If you don't mind being rushed through a high-end french dinner by a rude manager, Scoundrel is for you. If you don't mind seeing pornography (ala Penthouse or Playboy) plastered on the walls of one of the bathrooms, Scoundrel is for you. My short assessment: Excellent: ambiance, drinks, food, and service (Taylor) Abysmal: restaurant manager (Kenzi) More detail: A high end French restaurant is meant to be an experience savored by all 5 senses, but due to the manager (Kenzi), it was an "experience" we will never forget. Our experience: My wife and I arrived 5 min early for our Saturday 5:45 pm reservation and were seated by the kind hostess. Our server (Taylor) promptly gave us the low down and took our cocktail orders. 5:45 - 6:45 (for context): we ordered 2 of the most expensive appetizers and 4 premier cocktails (total $114 before tip) At 6:45, we were about to order $150 worth of entrees when the manager (Kenzi) approached our table and brashly informed us (paraphrased) "you have 1 hour left, and we'd like to get your entree orders so this table can be ready for our next guests at 7:45. Resy is clear that you have 2 hours, and we only have 60 seats here, so we need to move things along". (Note: I made this reservation over the phone with Kenzi just 2 days earlier, and she never mentioned a 2 hour time limit) Shocked, we politely asked Taylor for the check and apologized for having to leave (citing Kenzi's rude behavior). We gave Taylor a nice tip because he was doing a great job despite his manager's rudeness. At 7pm, we left upset and disappointed. Thankfully, the evening was redeemed at a nearby Belgian restaurant. A restaurant manager can make or break a restaurant. Message to Chef Joe Cash: If you still ascribe to this aspiration for Scoundrel from your GVLToday interview ("It's not pretentious. It's not forced. It's just this natural, organic, really fun, just simple experience of good food, great fun, great fellowship kind of feel."), then I suggest hiring a new restaurant manager. Kenzi will be the downfall of any hopes for a "Cash Group" of restaurants. With a few minor adjustments to Scoundrel, you will be a GVL restaurant icon. We really looked forward to having dinner at Scoundrel, since we waited until after the holidays to book a reservation. The menu is fairly limited, but we had a chance to look it over before we came to the restaurant. We were seated at a booth table, which we requested. The ambiance was dark, and well "Scoundrel-ish". The restaurant restrooms are very funny, artistic and reminded me of the Pigalle neighborhood in Paris, which is a bit raunchy, so know this going in (if you are offended by naked photos, don't use the restroom). The food and service were really fantastic. Our kind and helpful waiter, David, was very well-versed in the menu, and made suggestions as we asked questions. We wanted to order a Kir Royale cocktail (not on the menu), and we were able to get it. My husband ordered the cabbage entree, which I wasn't sure of, but it was absolutely outstanding (the cabbage was delicious and the sauce on the side paired well with my duck fat fries). I ordered the Coulotte Steak Frites, medium rare, it was sublime, as was the melted Broccoli Rabe. This restaurant is different from any other in Greenville, as it not only offers superb food, but an experience as well. We will be back. read more

This new downtown spot is very cool. Ambiance is very sleek and modern with comfortable booth seating along one side, and tables on the other. Bar area is small but can accommodate people at both the bar top, and some seating along the wall. The menu is a bit limited, and a little oddly designed to understand, but our server offered the information we needed. In the end, our group of 4 decided to share the Tomahawk RibEye...and whopping $205 for a 50+ oz steak...but with the accompanying sides that were included, and sauces to add to the fare, it was ample for us, and became a bargain compared to other individual options. Steaks were a feature here, and most were in the $70-85 range. There are also oyster, caviar options that were quite expensive to me! Service was outstanding...food was excellent. For my wife's 40th birthday we came into town and selected scoundrel for her birthday dinner. From the beginning the mood in the establishment is perfectly set, with low lighting in the building focused lighting at your table. The staff from entry to table is top notch. All extremely polite and professional. We got to enjoy having Erik(Eric) guide us on the menu items. Extremely professional and just an overall good person. My wife son and I enjoyed the escargots as an