Came in with a broken key asked for a copy took 5 mins in and out. Tried it that same day it didn't work went back the next day to see if they can do anything and they retried wich was nice and told me it would be better if i had a original they can cut. Oh my good lord! A REAL locksmith. Not someone with a cell phone who buys referrals from a website. Extremely reasonable rates. They sent a person who knew what he was doing. I bought the lock I wanted (choice was Schlage or Yale) elsewhere, and he installed it and that was all. (Please call to ask first if they have an opinion on the brand you like. You may be surprised that some expensive brands are junk.) It was time to upgrade the crummy (Emtek) lock that came with our house, and kept giving us problems. Y'all may not realize that it pays to get your keys made at a real locksmith, too. No more expensive, but they work better. I can recommend Schwenk, and also Foster Bros. in Sunnyvale. Foster Bros does not do residential lock service, though. Foster brother will only cut keys. read more

This place has been in the same location for years. I personally never needed to use them until today. A couple of days ago I went to the Home Depot to have a couple keys made for my car, after the keys were made I tried them out and guess what? You got it, they didn't work. I decided to go to the Professional and have him do it. He looked at the keys and said instantly found the problem. He said "those keys don't have a shoulder, your keys need a shoulder" long story short he made me 3 new keys and everyone of them worked silky smooth in the tumblers. Needed a wonky dead bolt cylinder repaired. After leaving three messages with a five star rated locksmith near me and no return call, and calling a second one who didn't seem to want my business (he told me to oil it!), I called Schwenk Locksmith. After pulling a "Sarah Connor" (breaking my key into a lock, but accidentally) I needed to get the key removed. I tried removing it myself, but couldn't do it. I called the last locksmith I dealt with, and he recommended AA Locksmith on The Alameda and this place. I went to AA first since they were closer. The woman there said it would cost a minimum of $40. Luckily I called Steve from Schwenk beforehand and he quoted me $15, so I immediately went there. He removed the broken key within a minute, and although I was still willing to pay the $15, he waived the fee altogether. AA locksmith has lost my business, and Schwenk lock and safe has now earned it, plus I will recommend them to anyone I know. read more

