This review is based on approximately five years of dealing with Scott Management Company as the management company selected by our HOA. My experience has been remarkably consistent: dated processes, poor follow through, defensive communication and an approach to homeowners that too often feels adversarial rather than service oriented. The distinction matters because homeowners generally do not choose the management company. The HOA does. That creates an unusual relationship in which the people living with the consequences of the company's performance are not necessarily the people deciding whether the company keeps the contract. After five years, my impression is that Scott Management understands that dynamic very well. Routine communication can be unnecessarily difficult. Questions that should receive straightforward answers can instead produce curt or dismissive responses. Problems often require repeated follow up. And when something becomes complicated, the burden of keeping the matter moving has repeatedly felt as though it falls on the homeowner rather than the company being paid to manage it. My experience during a mold remediation issue was particularly revealing. When you're dealing with a problem affecting your home, you don't expect a property management company to perform miracles. You do expect organization, timely communication, competent coordination and some basic understanding that the person on the other end of the email is dealing with a problem in the place where they live. Instead, I repeatedly encountered communication that felt procedural, defensive and at times needlessly quippy. The experience reinforced a pattern I had already observed over years rather than feeling like an isolated failure. That's ultimately my problem with Scott Management. It isn't one dramatic incident. It's the accumulation of small administrative failures, unnecessary friction and an apparent lack of urgency that eventually tells you something about the culture of an organization. Property management is not simply collecting assessments, forwarding notices and explaining procedure. The actual product is stewardship. It is maintaining buildings, coordinating vendors, communicating with residents, keeping records, anticipating problems and making an inherently complicated relationship between homeowners and an association function better. In my experience, Scott Management too often adds friction to that relationship instead of removing it. I understand that a management company works at the direction of an association and its board and not every decision belongs to management. I'm therefore deliberately not blaming Scott Management for decisions outside its authority. I am reviewing the things a management company does control: responsiveness, organization, communication, professionalism, follow through and the way homeowners are treated when something goes wrong. I would not voluntarily choose this company to manage a property I owned and if I were serving on a board evaluating management companies, I would strongly recommend doing extensive due diligence before hiring them. I filed a noise complaint through Scott Management and explicitly stated in writing that I did not want my information shared with the other party. Three days later, Management forwarded my complaint to that person anyway -- including my name, phone number, email, and video evidence -- with instructions to "work directly" with me. When I emailed Management objecting to the disclosure, they never responded. If you file a complaint through this company, be aware your identity and contact information may be shared with the person you're complaining about, even if you ask them not to. read more

I cannot speak for the entire Scott Management Team, however I have had nothing but excellent management from Ariel Hess with the company. Scott manages several townhome complexes in Marina Del Rey, and everyone I have spoken with continues to praise Ariel. He is quick to respond to any request. He researches before answering, and has always been fair in his assessments. Our complex is well maintained and there is a sense he cares. While it's true they are not responsible for homeowner conflicts, they are the often first line of contact, and their responses have zero empathy, sound sarcastic and condescending, and reeks of corporate training from the 1990s. Under their management and failure to de-escalate situations, my HOA is fighting three lawsuits at the same time. Most of my interactions with Scott Management have revolved around pet policies, and almost every time, I'm met with a response that reads like "Let us forward your message to the HOA board. As a homeowner, I cannot believe I just experienced this with my HOA company. We received an email to pick up parking permits from the HOA office. My husband went to go pick it up and was right away informed by front desk Wendy that an approval was needed. This was mistake number one, as no approval is needed and the email does not state any approval would be needed simply, to bring a check to obtain the parking permit. When your staff, Jennifer came back out, she was yelling and naturally drew other staff members out and all surrounded my husband. Your staff, Jennifer continued to say that she gave my husband the 2025 parking permit which was untrue. I kept hearing her say that she gave the parking permit and finally it was realized that she actually did not because it was inside the office. I could understand that this was a misunderstanding and/ or miscommunication but, you could have seriously placed my husband in danger. While on the phone with my husband, two men approached due to your staff raising their voice and automatically attacked my husband verbally. This should have never happened. I am very concerned that instead of an apology, your staff, Jennifer continues to send email attacking my husband instead of apologizing for the miscommunication. I have never experienced such blatant disrespect and from a company that takes $450 a month from me. Take responsibility for your actions and your staff's actions. I had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever