Have been there several times and the food is always very good. The last time we went they had Trigger fish which I'd never had. The waitress recommended I try it. It is amazing. It's very hard to find in a restaurant or live seafood place. Believe it or not we found it recently at the Daytona flea market. They actually have a seafood place that you can buy food cooked or frozen. We bought a couple of filets, took them home to cook and they were great. Thank you to Schooners for introducing this to me. I recommend you try and make this a regular menu item. read more

Food was served piping hot by a very quick and courteous waitress. Soup was watery, everything needed an added flavoring just to get it to normal. My husband and I went to Schooners this past Saturday and I'm not normally one to leave a review, but our server Kate was amazing! Not only did she take great care of us from the very beginning to the very end, despite the place being extremely busy, but she gave us awesome suggestions on what food to order and told us the best way to get downtown to view the night of lights. Been here three times now and each time we have enjoyed it. It seems to always be crowded and there is usually a wait but it's never been more than 15-20 minutes and they have plenty of seats in the waiting area. I find the food is very good especially the broiled scallops. I love that you get to chose a salad or coleslaw PLUS 2 sides and it comes with hush puppies too, though honestly I'm not crazy about their hush puppies. The service has always been great and the prices are reasonable. We will certainly be back. read more

The best ( shall I say more) This restaurant always has great food. The specials of the day are great and the locals love it. They don't last during lunch. Fried shrimp is my favorite and the catch of the day trigger or mahi. Great vegetables seasoned and the best slaw from an old secret recipe. Usually busy opening at lunch with a line but bar is good for singles it couples. Competes with a Restaurant on the island who also has great seafood but is higher in prices and only takes cash. Schooners accepts credit cards and has two bar areas where the other does not. Located on us1 at the gates of St. Augustine on the south area by Mose State Park. Stopped in St. Augustine Fl. To split our trip to NC from Keys. Ordered two take outs, told the girl that took order twice we were in a motel. Spent $50.00 exactly on meal and tips. Got back to room. No forks, knives, napkins, salt, pepper, catsup to go with our seafood plates. I called the restaurant and the girl who answered asked me if I said I was at a motel. I said yes, twice. A little conflicted here. Let me explain. We've been driving by this spot for years but never stopped in. Some friends recommended giving it a shot and for the most part we loved it. They are known for their shrimp. And they didn't disappoint. The fried shrimp was amazing. The blackened shrimp, even better. They have a "pink" dipping sauce that was very good as well. Highly recommend getting the shrimp. My kids destroyed it (blackened). Our friends raved about the fried. Tried a couple of those also and will be ordering in the future. The catch of the day was amazing. Some of the best fish my wife has had. I'm not a seafood fan, but I would definitely order this in the future, which is very rare. My conflict and reason for a less than perfect 5 star review, the burger: I snapped a pic. I think my burger got mixed up with the kids burger. If not, it's a pretty sad offering for a $15 burger (with cheese). Ordered medium, came like a brick. Drinks: They do have specials which are worth getting there in time for. My wife really enjoyed her margarita. Staff: Attentive, if a little overworked. But hey, I'm sure staffing isn't fully up to speed after, or really during, this pandemic. Building: Clean and solid. Some outdoor covered seating which was nice. Not a large place but there are outdoor benches on either side of the entrance if you're waiting for a table. Parking: Not a large lot but there is overflow parking. Just be careful, it is not paved and if it's raining it gets a little muddy (muddy not the right work, but your shoes definitely suffer). Masks are required and they maintain empty tables to keep parties spaced. The waiting area on the other hand was jammed full of people at 1:30P on a Saturday. They quoted me and my wife 20 minutes for first available seating. The entire outside bar was empty so we just posted up there. The outside area is really nice. It looks brand new but our server said it's about 2 years old. They have a TV behind the bar so I was hoping to watch the first day of CFB. I asked our server if she could turn on the TV and put on any football game. She handed us the remote and said "I couldn't figure it out and I don't have time to right now"...We never did get it working. After looking over the menu we ordered a bowl of New England chowder, a lunch portion of the fresh catch (flounder) broiled and the fried seafood platter. Each entree came with 2 sides so we got corn on the Cobb, a side salad with blue cheese, cauliflower casserole and onion rings. The soup and salad came out first. The soup was pretty good. The salad was par for a side salad. The fresh catch was small but good. If I had to guess it was a 6oz portion with the skin on. The seafood platter was enormous. We could have ordered just the sampler and nothing else and we still might have not finished it. I'm not a huge fan of fried seafood but that's the only way my wife will eat it. In my opinion, as long as you don't end up with rubber when you pull it out of the fryer, it's hard to screw up fried seafood. The onion rings aren't worth the extra $1.50 or whatever it is to upgrade the side. I thought the cauliflower casserole was good. My wife didn't like it but I think that's more because of the aesthetics (it kind of looks like our cat's throw up). By the time we were ready to cash out our server was out of the weeds and kind of just hanging out around the bar. She gave the TV another go but no luck. She brought us the bill and we noticed it was only $25. I thought it didn't look right but I gave her my credit card and she took off. She was gone for at least 10 minutes. During that time I looked at my wife and said, "I knew $25 was too good to be true." When our server finally came back she gave me a credit card slip for $38ish, said thank you and left. This was definitely the right amount but she should have said something instead of just peacing out. We were going to pay for what we ate either way. Overall, this place isn't anything special. No offense to the senior crowd, but I should have know it was going to be plain ol' regular fried food when the 20 people in waiting area had a combined age we'll over 1,000. read more

