Old Munich Tavern is a solid go-to for late-night food. The menu is mostly pub food and sandwiches, but it's a step above average bar fare. Everything we tried was good, satisfying, and exactly what you want late at night. The turkey club stood out--real turkey, not processed deli meat, which feels surprisingly rare these days. Overall, we liked the food and would especially recommend ordering takeout if you're craving dependable, higher-quality pub food after hours. Unfortunately, not having been in person, there is not much that we can say about the ambiance or staff, though they do accommodate substitutions on takeout, which is an indicator of good service. read more

Disclaimer. If you are looking for authentic German experience, this IS NOT it. And after Hofbrauhause Rosemont (by O'Hare) closed its doors I don't know what to recommend but the city and the surrounding GOTTA have something.. as Illinois and the north western suburbs of the windy city specifically have significant influence by the German immigrants of all kinds originally settled in Wisconsin. Their food menu is basic American and has items like burgers, chicken wings, fried fish with fries, BLT sandwhiches, etc and THE ONLY German food option was.. the bratwurst hot dog. The sausage was fine, served with piping hot home made fries that I liked a lot, and a small cup of hot sauerkraut that was very good too. The beer menu was much better in that respect and offered a handful of German options, a few very exotic ones but majority of it was all American. I had the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB) Original and enjoyed every drop of it. Totally recommend. Tuesday at 1AM, surprisingly the crowd started to pick up the number of people and it was getting LOUD. I did not expect that. There were 3 tables inside but most people were hanging by the bar. I checked with the bartender if it was ok to grab the table and he didn't mind and even brought my food to the table, even though he then politely mentioned that ordering is at the bar. Context is key here. Is it a fixture of Lake County from decades ago. I'm going to write this based on what it is which is a relic dive bar/unique establishment. Service is friendly if not sparse. Prices are reasonable. Food is great. They have a fantastic selection of what I think are to be the best beers. The atmosphere is friendly and serviceable. There is no pretentiousness here.. Definitely worth a visit with a few friends and stay for a few beers and try the food. Not a place to dress up and go to, but don't miss this place. read more

Nikki behind the bar is great! Very friendly. Lots of TVs to watch sports on, lots of choices on the menu to munch on, lots of choices on tap to drink. Old school, but in a classy way, clean, spacious facility. I could see this being someone's regular watering hole. read more

Decent ambiance, though kind of dark. Good Bavarian pretzel. Bartender was nice and provided good knowledge of the different types of German beers available. Listening to others do karaoke was fun. However, this is not the type of bar where I'd expect to spend $8-9 on a draft beer or $12 on a cocktail. I also would have liked to have been asked if I wanted premium liquor instead of it being assumed and having a rather hefty tab at the end. There are lots of good bars elsewhere. read more

You looking for good service? A nice meal with a cold drink? Good! Its all yours, UNLESS YOUR A PERSON OF COLOR. Yup thats right, if you walk in as a person of color please expect looks, being ignored, and slow slow slooooow service. When me and my friends came in we had just that, a few looks from patrons and even the bartender herself. We waited and waited to even be noticed, we were hoping for a filling meal and a few drinks and we left with disappointment and a empty stomach. Thank you Old Munich Tavern! A friend and I stopped by for dinner hoping to get some good German food. I was extremely disappointed to find the only thing German was the beer and bratwurst. I At least expected a good German wine. We had the patty melt which was good, but on sour dough bread. The outside looks like a German beer garden, however inside was a typical gin mill. The wait staff was so-so, doubling as bartenders. Will we come back, I doubt it. read more

One of my husband's favorite bars. Touch tunes jukebox, gambling machines and outdoor patio. Food is great recently had whitefish sandwich and crispy fries. Sometimes the daytime drinkers get a little too loud. Service is fine not the worst not fine dining! read more

It doesn't look fancy inside, but the seating is comfortable, with options at the bar and tables, the drink selection is more than adequate, and the service is good. They were also touting a new, improved , menu. Not having prior experience, I can't comment on the improved part, but we did enjoy everything we ordered, and the portions were generous. I did ask for my burger to be cooked medium, and it came out well, but otherwise it was okay, and there were no other negative comments about our lunches from the rest of my group. This place does seem like a good spot for a quick, well prepared, and relatively inexpensive lunch, especially if you'd like a beer with it. read more

We discovered this place from a delivery app and wanted to check it out in person. The people were friendly, the food was tasty and the atmosphere was iconic bar and grill. Looked pretty nice on the website, so decided to visit early evening on a Thursday for a few beers and dinner. Bar service was good as was the beer, but ambiance left a little to be desired. The place is pretty dated, and on this particular evening, had several patrons seated at the bar that reeked of weed. (yes, it is legal in Illinois). Decided to eat elsewhere, so I cannot comment on the food. read more

Ordered dinner and paid $1.50 extra for ranch dressing and also for tarter sauce. Called to tell them we didn't receive either. The lady on the phone was made that I asked her to credit me back the $3.00. She said I needed to drive back. Very poor customer service. Typical bar. Food was ok at best. read more

