I love this place! I was in the area and this was nearby. It was like a cute little seafood diner with a bar top that had about 10-12 seats at it. The 'perfect seafood diner' per my husband. Not fussy high dining and not a greasy fish shack. Delicious toasted grouper (garlicky breadcrumbs and Parmesan topping), cucumber salad, potatoes au gratin, hush puppy. Fried shrimp, coconut shrimp and crinkle fries rounded out the meal for the fam. I just picked up 5 dinner for coworkers and for me; gave a $8.00 tip; imagine my surprise when I get back to work, and just about all the orders were incomplete; missing sauces, missing French fries; if you like your shrimp with tartar sauce...too bad, if you like cocktail sauce...too bad, you want French fries, well you are not going to get that...to add insult to injury I was told that they would take my name down that I was welcome to come and pick it up when I wanted to; I explained no one was going to go out of their way for tartar sauce and cocktail sauce, nor for that matter an order of French fries; this in unacceptable customer service; who are they to say that we should pay for something but have to enjoy less and not the way we like and then offer the ridiculous... read more

Have been there several times and the food is always very good. The last time we went they had Trigger fish which I'd never had. The waitress recommended I try it. It is amazing. It's very hard to find in a restaurant or live seafood place. Believe it or not we found it recently at the Daytona flea market. They actually have a seafood place that you can buy food cooked or frozen. We bought a couple of filets, took them home to cook and they were great. Thank you to Schooners for introducing this to me. We have been coming here with my family for many years. The service is great and the food is delicious.The fried shrimp are the best but if you don't like seafood the steaks are good. My husband loves the prime rib on fridays. The fried food isn't too heavily battered either which is super nice. We are local and often go out to decent restaurants that serve good food and are reasonable. Schooners has been around for a while, but the last few visits have been a nightmare. Their food is no longer seasoned and well below even dog food standards. The cocktail drinks are no longer made correctly, and the beer selection is poor. They are no longer what they once were; we are no more and just trying to feed the older folks. Got there by 5 pm not too busy but people were filing in by then. Sat at a nice booth in the bar area. Server was Jasmine very sweet and attentive. We ordered fried shrimp dinners and was surprised at the large portions. Cole slaw and dinner salad was cold and delicious. The fries shrimp and hush puppies all hot and crispy. Awesome sweet tea. Great local seafood place! We discovered Schooner's in 2014; loved it then, and it's just as wonderful today. This is just off the touristy path... has the ambiance of a dennys, but don't let that fool you... they have amazing fresh local seafood and more. They also make a uniquely local favorite: Minorcan Clam Chowder. This is a red, slightly spicy, clam and potato chowder... using minorcan datyl peppers. Don't pass this up! Speaking of Minorcan Datyl peppers... they sell hot sauce and vinegar sauce. We had the Minorcan spicy shrimp and fresh catch breaded and baked (it was Mahi, or dolphin as it's called here in Florida... not porpoise- which is why we seem to have adopted the California name for them). The sides were all good... the squash casserole was really good. We finished off with a peanut butter pie... lite and smooth. read more

A bunch of guys from our neighborhood went here for lunch one day and overall had a nice lunch. The server did a great job handling our large group which is not Leah's easy to do. The fresh seafood was delicious, I had a blackened fish, i believe it was grouper and it was very tasty. However the lunch portions of the fish were pretty small. They give you 2 sides and those are generous portions. The place fills up quick at lunch time. We got there a little before 11 when they open and there were already people waiting outside. Very popular place. The restaurant was clean and a little on the rustic side but very comfortable. I'd go back again! read more

What could improve? Food, service, ambience! Seafood house? The fish was overcooked. The sides were overcooked and bland. The bartender was sweet as pie to her octogenarian regulars and a real sarcastic pluperfect beeyotch to us. At first I thought she had a sense of humor and was playing but nope. Just nastiness. My friends had flown in on a really early flight to see their new home and were hungry and tired. They took a minute to decide whether to eat at the bar or wait the 20 minutes for a table. That evoked a comment or two. Very busy place filled with older regulars - and we are in our 60's. We asked about the catch of the day - there were 2. I asked what the fish sandwich was, she said fish doesn't change, just how it's cooked. But I'd heard her tell my friends something about the Mahi not available in a certain dish. Sitting at a noisy bar, my bad ear toward them, I didn't quite catch everything she said. My girlfriend and I asked about the geriatric sides as we ordered, made a change or two, then when her husband ordered, the bartender said wow, first one that got it right! We laughed - we really tried to keep it light but - wow. Very condescending all the way through. Four other groups at the bar who ordered after us got their food first. Hmmm. Apparently they have good onion rings but my Brussels sprouts were boiled grey and bland. The pickled beets were from a can. Typical 70's fish house like the one I worked at during high school, only nothing's changed. She started to list all her desserts, but I wanted the first item to take to my mom so I stopped her and said yes please, my mom would love that! She got mad at me for interrupting her script! I said I'd already heard her telling the ladies at the table behind us that she'd fix them one to go, and I thought my mom would enjoy that - plus she was so busy - she retorted thanks for the story. I felt like we were in kindergarten or maybe high school and she was the mean blond cheerleader. Came in Saturday 5/27 at 8pm. I did call ahead since the online hours said they closed at 9pm but I wanted to be sure and well sure enough they closed at 8:30pm. So always call ahead, a lot of these places around here do not have their hours updated. We were coming for the alligator and frog legs, they were ordered and they were good. I also ordered a kids fried shrimp with fries and boneless buffalo wings with a cabernet. Wings were sweet not spicy the sauce tasted like terriyaki with a hint of spice. The fries I was disappointed, they were like the frozen type, def not a fan. It would have been much better if they were freshly made. Our total was $76 it wasn't expensive, but the food definitely didn't meet quality standards for me. Inside reminded me of an outdoor eatery in New York. read more

