I was a little hesitant coming here based off the reviews but after meeting Mel and his mechanics I was at ease. I bought a 150cc moped and it runs like a champ. His mechanics walked me through the functions and how to do regular maintenance if I selected to do it on my own instead of bringing it to their shop. I had a brake issue, called Mel, he knew it was me calling because they store their customer data and had me bring the moped in the same day to have it fixed. This place runs on respect. The four star is because the overall quality of the vehicle and service is pending, as the vehicle was purchased very recently. It may be adjusted higher or lower depending on the after service. There are many selections of scooters and dirt bikes of various options, including navigation, usb port for charging phones and special lights. There are many color options as well, including those form their LA store that can be shipped over in a few short days. The manager is super awesome. Very friendly and knowledgeable, he delivered the scooter himself because it was after hours but he had made a promise to deliver it to us at a set date and time. They also help with registration, though you have to get the motorcycle license from the DMV. And costs seem relatively competitive, with deliveres to San Francisco less than $100. read more

We purchased a scooter there and have nothing but problems - It mostly doens't work. The throttle doesn't give any power until about 5 minutes into the slow crawl and now it just doesn't work at all. I bought my scooter here 6 years ago. I've always been treated well when I brought it in for servicing, and they even threw in the helmet on the initial sale! But my latest experience has restored my faith in superior customer service. One day last week it just went dead, as if the cables were off the battery. I called Mel and he said it probably was the fuse in the cable. I tried to fix it myself, but failed. I called him to tell him I'd have it towed in and while I was on the phone with AAA, he called to tell me he would pick it up himself! He did exactly that, and today when I went to pick it up, he only charged me for parts! When the time comes to buy another scooter, I'll be going back to Mel and Scooter Importers! This place certainly has great prices, but the scooter they sold us fell apart within two weeks, and as there was no warranty and it was a Chinese knock-off, there were few places that would help repair it. The muffler fell off within two weeks and 100 miles, and they had to order a new muffler (the process took two weeks) and they wouldn't put the muffler we bought onto the scooter. Including parts and labor, we've spent $500 on top of the purchase price ($699+taxes and fees) to keep this thing running. I wouldn't buy from this place again, and I wouldn't buy another discounted Chinese scooter. Few scooter repair shops are willing to work on them. read more

Awful. :-( They sold me a lemon and were unwilling to take any responsibility. I took the scooter in for them to look at and my license plate went missing. I had to file a police report which was a headache. Another visit, I thought the scooter sounded weird and they told me it was totally fine after doing an inspection. Luckily an honest staff person told me it was very dangerous and to not drive it, so I took it elsewhere and they confirmed what the man told me. The service is a scam. Basically Chinese mopeds are terrible, you will find screws just fall out, carburetors just stop working, etc, etc. In our case, the bolt holding the drive train came loose and nearly caused a fatal head-on crash. The other scam is they CLAIM to not have a delivery or pickup service for broken mopeds, yet the individual employees are happy to do it for $50 in cash. This is nonsense. Also, forget about getting any warranty honored. They nickel and dime everything - forget any customer service. Inexpensive is not always inexpensive, we have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on repairs and we have less 1000 miles on the moped over just 7 months! Buyer beware. read more

I bought a scooter here in November of 2009. The price was right, that's for sure--$1000 out the door, including TTL. The scooters themselves, however, are all Chinese knock-offs. On mine, the engine developed a rattle, which was caused by the plastic covering the air intake getting sucked into the engine. They had to buy a new part that took three weeks (literally! three weeks!) to come in; then, they realized their mechanic couldn't install it, so that took even longer. When they finally got around to fixing it, they realized it would cost me $300. Needless to say, I was pissed, but they did make it right by offering to let me have a new scooter, instead, for the price of tax, title and license, which was less than the $300 I would have otherwise had to spend. Another thing: they rarely answer the phone, so it can take a few days to get in touch with them. This is very annoying when your scooter is the only mode of transport available to you. Even though the price on my scoot was right, I have to say that my general frustration with the poor build quality of these scooters are barely compensated by the fun of riding it. The only good thing is the price. Problems found in my scooter are: 1. One connector pin popped out causing battery to not being charged. 2. Muffler fell off after 400 miles. 3. Need to rejet carb for engine to run properly. There are tons of information on the web about Chinese scooters and you should be able to make these cheap scooters to work if you are willing to wrench them down. But if you just want to buy one and ride it, I suggest Kymco/Honda/Yamaha. read more

