Went this late afternoon/early evening and it was "just ok" for us. We had to park and walk from behind the building, so I knew it must be a busy time. Overall, this is a fun place for kids to burn some energy and has a separate baby/toddler area which I think is a huge plus. Here's what I didn't like: I didn't find a mention on the website that adults are only allowed to wear socks. That's fine, but I had to purchase socks upon arrival and was instructed to put my coat and boots in an unsupervised area near the door. Coats were hung on top of other coats and the coat/shoe area had trash on the floor and wasn't a place I wanted to leave my things. Extra fees- an additional parent is $5. I was aware prior to arriving of that fee but already found the place to be overpriced, especially since you can't bring in your own food/drink. The smell. The entire place smelled pretty bad and I tried to sit in several different areas but was unable to escape it. The older kid's play area really needs more air movement but even in the outer areas with tables and chairs, the smell was hard to deal with. Bathrooms are small, so there was a (short) wait and additionally there was urine on the floor (we were all in our socks so this isn't ideal) of both the women's and men's bathrooms. I was fingerprinted (for "security" measures) but did not receive a bracelet and no one checked as we left. Here's what I did like: Kids had fun! It's a really fun place. The staff is pleasant and friendly and they have a nice bookstore and even real fruit & ice smoothies. A lot of people seem to think the infant/toddler section is only the 1st quadrant, but I believe it is the whole left hand wall. Other parents do well telling bigger kids to be careful however they love the baby section. I do wish that more attention to cleaning the baby section was taken- I can tell they don't do a lot there because the gaps in the soft flooring for instance, that show the carpeted floor underneath, they never change. The biggest takeaway from our experience is please stay close to your baby so you can see what they might encounter - although it appears to be a very safe area we recently found a sizable piece of broken glass right where we were crawling, in the soft play area. Years down the road, and I'm still a big fan of this place because of the professionalism in booking parties here. I've booked 4 birthday parties already for my kids that range between their 4th and 8th birthday there. All of the birthday parties have been the most easy and hassle-free birthday party I've ever had as a working mom! From the start you book on their website, and they contact you a week earlier to do a food order. Any single question has always been addressed thoroughly. Each and every single time the attendant that is hired to handle your party is professional and genuinely helps you! You don't get that annoyed teenager that hates their job. From decorating, to handling the gifts, to ordering more food, each person has been great! I've always wanted to tip then in the end, but no tips are allowed for them! Instead, the Manager just tells everyone to Yelp them. It's on the average side of about $400, including food, to have a birthday party there for 2 hours, but that is the going rate nowadays for these kinds of places. I like how the kids are able to play an interact with each other, and not at a gaming facility where they are immersed in electronics. I'm glad they've gotten rid of ordering those expensive cakes from their own bakery. You can finally bring in your own birthday cake, which has always been annoying to me when you weren't able to! I'm still really confused why they don't allow people to decorate with helium balloons though! If they fly up in the ceiling, they'll eventually fall down right?? Did I mention that the pizza they have here for parties is soooooooooooo good!!!! I've had many parents ask me where it's ordered from. The rest of the party menu is pretty decent too. There is a spacing issue sometimes, because the kiddie parties have to shared with the normal public. I wished they would explore a size limit option on weekends or something. At times, it can get overly crowded because parents let them run wild. We love this place. My very active toddler (20 mo) LOVES it, and she's not afraid of the larger-kid-targeted parts of the place. It means I have to stick closer to her than at some of the other places, but it means she is getting even more wiggles out. It's $12 on the weekends for the under-3 crowd, and worth every penny. I I wish I could bring in snacks, though-- no outside food allowed (I assume they have a license to serve food from the health department, hence the rule). Bring socks and waters. Parking can be a bear-- there is a whole row of dance and yoga studios in the warehouse complex, and despite the metro nearby, everyone drives, so it's a fight (It has been a fight for years here-- I used to go to a gym in this park). The area is fun but they are clearly not well organized. The owner is very unpleasant. Updated review - we had my daughter's party at Scrambles. The kids had fun and thankfully missed the chaos that is working with Scramble. The biggest issue is with the hidden fees and up charging. The "new" party bookings charge the same for adults and kids even though the parents aren't playing. The food is incredibly over priced and of average quality. The party is now advertised for $300 for 30 people. Unless the kids are old enough for a drop off party be prepared to pay double. Dealing with the owner is another issue. I can't understand how he thinks his business will succeed if he continues to talk down to parents and caregivers. I look forward to the opening of Pump it Up and Get Air Alexandria which will provide very much needed competition for Laurence. Hosted birthday party for my boys and what an amazing experience. The service from start to finish was just perfect. Most wonderful customer service throughout the planning and the day of. Super attentive to our requests for food allergy concerns. This place would have garnered a 5 star rating, were it not for the extremely poor customer service the owner displayed to us. My wife forgot to bring her socks with her, and resigned herself to quietly sitting at the cafe while I accompany our son in the play areas. After a few minutes, the owner glared at her and said "you need a sock" and quickly walked away without allowing her to respond. A few minutes later, he comes back, "you need a sock" and again, scurries away. My son and I eventually got tired of playing and came back for a break. He comes back a third time and _actually_ throws a pair of socks at us (ridiculous, right?). I explain to him that my wife is sitting in the cafeteria, with no intention of going into the play area. Today we celebrated our daughters 5th bday. I can't say enough positive things about the facility and the staff. Scramble itself is very clean. The food is a step above your average concession stand. They have a large variety of food from drinks to snacks, pizza and cupcakes. The birthday party was very well staffed. They took care of every single thing. We didn't have to think about anything. The pizza was hot. The cake was quite good. Having had bday parties at Flight, Chuck-e-Cheese, etc- there is no doubt that Scramble is the way to go. read more

