I have had the Schreiner's Bratwurst during the Montrose Oktoberfest weekend & found the bratwurst rather flat in meaty Umami as well as having a flavour profile that may be too subtle for my palate even w/ the addition of sharp Senf/mustard & addition of Sauerkraut/fermented cabbage that helps but does not overcome the general blandness of the Bratwurst. The dead tasting American bread didn't help either. (Just wondering why is it so hard to get good bread in Southern California.) Not that it is Schreiner's fault, but the beers at the last Oktoberfest that I had attended were Budweiser, ShockTop, etc. which are totally egregious beers for Oktoberfest when Paulaner, Erdinger, Warsteiner, Bitburger are some of the beers that would pair well with a German Wurst. I had gone to the Red Lion in Silverlake back in summer 2013 & had their Bierknacker which was a long thin pork Wurst that was smoked & spiced w/ paprika, garlic, white pepper, and had a great pork Umami flavour. So I went to Schreiner to find an equivalent. The nice older German counter person suggested the Spicy Links which are small sausage links which are flecked with dried red chiles. Yes, the piquant heat did augment to the sausage, but the meaty Umami was still subdued, & the spicing beyond the red chiles did not add to the flat meaty flavours. I also spied Bierwurst, & ordered a 1/4lb since I didn't know if I would like it. A younger counterperson gave me a slice to try, but only after she had cut my 1/4lb order which I accepted. The Bierwurst was blander & did not pique my interest. I have been to Deutschland 3 times & stayed for a total of about 2 months, and I have had great Currywurst even at the down home U-bahn station at Nollendorfplatz in Berlin. My lunches on the run, while touring Koenig See, Museum Insel, Neuschwanstein, Binnenalster, Kloster Ettal, Englischer Garten, Schloss Sans Souci, were many times at Schnell Imbiss/fast food joints & their Wuerste were excellent. Not sure why the Wuerste here are so lacking in finer flavours that I found even in the Bierknacker Wurst at the Red Lion. I will have to ask Red Lion where they get their Bierknacker. Wouldn't it be ironic if they tell me they get it as a special order from Schreiner's. Schreiner's, not the worst place to buy Wueste, but for me, not the best either. Perhaps expatriate Germans & Germanophiles treasure this store since there are many other products from the old country that trigger Der Schmaltz in their hearts. I finally got to try this place after wanting to try for a while. A cute German Deli with Bratwurst, Polish Sausage, Bologna, Pastrami, beer, cheese, giant pretzels and other groceries. The girls are all dressed in their German outfits. I'm not sure if it's just for Oktoberfest or if they are always dresses that way, but it was very festive and I liked it. I got some Polish sausage and a big pretzels to go just because I felt that I had to at a German deli lol. Took it home and ate it with beer and it was really good :) read more

I went here to get casings for making sausage links at home. There is a deli counter, coolers of higher end groceries and a sandwich counter. I got a corned beef sandwich from them that was perhaps the smallest sandwich ever but it was tasty. The service was awful. I got my casings quickly but my sandwich, even trying to get my order placed was painful and badly organized. The only check out guy left the register to help someone walk a half block to their car. If you are in the mood for some good authentic German sausages, Schreiner's is the place to go. You can get food from the butcher or eat it there (where there often seems to be long line--good testament to the food). I have been here a few times. The meat is always excellent, although the sides are just OK. One really disappointing this is that they have a nice selection of German beers, but you cannot drink them at the store. This time I ordered the bratwurst with sauerkraut (which was a special for the day). This was outstanding. The brat was just about perfect and the sauerkraut was the perfect complement. Others in my party also enjoyed their food, particularly the pastrami. If you are in the mood for good meats, Schreiner's is a great place to go. read more

