Nice friendly place along a stretch of Madison Ave. in Forest Park lined with small shops and eateries. I was in the area early due to what I'm calling our rainy season, having extra time before an appointment I decided to stop in because I heard of the claim to fame about the Mac & Cheese on Chicago's best. I ordered the small, thankfully and couldn't even eat half it's a generous portion. I also ordered the house salad, which also was very generous. I enjoyed the Mac & Cheese and can see why some would put it on the Chicago's Best list, it was done properly, noodles not overcooked and the cheese was a nice stick to the noodle consistency. For my taste buds a little to mild, I like a good cheddar or some other sharp cheese bite to it. However, this is a personal thing and I certainly don't think it's worth taking away from their rating. Now to the salad, that was outstanding, and I'd go back just for that. Cold and crisp, with all sorts of flavors, a bit of blue cheese, some tortilla strips for crunch, carrots, etc. Just a tasty big bowl of goodness. This normally would be a four star, the fifth for how nice they were. They put down the Mac first when I saw the size, I thought maybe I shouldn't have the salad, and asked if they had made it. When he motioned it was right there and showed it to me, I sort of said, oh no I ordered to much. He then asked if I still wanted it. I thought this was really nice since, hell I did order it and since I was the only one in the place it may get tossed, unless he or the one other person working were hungry. My mistake, so I was going to take responsibility and try it. Turned out to be a good choice after all. Word of caution if you eat your meal at the bar, it has a really thick lip on it. Unless your tall, it's hard to get over it and eat over your plate. I'm of average height for a female and had a hard time. I scooched forward to get close, well one of those noodles with cheese fell and landed on the lip of the bar and my shirt, my right nipple to be precise, all I could think of in that split second is OMG I hope this comes off, and if I had another shirt in my car. On two separate occasions, we did not see our waitress for over 25 minutes, which prohibited us from ordering another drink or getting the check. I understand slow service in a crowded restaurant. ALL SCRATCH'D UP / A DOWNWARD SPIRAL This Forest Park burger bar has transferred on the fast track to 1-starsville, and it's a nonstop trip ladies and gentlemen. Buckle up. My most recent visit (fourth overall, and my last) saw its fair share of misfires and straight up WTF moments that leaves me totally befuddled. Reasons like: ‡ canceled breakfast. Thrilled at the idea of having Sunday brunch, Jessi W and I walked in and sat ourselves, as per their policy. A chalk drawing highlighted their weekend morning offerings, several of which I was going to try..... .......or not. Apparently their brunch cook was dealing with a personal emergency which meant that the remaining cooks somehow couldn't manage morning food in his absence. As a result, our server didn't even give us brunch menus but instead told us "we have waffles, but not french toast, although we can make a frittata but probably not eggs benedict." Exacerbating matters was the fact that I was ordering blind (I had zero clue what my food would wind up costing). What would you expect to pay for a 3-egg breakfast with bacon and hash browns? $6? $8? Try $10. Ten dollars for a meager, poorly-plated serving of eggs+meat+hash. No toast, no pancakes, no juice or coffee. My parents got robbed once in Buenos Aires; now I can sympathize with them. ‡ handling silverware.....by the wrong end. Unlike the breakfast cook being AWOL, this is a totally preventable -- and totally inexcusable -- mark against them. It wasn't bad enough that we had to ask for forks with our freaking food (duh), but when server #2 brought them to us, she spun them around 180° and placed them on our plates while holding onto the useable ends! This egregiously unhygienic act left me with my mouth literally wide open in shock. ‡ pointless draftiness. Many restaurants use a double-door concept (i.e. airlock) to prevent icy blasts of wind from smacking patrons in the face as they dine during the winter months. SKL has one set up, but they chose not to use it. Instead, they propped the first door wide open for no particular reason, thus defeating the point of the airlock and giving everyone inside periodic gusts of January cold. Lovely. ‡ stolen lettuce. This was the pinnacle of the meal's 'whatthef*ckery'. Since burger toppings aren't listed on the menu, we had to ask server #1 what condiments were included and no sooner did Jessi W ask for tomato, onion and lettuce than we were informed "ACTUALLY we don't have lettuce today because our shipment was stolen." D-wha?!?! I had no words, no choice other than to laugh out loud - partially from despair, partially from astonishment - that any business could have their vegetable stock pilfered from them. I briefly considered that server #1 was bullsh*tting us, but then I rationalized that she was being completely honest. I don't know which is worse: a lie, or the truth about their lettuce that'd gone MIA. Bread = 3 Circuses = 0 - TL;DR - It takes a considerable effort to elicit a 1-star review from me. You've gotta do a lot of things incorrectly to get on my sh*tlist. In fact, only 2.4% of