I visited scramble with my 4.5-year-old and 22 month old on a busy, freezing day. Though there were a lot of things I liked, I definitely wouldn't come back unless I had another adult with me- due to the "black hole" design of the big kid area, this is definitely 1:1 ratio required situation unless your kids are 5+ or both young enough to stick to the little kid area full time. Pros: facility seems clean and well-maintained. Even with a large crowd, the open space of the venue doesn't feel cramped. the staff seemed generally engaged and pleasant. Weekday prices are reasonable for what you get, especially for kids under two. there were about 10 people in line ahead of me, but the line moved pretty quickly and efficiently. People were coming in with wet boots etc. but they seemed to be making a good effort to clean up periodically as well as they could. The café area is very open and spacious. The space for smaller kids is excellent and far better than anything else I've seen in the area. In addition to a number of small climbing structures and slides, it's a pretty large area with several set ups for imaginary play: a coffee shop, an animal clinic etc. That area seemed well-monitored by a cheerful, polite staff member who directed kids not to go up the slide the wrong way and kept some of the larger kids out of the area. That area is wonderful for kids up until 2 or maybe 2.5. Cons: I have really conflicted feelings about the play area for larger kids. Although it has a ton of different, unique features, it is designed in such a way that it's a black hole and pretty impossible to monitor your child unless you are following directly behind them every second, which is actually not even possible in some smaller areas where it would be difficult for an adult to squeeze through (see pics.) So, while I was with my younger one in the area for small kids, it was not possible to even see my older one, which made me anxious because the place was SO busy and full of lots of older kids (5-8) who were also not being monitored (which we all know can sometimes, even unintentionally, lead to rough play). I did take my smaller kid into the big kid area so we could watch big sis but it was super stressful. The space is such that if you take your eyes off a smaller, minimally- verbal kid for one second, it could be disastrous. Seems like it could potential he be an extended time of separation bc I can't figure out how you would ever find them if they got lost in there. I'm curious what their protocol is for "lost" kids or whether they have video monitoring inside the large structure. In the larger structure, I only saw one staff member monitoring the top of some slides, which was nice to see, but I think it would be better to have at least one more staffer roaming the structure. Every time I went in, there was at least one kid crying. Not sure if they were lost, hurt or afraid, but there was usually some random parent asking "are you hurt? Where's your mom?" - and thankfully so, because I got the sense that a kid could be laying on the ground deep inside the structure crying, and no one would know unless an adult or an older, caring kid alerted someone. While I would normally think "ugh- why doesn't this kid have a parent watching them?", in this situation, I can see how this happens really easily if you are there with more than one child or if your kid turns a corner and you suddenly can't find them. So, I was on my little one like glue, and my older one was basically left to roam on her own. At 4.5, she is pretty independent and sturdy, and I don't consider myself a helicopter parent, but given the large number of unmonitored kids that are even older - and rougher- I was a little anxious. Even with a designated "meeting point" I had a really hard time keeping track of her, and went what felt like large periods of time without laying eyes on her, which made me uncomfortable, even with a kid who is old enough to know my cell number and our family's "lost kid" protocol. I also wouldn't really have been comfortable wearing an infant (or carrying a super pregnant belly) inside the big kid space. It would be fine on a less crowded day, but definitely not on the day that I went. For Kids 2.5-4 range, who probably wouldn't be content to be contained in the smaller area, but maybe couldn't independently navigate the larger area, I'd say you would have to be on top of them every single second in the large area. Good exercise, but also stressful. The parking lot seems to get pretty crowded. We arrived about 30 mins after opening and had to park on the other side of the building and come up a side alley with no walkway, which could have cars coming around the corner pretty blindly. Just something to be aware of. Website says outside food not allowed, but at least half of the tables had lunch boxes and outside food, so not sure if the policy has changed or if they just don't really monitor it. read more

