Went on a Friday night had a reservation, was told that they are understaffed so the 40 minute wait tacked onto our reservation time seemed understandable. However this seems to be what they hang their hat on. We were charged for food and extra sides which we never received, actually we were told they are out because they had a large party next to us. In addition we were told they have no bakers and no way to make bread (on the menu that we paid for). They charged us anyways then they denied the situation after paying. Bottom line they are not out to take care or serve the locals, they're out for their pockets only. All for @$20. Arrive hungry. Leave full. This place has no frills! It's an old schoolhouse (hence the name), and retains its antique character. Come as you are! The Schoolhouse Restaurant has a country-vibe and a friendly staff, but the prices are that of an exclusive restaurant, to be specific, the cost for three people was over $100, which was only two actual meals, an appetizer, the upcharge $14 for vegetables, due to two people sharing an entree, and three soft drinks. The portion of Salad was too small for larger parties, doubling the size would be appropriate IMHO. Nothing wrong with the food, it was tasty and the entree portions were good, the extras made it far less appealing. Not sure where to start.....the Cole slaw and salad was horrible. My husband and I went there recently. It is a rustic, cute restaurant especially for a teacher like me. It has been a few years since we have eaten there but tonight the food was terrible. The vegetables (corn and green beans) tasted as if they came straight out of a can. The coleslaw tasted sour (rancid?) and the cornbread was very bland although the butter was good. The mashed potatoes and salad were just okay but the lettuce was drowned in dressing. Shrimp was coated with too much crunchy batter. The apple cobbler dough was not done and had too much cinnamon. I like just about anything but this was just awful! The best thing about the evening was the service! Food tasted like a school lunch... which would have been way cheaper! We always enjoy dinner here. Great place for family time when you don't want to cook. Everyone gets to pick their meat and then they bring out big bowls of several sides for everyone. This is one of my favorite restaurants! I love bringing new people to the school house. The dining room is the old class room equipped with a black board for the menu. You choose your entree and all sides are served family style on the lazy Susan at the center of your table... oh btw they are all refillable! You have to try this amazing little spot. We used to eat there years ago when we worked in nearby Milford. Thought it was pretty good back then. Can't say that now. I had the country fried steak. The meat and breading were marginally ok. The plate was served with about a tablespoon of brown gravy on one edge of the meat. Wife had the all white meat fried chicken. The breading was fried to a VERY dark brown and was almost too hard to eat. It also had a very 'old' oil taste that was very off-putting. The gravy for the mashed potatoes was served in a small (8oz?) gravy pitcher. When they brought it out, there was about 1 1/4" of gravy in the container (to cover a party of eleven people). The corn fritters, always a treat, were small and fried absolutely hard (along with the old oil taste). The bill, including tip, for three of us (out of the party of eleven) was $86. read more

Well, we heard about this quaint little place and were excited to try it! After some site seeing at Serpent mound with our three boys we headed back down the highway to the Schoolhouse Restaurant. It was Saturday and it was very crowded when we arrived at 5:00pm. We were told an hour wait (which was a bit of an issue due to tired, hungry kids). The staff was friendly which was nice. We decided to wait and were called in within about 30 minutes which was a relief! It seemed like a favorite local spot with lots of history. BUT THEN.... The downsides. It was SO loud in the dining room and the acoustics were so bad that nobody could hear each other talk. My youngest is sound sensitive and he was really struggling with the noise. We ordered drinks, which came right out, and some appetizers, which did not... One of the apps came out within about 30 min, my oldest son's hamburger finally came out but no other meals. He finished his burger, which he said was great, but none of our food was out yet! Crazy! Our second app, corn fritters, came out. Then the rest of the food was served. About an hour after we ordered. Yikes! The food was not amazing. Way too much sugar in the slaw, salad dressing, carrots and fritters. My youngest who is 9 and who was already stressed from the noise level, turned to me after a bite of the corn fritter, almost in tears and yelled (above the noise), "WHY IS EVERYTHING SO SWEET!??" :p We had been considering dessert before the meal started but by the end nobody even wanted to think about pie. Overpriced entrees (24$ for 4 pieces of VERY overcooked fried chicken, 20$ for meatloaf etc...) Too much sugar in the items listed.. The entrees were good besides the over cooked fried chicken. The wait times are LONG, plan to come not famished because it's going to be a while. The staff seemed a bit stressed but were friendly and trying their best. I think that the kitchen must be under staffed and disorganized? I gave it 3 stars because of the historical setting, the decent staff and the kids activities outside and the portions were big and there were leftovers. Also, the green beans where legit great! The Schoolhouse Restaurant is always a treat. It's in Camp Dennison, which seems further than it is from Green Township. But it's worth the drive. The restaurant is, as the name suggests, in an old schoolhouse. The menu is written on the full wall blackboard, visible from anywhere in the room. The servers are always friendly. The