I came here for dinner and had a decent meal. Inside it looks like a fancy German beer hall. I had the Bratwurst which came with mashed potatoes, braised cabbage, sauerkraut, pickles and mustard. I especially enjoyed the braised cabbage and sauerkraut. We also ordered Smothered Tots (mushroom gravy, horseradish, cheddar and pickled peppers). This was also very tasty, although the mushroom gravy made the tots soft if you didn't eat them quickly. I'm torn between 2 and 4 stars. I guess because my experiences here have not been consistent. I love the idea, the large, shared tables make it interesting, there is a good variety of sausages, the food is generally good and they are great with the beers, but the service varies too much. I've had service people who were super friendly and helpful, taking their time to explain the different wursts and beer flights and others who were just going through the motions, even a bit on the rude side the front of the house is always friendly and nice get the pretzel knots to share before the mains come today, the chips that came with the Reuben were stale (completely inedible) and my Reuben sandwich was barely warm. if this weren't a serious business lunch I would have complained but because of that I didn't want to make a scene. very disappointing read more

So glad we made a reservation at Schroeder's, though it was only 5:30PM! The place was PACKED so early - so many people hanging out, and part of the place was booked for a company's event, etc. We were seated near the back, which was perfect. Though a lot of people, we felt that we had our own space. The reservation was for 5 people, and 2 of us arrived first and they were able to seat us right away. One more came shortly, and the other 2 showed up around 40 minutes afterwards. The beer and cocktails we had were good. The beer came in various sizes, which was fun. Definitely the place for you if you like beer and a variety of it. I had a dark one, and it was really good, considering I don't drink beer often. A friend had a lighter beer, and another tried the cider. Now onto the foods; we ordered the following - Bratwurst (pork, black pepper, garlic) - I asked the server if he preferred the regular bratwurst or the spicy one, and he mentioned he prefers the regular one, so I went with that. It came with the sausage, along with some mustard, mashed potatoes, pickles, sauerkraut, and braised red cabbage. The sausage was tasty, and it went well with everything it came with, especially the mustard and potatoes. Nurnberger (pork, beef, all spice, cream, smoked) - This sausage was longer and thinner than the bratwurst, and it came with the same offerings. Chicken Calvados (chicken, apples, brandy) - a friend ordered this one, and enjoyed the sausage portion and the mashed potatoes, but not so much of the other items on the place (cabbage, sauerkraut, etc). Burger - a friend subbed the patty with an impossible patty. He mentioned that it was just alright, but the side of tots it came with was good. I've gone to Schroeder's a few times with coworkers just to grab drinks after work. Though it definitely gets crowded here, I do love going to this place! The staff is always really nice and pretty attentive despite being swamped with customers/orders. Decor is nice, pretty classy. They have a good selection of beers, make pretty good cocktails, and have a decent (though very particular) food menu. I've tried a handful of things from here: -Das Boot: Fun to share, essentially 4 pints in total in one boot. I've only gotten the Weinhenstephaner (hefeweizen) just because it's German and a pretty good, light beer. -Pretzels: Great! Definitely worth getting the cheese sauce, don't bother debating with yourself or others about it. -Schwings: Tasty! We got the sauce on the side and actually liked it better that way. I feel that the buffalo sauce hides the flavors that are described on the menu, but these are still pretty tasty wings. -Elderflower Fizz: Small, but tasty and well-crafted. -Kleine Blumchen: Means "small flower," a pleasant cocktail. Would get again. -Kartoffel Tots: Crispy, snackable, and addicting. Overall, great place. My only complaint might be that sometimes it gets too crowded/busy. Stopped by Schroeder's to grab a quick bite. This place needs to be featured on Gordon Ramsay's kitchen nightmares. Yikes. Started with the soft pretzels. Specifically asked for no beer cheese. Got beer cheese. These pretzels were microwaved from frozen. The texture and freezer burned taste were not appetizing. And as soon as they cooled down they were rock hard. Like not even edible rock hard. Ordered a burger which came with tots. The tots were from a school cafeteria. The burger was over cooked and came with little side dishes of mayo and ketchup. These appeared to have been pre filled and stored in a cooler. How hard is it to fill little containers of condiments to order. These condiments tasted off. The only highlight was that the pretzel bun was not bad. I get that this is not a culinary destination, but this food bordered on inedible. I wouldn't even go there to drink the beer on tap because there's