My children had a good time. However I recommended purchasing socks with the grips on the bottom. The Floor In the areas where the tables and chairs are, are dangerously slippery, and the kids just take off running and can slip and fall. Also it smelled like Urine when I went there as well. The fruit cups had old fruit in them..particularly the strawberries. Yesterday there were bigger children in there that were being rambunctious in the toddler area, and nobody was saying anything to them. They were building very tall towers with the soft toys, and then Jumping from them. In all fairness, there was only one young man who was working the play area. He was also multitasking as well. Earlier there were two young men who were making sure the kids weren't getting too rowdy. It's a nice place for the children to get their a good workout. I would come again. read more

Couldn't have been an easier 5th birthday party to host AND simultaneously enjoy. Even our just now 2 year old was having a great time in the big kids area, mostly without my help. Drinks, pizza, veggies/fruit, sheet cake...all ordered through them. I brought decorations for the room, but not required. The last 30 min of the 2 hour slot is the perfect amount of time for food and cake. Your kids will be super sweaty and ready to eat when it's their turn. Of course, they can access the room for snacks and drinks throughout the session. Minimum parent supervision required, so give them the time off with kid dropoff! You get a party host to help with everything, from set up to cake cutting. read more

I went to Scramble a few times when it first opened and we loved it. But I recently returned for a birthday party, now with my 4-year-old and a 9-month-Old, and it was quite a stressful experience. My baby fell asleep in the car, so I wheeled him in in his stroller. Well, strollers are not allowed, which I get, but we had a private room booked for the party, where I was hoping to park the baby. Nope - I had to take the baby out, which woke him up, of course. Then we all started playing, and 15 minutes into it, one of the staff stops my older son and me to say that face paint was not allowed. He was wearing an elaborate face paint of his favorite Star Wars character, done with professional face paint that is completely dry to the touch, doesn't rub off the skin, but can be easily removed with water. So I had to ruin the party fun for my son by either leaving or wiping the make up off (which I did after a lot of tears). My heart broke for him, but what made me really angry was two staff just looking on LAUGHING at the situation. I even said to them, "Why are you laughing? There is nothing funny about this!" But they just gave me this look like "gosh, she's crazy". Maybe I am, but for the extortionate prices this place charges, they could at least have the decency to treat you with respect! Yes, I'm a stressed out Mama Bear, but if they had told me on the way in, we could have avoided all this drama by simply turning around and leaving right then and there. read more

I was prepared to love this place and was really excited to find it. Our first experience was really pleasant. We went on a weekday for $10, and the manager and staff were all very pleasant. The play area is wonderfully imaginative and has all sorts of great space and travel themes. Our second visit was a totally different experience. We made the mistake of going on a weekend. The place was packed, there was hardly any parking, and apparently the cost doubles to $20...for your child to play at an indoor playground. After about 30 minutes my son came running up to me crying. I assumed he'd quarreled with another child, but apparently one of the adult attendants had twisted his arm hard enough to make him cry. I approached the attendant, and he denied it at first, then tried to downplay it. I tried to speak to the manager about it. I completely understand that kids can be oversensitive, I just thought the manager might want to know that one of his staff was being a little rough on the kids in case this happens repeatedly. But the manager showed absolutely no concern for my child and instead was very rude and defensive. So we will not be returning. They are clearly more concerned about making money than in the welfare of the children or good customer service. read more

I do not recommend Scramble if you like good customer service or reasonable prices. We had our daughter's birthday party at Scramble. I initially thought the price was reasonable; but then I was emailed less than a week before the party and was told I must order all food, drinks, and desserts through Scramble. This fact is now advertised on their website, but was not at the time I booked my party. This caused me to unexpectedly spend an additional $200 on food! When I spoke with the owner about this, he was rude and dismissive. I would have been less irritated about the unexpected food bill if their food prices were reasonable, but their prices are outrageous. They literally charge $12 for a pitcher of "filtered water." They also charge $3 each for what looked and tasted like grocery store cupcakes. After spending about $500 on the party, my guests were then asked to pay a re-entry fee (at half price) if they wanted to play after they ate. We paid $500 for 16 children and they're going to charge them more?! It felt like we were being nickel-and-dimed like flying on a discount airline. read more

