the location of this place was a little off putting just as you're turning into what feels like a residential driveway but it's a very neat place. it's very pretty on the outside. the only complaint i have is the spacing on the inside as it felt i was constantly worried about hitting someone passing by. the service was too tier and our server was pretty funny. made sure waters were always filled like even after a single sip. the fries were super good, so was the ranch, the pasta was nice. i should've got something different as i was slightly freaked by the shell and legs of the crab and it tasted more fried than anything else. read more

Good food with a cozy atmosphere in an old school house. We went for a birthday dinner for my daughter and had a great meal. The sparkling cosmo is a fun cocktail along with their signature mule. We enjoyed the fried calamari with sweet chili sauce that has a little kick and we also tried the duck wontons. Our meals included a broiled salmon dinner salad with a delicious lemon sauce, sliced almonds, Brussels sprouts, craisens, and feta. So good! We also tried the stuffed rigatoni and andouille sausage pasta . Both were very hearty and well prepared. We were disappointed to miss the bolognese special...we'll have to come back. This is a renovated schoolhouse off the beaten path that is worth the trip for anyone in the Syracuse area. Staff is routinely friendly and knowledgeable. We have experienced a good portion of the menu now and everything so far has been a first class food experience. For appetizers, the Duck Bacon Wontons and House made Kettle Chips crushed it. Oysters are fresh and well prepared. Where to start for main dishes...so many incredible options but our favorites are the Brie and Bacon Jam burger and Steak Frittes. The burger smashes you with a rich explosion of flavors that literally melts as you eat it. For pasta lovers, you cannot go wrong with any of the dishes. Came here for the first time for our 5th wedding anniversary and we were blown away by the atmosphere and food. The scampi (gluten free) was incredible, as was the lemon cake, shrimp appetizer, burger... drinks. What a lovely place for a special evening . We recently celebrated my wife's birthday at School and Vine and as always reservations were quick and easy. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly smile and sat at the bar awaiting the arrival of the rest of our party. Upon arrival we were seated and drink orders arrived. Comfortable and knowledgeable waitress was very attentive as we had our grands join us. Food was as good as ever and nice to see the duck bacon wontons still available. I will start this as I always do by saying that I don't give out five stars unless I am really blown away. This is one of the few times I give that five stars. I live this place. It's small but has a great feel. The staff is super friendly and they do a great job making sure we were taken care of. Had a manhattan which I hardly ever have because most of the time I am disappointed. This time I was not disappointed it was one of the best I have had in a long time. The apps were awesome the bacon and duck wontons were off the hook. I could have eaten 10 of them. The house made kettle chips were just perfect. I am going to try and make my own as they were that good. I ordered the Steak Frittes the garlic fries were money and the steak was medium rare as I asked for. I feel like that never happens. Most steaks are over cooked but not here. They nailed it. Everyone loved their food and would go back tomorrow if we could. The price is high but when it's worth it I don't mind paying. If you have never been please go for a nice date out. This place will impress. Don't be in a rush as this is a nice place that you don't need to be in a hurry. Love, love, love the atmosphere of this place, as it is nestled in a small little corner of a neighborhood. A small, rustic building surrounded by vines and trees - the environment is truly an escape, and is my favorite part about School & Vine. The food and drinks are just okay, (aside from the fries which were pretty good). I got a Bacon and Brie burger which was good, but if I am paying over $15 for a burger, I like for the flavors (i.e. the brie and bacon) to really shine, and for me they didnt - it kind of tasted like a regular burger. Everyone else at my table got burgers and they seemed to agree - just okay. I also got the blueberry lemonade martini which kind of fell in the same line - just alright. I do not think I would return unless I was truly looking for that "escape the area" vibe because you truly do not feel like you're anywhere near Syracuse when you are here. If that's what your are yearning for - definitely give this place a try , and maybe something other than burgers are their thing! read more

Small quaint restaurant though you would not think a restaurant would be located in a residential area but it would be great place for a date night. Atmosphere is intimate complete with candles and dimly lite dining room. Have heard that the outside area is beautiful in the spring and summer however, in upstate NY in November we settled for coming back next year to experience the outdoor space. The food was excellent and the service was great. The French Onion soup was to die for and was as good as the soup I spend hours making. Portion sizes were large. I am glad I ordered a side salad as that was enough for me though had I known how good the soup was I probably would have ordered two bowls and no salad. My dining partner ordered a Hamburger which looked amazing. Hamburger was flavored and cooked to order however burger was a little overcooked but flavor made up for it Would highly recommend this restaurant and we are looking forward to returning. This place is such a cute little date night spot. We ate inside but they do have a little back patio with fire pit that looked nice as well. We had never been here before so we wanted to try a lot. We got the kettle chips and shrimp for appetizers which were both amazing. I got the shrimp scampi with a Caesar salad and the shrimp were huge and it was amazing. My husband got the steak frites with garlic fries and they were the best fries I have ever eaten. The wine we got was a recommendation from our waitress and she was spot on. She was so sweet and very attentive. I think her name was Nicole but I am not 100% sure. If I had to say one bad thing I would say the tiramisu I got to bring home was not my favorite but I am super picky about my tiramisu so I am sure most people would consider it to be great. If you are sick of the same restaurants in Syracuse I highly recommend the drive to Janesville to try this hidden gem. read more

