Another staple of the community, Shriners has been in Montrose for as long as I can remember. They used to be on Honolulu Avenue when I was a kid. Though they've moved a few times since then, the still have the great quality that I remember from the beginning. This is the place to get a large selection of imported meats, cheeses, beer, dried goods and all things German & Bavarian. The deli and Grocery section are separate from the sandwich area which makes ordering convenient. Though they have a nice variety of great Cheese's including Muenster (my favorite) they only use Swiss or American cheese in their sandwiches. That's a drag but it is what it is. Okay, so this is one I don't get. I know Schreiner's has a lot of fans, but I am not one of them. The sausages are so fatty that I couldn't even enjoy them. When you bite into one, it's not juices that run out - it's oil and grease and fat. The way it coats my mouth makes me want to take sandpaper to my tongue. The sandwiches were completely unbalanced - all bread, hardly any filling. Imagine a big ol' piece of French bread with one pathetic sausage stuffed inside and filled with some greasy, overcooked onions and peppers. I also question the quality of the ingredients. In short, they taste cheap, as if they used the garbage discards from actual meat to cram into casing and pass off as sausage. The flavors are bland. Schreiner's Sausage in Glendale has been around for 75 years and I decided to give them a try take some of our harvested duck breasts (15 lbs) there to make snack sticks this year. I normally do these myself, but wanted to give them a go and see how their smokehouse and sausage process was. I used P S Seasonings to source my dry ingredients as follows: spicy dill, pickle, and whiskey old-fashioned but I couldn't leave it just like that. The spicy dill pickle was mixed with pork and leftoverscotch bonnet pepper mash from my hot sauce, and I had them add high temperature blue cheese to the first batch. The second batch was whiskey old fashioned spice mix duck and ground beef with high temperature cheddar cheese as well as the other half of the scotch bonnet pepper mash. I couldn't have asked for a better product to come out of their smokehouse. The coloring, the flavor, the snap and the mixture was just perfect and I had them add some ascorbic acid for just the right amount of Tang to the finished product. We went yesterday and had a great experience! This place is amazing! It's an institution in Montrose , it has been here for ages. We had not been there in a few years and were glad to finally return. We purchased some sausages and sauerkraut for our Oktoberfest party. the sausages, as well 98% of their meats, are made there. The sausages are huge meaty and delicious. They have a huge variety of sausages and many in the freezer case that are made fresh. I saw some roasts turning in the rotisserie , they looked delicious so I inquired if they sell those and they said they were roasting them and they would sell the next day as Oven roasted turkey! What??!! Amazing! I want to go back and buy some of that turkey! How amazing is that? To see turkey breasts being roasted then they sell them as cold cuts. So yummy! A pound of that and a loaf of bread and I am set for lunch for the week! I could hardly wait to return and try everything in their meat case, The meats look delicious. If you are looking for high qaulity meats and ingredients for your family, this is the place to go. We did grab some lunch on the way out. I ordered the roast pork sandwich, which was super tasty. Came in with my infant and toddler thinking I would order a few sandwiches to try while picking up some treats at Berolina. The store was crowded but there was no line at the sandwich station. The ladies that work at the counter are nice, but the gloves they put in their hands are never replaced. They touch everything with the same gloves customer after customer, and manipulate everything else with the same gloves. All I see is cross contamination. If they are going to handle cold cuts they should put clean disposable gloves after every customer. I see that in every business that manipulates food, but not here. I purchased a Tomahawk Steak 2.42 pounds at 19.98 total prices was $48.13 That's a great price for a steak like this. It's a good size for 2 to enjoy. There was some discoloration which isn't a big deal. A good amount of the meat in the window the day I went had the discoloration. Seasoning: Sea Salt, Black Pepper and a little bit of chopped onions along with a 2 table spoons of Olive oil. I normally add the olive oil to my onions and mix that in a big zip lock bag then drop the steak into the bag over night. Next Day: Grilled the steak on open fire for about 3 minutes each side to give it a nice char. Then turned it on the outer side to cook the outer fat a little and put it in the brick smoker. Usually 1.5 hours later you have a pink centered Juicy amazing steak. The meat looked right, but didn't taste that great. Generally when slow cooked the part next to the bone is amazing, but in this case it was terrible. We had other meats I picked up at Vons so that saved the day. I also purchased their breakfast links which were really good. I would try their sausages but not sure if I'll get their meats again. I think I'll stick to my usual place which is Gelson's Market. I don't know what happened at Schreiner's? Their sausages used to be delicious. Did they change the butcher, staff who makes sausages, etc.? When I picked up Bratwurst, Weisswurst and some "fresh" salads a few months ago I was surprised that the product tastes very bland. I thought that this was maybe just a one-time thing but unfortunately it wasn't. I went back last week and gave the Bratwurst, Weisswurst and Wurstsalad (German-style meat salad) another try but again, it tasted awful. I don't claim to be an expert but I am from Germany and years ago was a Chef by trade in Deutschland. I'm just really disappointed how much downhill Schreiner's has gone and it is very expensive on top of that. I have had the Schreiner's Bratwurst during the Montrose Oktoberfest weekend & found the bratwurst rather flat in meaty Umami as well as having a flavour profile that may be too subtle for my palate even w/ the addition of sharp Senf/mustard & addition of Sauerkraut/fermented cabbage that helps but does not overcome the general blandness of the Bratwurst. The dead tasting American bread didn't help either. (Just wondering why is it so hard to get good bread in Southern California.) Not that it is Schreiner's fault, but the beers at the last Oktoberfest that I had attended were Budweiser, ShockTop, etc. which are totally egregious beers for Oktoberfest when Paulaner, Erdinger, Warsteiner, Bitburger are some of the beers that would pair well with a German Wurst. I had gone to the Red Lion in Silverlake back in summer 2013 & had their Bierknacker which was a long thin pork Wurst that was smoked & spiced w/ paprika, garlic, white pepper, and had a great pork Umami flavour. So I went to Schreiner to find an equivalent. The nice older German counter person suggested the Spicy Links which are small sausage links which are flecked with dried red chiles. Yes, the piquant heat did augment to the sausage, but the meaty Umami was still subdued, & the spicing beyond the red chiles did not add to the flat meaty flavours. I also spied Bierwurst, & ordered a 1/4lb since I didn't know if I would like it. A younger counterperson gave me a slice to try, but only after she had cut my 1/4lb order which I accepted. The Bierwurst was blander & did not pique my interest. I have been to Deutschland 3 times & stayed for a total of about 2 months, and I have had great Currywurst even at the down home U-bahn station at Nollendorfplatz in Berlin. My lunches on the run, while touring Koenig See, Museum Insel, Neuschwanstein, Binnenalster, Kloster Ettal, Englischer Garten, Schloss Sans Souci, were many times at Schnell Imbiss/fast food joints & their Wuerste were excellent. Not sure why the Wuerste here are so lacking in finer flavours that I found even in the Bierknacker Wurst at the Red Lion. I will have to ask Red Lion where they get their Bierknacker. Wouldn't it be ironic if they tell me they get it as a special order from Schreiner's. Schreiner's, not the worst place to buy Wueste, but for me, not the best either. Perhaps expatriate Germans & Germanophiles treasure this store since there are many other products from the old country that trigger Der Schmaltz in their hearts. I finally got to try this place after wanting to try for a while. A cute German Deli with Bratwurst, Polish Sausage, Bologna, Pastrami, beer, cheese, giant pretzels and other groceries. The girls are all dressed in their German outfits. I'm not sure if it's just for Oktoberfest or if they are always dresses that way, but it was very festive and I liked it.
