Kielbasa to go served with sauerkraut and mustard

Amazing little restaurant on the peninsula. Due to COVID it is currently take out only. Authentic German cuisine that'll make you think you're in Europe. The schweineschnitzel was cooked to perfection, it was thin and the breading remained on. We tried both the potatoes gratin and German potatoe salad and we aren't sure which one we'll get next time. You have to try the schwäbische spätzle too! Carmelized onions to perfection. While the menu is small, you'll want to get one of each! We will be regulars at this place.

How can I not instantly love a place that plays Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" album? Just like that, Schulte & Herr, you've won my heart. I wouldn't say that German food is something I frequently crave... though I am weirdly addicted to potato pancakes (topped with BOTH sour cream AND apple sauce at the SAME TIME... weird? Maybe. Delicious? #'Chup), warm potato salad, and beets. These are dishes I can make myself however, so they aren't necessarily something I'd go out of my way for. Unless it's rainy and I'm feeling particular lazy... enter Schulte & Herr. No, S&H isn't located in the most picturesque part of town, but all the better for us locals... I think it's safe to assume that most tourists wouldn't consider walking that part of Cumberland. The quaint restaurant is tucked behind a few trees (and so it can be hard to spot if you're flying past), so look for the white Christmas lights adorning the window. The inside is "charming" - in my opinion the decor feels both European and like my grandmother's house... this isn't a bad thing. The meal started with complimentary bread (some multigrain rye concoction, I believe?) accompanied by a cream cheese/sour cream/paprika/cornichons/chive spread (which tastes EXACTLY and PERFECTLY how you would think it would). For those carboholics, you're going to need to show a little self restraint. Had I not been in such polite company, I would have plowed through the entire basket with no regrets. Unfortunately, I couldn't have the potato salad because it's got bacon in it (le sigh) and I totally forgot to order beets, but I did get the potato pancakes which come three to a plate and are about three-ish inches in diameter. Accompanying them are both sour cream and apple sauce (though you can also get them with lox and horseradish sauce, and apparently that serving size is bigger). I thought the pancakes were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside; but, they were just a little under-seasoned - no worries, 'cause a healthy sprinkle of salt remedied that instantly. I'm not huge into lunch, so when I do eat it, it has to be on the "lighter" side. That being said, I have to admit... slathered with both apple sauce and sour cream, I was insanely satisfied with the portion and the price (how can you beat $5?!?!) of the pancakes. When I AM craving German food, I have no doubt that I'll find myself here again (especially if they continue to feed my soul with good music, too!).

    Dinner setting. BYOB. Greatness :-)

So was going to wait till I get home to rate this great restaurant!!! But no I'm doing it now. Lol What a great experience here in Portland, ME. with this hidden gem at the forefront. Had lunch here then came a day later for dinner. Well worth the trip to Maine for some German home cuisine. So for lunch we had the bread to start it off and you get butter with a cream cheese for your bread. Then I had the split pea soup. Let me tell you... order this it's a comforting wonder. As eating it I wanted it to snow. Lol For lunch entree' we had the the special of the day the kielbasa sandwich and bratwurst. So good! Second time here... We brought wine and started with bread and ordered the wurst platter to enjoy our wine. They are so accommodating here and super friendly people. For dinner entrees we had the schnitzel and the sauerbraten so good. It was so good. Oh I'm stuffed but I hear the dessert is good so going to try that as I sent this review out. Thank you so much for awesome service and great food. See you in the future.

Don't even bother showing up without a reservation. Even If every table is open and it is dead inside they will not be able to seat you.

Happy Clam is about as far off the beaten path as you can get in Downeast Maine. And though it is…read morethe only restaurant for miles, I expect that many tourists would pass on it based on the appearance, that of the clichéd "dive bar." But those in the know - tourists and locals alike - ensure that it is always busy, and it seems especially popular with bikers. Most of the rowdiest patrons choose the outdoor pavilion out back. I believe it serves the same menu but it's much louder, especially when there's live music or karaoke. Not my thing so I sit inside. The food is a peculiar mix of typical bar food, New England seafood, and German. Yes, German. Schnitzel, Rinder Rolladen, Goulash, Spaetzle, you'll find all of these. I've tried the Schnitzel, which I got with red cabbage and spaetzle. It was a generous portion and pretty decent. Authentic? Perhaps not. The "German Potato Salad" was regular mayonnaise-based with chopped pickles and bacon. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's not German Potato Salad. On another occasion I tried the lobster reuben which has lobster instead of corned beef. Good but rather messy to eat from the melted cheese and Thousand Island dressing along with the plentiful lobster. Fries were ok, not outstanding. On a third occasion I tried the crab cakes which was a mistake and I should have known better. Salty, too much Old Bay, lots of filler. Gourmet or "fine dining" this is not. But definitely worth a visit or two or three. But be aware: the "dive bar" atmosphere also extends to the ambience and cleanliness - or lack thereof. The men's room smelled exactly as you might imagine, and the soap and paper towels had both run out. The ice bucket, curiously, was on the customer side of the bar, 6 inches from where I was sitting, separated by a flimsy plexiglass shield. So I advise you to stick to beer or wine - avoid the cocktails. Other than that, it has a fun kitchy feel to it, 70s TV posters, photos of sports celebreties and the like, and too much patriotic decor for my liking. But my waitress was friendly, I've enjoyed my visits, didn't get sick, and would probably go back.