The people who work at this place are really nice, but I'm afraid that's all that they have going for them. Their product is crap. I bought a BMS Evo Vespa-esque looking scooter in Nov. 2009. It was really pretty looking, the price was right, and I fell in love with it. Turns out, you get what you pay for, because I pretty immediately started having problems with it. The alarm on it was faulty and began going off spontaneously WHILE I WAS RIDING IT and had to be replaced. The idle had to be adjusted numerous times because the engine would SHUT OFF when stopped at a red light or stop sign. The battery does not hold a charge well and I have to hook it up to a trickle charger EVERY NIGHT. Plastic parts like the seat latch have broken off so that I cannot utilize the storage under my seat. The accelerator does not always work properly. The list goes on... Service for the scooter was "free" every time, but I had to pay $60 for towing of the scooter to their garage in Alameda at least 4 times, a couple times I even rode the piece of crap though the Webster Tube for servicing, talk about terrifying! After all this, the darn thing still doesn't work right. I've just accepted that it is prone to spontaneous engine cut off and erratic functioning and tried to make due for my short daily commute from Oakland to Berkeley. How I have gotten 1400 miles on it this year is nothing short of a miracle... A dangerous, frustrating unreliable miracle. I've been saving my money and am buying a name brand non Chinese knock off scooter soon. Learn from my mistake and don't be dazzled by the good looks and low price of these vehicles. read more

I stupidly purchased a Lance scooter online back 2008. When it was delivered to my door, I had no idea how much hell i had to go through to get it working. Worst of all, the online store went out of business and I was left on my own. Thanks to the Scooter Importer, LLC I am very fortunate to get my scooter fixed and running! Well, it's been a few weeks and I'm now in love with my scooter. It's a champ! I stopped by Scooter Importer today because of a squeaky brake. They checked it out and diagnosed dust and dirt on the brake rotor. It was wiped clean and no more squeak. A brake cleaning spray was recommended. They didn't have any on hand and offered to reimburse my purchase cost. I could not be happier with my purchase and service I've received so far. read more

My 2nd time leaving a review of this place. These guys took care of me again while buying a 2nd family scooter. This guy Yousuf and his Dad are just the nicest people you will ever meet. I actually had a problem with the 1st scooter, and they fixed it up in no time, and I was back out on the road. This goes to show their commitment to the products they sell, and keeping the customer happy. It's amazing, as this guy Yousuf began this business right out of high school. I've bought 3 scooters from them this month. They are honest and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this place!

The atv I purchased here is already falling apart. The second day of riding it the chain guard flew off. The chain is now coming off the sprockets. The lights the atv comes with blew out the battery which I had to pay to replace. The engine is rattling the whole bike. The assembly of the bike was lazy. My engine is missing screws which causes it to sit low. I'm not sure what kind of bikes they are selling but I'm telling you now, if you want quality DO NOT COME HERE!!!!! However, if you want something from Matilda's dads car lot, come here! Smh I say if you really want a dirtbike or ATV just get a brand name one from an actual motorcycle lot with better payments/financing and save yourself the trouble. Biggest mistake ever was coming here to get a bike. The loan company they use is a SCAM with ridiculous amount of interest. They'll try to sell you on the 90 day payoff option but the company is so BS that there is NO 90 day rebate. The finance company sticks you with the interest anyways! read more