Had the pulled pork sandwich, or should I say the pulled pork mush. Worst pulled pork I have ever had. They pulverized it so much that you can't even tell that there is any meat in it and I don't what else they put in it. My dog wouldn't even eat it! I can bypass that they have no way of serving it to me except on bread, the guy was going to just put it in a paper bag!, I don't eat bread and I am sure I am not the only one so get with it! Well Wally T you got some problems here! The positive here is the meat counter. Great, friendly help. Zero problems there. Also they supply the brats, etc. for the small town's Octoberfest event. They are always delish! The BIG negatives here happen to come from sandwich shop side of the house in the back. To point out the sandwiches are pretty low priced. But there's a catch. There is HARDLY gets any meat provided. Then no options for lettuce, tomato no nothing. They even charge for extra pickles. Wow. But that's not even the bad part here. The somewhat elderly women line preps remind me of sadly of episodes of the "Soup Nazi" to a tee! They are unbelievable! The last 3 times in nearly the same experience. You order from typically a younger woman with the exact instructions for your sandwich, which is on right on the receipt. That's then turned over to these "ladies" to be made. One can see them looking at the receipt over and over again so the instructions are right there. Not only are they slowest on the planet for making basic turkey on a roll but it's surprisingly never right!! You're then given this complete attitude trip for pointing it out and requested it being fixed. They immediately offer "oh that's the way it comes". No the sandwiches are made to order dummy. So a BIG ruckus ensues to even try to get it corrected. This v. "oh I'm sorry let me correct that as you ordered it." Whatever happened to the customer possibly being right there??? On the last time around I was fed up and with that attitude trip and requested my money back. That turned into just as big ordeal with the young woman repeatedly saying "oh she can remake it." No that's too late now she refused and I've lost my appetite. It's often best now to do as requested! Then every time I request to speak to a manager/owner he/she's not in! I grew up in Chicago where German delis filled my old neighborhood. Also my grandfather was German so I grew up going to German delis and eating German food. Other than the Red Lion I've had a hard time finding something to scratch my German Chicago itch. Schreiner's does it and perfectly. I love this place. This German deli has been around the North Glendale/Montrose area forever. Great friendly service that has never messed up a sandwich for me- ever! The rolls are fresh and delicious. The deli meats are quality cuts that make for a perfect sandwich. I would say Schreiners is known for their "Black Forest Ham" sandwich but you cannot go wrong with any selection. I really like a turkey breast with extra meat (black forest ham) added. I took a coworker here today and he really liked his Polish Sausage sandwich and his Black Forest Ham sandwich. There is a very large selection of German beers either to buy individually or a 6 pack. The butchers section is also packed with great quality meats. I can speak for the ground beef and tri tips. Both are great. The salads are good... My mom used to always get some German potato salad. All in all, you can not go wrong here! read more

Went to Schreiner's for the first time yesterday and wondered how I didn't know about this place earlier even though I grew up in the area. I got some fresh bacon from the butcher counter, which had a selection of cold cuts that you don't see at most other places. Their cole slaw and potato salads are delicious. They have a deli counter in the back where they made decent sandwiches - very popular at lunchtime. Lucas made my sandwiches and he did a great job. The employees overall were very nice and attentive. Customer service here is top notch. read more

After many years driving by Schreiner's on my way home after chowing down at La Cabanita, today i decided to make Schreiner's a destination rather than a signpost on my ride home. Sometimes there is nothing that sounds better than a good wiener,: A Hot Dog or a Polish Dog or even an English Banger. So today i made it a point after doing some shopping in Montrose to check out this joint. My assignment? To purchase some Frankfurters with which to produce a mighty fine Hot Dog for some business friends who were coming over today for Lunch. Though Schreiner's is a lot more than sausages it is their tube steaks for which they have built their rep for the last 50 years. All of their sausages are made in house from what, i assume are recipes known to only a few. So i checked the place out today and left with several pounds of Franks which i served encased in soft rolls to a giddy flock of business associates who were happy to have a simple, straightforward wiener Sammy slathered with yellow mustard and dill relish with sides of potato or macaroni salad. Bear in mind that Schreiner's also sells fresh meats and has a full deli with a good selection of mustards, sauces, etc. I split and grilled them and my guests added whatever accouterments they liked: tomatoes, Chicago emerald green relish, sliced tomatoes, sliced fresh jalapenos, grilled white onions. One guest asked for mayonnaise and i just about asked him to leave. You never add mayo to a Hot Dog, never. The Franks were not overly salted but obviously and carefully seasoned with a savory mix of pepper, paprika and cayenne(?). Importantly, the skins popped when we bit into them: always a good sign and indicative of care and knowledge in the filling of the franks themselves. Ultimately some good business was conducted and i owe it all to the excellence of a Schreiner's wiener. I could have served something much more so called, elegant but the Dogs hit the spot for all concerned. Funny how that goes sometimes. read more