E-mailed a picture of a commercial door issue we had, and Gene called me back to let me know that the fix was super-simple for anyone to fix and offered to show me, if I dropped by the shop. Otherwise, of course, he'd be glad to send staff to fix the issue for their minimum on-site fee. But that it would literally just take a few minutes to handle. I dropped by and he showed me the issue on a mortise lock set he had that was very analogous to ours. Gave me a couple of tips to fix the issue most efficiently, and I took care of our issue in just a few minutes. We've turned to Schwenk for locksmithing, key copying, and keymaking for both commercial and residential/car needs over the years. And they have always been very responsive and perform work with diligence and expertise. And today's experience just reinforces their value as a contractor one can trust. I didn't know before, but Schwenk also handles door work: doors, opener systems, pushbar / panic bars, and generally all sorts of commercial and residential door system installation, maintenance, and repair. Absurd! Had my father take in a Schlage Keyed Entrance Lock and Deadbolt Model Number F51 PLY in Bright Brass to have it re-keyed for a clients home. At the same time I requested he order me another F51 PLY in Bright Chrome as my client requested a different finish on either side of the door. Was told it could be ordered and available in one day. You should understand that this is a standard residential grade Schlage product that can be bought at Lowes and The Home Depot but not in Bright Chrome unless you order it online. My Family has lived in Santa Clara for 54 years. The client for whom this lockset was for is also a long time resident of Santa Clara. We try to support local businesses. I am a general contractor and am familiar with basic residential lockset installations and have installed many. I KNOW THAT BY GOING TO A LOCAL RETAIL LOCKSMITH I WILL PAY MORE $ THAN IF I PURCHASED ONLINE OR AT A BIG BOX STORE. PERHAPS EVEN 2X AS MUCH. They re-key the Brass set I brought in at no charge and place the order for the Chrome Set. They call when it arrives. I again send my father (who is paid to run errands for my business) to pick up and purchase the new Chrome set. When he arrives at my job site he suggests I open the boxes carefully as he doesn't think they are the right match. He is correct. They are not even close! I ask him how much I was charged and he says... ARE YOU SITTING DOWN?.... "$240.00" I say, "Are you !!!!ing kidding me!" Then apologize to my dad for my poor choice of words. I call to let them know they have not ordered the right product. I DO NOT say a word about the outrageous price. I am curtly told that, "I should not have sent an "old man" down to do my business". I sternly reply that he is my Father, not an "Old Man". I am them cussed out over the phone. I reply that I will take the issue up with my credit card company. Which I have done. I was expecting to be charged between $100.00 & $150.00 dollars knowing that a smaller retail business has overhead etc. Please....stay with me on this...... I just purchased the correct lockset and deadbolt online for $80.00 INCLUDING shipping! The Brass one I brought in for re-keying was less than $60.00. I will return the mis-ordered product that they ordered as soon as my $240.00 is refunded. I have read all the Yelp reviews for Schwenk Locksmiths and it would seem fair to say that many people have noted their expertise as locksmiths. I also note the negative reviews reflecting the lack of civility they bestow upon their patrons. So stay with me on this..... When I tell you the charge was $240.00 I mean it was exactly $240.00. No cents. Perhaps my "Old Man" father (83) got taken with malice of forethought? I believe the proper term is "Elder Abuse". Epilogue: Do NOT support bad General Contractors Do NOT support bad Fathers Do NOT support bad Locksmiths. DO support good Contractors DO support good Fathers DO support good Locksmiths even if you have to drive a little further than Schwenks. I read the reviews before I called this place and thought I'd have to hold my tongue if I used this place. Well, I didn't feel I needed to do that today when I brought my sons bike in to cut the lock off. The key broke inside the lock. It was a U lock which meant it wouldn't be easy to deal with. I called the owner up and briefly told him what my issue was and he said he couldn't promise anything but he could look at it and tell me if he could help me. I showed up with bike in tow and lock still on the bike. He looked it over and spoke with another guy and they decided I would have to loose my lock in order to cut/remove it off the bike. He explained it very straight forward and I knew that it could be fixed. He quoted me $35.00 and although I thought was on a higher cost, I was happy he could help me today since my son rides that bike on campus. He is very smart and he lets you know it by the way he talks but, I was not offended and neither was my husband. He has a great sense of humor but you have go in with an open mind. At the owner's suggestion, my husband carried a malfunctioning lock into the store to have it repaired. He went on Saturday, and only a young man was there. The young man said he had fixed the lock and charged $18. My husband returned home and checked the lock before installing it in the door. He found that the lock would lock but not unlock. Because he was installing it in the only door to our garage, if he had installed it without first checking it, it would have been impossible to unlock the lock again without breaking the only window to get inside. I felt this was a serious concern for the next customer, and called to speak to the owner and warn him. (We weren't going to go all the way back to the store another time, so I didn't ask the owner to do anything further.) He insisted that the lock had worked perfectly when it left his shop, although he wasn't even there, and that all his people were fully qualified. He said in the history of his shop no lock had ever left his premises without being fully functional. He sort of started to yell that I was trying to blame him. I think this means at least one dangerously unqualified person will continue working at the store. Be warned! read more

Go here if you need your safe unlocked! I tried calling locksmiths to unlock my Honeywell safe that I had lost the key for but they charged close to $300 because they came to your residence. I was referred here by a locksmith. I just carried my safe into the store and he unlocked my safe in 5 minutes. They charged only $15! The employees were extremely nice too! Gene is skilled, experienced, and has charm about him that makes you want to go back. So much more personal feeling than going to get your key cut at an any old Home Depot. He was able to make me a key for a cabinet that I didn't have the key for just by seeing a picture of the lock face. I originally wanted to have him come onsite for the job but he advised me that it's way cheaper to just send a photo. I liked that he didn't try to make more money off my lack of knowledge.