RACIST! he british owner Lawrence is racist. Today was my very first time taking my 5 year old son to scramble. I arrived around 1pm at about 4pm I was approached by the owner asking me if i was wearing socks? I said yes...he then asked me to remove my shoes. I stood up and saw a white women wearing what appeared to be black ugg boots. I said to owner that another women was wearing her shoes...he stated that he was going to say something to her next. I watched him walked past her twice and didnt say one word to her about her shoes. I walked up to the women and said the owner asked me to remove my shoes and said that he was going to tell you to do the same. The white woman proceeded to tell me that she wasn't going to remove her shoes and that he shouldn't say anything to her because he ruined her kids birthday. I went back over and I sat back in my chair. The owner walked up to me again pointed in my face and said I told you to remove your shoes I told him he should remove his finger for my face. he then proceeded to tell me to get out or he was calling the police .I told him to call the police, I walked back up to the white lady that was wearing the black boots and said he just threatened to call the police on me because I wouldn't remove my shoes. The white lady that was wearing the boots husband walked up and said what happened and I told him the whole thing and he said it was ridiculous but then he proceeded to go to the car to get his wife a pair of socks. I walked up to the front desk and I called him a racist because he is. I said to him that his tone of voice to me was inappropriate and that if he wasn't going to have everyone remove their shoes you can't single people out because they're of a different shade. He stated the reason he didn't say anything to the white people was because he had an emergency but not enough an emergency to stop him from asking me. I wouldn't even give this place one star but I had to at least give one star in order to leave this review it would be a very nice place to spend any time under new ownership. As a mom of a toddler with severe food allergies, I cannot recommend this place. I was hoping it could be a rainy day option for my kids, but after visiting today, I won't ever feel safe bringing my son here. Unlike most other indoor play gyms in the DMV, Scramble's cafè & eating area is right smack dab in the middle of the play equipment, and the kids are permitted to run back and forth between the two, thus getting food residue everywhere. To add insult to injury, they are not nut-free and have PB&J (and many other top allergens) on their café menu. To her credit, the manager was very up front about the fact that they aren't an allergy-friendly space, and that the equipment is not regularly cleaned in a way that would eliminate any allergens. Thank god for the cute little book area outside of the gym, because it was the only consolation I could give my disappointed kiddo when I told him we had to leave. Such a bummer to scratch this place off our list, but we'll be taking our business to The Wonder. read more

We had our daughters birthday here and it was a fantastic experience, Beth helped set up the room and basically took care of everything. We had a super time. My only suggestion is that for birthday parties they should consider limiting play time to one hour followed by a half hour or forty minutes for cutting the cake and eating - kids take their time! The play area is great but it seems kids get tired after an hour and waiting another half hour for food is very hard for them. The excellent: The play equipment is well made, super fun and engaging for the kids. There are always people cleaning up and the equipment looks like it's well maintained. The employees are kind. They interact with the kids in fun ways. There's coffee for sale. There are comfy bean bag chairs and lounge chairs apart from the play equipment if you want to get away for a moment. There's a book sale area with an excellent collection of Usborne books, but if you treat them gently, they'll let you look without pressure to buy. There's free wifi and plenty of tables and chairs if parents want to get work done. The not-so-good: They recently raised the prices from $10 to $12 during the week. read more

Scramble is exactly what the DC market needs for children's activities. The main play structure is huge and has interesting aspects for children of all ages. My three year old loved the planets and the squishy floor pieces, and of course the slide. The soccer court in the back was so fun too for my little sports enthusiast. The infant area was perfect for my 10-month old to crawl around while still being engaged by his surroundings. The place as very clean and the staff attentive. In speaking with the owner, it is apparent that he truly cares about the children who visit Scramble, and he built it in such a strategic and thoughtful way. He doesn't just want kids to come and run around (which they will)- he wants them to learn, even if it's subconsciously. i think this is hands down the best play place in the DC area and i can't wait to bring my kids back again! read more

