises to the occasion. Highlights - Good beer (not a uber-large selection, so the draft beer is always fresh), good food (it's German, so expect your vegetables to be cooked, the meats to be rich, and the sausages plentiful), and friendly service (the service pleasant, but not crisp - that is the charm of a local place.) Maybe a lowlight - Like all local places, some things can become too routine, and the owners need to step back with a fresh eye. Check out the restrooms as an example; everyone knows they need a face-lift. It does not detract from the experience, but keeping things fresh is always a challenge. The prices are reasonable for German food, and the portions are generous. The kitchen produces it's take on German food (I can't say authentic as I am not German), and it is hearty, flavorful, and rich. Thumbs up. I've enjoyed Prince Leopold Platter For Two and was blow away. I most recently enjoyed the Deutsche Haus Platte and thought it was very good. Then the desserts! Save room. Not sure if it's like that year round, but definitely is during Oktoberfest. Not mine or my bf's favorite but we weren't going to leave because of it. We had a really fun time. There was live music, everyone was in good spirits, eating good food! That being said, it's not a cheap meal or date night option for what we got. We ordered 2 potato pancakes to start, a beer each, and a full entree each. We enjoyed everything we ordered. Before tip it was $82, a little steep in my opinion. But it is supposed to be an experience, so you can be the judge if that's worth it to you. read more

A server arrived to take our drink orders, and we told him that we were ready to order our food as well. More than an hour later, someone breezed by to say that they were "backed up in the kitchen." The place was busy and chaotic (and unpleasantly loud, with an earnest, but over-zealous entertainer trying to exact music from every inanimate object in the place). You'll have more an hour and a half wait to have a chance of getting any food, is that OK?"), not after sitting in noise hell forever. Not recommended. At all. The food was just okay. I agree with one previous review which stated that the schnitzel was perfectly round like they were frozen patties. They also lacked a crispy outside. The spatzel was very uniform and appeared as though it came from a box. At the end of the meal the waitress asked if we wanted dessert and we declined. Not 5 minutes had passed after paying the bill when the waitress came to our table and stated that the hostess wanted to know if we could "wrap it up" because other people were waiting to be seated. Our first visit was not a good one. We had heard great things and were excited to experience German cuisine for my daughter who is taking German at school. I called to make a reservation and was informed they would be closed for a few weeks to make renovations. We went today to find out their are new owners. It sure didn't feel like any renovation had occurred. The air conditioning wasn't working, they were understaffed and the prices we felt were very high for mediocre food. I went there last Saturday. Had reservations and it took an hour from when order was placed until food received. The rouladen is supposed to be a rolled up of beef with onions, bacon and in some cases pickle inside. I know as my Mom makes them. There were barely 3 pieces of small flat beef buried under gravy, giant pickle spear on top , shaved carrots and onions. Really skimpy on the meat hidden underneath. Very disappointed. By chance, my party of three big eaters accidentally came July 16th for the grand indoor re-opening. Went to Schnitzel Platz to celebrate Father's Day with the " Kaiser" !!! We had a reservation but we're delayed. They were completely understanding and were extremely accommodating. The Beer was Cold the Food was Hot. We had 6 in our party which is the minimum count needed to order an Kaiser in the neighborhood a family style meal with the the usual sides of German potato salad , sauerkraut, red cabbage and pretzel rolls ..... followed by this massive platter of meat consisting of Schnitzel, sauerbraten, pork chops, assorted sausages.