I'm honestly VERY disappointed in this establishment. After coming here for over 20 years, today is the day that i stop. I walked in with my dog and the lady asked if it's a service animal. I stated yes. Then she proceeded to tell me that I need to show her papers. ALTHOUGH it is very illegal to ask for supporting documentation, my boyfriend had an email for proof. Some lady comes in from the back, WITHOUT even looking at the email she proceeds to say "no, that technically does not count". She starts talking about the ADA disability act. First and foremost, if you are so familiar with the act then you should know that under the ADA disability act, establishments may NOT ask for documents. "Business owners and staff are only allowed to ask two questions regarding service dogs. They may ask if the dog is a service animal that is required due to a disability and what type of work or task the dog has been trained to do. The ADA prohibits them from asking about a person's disability. They are also not allowed to require any type of identification or certification documents for the dog or medical documentation from the handler. They also may not ask that the dog demonstrate what it has been trained to do." I will no longer support businesses that go out of their way to bullshit customers. read more

Let me start with the complaint. The hour that they open is listed as 9 on the yelp page and the door of the establishment. But on a printed card taped to the entrance it says 10 . So we ended up waiting 20 minutes for it to open because it was too far for us to go home and drive back. Anyway I ain't mad at em one bite into a sausage and I forgot about that. Delicious . I have had their sausages many times before over the holidays but have never gotten food from the deli until last week. So happy I did! The polish sausage sandwich was incredible. I ordered it on rye and added sauerkraut. My hubby ordered the tri-tip and really liked his too. I also recommend the macaroni salad and potato salad. I've eaten a lot of German food in my life and their sausages are hard to beat. Super affordable prices. Great service. Nice selection of German beer and some hard to find German products from lotions to candies. One bummer is that they don't have a restroom. Order double meat and you might get the norm or at least what they served 6 years ago during the post recession recovery. BRING AN ICE CHEST, we always have. ORDER your own cold-cuts to go after paying by the lb. The deli market where you pay by the 1/2 lb is the way to go. Grab a loaf of black bread and a few other market items. Worst service possible. I'm sure this establishment is esteemed by others, but on 03/05/19 at 02:14 pm of all the food locations I could have chosen I thought that Schreiner's would be quick and easy to pick up a bite in between my client appointments especially after the lunch rush. The law office I was at is located directly a cross the street. So I ran across the street and I asked for a cup of soup to go, paid, and then watched the cashier person put on a pair of gloves and disappear around the corner. There was another patron being made a sandwich, and I was surprised that as empty as this deli was the cashier staff person (blonde female) could not just pour the soup and bag it herself and give it to me. Upon her return from around the corner I asked can you please just pour me the cup of soup. She said NO. Apparently she also indicated it's not her job to pour the last cup of soup available. Only the sandwich maker can pour soup. I was also told that the sandwich person would be done shortly. NOT. Oddly the cashier was available to make me wait minutes and begins ring up the next patron who just just walked in to pay for his chips. I could see the cup and soup container. It was ridiculous of me to ask for my cup of soup So I asked for my money back and left thinking what poor customer service prioritization. I own a business where we train our staff to attend to a paying customer immediately. It would have taken less than 1 minute to give me that cup of soup. The cashier reflected a bit of attitude. I was polite but surprised and a tad bothered I had wait as only one person can pour soup in an empty deli fully staffed. read more

I was very disappointed by my sandwich experience here. Don't go here for the deli sandwiches. Some odd things: - I ordered 3 sandwiches and ended up waiting nearly 30 minutes for our sandwiches, and there was hardly anyone in front of us. It was REALLY slow. - It's a full deli, but they only allow you to choose between American and Swiss cheese for the sandwiches. Weird! I had to purchase a full separate package of cheese from the counter and ask them to add it to my sandwich. - Their French rolls aren't very good. Overall, I definitely won't be coming back here, unless i have a craving for specialty German candy. I highly recommend going somewhere else for a sandwich. read more
