Spice level 5 was perfect for me

Spice level 5 had the right heat for me, and went well with the fries and ranch on the side. Chicken was really juicy. They also have ketchup, mustard and honey packets you can grab

Come get your chicken on! Scratch Cookery serves Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, burgers, tenders, and fries with spice levels from classic to 7 (ghost and Carolina reaper hot). The husband and I came here for lunch on a weekend. Parking wasn't too bad, but because it is located in downtown area, expect some challenges. There was a line out the door when we arrived, but it moved at a quick pace. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with limited seating indoor and out. The husband and I ordered the Grilled Cheese Nashville Hot and Chicken Tenders. The Grilled Cheese was tasty with a nice balance of heat and tanginess from their slaw. The Chicken Tenders were appetizing, but it wasn't as flavorful as I had hoped for. It does come with sauce on the side, which helped. Staff were nice and service was efficient despite the growing line. Although a bit pricey, I think their chicken is good and worth trying out if you're in the area.

Enjoved a visit to Scratch Cookery today. Note that this is a casual spot with limited seating inside with a few benches outside. The chicken sandwiches are hearty and packed with flavor, even the 0 level had a lot of flavor going for it. The tofu sandwich was my favorite, great flavor and surprisingly satisfying. The fries are also unique and definitely worth trying. Overall, a solid spot with creative, flavorful food and hearty portions,

Down the Scratch Food truck turned Fountain Alley brick-and-mortar that achieved max popularity during the Pandemic. I kept hearing about their hot chicken sandwiches for years, and we finally made the trek to check them out. The Good: * Friendly service * Prices aren't too bad considering the portion size and flavor. * Outdoor dog-friendly seating * Craft brews in cans * Seven levels of heat for everyone from the spice-averse to the hardcore fire lover. * Chicken sandwiches are massive and delicious. And despite it being a breast, they kept it very juicy. * Really loved their fries; I'm not sure if they make them in-house or if they're frozen, but regardless, they're fantastic. The Meh: * Not much in the way of drinks except for the aforementioned beers and cans of soda. The Ugly: * It's located in DTSJ, so you'll most likely have to pay for parking. If you don't mind walking a few blocks, the 4th St Garage is free for the first 90 min. Conclusion: Great spot to get your spice on.

Scratch cookery's fries were supreme, their chicken unfortunately did not hit at the same level for me. I came here for dinner on a weekday and it was not busy at all luckily. This place is in downtown San Jose so it does not have its own parking lot but you will need to choose an infrastructure to park at. If you are trying to find this spot, it is next to goodtime bar and tucked away in a somewhat alley, rather than being front and center in street view. There is some seating inside and outdoors as well, so it's friendly to order your meal and hang out while drinking a beer in complement of the sandwich. I ordered the chicken tenders with level 3 heat, while my partner got a classic chicken sandwich. He thought that the classic chicken sandwich would give you an option of spice levels too but default it is just the sandwich itself. Their fries again to emphasize, are spectacular! I think it has something to do with their fun crescent moon shape. I typically do not like thicker steak fries, but man, these were tasty and seasoned amazingly. No ketchup needed. When it came to the chicken dishes, while the tenders were well coated with a good ratio between breading to chicken, I felt like outside of the crust, there wasn't any flavor with the chicken itself (was not salty and I wish it was juicy). They gave me some sauce to pair with it, but personally for me, a good chicken tender should standalone be equally delicious. My partner's sandwich was juicy but again I did wish they soaked the chicken or marinated it a bit more to incorporate more flavors. Overall, this spot was fine for me. I don't know if I would come back for the chicken but if I wanted a snack, I would love to get the fries again. :)

The service was wonderful. The food itself was filling. The chicken was a lot more hot and spicy than I anticipated. My mouth was on fire! The pickles did help. The chicken itself was juicy and very meaty.

