This is a must try spot in Portland that is nestled slightly away from the heart of the old port. It is a unique experience you will not be finding elsewhere in this city known for its bustling culinary scene. The dining room is exactly what you want when you're thinking about eating authentic german food, it's like you're sitting down in Oma's kitchen. The wall decor is eclectic and fun. Very few tables so you must reserve in advance. There is a small window where you can see the two owners cooking. We opted to bring 3 german wines to have with our meal since it is BYOB and were presented with glassware once we sat down by our very attentive waitress who answered all our questions. Complimentary rye bread with a cream cheese and sour cream spiced spread was brought to the table while we looked over the menu. A wonderful start to the meal. For our starters we went with the potato pancakes with house cured salmon and the onion and gruyère tart. The potato pancakes were my favorite out of the two, they had the most perfect pillowy texture and crisp. But the tart was a standout for the rest of the table, it had a layer in the middle of carmelized onions instead of having the onions mixed throughout! It was blowing us away. Moving onto our main we got the first three listed in the menu. The bratwurst was put simply by my other guests as "the best bratwurst i've ever had AND the best sauerkraut as well". The german potato salad was a hit as well with a great vinegar taste. Then my surprising favorite was the pork schnitzel. This was so incredibly juicy even after being pounded and fried. i loved the potato gratin that is came with, the scalloped potatoes reminded me of a dish i had as a kid. The mushroom gravy was deliciously rich. The overall dish that absolutely blew the whole table away was the beef roast. This beef was incredibly tender and cooked to perfection. The marinade was amazing and when paired with the red cabbage was such a good balance of richness and acidity. The potato dumplings were very interesting and had a great dense texture to them. I don't think i can compare this experience to anything else i've done in portland. It is truly one of a kind and i really feel like i learned so much about german cuisine. Whenever my wife and I travel we always seek out German food as it's one of our favorites. We were super excited to find that Portland had Schulte & Herr. It's in a good location and the restaurant itself is very quaint. They can only seat about 20 people total so a reservation is a good idea. Our server/one of the owners I believe was very personable and actually from Germany. We were the last party to arrive but the food came out in a reasonable amount of time even with only one person cooking from what we could see. The portion sizes and execution were very well done. I had the beef Sauerbraten and my wife the pork Schnitzel. We enjoyed our food and would go again if in the area. They are BYOB, so sadly I wasn't able to try any German beers but that was fine. Amazing little restaurant on the peninsula. Due to COVID it is currently take out only. Authentic German cuisine that'll make you think you're in Europe. The schweineschnitzel was cooked to perfection, it was thin and the breading remained on. We tried both the potatoes gratin and German potatoe salad and we aren't sure which one we'll get next time. This unassuming German restaurant does a great brunch! My in-laws rave about it, and for good reason. Their brunch dishes are tasty, fairly priced, and uniquely German in a town with a lot of other brunch options. I had the sautéed spaetzle with caramelized onions, emmenthal, and chives, which was cheesy and delightful. It's everything I want in a breakfast carb. My husband and best friend both got the German-style omelette, which was good but didn't wow them. My best friend's husband got the potato pancake and lox plate. The portion was on the small side, but the potato pancakes were melt-in-your-mouth and perfectly seasoned. We all agreed they were the best potato pancakes we've ever had. The restaurant itself is cute but could benefit from stronger air conditioning in the summer. It was uncomfortably hot when we ate there last year. So was going to wait till I get home to rate this great restaurant!!! But no I'm doing it now. Lol What a great experience here in Portland, ME. with this hidden gem at the forefront. Had lunch here then came a day later for dinner. Well worth the trip to Maine for some German home cuisine. So for lunch we had the bread to start it off and you get butter with a cream cheese for your bread. Then I had the split pea soup. Let me tell you... order this it's a comforting wonder. As eating it I wanted it to snow. Lol For lunch entree' we had the the special of the day the kielbasa sandwich and bratwurst. So good! Second time here... We brought wine and started with bread and ordered the wurst platter to enjoy our wine. They are so accommodating here and super friendly people. How can I not instantly love a place that plays Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" album? Just like that, Schulte & Herr, you've won my heart. I wouldn't say that German food is something I frequently crave... though I am weirdly addicted to potato pancakes (topped with BOTH sour cream AND apple sauce at the SAME TIME... weird? Maybe. Delicious? #'Chup), warm potato salad, and beets. These are dishes I can make myself however, so they aren't