Lunch at Schooner's. Understand that there are a couple of local restaurants that had chefs that worked O'Steen's and opened there own restaurants. I had fried shrimp comes with a beverage and two sides - a hush puppy is included (an up charge for side salad) and lots of fries. (Looking around lots of people had onion rings which looked amazing). My wife had the blackened fish (today mahi). Normally at a place that does primarily fried the blacked or grilled isn't always outstanding but her fish was prepared well. The place is busy but service was excellent so it's a 4. This is a family restaurant that's very casual. Servers were friendly and food was good with big portions. Fried shrimp looked great but I can't eat it so had a grilled player with fish, shrimp and scallops with 2 sides. We waited over an hour to get seated, then another 10 mins for a server to come to say hello. She was busy at the table next to us talking about her last trip to Montana. Sounded amazing, I'm going to have to go there sometime. Meanwhile, the 6 of us are just sitting there getting older by the minute. The coleslaw came out first, and there was a lot of it!! I got the Broiled Trio dish, it was ok, but not great. The Broccoli Casserole was terrible, a few of us had it and nobody could stomach it. The hush puppies had a weird flavor. Once we got service, it was pretty good, part of that was due to the fact that the place was emptying out, apparently, they close at 8:30 pm on Saturdays, that's weird. Sooooo thankful we stopped at Schooner's for lunch! It was the very first day they'd opened the deck, and it was a gorgeous day to sit there. Katelyn waited on us, with a smile and was super attentive. I had fried catfish, French fries, and pears. Hubby had blackened snapper, cole slaw, and pickled beets. Everything on our plates was eaten, and it was by far the best catfish I've ever eaten. The batter was light, cooked exactly how it should be. The hush puppies are perfection! They have a HUGE parking lot in the rear. We arrived shortly after 11:15 in the morning, and by the time we left the restaurant was just about full. I guess a lot of people already know how great Schooner's is, but if you don't, try it, you'll like it!! read more

Place is not what it use to be. Bartenders are lacking in experience when it comes to making any form of cocktail that needs mixing of ingredients. They are capable of pouring beer and wine only. Glasses are washed by hand in a less than clean sink behind the bar. There is always a residue of the previous drink, lip marks and/or lipstick, in my eyes not sanitized properly. Food is lacking in taste and temperature (lukewarm at best). However there is plentiful portions and sides accompanied with the entrees. Waitstaff are friendly. While the food is easy on the wallet, we are just not comfortable with the lack of presentation and cleanliness. read more