The Nashville sandwich was succulent and tender. It's enough to be shared between two people when cut in half. The fried chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bread was soft and fresh, the comeback sauce added a creamy tang, and the toppings brought a fresh and crisp texture. One small note is that I received crinkle cut fries, whereas I had previously seen their fries presented in a twister style. The fries were good, but slightly different from what I expected.

Scratch Cookery is one of the many local places hidden in the allies of Downtown San Jose. They are not far from the heart of Downtown, and definitely not far from the university. I stumbled upon this place one day while doing my random walk, so you KNOW I had to give this place a try. I had went in upon opening time, so my wait was a little bit, but I was not complaining because you know what they say: "Greatness comes when you build them up one by one." I got their hamburger with the extra cheese, and curly fries. The patty was extra juicy, and the brioche buns were toasted really well. I especially like how they added on the cheese after the patty was marinated on the grill for quite a while, but not too long to the point all of the juice was sucked up. The only down side to the food: the prices. Be prepared to spend quite a bit on lunch if you decide to go to this place, because they do end up charging quite a bit more than what the regular places around Downtown would. But the IPA beers make up for it, so it's also worth a bang for your buck. Hospitality was pretty top-notch -- my order was taken in an orderly fashion, and they even apologized for the wait as well. I hope Scratch Cookery stays around for a long while so that people can try out such majestic wonders this establishment has to offer! Ambiance was great, and I'd definitely be back again!

This place was recommended from a family member. They raved about the sandwiches and brought us for dinner. I was told their food was spicy but I was glad they had non spicy nuggets for my toddler. I got the tofu sandwich with 2 spice level. It was pretty spicy but overall delicious. The tofu was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The fries was so good too. I never seen them cut that way but it gave them a great texture. I would definitely be back to try more items.

Scratch Cookery is a hole-in-the-wall spot in downtown San Jose that caught my attention while I was searching for Nashville-style hot chicken. After living in Atlanta for over 10 years, I'm no stranger to Southern cuisine, and Nashville hot chicken is something I truly missed after moving to California a few months ago. I ordered the GC Nashville Hot Sandwich (Texas Toast) combo, which lets you choose your heat level and comes with fries. The sandwich was huge and very well made--juicy chicken, nicely assembled, and satisfying overall. While it doesn't quite match the iconic flavor of Hattie B's, it's still definitely worth trying if you're craving hot chicken in the Bay Area. The fries were thick-cut, twisted, and crispy, which I really enjoyed. Now for the downsides. The price felt steep--over $18 before tips and taxes for the combo. On top of that, the restaurant is located in an area with no street parking. The only option was paid parking right in front of the restaurant, which ended up costing me $20 for just 15 minutes. That pushed the total experience to $40+ for a chicken sandwich, which is honestly a hard no for me. Overall, the food itself is good and hits the spot flavor-wise, but between the pricing and parking situation, it's not something I'd personally repeat. If you're nearby or don't have to worry about parking, it might be worth a one-time visit--but for me, the overall cost outweighed the experience.

So I decided to stop in here for lunch and was not disappointed! After seeing the reviews I had to check this place out. You walk in and it's a small place where you can see the whole kitchen and the staff. Walked up to the friendly staff member behind the counter. She gave me a few recommendations and I decided to order the spicy chicken sandwich grilled cheese combo. The price was a tad steep, 22$ plus the sauces, taxes and tip it came out to 28$. However after I got my sandwich I quickly understood why. It's huge and was amazing. Every bite tasted so good! Only complaint is the fires were kinda cold. Overall this is a really solid spot! Would recommend it.

