We recently visited Schobel's while passing through on a whim. We both had the fried fish, fries and One had Mac n cheese& the other corn. The fish was horrible, we each had one bite- only. It tasted so fishy, I never understood that term before. The fries were good and the Mac n cheese but there was hair in the corn. One meal was compensated to make it right. Now this is where the magic happened....(drum roll please)... PIE we both had the coconut pie and it's what dreams are made of. If you enjoy home cooking, gigantic portions and terrific customer service, check out Schobel's in Columbus. Regardless of where you live, it's worth the drive. It's owned and operated by a local family. I typically order one of their German dishes (and take home half of it for a later meal) while my husband orders the pot roast or the chicken fried steak. On Sundays Schobel's offers a huge buffet with fried chicken, etc. Everything is delicious, very flavorful. My only advice is to go hungry and save room for pie! read more

Off night? Didn't want outsiders? Probably wasn't racism for us (like Miguel R inferred when his party got the same reception) because we are about as white they come. We were sat quickly at a table and thought the reason we weren't waited on was because there was only one waitress (there were about 10 other tables that were occupied) so we waited patiently. Then another waitress appeared, and another, and another, and another. One of the waitresses stopped by the table next to ours twice while completely avoiding even looking our way and ignoring me when I tried to get her attention. Everyone seemed to know everyone including the table that was sat - and served - after us. Very bizarre. And just like Miguel, Whataburger got our business instead. Very Disappointed. Came here with the family July 5 2021 before heading down to splash way water park. Bonnie or Donnie was out waitress older white lady. I'm thinking wow she's Rude or just in a bad mood today . She Was in a hurry to get out order, making faces like if she was frustrated. Looking around not paying attention. Not bringing what we asked for. I had to get up to get my own creamer. She seemed really polite and happy to other customers but not our table(my family). I just got food to-go, but everything was pretty good. I got the chicken salad, fried okra, and buttermilk pie. Chicken salad salad (it was on a green salad) was fresh and tasty (8/10), fried okra wasn't as crispy as it could be but it was tasty (7/10), buttermilk pie was some of the best I've ever had (9.5/10). A decade ago, I was not impressed and left a poor review... Two weeks ago, my friends took me there for lunch and I was surprised at how things had changed. We each had the lunch buffet. The lettuce was cold and crisp, and the rest of the salad bar selections were also good. I also had a slice of meatloaf, which was warm, and finished with a slice of lemon meringue pie for desert. I just got home from having their 'weekend breakfast buffet'. Scrambled eggs with shaved mild cheddar (you shave it yourself from a BIG block), bacon and sausage, and a pancake with warmed syrup. Drawbacks: Ice cold butter 'cups' were brought to the table and finally melted on the pancake, the eggs were warm enough to melt the cheese, but the bacon and sausages were barely warm. The eggs were in a 'hot tub' and only about inch deep, but the bacon and sausages were each in a 'hot tub' piled about 4" deep so the top layer was almost room temperature. The service was outstanding compared to my visit a decade ago and the ambiance was also good, lots of wood and windows all around for plenty of light. Both of the latest times, the restaurant was busy, but there wasn't any delays getting seated or getting service from the staff... and the price was good. read more