nothing edible to snack on. Come on Schroeders. A soft pretzel is not rocket science. And they are inexpensive to make. My coworker and I grabbed a quick drink (or three) at Schroeder's and we were easily impressed. We've tried to grab a couple of drinks here before but they were always hosting a private party or were closed. Although we came on a Friday after work and they were slightly busy, we were easily sat at the bar. Best thing about this place is that it is not overly crowded as other bars, they still had loud music playing but you were still able to hear the person next to you talking and still be able to move comfortably around you. Probably because they are both bar and restaurant. Also loved that they are super close to the Embarcadero BART station, it made it (safer) and easier to catch a train back home to the East Bay! The drinks were fairly priced. Even better that they were a bit on the strong side. Throughout our night, I became curious about their food... Ended up ordering the tater tots. 3.5 stars I can't compare apples to apples since I've never seen to Schroeder's before the remodel, but I like the modern beer hall look. With its spacious communal seating arrangements encouraging you to get to know thy neighbnor. On the other hand, the openess this type of seating ensures that you hear their conversation. No biggie, we keep our convo to PG-13 but I went to the restroom (super clean!) and came back, only to find out that my neighbor took my napkin. Good ice breaker huh? ;-) You'll pay a little bit more for your food since it's in the Fidi, but the "california" style German food was a bit of a stretch for me. Their version of currywurst has red cabbage, sprouted lentils and chutney. Um, delicious but too busy for me. This is like mutant cousin of carne asada fries, the good mutant cousin, not the one that gets locked in the basement and shunned from society. Drunk, high or sober these will taste amazing. Pork Cracklins - House made Pork Rinds with pickles, and spicy mustard. Yes, these are addicting and you will order a second round. The Sauerbraten is ridiculous; braised beef, red cabbage, bacon, grapes and potato dumplings. Just think German styled Short Ribs. Insanely tender and the potato dumplings are amazing! BOARDS: Pretzel. I know this sounds ridiculous, but the pretzels here are like knotted balls of salty, spicy awesomeness and they come with a smoked butter and mustard. So good! Wunderbar! Schroeder's offers some of the best authentic German food I've had since meine Grossmutti's kochen. Highlights include: Vesperplatte: a delightful mix of cheese, pate, und house-made pickles Sigi's Market Salad: rather straight-forward salad Bratwurst: accompanied by kraut, don't be afraid to slather on some horseradish and/or house brown mustard Wiener Schnitzel: out-of-this world excellent (and this is coming from someone that doesn't like veal) Spätzle: small, tender dumplings from Heaven. Drink and eat like Germans do! A friend of mine who lived in Germany for a few years suggested we meet in this place and as soon as I stepped in through the doors I knew that I'd like the place! The space is vast and laid out nicely. They have a nice bar you can sit at, but the benches are the way to go. The beer is awesome, but you must watch for the alcohol content! Some of them are pretty high and you may be surprised if you do not pay attention to the description on the menu. I tried two different beers both of which were above 10% in alcohol content, but not surprisingly I do not recall their names! We tried an order of Chicken Schnitzel Sliders, A+! I then tried the Jäger Schnitzel; delicious but very rich. You may consider hitting the gym the next day because you will have a few extra calories stored before the night is over! My friend ordered the Wiener Schnitzel. I did not try it, but it looked good and he was happy with it. Judging from his very clean plate at the end, I have no reason to not believe him! Schroeder's holds a special place in my heart because it's an institution that has held on to its core values since as long as I've lived here. Always packed with stein going patrons, this place has continued to be a special part of the financial district for all to enjoy. Long gone are the days where they had free happy hour sausages, turkey legs, etc. warming in chafing dishes upon entry. Instead these days you find a renovated space fit for the the "new" San Franciscan and I gotta say, they did a nice job. Sure it saddens me when things have to change but, that's the theme for this town and there's nothing I can do about it. Anyway. A small crew of us had drinks for a coworkers birthday and we had a smashing time. We ordered some of the large Bavarian pretzels for the table and they were a perfect accompaniment to the beer. Schroeder's is the closest thing to a traditional beer hall you'll find in California. Think a big, loud room with long rows of tables and benches, beer and pretzels galore. The only difference would be replacing the raucous Germans with the after-work techie crowd. They have a great selection of beer and drinks, especially during happy