    Classic cheeseburger w/ fries

Hubby and I were craving burgers and had been wanting to try Scratch Cookery for a while, so we decided that on this rainy date night, we'd do it. It's a cozy little spot located in an alley way, with not a whole lot of seating (less when it's rainy and you don't want to sit outside), so we got lucky that it wasn't packed this night. We both ordered the classic cheeseburger with seasoned fries. We managed to snag a couple of seats along the wall counter and waited for about 10 minutes or so for our food. The first impression I had was how delicious looking and smelling the French fries were. They were so uniquely shaped, unlike any fries I'd ever had. The burger looked good, with meat smashed in with grilled onions. I was so enamored by the fries, that I started with that and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them. Some pieces were cut like super-thick kettle chips, crisp along the edges, soft in the center, with tasty seasoning all around. I didn't need ketchup to enjoy them. After nibbling on a few fries, I eagerly dove into my cheeseburger because really, this was the real reason we came out. When I picked up the burger, I was expecting it to be hotter than it was since it had just come out fresh. I bit into it and while I enjoyed the first bite being a nice blend of soft brioche, classic American cheese, and crisp lettuce, I was really hoping the meat would be warmer than it was. The taste was fine - it didn't blow my mind. I think I was just so hung up on the fact that the burger wasn't hot that it distracted me from any flavor I was meant to enjoy. it was such an opposite experience from that first bite of French fry I had, which I really enjoyed. I would like to come back because as I was sitting there under the menu wall, I was wondering if maybe I would have enjoyed the Nashville hot chicken more. Reading through the different varieties of chicken and spice levels, I found myself thinking about the what ifs instead of the actual food I was eating. Next time.

Came here in the evening, small place tucked around the corner near the VTA drop off point. It's a small place that doesn't have enough lighting in interior where consumer eat. One middle table and the rest are edge stools or outside tables. The food is alright. Chicken is juicy and cooked well, considering how large of a piece they put in the sandwich. Which is kind of a bad thing to me because it ruins the balance of the other toppings inside the sandwich. Seasoned fries were good. Not too dry, still crunchy and soft inside.

Kao Gai Sap (5/5) - The chicken was soft and juicy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. It came with a chili dipping sauce, and I opted for white rice instead of chicken rice. This has to be by far the BEST chicken I've ever had. The chicken was seasoned to perfection. Cucumber was crisp and refreshing, although I do wish there were a few more slices. Crispy chicken skin (5/5) - I mean it's fried chicken skin, but I'm pretty sure they used the same salt/pepper seasoning on this as they did with the Kao Gai Sap, which gave it a nice flavor profile as opposed to being plain. They are located next to a Ranch 99 in a shopping plaza with plenty of parking. The store is small but clean and cute. There is a display case with all the chicken foot flavors, pre-packaged. The man working there was very friendly and allowed me to sample all the flavors. I tried the Thai, the spicy, and the garlic, and ended up going for the garlic (though the Thai was a close contender!) The chicken feet are cut into smaller pieces and deboned quite well. The garlic flavor is pungent and refreshing; I definitely needed mouthwash after eating it though! The flesh is crunchy and flavorful, just super super satisfying. Overall, the chicken feet here are quite well made and prepared. I think the price is a bit steep but you definitely get what you pay for. As someone who likes deboning the chicken feet myself, it did feel like I was missing that 2% to take this place to the next level. I also like the seasoning on the hot chicken- it's less salty than most places and more of a real chili pepper flavor to it. Now for what wasn't my favorite: the chicken was a tad bit on the dryer side and the batter was an in-between of crispy and stale. The loaded mac came with both fries and mac n cheese. The mac itself was a bit bland, but everything out together was not bad. They had what seemed like no AC or proper ventilation when we went and it was so warm! Had us sweating by the end of the meal from both the spice and the heat. Workers were bare minimum of taking your order, and it took around 10 min for everything to come out. Overall: 3.6/5

I got the Drip #3 and it was amazing! The chicken was really good, but the sauce honestly has to be…read morethe best part it went perfectly with the chicken. Anna was also so kind when she took my order tonight. She helped me choose which combo to get and made the whole experience really easy and welcoming. She recommended the new wrap too, so I'll definitely be coming back soon to try it!