necessarily something I'd go out of my way for. Unless it's rainy and I'm feeling particular lazy... enter Schulte & Herr. No, S&H isn't located in the most picturesque part of town, but all the better for us locals... I think it's safe to assume that most tourists wouldn't consider walking that part of Cumberland. The quaint restaurant is tucked behind a few trees (and so it can be hard to spot if you're flying past), so look for the white Christmas lights adorning the window. The inside is "charming" - in my opinion the decor feels both European and like my grandmother's house... this isn't a bad thing. The meal started with complimentary bread (some multigrain rye concoction, I believe?) accompanied by a cream cheese/sour cream/paprika/cornichons/chive spread (which tastes EXACTLY and PERFECTLY how you would think it would). For those carboholics, you're going to need to show a little self restraint. Had I not been in such polite company, I would have plowed through the entire basket with no regrets. Unfortunately, I couldn't have the potato salad because it's got bacon in it (le sigh) and I totally forgot to order beets, but I did get the potato pancakes which come three to a plate and are about three-ish inches in diameter. Accompanying them are both sour cream and apple sauce (though you can also get them with lox and horseradish sauce, and apparently that serving size is bigger). I thought the pancakes were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside; but, they were just a little under-seasoned - no worries, 'cause a healthy sprinkle of salt remedied that instantly. I'm not huge into lunch, so when I do eat it, it has to be on the "lighter" side. That being said, I have to admit... slathered with both apple sauce and sour cream, I was insanely satisfied with the portion and the price (how can you beat $5?!?!) of the pancakes. When I AM craving German food, I have no doubt that I'll find myself here again (especially if they continue to feed my soul with good music, too!). read more

We have really enjoyed Schulte & Herr's meals. For years we've been going to this small, sweet restaurant on Cumberland Ave. They now also do an excellent job for take-out, which we've done since the pandemic started. Probably not a bad idea to order the day before. I set the table at home, jump in the car to pick up the meals and quickly transfer it onto plates. It has still been perfectly warm without having to reheat the food. Being European-born myself, I'm really fond of the traditional Sauerbraten. My husband loves the Schnitzel and potato gratin. Despite being in a rougher part of Portland, Schulte & Herr makes you feel at home and comfy inside. I love coming here for Sunday brunch. It's a good idea to make a reservation because it's on the smaller side and it fills up fast! I have seen people turned away at the door and told to come back in an hour or so to get a table. The service here has been great. The waitresses are intimately familiar with the menu and have always been nice to me and my friends. My only reason for docking 1 star is that on my last visit it was hot outside and pretty much just as hot inside. There was an air conditioner but for some reason it was not turned on and it needed to be. The potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce are delicious. My friends love getting them with lox and although it looks excellent I'm not a fan of fish so I prefer the plain pancakes. I ordered this with a side of sausage and felt full without getting that "I ate way too much!" feeling. Perfect portion. On my second visit, I ordered the Sunday special. The Sunday special is a beef pot roast with mushroom gravy served with delicious potato dumplings and your choice of a side (three huge slices of bacon, yum!). Now that I've ordered this, this is what I'll be getting every Sunday! It was a large portion, enough that I was full and had to push the plate to my friends to help me finish. The dumplings were the hero of this dish. Pro Tip: BYOB! That's right. Bring your own bottle (or two!) of champagne with you to brunch and have mimosas! We had an amazing dinner here. We've been to Germany several times, and the food is authentic and true. We ordered the pork schnitzel with potato salad, sauerbraten with red cabbage and dumplings, and spaetzle with onions and cheese. The pork was thin and tender, and the breeding crisp; it was perfect! Reminded me of my German mother's cooking, and the coffee was perfect dinner brunch strength for me. Really strongly recommend this place. I eat quickly and in large amounts, what I ordered was perfect for me. People on here complained about portion size, this kept me full until a late dinner. This is one of our favorite places in town, along with Isa and Tempo Dulu. The food is amazing, and the staff is among the finest I've experienced. The decor is simple but clean and did I mention the food? You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and we've probably tried everything. Standouts are the German breakfast plate, with meats, cheeses, fantastic breads and jam. We usually get that and potato pancakes with capers and salmon and tons of coffee. And when they have their hash you do not want to miss it. It's out of this world. Their dinners are also top notch, the schnitzel being a particular favorite. All in all, it is a terrific place that we return to time and again, both for the food and the friendly service. I had