appetizer. The earns and Gruyère paired well with them and the bread was perfectly crisped. The amberjack was excellent. Perfectly flakey with a great sear. The garlic cream sauce and eggplant made an excellent perfect bit with it all. The Coulotte and burger were perfectly cooked and the frites are amazing. The burger sauce is out of this world and is a perfect match in the burger or as a dipping sauce for the frites. A chocolate cake was brought to the table as a surprise along with a cronut we ordered. By far the best slice of cake ive been served and the cronut is by far my favorite sweet treat ive ever had. All around the experience was fantastic. All of the staff were great and we really appreciated their hard work, especially all of the post storm issues. We went to Scoundrel to celebrate my husband's Professor Emeritus award. The atmosphere was intriguing. However, tables were too close to have a private conversation also very dark which we don't mind. Right off the bat they tried to pushed their tomahawk beef thing, the most expensive thing on the menu. I don't/can't eat beef and once the waiter found that out, service wasn't very good. I had the Scottish salmon and it was excellent and my husband had the oysters and said they were good. The reason for the 3 and not 4 is the same as someone else mentioned. Food was excellent! Three of us enjoyed sharing delicious appetizers of Caesar's salad, crab, Duck Liver mousse was outstanding! Such a surprise as I have never had it. A beautiful sea bass with a crisp outside, and various desserts(croissant was my favorite) It was a wonderfully relaxed evening sharing food and wine. It was my birthday celebration. Service was outstanding with waiter giving perfect wine suggestions for various foods. The atmosphere was inviting and a beautiful feeling as we entered the restaurant at 5pm. Went for a business dinner with a couple of colleagues from out of town. Our first time to Scoundrel. We had the beef tartar and it was prepared table side by Tyler our server. I had the spiced chicken chassuer & it was fantastic. My colleges had the ribeye with an poive they raised about it. Finished with cronut. So excellent. We all agreed: Tyler was one of the best servers we've ever had. I was so excited when I saw this restaurant come into town. It is delicious! The fries are to die for! We had good service. The restaurant is very nice. I did take away stars due to the bathroom decor. It is all naked women. It's extremely graphic and inappropriate. I would not feel comfortable for my boyfriend/husband to go into a bathroom that's just plastered with photos of naked women. It's unnecessary. I cannot imagine if I had a child and knew they saw that. Please change the bathroom decor and you'll be a perfect restaurant for all to visit. What a treat! Welcomed with a smile and quickly transported to a French bistro in our minds. Trey, our server, was an absolute delight. He was knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions. We started with apéritifs. The Dorian Gray was dreamy. We then opened dinner with a baguette (crispy outside, warm and fluffy inside) served with sweet corn butter and a perfect Caesar salad. Loved the fine texture and spiciness of the breadcrumbs. For entrees we shared the branzino for 2 (Julia Childs would have approved), the duck, and the summer squash. I dreamed about the fish and squash last night. Not gonna lie. Such harmony in the flavors and textures. Finished with chef's grandmother's chocolate cake and felt like I knew her with the first bite. We also had the salted cantaloupe sorbet and honest to goodness, it felt like a summer garden in my mouth. It ended the night perfectly with my last sips of Bordeaux Blanc. The detail in the serving pieces were a highlight for me; inviting me in like i was in someone's home. Oh, and the storied art! I wanna know more about Scoundrel. We went to Scoundrel on Friday. We did like the atmosphere; the service was great. The dishware and the silverware were super nice and certainly special to see in a restaurant. The beef tartar was fabulous. We shared the Branzino fish for two and had the squash as the side dish. It was delicious; well seasoned, maybe a little bit too creamy/buttery. The dessert options were only verbally presented to us (we were full), but none of them sounded European/French or intriguing to us. The neighbor table had one that looked like a brownie. There is maybe room for improvement on the dessert side of things. The espresso we ordered was watered down a bit. Other than that, it was a great experience. Greenville has one upscale restaurant more in town! read more