We have been eating excuses I was a child. It irritates me to hear that they called Lissa place of older people eat because I was eating here at 10 years old. I am still not old. The shrimp is lightly breaded which makes it stand out in there hush puppies are good as well as their onion rings. They have good tartar sauce and shrimp sauce. Some of the people complain about the atmosphere but I have to say I would rather go somewhere that has great food and somewhere that looks beautiful and has a lousy food. I have done this for traveling everywhere from Michelin star restaurants to regular down-home good places and I would rather eat pizza place it is simplistic but delicious and somewhere beautiful but lackluster in taste. I prefer the casseroles and a place that was the original that is similar to scammers and their shrimp but I would go either place. I encourage people to try it and don't be snobs just go there and enjoy the flavor of the food it is for the young too. You don't have to have somewhere it is fancy and wants to have delicious fried shrimp which is their claim to fame. You have to splurge once in a while but their fish is grilled or fried and good too. These people saying the shrimp is not fresh, that is very hard to believe but do you know for sure how do you see in the boxes for all of these other restaurants? They taste fresh here... I think some competitors might be posting things that aren't true. Try this restaurant and see what you think for yourself. Came from Clearwater to visit St Augustine. Before our trip, I scouted out several restaurants on several websites and that's how I found Schooners! We were not disappointed!!! I got the catch of the day, sea perch fried very delicately and very tasty. Hush puppies were nice and fluffy and the sweet potato casserole was out of this world! My husband got the fried chicken livers and devoured them. When back in St Augustine, we will definitely try again!! read more

I wanted to eat here based on a recommendation, and I was greatly disappointed. I was seated near the hostess's stand and had to hear their conversation throughout my meal, talking about personal issues that are not worthy of sharing publicly. When I was done eating I waited to pay my bill but the waitress never returned to my table so I looked to find someone, who made me wait even longer for the waitress to come with the check. In the meantime I overheard the young woman manager treat her employees with less than professionalism. I was feeling very embarrassed at her tone and nastiness towards the hard working busier. I felt it was a form of harassment. My crab cake was mostly filling, with very little crab meat. The management needs to be replaced at Schooners. Very disappointed. read more

While we were at North Beach near St.Augustine we went to Schrooners restaurant. It was highly recommended and it sure met the high bar. We got there just before "Happy Hour", and it was two for one on house wine and cocktails. The lounge was packed...great deal...so get there early. We were a party of four and were quickly seated at a nice booth by the front window in the dining room. Three of us ordered seafood dishes and one ordered one of the specials for the evening which was the pork chop. Of the seafood dishes, we had a fisherman's platter, fried shrimp, and broiled shrimp platter. Each came with two sides which made the meal plenty with enough to bring home for another meal. Excellent food on each dish and every one was pleased. Schrooners is a well known restaurant that has a long history and very popular with the locals. It was packed on a Thursday night and I'm sure it is every evening!! Great time...great restaurant. Definitely found a gem to return to next visit. read more

My food came out hot and was good, although there is something to the reviews saying that their breading is light on taste. My Wife and I go here a lot and have never had a bad meal. The servers are so dang friendly as well. Last night we witnessed a patron who no matter what the manager or servers could do they were not happy. It was easy to tell that this woman (not lady) has a miserable life. The husband was a poor crippled man who had no gonads. She made him go to the register and get the manager, even though it took him a good 5 minutes to get up then walk with a cane to get the manager. How I held my composure is beyond me. She complained the whole time which was all most 45 minutes. I got home and called Schooner's and offered my name and phone number should the owners get any complaints, they laughed and declined. Date night. First and last visit. Ordered our food received our salads and then the power went out. We were sitting in the back corner of a room with no windows. They moved everyone around us to new seating and even overheard their server saying she would take care of them with beer and cheesecake on the house. Our server was nowhere to be seen our food was delivered by someone else in the dark. It was now starting to really heat up inside. We picked at our platter for a good 15-20 mins sweating in the dark. We were trying to make the best of a bad situation. We were never checked in on after receiving our platter.