hour, but what impresses me is their food. I haven't had a bad bite yet. the star of the show is their big, warm salty Bavarian pretzels with bier cheese and traditional ground mustard. These carby treats are absolutely addictive and the perfect comfort food after a long day in the office. The staff are on top of their game, too, especially considering how busy this place gets in the evenings. Our server was always available for a drink refill. The bartender was sweet and friendly. The closest I've been to an authentic beer hall was Canada, but Schroeder's is a close second. But if you don't mind the calories, then you'll be well rewarded. One of my favorite dishes here is the KÄSE SPÄTZLE (made with gruyere, goat gouda, & cream). It's essentially a German twist to Mac & Cheese. Trust me, you'll want to lick the plate clean. This is a great spot for birthdays and large groups. There are plenty of long wooden tables for private parties. They also offer a very kitsch drink special - Das Boot. It's essentially a giant glass in the shape of a boot that you fill with the beer of your choice. This is not for the faint of heart. This is "boot" could easily serve 4 or 5 thirsty people. In any case, it's a cute concept. And it makes for a great photo op. Service here is fast and efficient. The food & drinks are top-notch. And it just has a fun vibe. Came to Schroeder's with some colleagues to enjoy some light bites and drinks. It was a time to celebrate a 2 day offsite and what better way to reward our hard work than over some German food! When you enter, you're greeted by a host stand to the left, a bar to the right and lots of picnic style seating throughout. I thought it was odd that although we had reservations, there was no "reserved" sign on our table when we arrived. Not a big deal at the time because no one was occupying the table but the joint filled up quickly and seating seemed to be on a first come first serve basis. Since only part of our party arrived at the same time I did, we kept having to tell people that our table is reserved while we waited for the rest of the party. The service overall was helpful and quick. There was a 'hmm' moment but overall, good service. For starters, I asked my server to recommend a bourbon or whiskey drink and that I usually go for Manhattans and he immediately recommended the Back in Black for $12: wild turkey bourbon, averna and chocolate bitters. GREAT CHOICE for a drink! Tasted exactly like a Manhattan, which I appreciated. Here's what our table ordered for food: -Kartoffel tots for $7: a bowl of tater tots with a couple of dipping sauces. Nothing out of the ordinary, loved that it was nicely salted -Two Barvarian pretzels for $12: served with a Bourbon mustard and bier cheese. Although I love pretzels, this dish was WAY TOO salty. Even after scrapping much of the salt off, still too much. -Fried pickles and mushrooms for $9: I mean who wouldn't love this dish?! I asked the host their hours and they said 7. After letting them know I'd been trying to call with no answer for the last 45 minutes, and it wasn't even 7, or 6:45, yet I was simply told, sorry we're closed. If you want to go somewhere with a large party, this is the easiest place to go to in the city. The environment is super cool and trendy with the lights and the long tables. I came here for my boyfriends birthday party with about ten people. The tots and the pretzel apps during happy hour are a must. I ordered the "fried chicken sandwich" which is really just schnitzel in a bun but I loved it. The food here is solid and the cocktails are deliciously made. I work a block away at a company that has regularly come here for small team events and official events where we have booked the back area, many times it has been at my request that we have events here. Tonight, that changes. My birthday was yesterday, so I decided to have about 10 coworkers and friends meet at schroeders tonight to celebrate. Given that its my birthday and that i am the one bringing everyone together, my only wish is for everyone to enjoy themselves. That unfortunately was not the case due to poor business practice and their sorry excuse for a manager, Dave. Two issues: 1) my girlfriend brought me cupcakes as a surprise to share with the group. Some random dude comes by and says there is a $2.50 plating fee and begins taking the cupcakes away without us having much say (it was so awkward that several people thought it was some random drunk guy joking with us, but really it was an employee taking away 6 cupcakes ). The cupcakes had a candle on each, so we thought that maybe they were taking it away to light the candles and deliver a good customer experience, but unfortunately, the cupcakes were brought back on a single plate (bullshit to charge per plate and bring us one plate) and they didnt even have the decency to light the candles! Wha?? Gonna pause right here. If i was the business owner of schroeders and someone has chosen to a) celebrate their bday at my business and b) bring high value customers to celebrate, i would want to ensure they have a real good time. The LEAST i could do, if im charging $2.50 per cupcake, is LIGHT THE DAMN CANDLES! Make the group feel good. Deliver a great customer experience. Go above and beyond. She bought her meal for $17, opened it up at the table, took one bite, and the manager immediately picked up the box of food and told her she couldnt have outside food in. She tried to put the food away and reason with him but he snatched the box of food. She was given no chance to put the box away, she was robbed of $17. Ultimately, i get the reasoning behind certain policies of no outside food allowed but: 1) nowhere is this spelled out online or inside 2) if youre going to enforce it, give your customers the benefit of doubt and let them put the food away 3) if youre going to take away cupcakes and charge $2.50 per cupcake, plate each cupcake and at least light the damn candles! It seems like these guys were founded in 1890 and that customer experience was frozen in time....its so sad that im so motivated to write this post. Lastly, after i paid the bill, i asked to speak with the manager (dave) to share feedback. I shared the above and he got defensive and talked shit about my coworker eating food and not stopping (lie). Secondly, he said in a very fake tone "oh what, we didnt light the candles? What? Thats the least we could do! Ok, next time, i promise we will light the candles and i will take care of this". Um, you mean next year exactly on my birthday you will be here and remember this incident and you will personally see to it that my bday candles are lit? I call BS. The SADDEST part of the night...after discussing my shitty experience talking to this "manager" we see him two tables away YELLING at another patron and losing his mind shouting at this guy and his coworkers trying to calm him down (i have the video if anyone would like to see...trying to figure out where/how to post this..). It was good to know that i am not crazy and that this guy really is a lunatic. Its safe to say that i, or my company, will never be back here unless: 1) business owner provides a partial refund and 2) dave is fired (really, fire this guy). Yelp had one of their 10 Year Anniversary events here and we had a really fun time! Shroeder's was completely closed to the public that night. Stopped in for a couple beers after work because we saw the "Happy Hour" sign out front. Was told by the waiter that happy hour is 2-4. :( That's the last time we fall for that! I can't fault the place for me not reading the sign completely. Anyway the beer and pretzels were wonderful. There was German writing on the walls so I could practice my reading skills. This is cool place to visit if you're ever in the Embarcadero area. The interior is something to marvel at, it looks like it hasn't changed since the 1920s. The staff is informative and patient, especially if you're not familiar with German food. Of course you have to try a German beer, but if you're going to do a boot, be aware of how much liquid you are pouring down your throat. Whatever you order there, make sure you get a side order of pretzels. read more

We were craving German food and because we were going to be in SF, figured we'd try this place out ... we'd been here many many years with nary a memory of it. Though I'd requested inside seating, though it was fairly early, the noise was already deafening, with several big screens.v.'s--and a live band setting up! They have fantastic seating outside, with heaters and a bit of covering for the ubiquitous chill. Our server, Billy Ray, was a delight, a guy I'd want to make friends with pronto, he was absolutely not phoning it in, very responsive and present, shooting the breeze, and despite that they were slammed on a Fri night, he came back to check on us again again, getting us whatever we'd asked for. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share: Bavarian pretzel with grainy mustard and bier cheese; tater tots; bratwurst with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes; jagerschnitzel with mushroom sauce, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes; warm potato salad. Everything was a home run, a total hit. That pretzel--damn, dude, the crusty salt if you have high bp, it's not for you--but the doughy springy soft texture, freshly baked and piping hot capable of inflicting third degree burns. No joke. That cheese dip is absolutely everything; if you'v ever had Welsh rarebit, this is the ticket. About those tater tots, I mean, nuff said. Who doesn't like deep fried mini potatoes? And the bratwurst was more than decent, nicely browned on the outside, though I must say I have definitely had better, though it was in Germany and in another very authentic little German place in the city. The schnitzel was bang on, nicely breaded to a crunchy perfect crust oozing with fresh mushrooms. The mashed potatoes are fantastic, especially if you like rustic down to earth preparation, and the sauerkraut could've used more caraway seed, but the freshness can't be beat. The warm potato salad was my least favorite thing, in fact it was awful, super bland and sort of mushy, zero flavor. But given the rest of the meal was spot on, all was fine.