to try this German restaurant and compare it with what they have in Europe. So I ordered the bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad. I would say that it was just OK. Maybe I'm a little spoiled and it's not a fair comparison. ;) It's a cute little place and the waitress (I think probably the owner as well) was super nice. I finally went to Schulte & Herr today after trying a few times in the past just to find out they were closed (they have odd hours but Sunday is the day to go). The decor is homey and makes you feel like you're at your grandmothers house for Sunday brunch. On Sunday they offer a special Sunday roast which is out of this world. $12 for pot roast with mushrooms, a thick juicy sauce, (1) side of your choice, and potato dumplings. The potato dumplings are hands down, one of the best things I've tasted so far in 2014. They have an amazing treasure inside the potato dumpling which was maybe fried bread ? I'm not sure, but I won't question the dumplings amazingness and move on to other points in the meal. I actually didn't have the pot roast I just siphoned off some of my boyfriend's meal (in return for a fourth of my belgian waffle). I heard good things about the Belgian Waffle so I had to order that. It had a crispy crust and a delicious blueberry syrup on top. In some spots the blueberry syrup made the waffle a little soggy but by folding it over on top of a crisp part - the consistency was just right. I can't wait to go back and try the potato pancakes with lox or the bergmannkiez! The coffee was bottomless and great too. They don't have many seats but I feel like the small table set-up is great for Schulte & Herr because they can be attentive enough to you (i.e. full water glasses, coffee refills, etc.). A lot of places default to more table tops and the service ends up suffering but at Schulte & Herr you'll feel right at home. read more

I brought my dad here for his birthday along with some other family members. My father was born and raised in Germany so we put the restaurant to the true test. Overall, we were all really impressed. The place is quite small with just a few tables spread out among one room so it's a nice intimate environment. It almost feels like you're eating in someone's home. The service was very friendly and accommodating too. Most importantly though, the food was delicious! In terms of the appetizers, the potato pancakes were flavorful and perfectly crispy. My cousin had the trout salad which she found to be really tasty as well. The entrees were just as good. I had the spätzle, which I was a bit skeptical of because I've never really enjoyed spätzle before but it was the only vegetarian option so I felt compelled to order it. Nevertheless, I was extremely surprised at how good it tasted. It was very cheesy and the noodles had a little crust on them that made them really tasty. I've now decided I need to re-evaluate my views on spätzle. I guess I just never had a good version until coming here. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well. My father had the sauerbraten, which he said was very authentic. We treated my dad to the cheese cake with a raspberry sauce for dessert. He loved it! It was less dense and lighter than an American style cheesecake. My father even went as far as to say that the chef made it the same way his mother did when he was a kid. Simplicity and truth of cuisine were the keys here, and appropriate to celebrate for Sunday Brunch on Easter Sunday which celebrates the life and times of a simple man whose words have been revered, reverberated, and reinvented over the millenia. It's a wonderful, very humble eatery that is homesteading in a nicely recovering neighborhood. The food is real German, not some embellished overly-hip brew-pub's tweak. The kind of place you might dine in a small German village and speak of the amazing meal that you had in that little town in seemingly nowhere. I had the traditional holiday roast lamb with the potato balls and root vegetables and it was heaven. We also tried the waffles with the fresh plum compote and the raisin-potato french toast, both of which, off of the very short, simple menu, stood out. For dessert we tried the carrot cake and the nutella cake, both of which were excellent, and made use of traditional frosting methods using marzipan to help stiffen the icing and preserve it while giving it wonderful balance against the soft baked goods inside. Service was equally good, and the surroundings a bit plain but spotless and perfect. Happened upon this place when my partner and I couldn't be seated at another eatery. Place is unique and the food was too, in a good way! Hearty fresh bread with some lovely spread. Those potatoe pancakes or whatever they were, like a mcdonalds hashbrown from heaven. The salad with some smoked fish, beets and capers was solid. I can't remember the names of our entrees and I'd butcher the spelling even if I did. Heavy and home cooked. That sauerkraut, was just lovely. The looks on their faces showed pure bliss and the aroma from their plates made my mouth water. If I ate land meat, I would have ordered that as well. I ended up enjoying the fish goulash which had an Italian feel to it because it had mussels with a light fish, fresh vegetables and potatoes all in a tomato base. Although we were thoroughly satisfied after the entree we were curious enough to ask for dessert. The meal was delicious, so the dessert must be too!