We heard so many good things about this place. I have to say making reservations was quick and easy. The building is what you expect, looks like a old small school house covered with vines. Walking through the front door we were met with a friendly greeting and a smile. We were about 10 minutes early, but was seated promptly. As expected the place is small, I didn't count but maybe around 20 tops and then seating at the big old bar, the place was LOUD, had to yell across the table to have conversation with my guest. It was also dark. (Why restaurants dim the lights to the point where you need a light to read the menu? I don't know) the waitress greeted us with a smile but soon turned sour, after asking her to either speak up, or repeat herself do to the noise volume. It wasn't a long wait between ordering and recieving the food, both of us ordered the salmon hers was the lemon glazed and mine was the blackened on angle hair pasta, both were tail cuts so they were thin. Both ordered it medium rare because by the end of the meal it would still be moist. Didn't come that way. My guests order came roasted brussel sprouts which looked like they were roasted to charcoal. The angel hair pasta was over cooked. As the night went on the waitress seemed more and more perturbed with us, that we were taking our time and trying to enjoy each other's company and a meal. Yes, I know changing tops is more money for her. Desert Ah! Desert usually the best part, creme brulee the creme seamed like it was instant pudding from a box and the brulee part was burnt to where it wasn't edible. So in conclusion if you want to spend $200 for two and leaving you could've done better at home. Stay home, wasn't worth it. read more

Excellent food and great outdoor setting. Inside tends to be a little noisy. I've been there a handful of times with no complaints. However, recently when I brought seven family members, we had a very disappointing experience. We waited over an hour for our entrées. After our second round of drinks, our server basically ignored us. They were probably as baffled as we were as to what was taking so long, and apparently had no answer for us. Everyone around us was served and a few were even leaving before our entrées ever arrived. Fortunately, the appetizers were delicious as well as the entrées. However, the desserts were very disappointing, especially the espresso martini. I would only give three stars for that experience alone. However, all my other experiences were 4+ or 5. read more

we always pass this restaurant while driving to the dog park, and finally decided to try it for dinner! beautiful vine covered building with lots of outdoor space. they were totally booked for outdoor seating, so we sat inside. service was great- informative and attentive waitstaff, constant water refills. Great drink list- lots of cocktails, wines, beers to choose from- reasonably priced. we got a glass of the pinot noir and the whisky sour. We started with the chicken dumplings which were lightly fried and very flavorful, as well as the wedge salad. For entrees, we ordered the steak salad and shrimp scampi. They were very accomodating for switching bleu cheese for feta on the salad and the steak was perfectly medium rare. The shrimp were jumbo and delicious with a very flavorful scampi sauce; the angelhair pasta was perhaps a little soft. Overall, a good meal. Definitely a nice option for casual dining away from the downtown scene. Call early to reserve a seat outdoors!! read more

My first visit after hearing may great things about the food, left my conflicted. I started with the Duck Bacon Wontons, which were excellent. For my diner I ordered the stuffed rigatoni alla vodka sauce with asiago, prosciutto & a dollop of ricotta. I asked the server if the asiago was melted or sprinkled on top of the finished dish. I was assured it would be melted. When I was served, it didn't appear to be a traditional vodka sauce, which I've had many times. It was a deep red in color as if it was lacking any cream or cheese. It tasted like a standard marinara sauce, but a bit more acidity. I was served with a nice piece of bread. As I ate the pasta dish I thought it wasn't very good so I took the bread & dipped it in the sauce, and decided the sauce was ruining the bread. While the price was more than reasonable, I would have preferred to pay more for better food. read more

I was surprised to see how nice it was in the inside (outside looks like a library). The table we sat at sopposidly was the owners parents kitchen table, very cool. We were pleasantly surprised at how conveniently located School and Vine is, just off 173 on Barker Hill. Only a few miles, either way for 481 or 81. We made the trek from Liverpool, and to us it was well worth it. The property is gorgeous (especially with snow and lights from the holidays). The staff are so friendly and take great care of you. Everything we tried was delicious. Oysters on the half shell served with cocktail sauce and vinegar & onions- so fresh and tender. Mushroom and Brie soup, creamy and full of flavor. I'm a sucker for good 'ole spaghetti and meatballs, and on special that night was a dish with stuffed chicken meatballs - even better the next day for lunch!