food is served family style. The side dishes are refilled anytime they are emptied (and you want more). My wife and I love the variety of entrees. The Schoolhouse Restaurant has enough choices that no one can say there's nothing they like. I have to admit I've never tried their desserts. The concept of this restaurant is so neat with the history of the Camp Dennison Schoolhouse. Location is very near the Bike Trail as well as near Indian Hill. The repair/upkeep of the restaurant and especially the taste of the food leave a lot to be desired. Honestly, I was glad I had not brought friends/family with me. The food portions were gigantic, but tasted very instant and packaged (instant mashed potatoes, mix for the cornbread, gravy that was blah, fried chicken skin that was just so so). I only had to order my fried chicken and drink; the rest of the food comes as the items of the day. Cost was $22 for my 1 meal. Lots of leftovers to bring home, but I left several items behind because they just weren't worth reheating. My server was very friendly. My wait from order to delivery was very long. Schoolhouse Restaurant is an adorable and inviting concept that hasn't tapped into its full potential. I am left wondering if Mr. Rooney is the Principal. First period: Strong start! A phone call was met with a very friendly voice who assured us there was no wait, and to come right in! He even cracked a funny joke about the impending white death (snow) forecasted for that evening. This man definitely had his Wheaties for breakfast! Great phone presence! Grade: A Second period History class: The restaurant is intriguing, and very inviting from the outside. The inside? Ehhhh... not so much. The building has been around since before 1900. The owner's parents converted it into a restaurant in 1962, for families to enjoy traditional, sit-down meals outside the home. Great idea... but, it has been met with common-core-math execution. This place needs some love and TLC. It looks as though the decor has also been around since 1900, and that it may have received its last, thorough cleaning in the 1970's. Dilapidated kitsch is everywhere. Nothing was very well-preserved or spruced up (how about some new paint?) and the tiny lobby has a sad, dingy feel; not the best for first impressions. Grade: C- Third period was a Physiology lesson: In the dining room, you'll find only large, round tables, each topped with a "lazy susan" for family-style eating (save for one, small, two-seat table, which couldn't possibly hold all the food). The menu is written in colored chalk on the huge blackboard in the back of the class (nice touch), with the scripted alphabet of yesteryear still acting as a border, bringing back fond pre-school memories. All quite adorable, but the chairs are exquisitely uncomfortable! So bad, in fact, I had to fold up a winter jacket as a seat cushion just to make it through my meal. My left leg still fell asleep, thereby failing Physiology. Grade: F Biology: Our table was dirty and so were some of the plates and utensils. Fortunately, there were six other place-settings on the table, so I was able to piece together a clean set of dinnerware and avoid inadvertent bacterial experiments. Grade: D- Out to Lunch: The waitress was nice, but she forgot to take our order until we reminded her she hadn't done so yet, long after we were done with appetizers. We enjoyed the banter, but the extra wait in those chairs was excruciating. Recess: Whilst waiting for our food, a cold draft came upon our table that incessantly blew 26°F air on us from outside. I had to adorn my husband's winter coat to avoid hypothermia, because I was sitting atop my own winter coat. Poor hubby froze to death, despite trying to close the offending door, only to have it reopened before he could even be reseated. Icicle status. Pop Quiz: I was most excited to try the fried chicken, which is raved about by other guests. I am saddened to say it was just okay; beautiful, crunchy golden crust, tender and juicy inside, but it came out only luke-warm (almost cold - probably from the door being left open to the outside, in the kitchen, as our waitress informed us), and was criminally under-seasoned. No flavor, except "fried." With extra salt and pepper, I give it a decent mark, but nothing to rave over. Grade: B My husband was talked into trying their chicken fried steak (and he's a connoisseur of sorts), which was a literal, massive miss-steak. He was displeased to find a giant, breaded burger on his plate, shaped like a steak, instead of actual chicken fried steak. He gave it a D- (he said the meat was good, it was just the wrong meat), but allowed extra credit for the mashed potatoes and gravy accompaniments. Grade (with extra credit): D+. Mashed potatoes and gravy were delicious! The potatoes were creamy and fluffy, the gravy was rich and savory - it reminded us of Loco Moco gravy in Hawaii. Grade: A- The corn fritters were the star of the night, with whipped butter and honey. Hot, crispy, golden, fluffy balls of fried wonderment. They should really be served as dessert - not an appetizer. They're basically a matrimony of a donut fritter and corn bread. I pledge allegiance... Grade: A+ If you're a big eater, this place is for you. Family-style dining meant a ton of food leftover for just the two of us. Had I known, I would have asked they not serve some of the dishes that came out; especially the watery coleslaw; sad, limp green beans; and over-dressed, sugary salad. Note: The class (family) seated next to us was raving about the lemon meringue pie, and it did look like a heavenly, lemony tower of dessert perfection! However, between the salad and the corn fritters, we had already consumed plenty of sugar for the night. Grade (by proxy): A Report Card: I wouldn't exactly send anyone to the Principal's office or detention as a result of our experience, but I walked out of this place so disappointed; I really, really wanted to love it!