encountered with Alisa. She was extremely condescending, dismissive, and made me feel as if I was bothering her for simply asking basic questions about my HOA proposal. When I tried to clarify the situation, she responded with, "I don't know what you don't understand, I just told you," which is incredibly rude and unprofessional for someone in her position. She offered zero guidance, contradicted information previously given by management, and treated me like I was stupid for trying to understand a very important and time-sensitive issue. Considering homeowners rely on HOA staff for accurate information during emergencies, this level of disrespect is unacceptable. I left the call feeling more confused than before, and only after speaking with an actual board member did I learn that most of what she told me was inaccurate. Every nightmare you can think of when it comes to property management is Scott management in a nutshell. First off, they never respond to emails or answer the phone or return calls. And I'm not kidding, literally NEVER. Second off, how RUDE Gilda and Elise are is shocking. I'm a tenant and I went to the office (because no one ever answers calls or emails) to find out why my car was towed. Elise informed me that I "shouldn't even be up here" for one and 2 my permit was not displayed. Okay - upon contacting the tow company, they were kind enough to show me pictures they took right before the tow which clearly displayed my permit. Then I thought hmmmmm maybe I parked in the wrong spot, let me check my lease. Guess what? I was in my right spot. So, to show Elise evidence of my permit being displayed along with the police report stating my car was towed due to no permit displayed, imagine my shock when she laughed and shrugged her shoulders and said "I don't know what to tell you, ask the tow people. Sounds like they shouldn't have towed your car then". I inform her that the tow company responded to THEIR call. Elise then again laughs and shrugs her shoulders. I calmly ask how to go about being reimbursed. Elise smirks and says "we ain't reimbursing you anything. Again you not even supposed to be up here you're a renter". This place is a joke and I cannot WAIT to sue the living daylights out of them. At this point it's not even about the money. It's the principle. The neighborhood is so bad, that if I park outside the gate and on the street I'm risking my car getting broken into or stolen like other tenants have had happen to them. We had ceiling leaks and it took two weeks for Scott Management to have plumber come to fix it and it's been another two weeks that we've been waiting Scott management to patch the drywall. It's been opened together w clean out in garage which generates lots of dust from ceiling and smell from clean out. Been sending so many emails and calls, but Steven doesn't answer to any of the emails for last two weeks and not answering the phone. Wow! I found this update below that I apparently never published and the info was referencing something from 2017! So I'm back on here again with the dissatisfaction with Scott Management! We're back again with a roofing issue. Last week when it started raining, I noticed in my sister's room that water was dripping in the window area and we were like ok not again! Scott Management was contacted and alerted to report a water coming in last week before the big rain this week 3/14/23 so they could get ahead of the situation. They lied and said someone was out here on the site and that they would come by our unit but didn't. Well like the last time in 2017, they had a lackadaisical response which which resulted in deluge of water coming in endlessly that wet the carpet up from the window to the bedroom door, new leaking on the ceiling by the adjoining wall, that caused a large mirror to fall down in the middle of the night that scared the BJesus out of me! Contacted SM again and the best response from that that wonderful, capable and so efficient Margaret said was and I quote "The roofer is aware of the problem with your unit. We have multiple units leaking at this time. When the rain stops the roofer will start on repairs. He is an independent contractor and we do not make his schedule. This has been reported to him. We can at this time open the walls and remove the padding and may be able to direct the water into a bucket or trash can until the roof is repaired." Now does this make since to tear up a wall to put trash cans and pails to catch water? HOW ABOUT FIXING THE PROBLEM BEFORE CALLING RESTORATION! We went through that before and it was horrible. It took weeks to get everything back. I get others are experiencing similar situation but that doesn't excuse SM from getting things handled better. We called in enough time but like the last time, nothing! I asked don't you have more than one roofer? What management company doesn't have more than one resource. Question totally unanswered and her only resolution is to get the restoration team here. IT HASN'T RAINED IN A COUPLE OF DAYS...HOW ABOUT NOW? No estimated time when someone will be here and another rain due in next week (week of the 3/20/23). Carpet is smelling now! We're in a situation of possible mold and a health and safety issue. Just like in 2017, non-action! I'm pretty sure they do not do this to any residences in 90210 or any other areas that lack POC! The only reason I ended up in court is because of the same complaint I've had for years with them...lack of and/or non communication! I own a townhouse in Marina del Rey and Scott Management recently took over managing our complex of 231 units. My tenants have requested numerous times to have a tree trimmed in front of their unit because sap dripping on their patio furniture and entry gate to both me and Scott Management. Scott Management told them the request had to come from me. I requested back to Scott Management that this needs to be done. They are trimming trees through out the property, but not this one. I went to your office at Torrance on 9.29.2023 to request a meeting with Manager but none of them in the office. Yesterday, she forwarded me a same