Based on the romantic visage of the Gorgeous Spanish Tiles sitting a top a perfectly manicured hill, I didn't foresee our experience being anything less than pleasant. Contradictory to my expectations, it was not pleasant at all due to one reason: Eggs. I ordered the "Fried Egg Sammy" and my mother ordered the "Jumbo lump crab cakes". My mother had to send her eggs back twice because although she asked for them over medium, they were fried hard, twice. When I finally bit into my sandwich, I realized my eggs were literally hard boiled eggs tucked between a sandwich ridden with a tangy mayonnaise. I felt that instead of eating an avocado breakfast sandwich, I was eating a potato salad sandwich. I humbly brought this to the server's attention and the manager. The server was "fake nice" and I could tell she was a bit frazzled. I humbly apologized for bringing this up but the eggs were completely inedible. The manager discounted 20% from my meal, and was very apologetic and kind. However, I suggested to him that for such a gorgeous Victorian revived atmosphere, the food should correlate. read more

This place confused me. What are you, Scout? The drinks were good. They have a collection of relatively new (and worthy) spirits from makers like Tempus Fugit and St. George behind the bar, which generally inspires confidence. And the bartender knew by heart the recipe to a rather obscure drink that I ordered off menu. But, at the same time, the cocktail list presented to me at the bar veered in the direction of boozey candy dressed up in coupe glasses, and one of the recipes specifically listed Seagrams Vodka as an ingredient. What? Like. I mean. ...What? The menu boasts seasonal American fare that implied a certain know-how for putting flavors together. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich--not a particularly prestigious dish compared to the rest--but it was extremely tasty and really impressed. The perfectly-seasoned stewed tomato sauce was a highlight and the chicken was done perfectly. But, at the same time, that sandwich was absurdly huge--the kind of portion I would expect at a Bennigan's. And my side dish was this extremely strange barley salad. Clever idea, but whatever it was seasoned with tasted very distinctly like olive brine. It tasted like someone had literally tossed the barley in canned olive brine. I am rather confident, in fact, that that's precisely what happened. When my partner asked how I felt about this, I said "I feel like my martini is underdone." Despite this being extremely funny, he did not laugh. This was also disappointing. So is the food here good? um. Yes? Maybe? It depends? Lastly, the physical space of the restaurant is very light and cozy. It's quite well done. It feels good to be there and to kick back a bit. But, at the same time, they were playing music at sports bar volume and, as if wanting to extend the homage, there was a massive flatscreen TV over the bar...playing a sports channel. It was a really distracting and unpleasant interruption, not to mention extremely out of place in an interior that otherwise conforms to the minimalist, modern interior we've come to expect from a place that has both braised scallops with kale and fancy-pantsy mac n cheese on the menu. I found it hard to hold my attention on anything other than the music and the TV. It made for a visually and aurally disruptive experience at what would have otherwise been a very pleasant spot. This place has a lot of fans, and I hear their brunch is very good. If that sounds like your thing, Scout might be for you. But while I was there, it just felt like the place was having an identity crisis. read more

