Beer menu (one side, that has German options). Jun 2025
    Alex D.

Disclaimer. If you are looking for authentic German experience, this IS NOT it. And after Hofbrauhause Rosemont (by O'Hare) closed its doors I don't know what to recommend but the city and the surrounding GOTTA have something.. as Illinois and the north western suburbs of the windy city specifically have significant influence by the German immigrants of all kinds originally settled in Wisconsin. Their food menu is basic American and has items like burgers, chicken wings, fried fish with fries, BLT sandwhiches, etc and THE ONLY German food option was.. the bratwurst hot dog. The sausage was fine, served with piping hot home made fries that I liked a lot, and a small cup of hot sauerkraut that was very good too. The beer menu was much better in that respect and offered a handful of German options, a few very exotic ones but majority of it was all American. I had the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB) Original and enjoyed every drop of it. Totally recommend. Tuesday at 1AM, surprisingly the crowd started to pick up the number of people and it was getting LOUD. I did not expect that. There were 3 tables inside but most people were hanging by the bar. I checked with the bartender if it was ok to grab the table and he didn't mind and even brought my food to the table, even though he then politely mentioned that ordering is at the bar. The tavern is a very local hangout.

    Dab!

I'm giving Old Munich Tavern 5 stars because they have an excellent German beer selection and this is where my husband and I had our first date. If you like good German beer, Old Munich Tavern is the place to be. Dab is on tap and the best!

Good food at a fair price. The wings were excellent, with the had the perfect amount of crunch. The side salad was full of fresh vegetables and the beer selection was good.

The cod was tasty and came with mixed veggies, coleslaw and a choice of fries, tater tots or red potatoes. I chose the potatoes and really enjoyed them. We arrived at 4:30 and snagged the last table in the very small dining area. The bar was pretty full, too. As we ate, a line began to form at the door for people waiting for tables. We probably would have stayed longer and eaten a little more fish if not for the number of people standing basically right behind us waiting to eat. All-you-can-eat is a great offer, but with only a handful of tables inside, it's probably not the best business strategy. And honestly, the plate had a good amount of food on it, so we didn't *need* more anyway. Kilcoyne's is tiny and has a better menu than I'd expect for what seems like a dive bar. I'd try the fish fry again, or maybe something else from the menu. However, I would not be willing to stand in the crowded doorway waiting for a table.

I just ordered one platter and my boyfriend who hardly eats kept eating off my plate, but they're still plenty for two people with only one portion. I have to come back when I'm off on Fridays. It's really good neighborhood local bar if you like fried perch come here on Friday.

Established (as the wall told me) in 1936, I expected "Polish" to be in menu alone...and I was wrong. The gal behind the bar had an accent. Halfway through the Bears game, I started hearing folks concerning and cheering in Polish. I felt like I had slipped into a cool little club to which I would never have otherwise been invited. Loud (but not too loud) and boisterous. I read some other reviews talking about rude regulars: rubbish. Chicago is loud and direct. If you don't like that vibe, the shoulders in this city may just be a little too broad for you. The pierogi and the pyzy were great, both served with sour cream. The beers, while not draft, had a wide, Euro-leaning selection but still respected some local favorites (Old Style). Good food. Good folks. Confusingly brilliant ambiance. You're missing out if you skip The Log Cabin.

It was perfectly flaky with a thin, crispy batter, adding just a little salt and pepper makes it perfect. We also tried the traditional Irish breakfast. Everything on the plate was very good. The boxty (fried potatoes) was a little oily for my personal taste, but the flavor was still very good. What really impressed us, was the service. It was truly exceptional. The sausage was very tasty, the breading on the outside was incredibly crisp, light, and the egg inside was cooked well. Both the steak pie and the chicken pie were very good. The chicken pie I think really needed the chutney that you can get separately. But that made it so much better and made it my preferred pie. The steak and ale pie was better than the chicken pie as a standalone, but needed a bit more gravy I think to elevate it. Sticky toffee pudding again was delicious. The chicken balti actually reminded me of the Taiwanese curry pastries (咖喱角) I grew up eating, which was a fun surprise. Very flavorful, and although the pies look kind of small at first glance, they are surprisingly filling. We also ordered the pickled egg -- basically a hard boiled egg with vinegar flavor. Tasty, though probably the most "normal" item we had. One unexpected highlight was the staff. Apparently many of the servers are freelance musicians, and they'll break out a guitar and ukulele song if someone is celebrating a special occasion. Very chill, friendly neighborhood vibe overall.