Short version: AVOID. Management let an incredibly unsanitary bathroom situation persist for an extended period of time without adequately alerting customers or providing for alternative arrangements. Long version: There was a time when I would have given Scramble 3 stars. I've taken my kids multiple times since it opened a couple years ago. At first, I was impressed with the size and novelty of the space, but my enthusiasm waned with subsequent visits due to reasons already cited by other reviews: increasing prices, deteriorating equipment, overpriced yet unhealthy/SLOW food options, NO system at all for monitoring which adults enter or exit and with which kids. My kids still got excited about going, though, so I came to swallow these annoyances and accept Scramble as a necessary evil - a pricey but decent playspace for bad weather days. But after what I witnessed today, even 1 star seems generous. Took my kids there on what turned out to be a pretty packed Monday. Around 11:20 am, I ordered food for lunch and headed to the bathroom to find one toilet filled near the top with pee and toilet paper. I used the next toilet instead, and then overheard someone telling her child that they were not supposed to flush the toilet after peeing because something was wrong with the pipes (this creative mom assured her skeptical kid that this was no different from using a port-a-potty). Sure enough, when my kids needed to use the bathroom a short while later, someone told us that there were water problems and management wanted us to flush only if absolutely necessary, i.e., only for poop. Not sure what happened, but we had just gotten into a stall when the pee/TP-filled toilet began overflowing; we rushed into the next stall, but no luck as the flood of pee and whatever else began quickly creeping across the entire bathroom floor. We were, per Scramble policy, all wearing just socks, so I grabbed my kids and hoisted them over the approaching puddle and jumped out of there myself. My kids assured me they were fine not going potty for a while longer, so we all just washed our hands and went back out to the tables to eat our lunch. In the meantime, management taped off all the bathroom doors with signs saying that they were closed for "maintenance" and that they would reopen in "5-10 minutes." No announcement of any kind was made to the customers; I kept seeing confused people walk up to the bathrooms with their potty-needing kids and have to turn around. And no, the problem was not solved in "5-10 minutes." About an HOUR later, the bathrooms were STILL closed off, which meant that this place - filled with babies, toddlers, and young children (and all the accompanying germs) - had zero access to toilets, changing tables, or even sinks for hand washing for an extended period of time and during prime lunch hour. Yet Scramble continued to keep silent about the problem, choosing instead to continue admitting new customers, accepting payment, and selling food. At that point, I decided to cut our losses and head out of there before the circumstances devolved and Scramble turned into a literal cesspool of kids pooping and peeing their pants all over the place. Unfortunately, in that moment, my 4 year old frantically informed me that he needed to pee and was NOT going to be able to hold it. I went to the front desk, indicated that the bathroom situation was completely unacceptable and unsanitary, and asked if there were any bathroom at all that we could use such as an employee bathroom, a bathroom at another business nearby, etc. I was met with blank stares (clearly, no one thought to make any plans to provide customers with an alternative bathroom arrangement) and then the feeble answer that the bathrooms would be fixed in "two minutes," which I did not believe for a second. When I told them so, they relented and allowed us in to one of the family bathrooms, which had a toilet full of pee that we were still not permitted to flush, but at least hadn't yet been flooded with sewage all over the ground. We did our business, washed our hands, and left Scramble immediately. They claimed on our way out that the bathrooms were fixed and being reopened, but I have no idea whether that was true since we didn't stick around to test the claim. I am not a "squeaky wheel" customer and typically shrug off snafus and give businesses the benefit of the doubt. But what Scramble did today was beyond the pale. The moment they realized that there was an issue affecting the bathrooms, they should have alerted customers or even shut down (issuing refunds if necessary) until the problem was resolved. Instead, they haphazardly told folks "don't flush if it's just pee," which backfired when inevitably someone flushed either by accident or because there was poop. This was no minor mishap; it showed a complete lack of judgment and care for the health of customers. Shame on you, Scramble. read more

As my daughter said, this was the No. 1 birthday! We celebrated my daughters' combined birthday party at Scramble last weekend and they loved it. It was clear it also was a hit with their friends as well. The kids had a blast playing in the massive indoor playground especially going down the slide. And the staff was amazing, kind and helpful. They take care of everything from getting the food ready and served, wrangling the kiddos, to even a sweet birthday sign on the door. This started off being a great place for my 10 month old on a rainy Monday around 2pm. There is lots to do, and she crawled everywhere. But we quickly realized that there were major issues with this place. Firstly older kids keep coming in the baby crawling section, much much older kids, like 5yr olds, with no parents in site, no one is monitoring this and it's dangerous and annoying. Secondly they have poor hygiene. About an hour into our visit, an older child vomited his whole lunch in the toddler play area, (right at the front of the cave area with the lights) in front of my eyes, sadly we (baby and I) were in the cave. I held my breath and tried to quickly get myself and my baby away. I went to tell staff, they took far too long to clean up and they only cleaned the area with plain pampers wipes, instead of antibacterial wipes, this made me feel sick, we moved away from that area only to see another child throwing up, we then decided to promptly leave. Who knows if these kids had infectious vomits, we didn't stick around to find out. The CDC needs to be onto this place. read more

So clean and a lot of space! High quality equipment too. I was really impressed with everything there is to do there. The outer space area was so cool! Also the owner could see I was struggling while leaving with 2 kids under 2 and he carried the car seat out to my car for me. Such a big help! read more