We stumbled in off the highway while making the trek from FL to CO in the driving rain. It was a great respite along the way. The atmosphere here is homey and the food outstanding. The chicken salad sandwich was loaded with tasty filling on thick bread. The fries were crispy and hot. Buttermilk pie wonderfully sweet and key lime pie as good as any in FL. I'm really shocked at the low reviews. This was one of the best meals I had in while on business in Texas. Our group had just finished playing a round of golf up the street and we were all ready for some comfort food. We started with an order of jumbo potato skins loaded with cheddar cheese, bacon, chives. We also ordered a salami/sausage and cheese platter that was off the hook! So good. I ordered Andy's Shrimp & Crawfish Etouffee ($9.95) - cajun style etouffee served over a bed of white rice. It was very, very good. And for the price -- it was a killer deal. It normally doesn't include salad bar, but seeing as though everyone in my group ordered a "family favorite" , they let me make a trip to the salad bar. The salad bar which was loaded with absolutely delicious things to eat -- super fresh, incredible selection. I'm a picky person and was really impressed. Put on your best set of Camos and stop in for breakfast before heading out to hunt some of the local critters. Do I hear banjos playing off in the distance.... First time here, we stopped in for breakfast on the way to Wiemar. They have a buffet but I opted to order off the menu. I had the breakfast called "The Usual". It came with 2 eggs, 4 strips of bacon, 2 biscuits and hash browns. They also bring a pitcher of local honey for the toast or biscuits. My daughter ordered the short stack of pancakes, nothing short about this stack. The pancakes were crazy thick, but tasted great. More than she could eat. I tried the sausage as well, they make it in house and its very good. It's not greasy at all and has a nice flavor. The portions here are huge and everything was delicious. Coffee was good as well. At first I thought that it was a buffet place, it has a nice salad bar. I ordered the fried chicken and it was delicious, I had a tortilla soup and a baked potato and they were great also. Service is great too. I was driving from San Antonio to Houston and the ambiance felt a little bit weird because it was full of white people, I later found out that this is a German restaurant, I'm Mexican and I felt a couple of stares from the guests, but the employees make me and my family felt great in there. read more

We just picked Schobel's because it was very busy and it looked like a lot of locals were eating there. We went in and were greeted by friendly hostesses who seated us promptly and our waitress appeared almost instantaneously. They offer a buffet as well as a really nice salad bar that we could see upon entering the restaurant. My daughter is a vegetarian so we wondered if this would be a challenging menu. It was not she had a number of options available to her. She chose the grilled cheese on Texas toast! Her friend Emily chose the chicken strips with fried okra. I had the Jager schnitzel with red cabbage plus squash casserole and a side salad from the salad bar. We were amazed when they served the food. Just look at the size of my schnitzel! I didn't take a picture of the chicken strips but the dish included for chicken strips which were really entire large chicken breasts. It was more than Emily could eat. She took the rest for a snack later on. All in all the food was excellent, well priced and the service was prompt and friendly. If you're looking for a sub par,tough and gritty meal with servers who have the attitude of an 11 year old girl. This joint is your spot! My family and I went here to enjoy a meal on the way to the hill country. It took roughly a half hour for an iced tea to make an appearance at our table and the service was as good as our democratic officials. Catfish was saltier than a summer beef frank at a little league baseball pavilion. The brisket was cut out of a leather handbag configured in the early 1800's. All vegetables were god awful. Not a drop of seasoning on any of the items. Broccoli cheese and rice? More like Broccoli Juice casserole. Stuff tasted like literal badger feces. With our final hope to maybe enjoy one aspect of this experience we ordered dessert. 2 slices of different cakes and a slice of pie. The strawberry cake was ehh the pie had the consistency of shmegma scraped off an overweight farmer out of Iowa. And the last slice of cake we couldn't even try it because of the presentation. It looked like a mound of camel dookie. To make it worse, the icing looked like an infant had vomited profusely all over the cake. In conclusion, the place is an all around Hell hole. Foods terrible, service is terrible and the parking situation was inappropriate. A group of Latino gentleman were shouting racial slurs at my wife and children on the way in. We had our 6th Thanksgiving lunch at Schobel's this year, and it was fantastic. The food is as good as any homemade dish we've ever had, and we love it. Jaeger Schnitzel is a beautifully pounded, breaded pork cutlet served smothered in jaeger (hunter) sauce- a mushrooms sautéed in bacon with onions reduction sauce too good to be a mere gravy. It is served with red cabbage that has a tad too much vinegar for my taste, one trip to the yummy soup and salad bar, and choice of one side. The schnitzel covers 3/4 of the plate and is crispy where not covered in the yummy sauce. I always ask for a box. It heats up really nicely. A traditional American buffet just off a busy highway....large selection of items and a nice assortment in the salad bar....three meat items available which can change day by day ...food was actually very good; busy dining place ....buffet closes at 2:30 ....staff was very attentive....two things that you don't usually find at a restaurant :1.) 6-7 private restrooms.....3 for men, 3 for women and one family one... 2.) hand sanitizer pump on each dining table...now this an establishment that really cares about its customers! nice touch!! well worth the visit.....stop in next time you are nearby; you won't be disappointed....oh, and a final note---just down the street is the world's smallest Walmart and HEB (haha..it really seems that way) and to add to this rarity, they are connected!!now that you don't see too often; at least I haven't read more