I visited on Friday evening. The restaurant is much larger than it looks. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was exquisite. I enjoyed my crab cakes and my cocktail. Both are definitely craveable! I took off one star because for a Friday evening, I was surprised at how many young kids were there. It felt like I was at family night at Chucky Cheese! Another 10 minutes tick by before our server mumbles an appology and takes our drink order. Knowing that we've been waiting almost an hour, the drinks still take an inordinate amount of time. He even came back after five minutes to tell us the drinks were still being made. Perhaps he should have refocused his efforts on having the bartender prioritize our drink order. We loved it in first 5 visits. Only problem has been the hostess. There is a hostess problem in this town. I saw this nasty attitude in many restaurants. I don't blame the restaurant for this because this is pretty much you have to work with. What I can't understand is how this hostess can live with herself. Well another problem was the bartender. Our church is two blocks from this new joint so we dropped in after church for brunch. I was stoked that there was no wait!!! That never happens on Sunday. The atmosphere is beautiful. It would be a great spot for dinner or cocktails. It is VERY large so I imagine having a group outing would be a breeze. I hear it's pretty new and I think they have some tweaking to do on the brunch menu - odd portions and nothing super unique- but the atmosphere, service and cocktails are definitely worth a visit! In terms of food-- Scout was good, but not worth a return visit. Too many other great food options to return for food that was unimpressive, drinks that were ok--but not great--and service that was subpar. It's a very large floor space, and they were completely understaffed. Being told that the only available seats are at the bar, yet 2 hours later the restaurant is still only quarter filled--indicates exceptionally poor management. Meh, go to Poor Hendrix, or even better, Club Ticonderoga--excellent food, amazing drinks, and exceptional service? Time, fun--and money--much better spent. read more

Scout has developed quite an ambiance for a restaurant the Oakhurst area. The interior is spacious; you don't feel like you're imposing on the table next to you. If there happens to be a dinner rush, they have games to entertain you and your party while waiting (bocce, corn hole, quoits/indoor shuffleboard, etc). The menu offers a wide variety of appetizer and entree selections, inspired by an elevated awareness of technique and depth, particularly regarding their seafood offerings. Notable items include the fried cauliflower with horseradish cream accompaniment, the snapper (the skin texture resembles the crispiest of fried chicken without the guilt), the gastrique for the duck is exquisite, and the shallot/caper/cream sauce with mussels will leave you desperate for more bread to sop its excellence. And of course, as most people wonder of any restaurant, the level of care and service the staff provide do not leave anything lacking. Even upon finishing our meals, the owner Chris made it a point to verify that our experience left nothing wanting. We will definitely return. read more

My sister and I decided to try this place for dinner. We had the Rainbow Trout and Shrimp pasta dish and it was delicious! Our service was excellent as well. We sat on the patio and we did have a problem with flies swarming us once the food came out, so I would suggest perhaps a remedy for that. Maybe some citronella candles? Sunday Brunch review: fantastic! Arrived around 12:45, busy with plenty of tables though. The drink menu looked amazing, though we were not drinking. Ordered the pancakes, bacon and the Alamo (biscuits and gravy with chorizo) and everything was top notch good! Food and setting are too good to let bad service get in the way. The people are individually fine and working hard, but there are times when Scout seems terribly and consistently (5+ visits) understaffed. Decatur is pulling for you to get this right - but particularly at your price point, the service needs to be much, much better. Cool spot - good food - spotty service at best. Friday date night. Tried to change the plan when I saw the grubby window panes on the front door but my date was really drawn to the deck under the trees. Also felt the multiple unbussed tables were a bad sign, but she insisted. The server seemed really friendly, asked us what we wanted to drink, told us there was no rush and then disappeared. Fortunately other servers were able to get an order in for us. The hanger steak was under-cooked versus my definition of medium, but tasted good. Fries were crazy salty but got also got gobbled up. Really good potato wedges (didn't know the steak came with fries) and whatever those little cabbagy vegetables are and a damn good Paloma. A super-huge spider fell out of the tree onto the table, which they can't help, but there were also ants and roaches crawling around our feet. I really wanted to get out of there but the server's back-ups and the hostess/bussers were resisting eye contact. So I got up and found our server inside and asked her for the bill. She came out and said she thought someone had brought it to us. Pretty cool that she can read minds. She knew we didn't want any dessert or another round. My date called me a grumpy pants until our stomachs started growling and churning. We were both urgently seeking bathrooms the next day. Giving three stars because it looks cool from the street and everyone else there seemed really happy. But, no fricking way would I go back. read more