inspection report yesterday without telling me when the contractor can come to resolve the issue. When I ask her when the contractor can come to fix the problem, I failed to get an update from her via email or phone. (front desk told Me she is in office today) I am writing to express my continued concern regarding the unresolved issues with the ventilation system in my apartment (5917 Armaga spring) and the entire building. As you are aware (report from inspector on August 2, 2023), the problem arose following the recent reroofing project, which has significantly impacted on the living conditions for all the people staying in that building. The most pressing issue we are currently facing is the persistent strong odor that permeates my apartment, particularly when my neighbor next door is cooking. This problem has not only made it uncomfortable to live in the building but has also raised health concerns for residents, who have reported experiencing breathing difficulties due to the deteriorating air quality. I am deeply dissatisfied with the lack of progress in addressing this matter. Despite the initial inspection revealing improper installation of the ventilation system, and assurances from the property management that a contractor would be engaged to rectify the issue, it has come to my attention that the contractor has not responded to the property manager's request for service. Furthermore, my attempts to obtain updates on the situation from our property manager, she have been met with no update from contractor. It is disheartening to be left in the dark regarding such a critical matter that directly affects our living conditions and well-being. I have requested arbitration over these billing disputes and despite having a clear disagreement with my board over the responsibility of these invoices, Scott Management is refusing to honor my request for arbitration over these billing disputes. I have been trying to replace a gate pass for two weeks. They don't even answer the phone like a responsible business . I finally got to talk to someone yesterday. And he didn't call back. Last year they tried to squeeze money out of me for a leak that was clearly in the common area beneath the floor. My experiences have been exactly like the other negative reviews here. They don't answer their extensions, do not respond to most emails, curt answers, and no help finding solutions. Their biggest problem is the total lack of communication. What's interesting though is this all depends on where you live. Friends in Redondo and Torrance whose HOA uses Scott have only good things to say. Their contact person is Ariel. If you live in LA, Carson, Harbor City it's just the opposite. Then you get Margaret who never answers her phone, but her VM directs you to her assistant who also doesn't answer her phone. I don't know if that has something to do with property values. They never told us that they were no longer the management company either and now my HOA payments for months are missing resulting in my account going to collections. So knowing that I was going to have to call my property management and deal with my issue just put my mood in a funk! Scott Management is the community PM where my wife and I just moved into (1800 PCH), and our experience with the assigned PM team (Ariel & Ivy) so far has been wonderful. From the moment my wife and I initially purchased a unit in the community, we were impressed with how beautiful the PM maintain the common grounds. Needless to say, my wife and I had many questions and requests and both Ariel & Ivy have been very responsive and patient in helping us. We had to deal with a lot of both good and bad PMs over the years, but I think none of them measures up to Ariel & Ivy. We cannot say enough good things about them. Thank you, Ariel & Ivy! read more

Margaret Gonella has not contacted me once in over a year in regards to getting us a reserved parking spot. We pay $500 dollars a month in HOA fees, and cannot get a call back, an email or anything to give us an update. Where are my $500 going to if I cannot get the respect of a response! When I spoke to her in person, I knew that she had not read ANY of my emails, because if she had... she'd know what I was asking about when I finally managed to speak with her in person since she was at our location with a group of people. Either Margaret is showing favoritism in who she responds to, or she never put us on the waiting list. We have been asking to be put on that list for 1.5 years already. Multiple people in this complex hold a lot of similar feelings of horrible customer service. It is one thing to be overwhelmed and short staffed, its another to treat homeowners with condescending attitude and patronize them when all you are asking for is an update. If things continue I will be following up with legal action with the rest of the homeowners who also have pictures/ emails/ and stories of bad service. After she blatantly ignores my phone calls and emails for over 6 weeks on an issue she then sends me a threat for a fine about the same thing id been asking her about. Just let that sink in. She took no ownership, offered no apology or explanation and tells me if i fix it now she wont fine me. I told her i wasnt paying anything...hell i should be fining her. So ill tell yelp the same thing I told her. This company needs to be more responsive to the communties they serve, homeowners are not adult babysitters obligated to track them down to ensure they get things done and im beyond tired of them. All units were either forced to move out or stay in their units and live in this filthy situation until repairs are done. The fact that this company is inconsiderate about this kind of living situation is beyond all of us. How is it OK to live without a kitchen?!? How is it OK to live without your bathroom and shower or even a bed to sleep on??!?! And it has been weeks of this! Instead of speeding up the process to get everyone back in their units and lives, Scott Management is dragging their feet, not being responsive, lying with the information they give and holding up the work that should've been done by now.