businesses receive this dubious honor from yours truly but the ones that deserve it REALLY deserve it. Point in case, Scratch Kitchen and Lounge. I hope the owner reads this and replies with another super passive/aggressive response....not because I appreciate snarky feedback but simply out of hope that management will take the proper actions. Then again, I won't ever be returning to see if said changes were implemented or not. I've gone here a few times with my bf as he's most familiar with this restaurant but both times I ordered their burgers! They have different style burgers you can pick and or a build your own burger. I won't lie their burgers are pretty big in size as they give you your money's worth but if you're thinking about getting fries just a heads up you will have to pay extra for that - they don't have a burger and fries kinda meal deal. I usually do the build your own-burger but it's a traditional cheese burger with truffle fries...Their burgers are always cooked to perfection and I can eat the entire thing (usually skip breakfast so I can save all the room for it lol)! Their wings are good as well nothing to make a big deal out of but I'm sure one who go them are most likely to find these wings as a standard to one of your other local wing spots. Even with all those flavors the taste of the meaty, ground beef patty wasn't overwhelmed. This was a burger worth a ten spot plus one. The accompanying fries, though, diminished the meal. Went to Scratch with friends for brunch around noon on a Saturday. Drinks: The Bloody Mary ($5) was standard but you can upgrade ($8) to a bloody served with a beer back and a skewer with meat, cheese and olives. My friend had the Bellini ($5) which was good as well. I would recommend if you're in the mood for a sweeter breakfast drink. I did like that the drinks were inexpensive compared to a lot of places in the Chicago area. Food: I ordered the French toast which came with hash browns and bacon. It met my expectations and hit the spot. The serving was large too. The service was a little slower than I expected for being one of two tables in the restaurant. One of the few establishments in the area which is open late with really good food. Each time I have dined, it has been on Trivia night and it was relatively late. It appears trivia draws a pretty large crowd but trivia aside, this place is pretty popular and I can fully appreciate why. I have dined in once and ordered take out the other. Service was great in both instances. My takeout order was wrong but the mess ups were not the worse ever just a tad inconvenient. SKL is one of my favorite neighborhood bars. I love their burgers and fries. So far, I've tried all of them including the good old fashion scratch burger, the meatless and both pork inspired burgers. Today, I had the Burger Binge burger special. It was a turkey burger with Asian inspired slaw and lots of sriracha. Oh my did it have a nice kick. The rest of their menu is pretty decent too if you're not interested in a burger. Getting hungry again. Typically, service is great, today was a little off. I had to wait an extra 5 or 10 minutes for my burger while I dogged my bfs fries. It's OK though, we enjoyed sitting outside in the sun, people watching and loving my burger. Our server kept coming by to check on us since we were possibly the only weirdos showing up right as they opened. He had to eat to go get ready for work so it was a viable option. Too bad they're not 100% up and running right as they open. It's fine though, again, we were enjoying each others company and the atmosphere from outside. It was very nice. My bf wasn't as excited with the fries and his burger. I told him it's because he got American cheese instead of no cheese or possibly cheddar. I wanted a taste but controlled myself even though the fried egg on top looked oh so good! Bathrooms are unisex which rocks in my opinion. When I need to go, I don't care for gender separations. With varieties of burgers to chose from like "three little pigs" and the "scratch burger," staying healthy is not at all part of the menu but who cares!!!! The chicken fingers were perfectly fried and the fries with butter and Parmesan cheese - dear lord! Delicious!!! The portions are huge and the selection of beer ranges between Ipas, pale ales, wheats, stouts, ciders, and English ales. My girlfriend and I came in here for supper the other night. Overall we went away happy and full. It wasn't the best food I ever had, but it was very good. We decided to sit at the bar since the tables were kind of long and awkward. The server and bartender were very pure, friendly and prompt. We order the chicken finger basket and the Greek burger and split it. The burger was spot on, only issue was we were told they couldn't cook the burger to a medium which I found odd. This experience still has me rather sad. It was just a mess. The burger was a mess . The macaroni was a mess. The service was a mess. It just wasn't a good day at Scratch for all involved. I recommended this restaurant telling my friend they were in for the best burger of their lives. The "From the south burger" was executed so poorly. The pulled pork was like sludge that was just slapped onto the beef.usually the pairing of the beef and the pork with the BBQ sauce would leave you speechless. However, this was all a soggy tasteless mess. The aged cheddar was no where to be found and