So this guy has two shops that are side by side. Parking is difficult it is downtown. One shop has the scooters, and street legal stuff, it was open. And the other shop next door has the dirt/pit or non street legal bikes. Fairly clean. My issue is, that his pricing is all over the place. He runs a craigslist ad, stating that he will meet or beat any local Dealer! He flat out won't. He advertised a 70cc bike for $599, however he wanted $699. When I told him about his ad, he did agree to go to $599. But ABC bikes down the street, would sell the same bike for $500 out the door, gassed up and ready to go, with Certificate of Manufacture. He wouldn't even try to close the gap on the price. So I went back to ABC bikes, and paid $500, and left with a running bike in 30 minutes. That extra $250 I saved that's 1/3rd off. If you say your going to price match. You should do it. read more

If you rate on service - you can't seriously give them anything else than 5 stars. The guys who run this place understand the importance of serving the customer, I purchased a scooter from them in 2012 and within 3 months I had to return it because it was not meeting my expectations. Here is where the difference comes into play - they told me to pick another scooter and did not charge me anything. (I don't recall signing a contract that promised me a 100% guarantee). Since then I've had some issues with the new scooter, but they are always helpful and reasonably priced. Most recently, my scooter was leaking so I asked them to tow it in the shop for a look. They towed it, fixed it and charged me nothing. Nothing. Alameda is a close knit town, with great small businesses in the community. Scooter Importer is in that same class. read more

I took my barely running 2008 Lance Vespa scooter for service to Scooter Importer and received quick and friendly service. Their prices are VERY reasonable and they are able to diagnose problem areas on scooters very quickly. For example, a diagnostic costs $75, but the price is applied toward the cost of the service. I worked primarily with Oscar, and he communicated very well with me about what was happening with my scooter. I would recommend this repair shop to anyone looking to get their scooter fixed. However, if you're looking for 2 wheeled transportation, just buy a real motorcycle and learn how to ride it ... cheap chinese scooters are generally a disappointment and (as you can see from previous Yelp reviews) break down frequently. read more

He recommended the 2014 Lance Cali Classic 150 and told me ALL the specs on it, more than I would have ever imagined to know. He was honest, and told me to do more research and shop around a bit more. I left being more confident in my scooter shopping and ended up with a used 2013 Lance Cali Classic 125, which was $1000 cheaper than the one I saw at the shop. DANGEROUSLY IMCOMPETENT MECHANICS! I brought my motorcycle in for a flat tire and tire change. Sounds simple right? Instead after leaving their business the tube had not been properly seated. If I had taken the bike out of 1st gear I would have crashed and potentially injured myself. The mechanic knew this but still let me drive off the lot. He falsely "claimed" that it took 2-3 weeks for seating to occur. He said let me try again and I am a reasonable guy so gave them a second try. Instead no improvement. Mechanic claimed I had bought the wrong tube and hence the problem. I had the bike towed to Fremont Suzuki. I had the correct tube and tire however in trying to fix it at Scooter importer they had ruined the tire. I now had to buy a new tire and pay to have this service completed. All in all, a flat tire costs me almost $500! I asked for a entire refund for the $150 I had paid to have the tires changed because not only did they not fix the problem but had to buy a replacement tire they had damaged for another $163. They said the manager would have to call me. He hasn't in almost 2 weeks and hence the review. Unless you are the type of person that enjoys broken bones, I would not support this local business! The mechanic gave false information twice and was confirmed inaccurate at Fremont Suzuki. Definitely warning parents if you are buying any motorsport vehicle for a child. If you don't die on one of this you will constantly have to bring it back to them for repairs because no one else but them will put their hands on this dead traps. It's a scam 100%, you're buying from them something that will constantly break and will constantly need repairs that only them can do at absurd prices. You ll spend am average of $500 to $1000 a year in repair and your brand new Chinese scooter that you buy from them will start breaking after 6 months and will keep doing so. If you don't die because a piece comes off while you drive you will just lose a lot and a lot of money.