I ate at this restaurant on April 18, 2018. The food was good and the service was great. I paid for my bill with cash and as I got in my car, the manager came running out asking if I paid my bill. I informed him that I paid my waitress with cash. The manager apologized and walked away. I called the restaurant on April 19, 2018 and spoke to the owner. I informed him that the incident was a bit unsettling and I asked what would have caused the manager to assume that I didn't pay my bill. He said, "Well, I'm sure he had a perfectly good reason". I asked, "Can you please find out and let me know the reason?". The owner took my contact information and I have never received a call from him. I will not return to this restaurant. read more

Good experience, ruined by petty billing incident. I have to give it to them that the atmosphere and the food was really good. Only irritation was that we had a great appetizer of mussels. Asked for an extra basket of bread to sop up the sauce. They charged us $ 1.50 for the extra bread. Seems pretty petty when my bill was $ 100 just for my dinner and a bottle of wine that I had bought for the table. Just made them seem like money grubbers. For an entrée I had the ricotta & collard green dumplings, the mussels for the appetizer. Both really good dishes. Went to a amazing event last night called liquor on the lawn. Music was great, food was awesome. I'm not a yelper but felt this warranted a quick review. The bar men at this place are clown shoes. As it took almost 10 min Every visit to the bar to just be acknowledged, I took the time to watch. I saw everything from being inhospitable to guests, bare handing ice and garnish's, reusing unsanitized glass wear from a top the bar for new drinks and eye rolling at people who asked for your less crafty concoctions. We went to Scout on a special occasion, when a band played on their property for an event called "Liquor on the Lawn." It was Her Majesty's Request, a British rock tribute band. Unfortunately, background music also was playing over speakers on their patio. We asked our server if the background music could be turned off so we could hear the band. She said she would check. When she came back, she said it was not possible because they would have to "turn off everything else." Presumably, she was referring to the lights strung up over the patio. But it was light outside and there was no need for them. And is there no way to adjust the volume on the patio speakers? Why have a band in the first place if you're not going to treat their music with respect? read more

The best patio in Decatur for a nice dinner! Had the shrimp creole which was outstanding with the creamy pearl cous cous. Truly the worst dining experience I've ever had. Our sever Sonya K was visibly bothered when my sisters and I entered the restaurant. Sonya K did not greet us when coming up to our table. She placed waters on our table then rudely asked if we were ready to order. She barely checked in with us the entire time we were eating. Sonya K was pointedly kind, welcoming, and maintained proper social decorum with the other patrons at the tables around ours. She did not provide my 2 year old with the kids coloring menu and crayons that the restaurant had up front yet provided them to the children seated at the table next to ours. When it was time for us to leave, we asked for the check and Sonya K tossed our check over the barrier of our booth rather than coming around and placing it on our table. Not sure if she was prejudice against my sisters and I due to us being Muslim women in Hijab, but this sort of behavior makes me never want to return to this establishment nor recommend this place to my family and friends. Great salads (we were there for lunch) and it was nice to let the kids play in the natural-light-filled, old school (not noisy) game room while adults chat and dine. This was my second experience at Scout. I returned with my husband after a work function the first time around. I'm not sure I will come back. We elected to sit inside as the night was cooling off and there was a jazz concert on the lawn. We were seated next to a door and still experienced everything we tried to avoid: loud music, chilly air and worst of all bugs. The next issue was our poor waitress running between tables inside and in both outdoor areas. She was lovely but definitely in the weeds all night. It really wasn't that busy but she had to be everywhere simultaneously. My last issue was what I feel is a major food faux pas at a restaurant that "emphasize(s) authenticity, transparency, and quality" (that is a quote from the website). You served us frozen Mrs. Ts pierogis. Yes. Perhaps they were not labeled that way from your distributor but as a Polish girl who grew up on this staple, this flavor is as nostalgic (not necessarily good) as it gets. It's the American equivalent of serving Kraft Mac & Cheese as a side. No no no no no. The rest of the food was okay but I will absolutely question its authenticity and quality in the future. read more