Recently tried their food for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! The wings were to die for. A couple days later I decided to come back and try their burgers with fries and was blown away again. This is not bar food. Gourmet meals are served here. Stopped by 2 weekends back because we were in the area. It was early Saturday afternoon. Within 15 minutes, a customer decided to go behind the bar area, the manager/owner was yelling at him and he eventually backed off. We were watching some college football. The customer left after 15 minutes, came back, left again and the bartender was speaking to him about something. Within a half an hour of the incident, from across the bar, he began blaming me and pointing with threating eyes and gestures. He stopped, went outside, came back-in after awhile when his gestures and accusations towards us escalated. I never said anything to him, I have never been in a bar fight and no plans to start. We immediately left the place, hoping he would not follow us to the car. Guess we will not be going back there for a long while, if ever. read more

Dont go there if you are not white! I'm soo disappointed that there is such a place exists, especially in chicago area, where tolerates racist behavior! People there will not going to treat you right if u r a different race, they would take sides of the people who would ask if u r legally here in the States! I understand the owner replied to my review apologizing for the incident caused by others but when there was some yelling going on at least some of your employees could have come to reason the situation, we would've explained about what was going on! It was not the first time we've experienced this horrific attitude. A week ago this another guy who I assume works there called us F... chinese, by the way we are not chinese, we are american asians! When someone insults us that way it really hurts!!! Another customer apologized to us for him, so we let it go, second time from another person was really upsetting and hurtful! read more

Came here during the day with my kid and wife to watch a game. Service was not very friendly and the food was very mediocre -- my chicken sandwich was dry, the mozzarella sticks were awful (my kid thought so too), and even the lemonade was gross. read more

The best divey dive tavern on the North Shore. New owners have fixed it up a bit in the last couple of years, but it's still a cheap-beer-jukebox-local-joint type of place. Great place for a cold one (or two) and some tunes with some drunk guys and gals from who knows where. No frills beer joint. Just wish they hadn't removed the fooseball table. read more

Had heard good things, and my normal bar had some maintenance being done so I checked it out. At almost 30 years old, I hardly even get carded anymore, until I came here and literally got denied a drink as I showed my ID and several credit cards with my ID. Awfully sketchy bartender, maybe stop knowingly serving underage people until a bust...helps us of age have a much better experience. A lot better around. Check out Players or Rockys. read more

Can overall be a fun bar super cute inside. But 3 guys working 2 behind the bar and the other supposedly "security"... one of them seemed to be training and was very nice. The two couldn't have been more ignorant. First time there, with a few friends and the minute we walked in they questioned us. Played a song that said "get the f**k out" and then kept saying we had to go & they were closing and turned all the lights on. It was 2:30 in the AM and it said they closed at 4. Not one person in the bar. I felt extremely uncomfortable & just disappointed. read more

I'm soooooo happy that I have such a great bar so close to my house! We were excited when we heard the Munich was opening back up but we were thrilled when we actually saw how great it looks inside! We went on Friday and the first thing that caught our eye was that our favorite blonde bartender was back! She is still super fun and made our time there a blast. They have a great selection of beer and booze and honestly the prices are the best I've seen in the area. I love bars like this that you can put your money on the bar and not go broke doing some day drinking! They also have gaming machines too so I was happy to play for a bit and I actually won $100 yay me!! We will definitely be back! read more

Both were surprisingly delicious and well-prepared. As for the fish itself? Absolutely wonderful. It was perfectly flaky with a thin, crispy batter, adding just a little salt and pepper makes it perfect. We also tried the traditional Irish breakfast. Everything on the plate was very good. The boxty (fried potatoes) was a little oily for my personal taste, but the flavor was still very good. What really impressed us, was the service. It was truly exceptional. The vibe of the pub is incredibly friendly and peaceful, topped off with traditional pipe music playing in the background. I'll definitely be back again! Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic Irish atmosphere.

When they arrived at my table, they were covered in jalapeno peppers (some round slices and some whole peppers cut length-wise). I flagged down the staff member who brought them to me and mentioned that wasn't part of the menu description. He looks puzzled as to what I wanted him to do. Umm...remake them entirely. I can't eat that! The fixed order came out quickly and they were good. Maybe I'd come back, but likely not. It's a shame because the whole experience was average at best.

The chicken pie I think really needed the chutney that you can get separately. But that made it so much better and made it my preferred pie. The steak and ale pie was better than the chicken pie as a standalone, but needed a bit more gravy I think to elevate it. Sticky toffee pudding again was delicious. Surprisingly light, not overly dense so I was glad it came with the custard which was very flavorful. Overall, will definitely return!

Got there and learned that they had the upstairs closed (by the big TVs). They squeezed us into a much too-small table outside away from the small TVs. We asked several times for a bigger table but kept being told that someone had reserved that table. How? I wish we knew instead of waiting the hour for a bad table that won't fit our entrees. The hostess was so apologetic, but was clearly more interested in packing more people in at the tables than actually fit. I won't be recommending this place for watching matches again.