On our way from San Antonio to Houston we stopped at this place in their drive-through - been there before-- it used to be a good. ...they told us it would be 15 minutes, that was fine. We ordered from the regular menu but when we paid for it they overcharged us for several items ALSO we ended up waiting 30 minutes - and a small cup of chicken noodle soup was eight dollars, it was a Styrofoam cup of overcooked noodles with no vegetables a few pieces of celery & little to no chicken!! Very very disappointed -- this used to be a good place to go, they need to offer the correct menu prices for drive thru and let you know in advance how long the wait really will be. The place was not busy- they should not have taken so long to complete our order. Again, very disappointed that they could ruin an easy cup of chicken noodle soup... The small Lance packages of saltines were stale. The burger was cold... fries were tasteless. Chicken strips were ok but fries had NO FLAVOR!!! We should've gone back and gotten our money back. While on your way to Austin or San Antonio, stop and refuel at Schobel's in Colombus, TX. The parking is great with plenty of shade trees. While there is a large lunch buffet, I opted for the German plate instead. Based on the name, I'm guessing this is a family owned restaurant with German ancestry. The German plate is $10.50 and comes with a schnitzel, sauerkraut, one side and either a soup or salad. Today the soup was chicken & rice. The schnitzel was tender and the mustard has good bite. I like the peppery flavor in the soup, but best of all is the squash casserole. Despite being a little heavy on the salt, the way the kitchen blackened it is just perfect. From the picture, you might think it's burnt, but it's definitely not. Due to the portion size, I managed to take a box home with me for lunch the next day! read more

If you are driving between Houston and San Antonio, Schobel's is fine if you are looking for a waistline expanding buffet serving some of your Southern favorites. Your experience may change depending on what items are on the buffet for that date. Fried chicken was the star of the show on my visit, and there were some decent sides including a very rich butter laden mashed potatoes and a nice pasta salad. While the buffet line can be imposing, it appears to be the selection of choice for the local crowd. I tend to gravitate towards eating kolaches on the road between San Antonio and Houston, but if you want a more proper meal, then Schobel's might make more sense. read more

We drove all around Columbus looking for somewhere to eat and it seemed to be either this place or the Whataburger. They had what looked like an extensive buffet but we weren't hungry enough for two buffets, so we split a BLT. The sandwich came with fries but we didn't realize that and didn't say extra crisp so we got standard semi-soggy fries. The service was slow and the server wasn't very attentive. The parking lot was jammed and parking was difficult. It was OK and seemed popular but it may be because it's one of the few places you can eat in Columbus on Sunday. I love German.... no but for real though... I German food. We came upon Schobel's by mistake... My boyfriend and I were on the way to Austin, he had to pee and we both needed food. We went in and it was pretty dead being right before the dinner rush, we totally missed the buffet. I had the wiener schnitzel and it was great, good breading, huge portion sizing, but it would have been better if it were veal and not pork. It came with red cabbage that was a perfect compliment to the meat. My bf had the German plate with sauerkraut and squash casserole. The squash was amazing! I wish we would have gotten some to go. Over all, we acted like fools in this restaurant and I made him pose wielding the sausage for a picture, we only got a few weird looks.