We landed here for lunch when we couldn't get to our first pick thanks to road work- but we had decided on seafood- so John found this place while I was driving. The parking lot was backed up- there is more than one way into the lot and I simply went the front way and had to wait for various vehicles ahead of me to allow people to leave so they could grab the parking spot. Once inside- it smelled like good seafood, but was frosty cold! I didn't have a sweater- so when the hostess asked if we would like to sit on the patio, I said yes. It was starting to rain- but the patio was enclosed and covered. We were taken to a table that wasn't cleaned yet- so we stood off to the side as the hostess and another employee bussed the table. Now for the food. I ordered broiled shrimp, menu said broiled in butter, garlic and bread crumbs. Sides were corn on the cob and fries and one hush puppy. Shrimp- butterfly cut, probably no necessary and made the shrimp look tiny. But the fail was with the bread crumbs, I know what the were going for but the bread crumbs weren't crispy on top of the shrimp, instead fell into the juices and butter and made a soupy consistency that wasn't good. Either ditch the bread crumbs, or make sure it is executed correctly. The sides: fries were fine, hushpuppy good and the corn was freezer burned and bland. John ordered coconut shrimp with fries, corn on the cob and a hushpuppy. His shrimp were better than mine- they didn't have a lot of coconut flakes- but the flavor was there and delicious. He really loved the hushpuppies and even stole the last nibble of mine. John agreed with me about the corn on the cob. Even with butter, salt and pepper- it just wasn't good. Service was good- our server helped bump my rating up to 3 stars because I left unhappy with my lunch, but the service was great. I am chalking it up to ordering the wrong thing, but truthfully- there are tons of seafood places in the area and odds are I won't be back here. read more

We sat at the bar, the bartender was wonderful, very attentive and made sure we were ok. I ordered the broiled shrimp. It was disgusting! It was tough, no flavor of butter or garlic, the breadcrumbs were soggy and seemed to be sitting in water rather than butter. I have broiled shrimp many times, these were boiled. The corn wasn't yellow, it was almost gray looking and flavorless. Thank goodness for the baked potato! When I looked around the majority seemed to get fried food, so I guess you are out of luck if you don't get fried. We didn't let the bartender know because to be honest, couldn't wait to leave. This is the place that locals go nearly once a week for huge portions of seafood, sides and hushpuppies. They close at 8 pm but if you are still there you can continue to enjoy dinner. Wife ordered Country Fried Steak with mashed potatoes/gravy and green beans. I ordered broiled trio (fish, scallops, shrimp) with green salad, cole slaw, fries, and hush puppies. My trio was tasty and cooked well, fries crispy, cole slaw very good, hush puppies were ok. However, the country fried steak was anything but. Basically it was a hamburger steak...not country fried steak. We check with the waitress and she confirmed that it is there version of Country Fried Steak. Sorry, but I totally disagree. The hamburger steak was overdone, dry and not seasoned. Very unappetizing. Potatoes/gravy was ok, green beans were good. We've eaten here once before at the recommendation of someone else, and it was extremely busy (had a long wait), but the food was good enough to urge us to return. We ordered, D got an order of clam chowder and ... nope, the waitress came back with some other kind, she didn't know they were out. She said sorry and it's on the house. That's fair. Our food came - a fish trio for me, fried shrimp for D. My plate was cold, the food was cold. The waitress took it back to the kitchen to warm it up. D's was hot so he kept it. Went to Schooners yesterday for the Captains Platter. Asked them for lightly fried. Oysters I guess they were, were crunchy. Did not taste like oysters. Fish was dry and hard to eat. Clams were hard. Hush Puppies were hard. Had to cut them with a knife. Shrimp were dry. Scallops were good. So much for lightly fried. They have some really good food. Just don't know how to cook it. read more

After dining at 2 highly rated (over 4.5), we were a little skeptical about Schooners. However, after a half hour wait, we were extremely pleased with our Friday night experience! Very friendly and attentive staff complimented the great food choices we made. We loved the fresh made onion rings and the reasonable pricing compared to the usual overpriced resort area prices we encountered. We were a little skeptical again on an 8 oz NY strip, but were happy with the result along with generous sides. I had a surf and turf with scallops which were generous in size and portion as well and NOT overcooked like you usually get in many restaurants. My wife loved the hushpuppies and local charm of the place. It's great to find a place frequented by the local people and very glad we waited and dined there! We will definitely dine there again the next time in St Augustine. read more

Well! Another five star that has gone south fast. I was very surprised having dined here many times in the past and with family. Service? Very good am...but the cuisine lacking a lot. Was a Saturday so full chef staff should he working. Their famous minorcan soup? No taste just spicy hot . Their New England style clam chowder at one time one of the best? No clam clam flavor at all. Couldn't find a clam. Taste was odd. My crab cake special? Pieces of shell within. Not much crab taste. We're passing thru Florida for our anniversary, going through St. Augustine Thursday afternoon, we saw this restaurant and decided to try it. Excellent food, I got the broiled combo, stuffed shrimp and scallops, and my wife got the grilled chicken salad. Salad was huge and fresh, which their homemade ranch. My seafood was excellent. Service was excellent and very friendly. The restaurant atmosphere itself was very welcoming. We would come here again easily! read more