the burger just tasted like a sloppy wet noodle. I had to ask for BBQ sauce to add taste to the burger. It was so blah in comparison to what this kitchen used to produce. Especially when you are paying 15 bucks for a burger in Forest Park, you would like to be impressed. The expectations were way too high as the entire meal fell so flat. The truffle Mac n cheese tasted like the iron skillet. It just was not good or not as good as it once was which was very saddening. Is there a new chef? The meals came out so quickly that I wondered if it was even fresh or if they put any type of care into preparing the dishes. The pickle fries were good. But overall very underwhelming for a place that I used to think was a 10/10. If you're looking for a great burger in Oak Park head to winberries. They never disappoint. I would give this place 4 stars overall. We got a to-go order of truffle mac and cheese and three little pigs burger (with an upgrade to garlic butter fries). Keep in mind that we were late for our order so the food wasn't the freshest (about 30 min). Let's start with the burger. It has a pork patty topped with bacon jam, bacon, cheese sauce, and a sriracha ranch sauce. It all comes together very well for a savory flavor with a hint of spice. I was able to sub in garlic butter fries for only $2 which I highly recommend instead of getting it as a side for $6.5. The fries were great as well! Fully of buttery and garlic flavor. We got the bigger truffle mushroom mac and cheese and it was HUGE. It's almost $16 which is quite expensive for pasta with no meat but it's honestly big enough for 3 people to eat and be fulI. It has lots of mushrooms and a nice cheesy flavor throughout. It was also topped with crunch breadcrumbs which is always nice. I would have liked it to have a little more flavor with herbs and spices but it was a nice classic mac and cheese. Overall - this is a pretty solid place! One of the reasons I give two stars is because the waitress was kind. We arrived (only two additional couples waiting for their food and a guy at the bar) , waited, waited, waited.... 10 min later, my son got up himself to grab a menu from the counter. Waitress come 5 min later sorry she kept us waiting. She takes our order.... Waited, waited, waited ... 40 min later I finally inquire status of our order (prior to this, one of the other couples got up to inquire as well and were starting to get upset) waitress yells to the cook and cook says 2-3 minutes. During our 40 min wait the guy at the bar asks the cook if he knew what he was doing and the cook basically responds he doesn't know what he's doing, he just puts stuff (used not a friendly word) together and pretends to know what he's doing. Now keep in mind the cook is young and is laughing and chatting through all this. Ok fine, at this point I understand some establishments are under staffed and I'm keeping my my calm, hangry but calm.... Until I get my Impossible Burger. No flavor, flat and hard and plain after I confirmed with the waitress when I ordered if it came with tomatoes and lettuce and she confirmed it did. My son had the chicken tenders, let's just say he only ate two, hard, with an oil flavor. I ate most of my burger, upset but ate it because it's not fair for my husband and son to deal with I being hangry. Again, the 2 stars come from the waitress kindness, and another lady that walked in almost at the end of our experience came to ask us if everything was ok. My biggest complaint is the quantity of my meal, but this was very well-handled by our wonderful waitress. My fiance and I showed up around 6:40 on a Friday night. We asked for a table for 6 (our original plan), and we were luckily accommodated right away. Around 7:10 our other two guests showed up, and we were then a party of 4. I found it interesting that all of their beers come in cans. Not a bad thing, just a little odd for a bar/restaurant. The burgers and garlic fries were really tasty from what I sampled! When I got my salad, at first there wasn't any chicken on it, which the waitress said was her mistake and took it right back (no big deal). When I got it back, it had the most measly amount of cold, shredded, not-fresh-at-all chicken on it. I somewhat blurted out to the waitress "Is this it?" If I'm paying an extra $3.50 for chicken on my salad, I expect to actually get chicken on it, preferably freshly cooked, too. The waitress again kindly took it back and had extra added on. The salad and dressing were both delicious, so it's a shame that the chicken literally sucked. Similar to what another reviewer had complained about - that breezeway door at the entrance absolutely needs to be fixed or put back into operation or whatever. It baffles me when I see restaurants making these kinds of mistakes and still somehow staying in business. My order consisted of: 1x Brined Fried Chicken Sandwich - $11.00 1x European Butter and Garlic Spud - $6.50 1x Brownie - $7.50 Total: $27.50, not including tip. The fried chicken was hard, stringy inedible chicken that either sat around for a long time and/or was just overcooked to begin with (not burned). Served on a soggy bun and presented with no love or care. The European Butter and Garlic Spud is probably what disappointed me most. A large portion of fresh cut fries drizzled in butter and garlic, what could go wrong? Well... they were served in a basket absolutely flooded with butter and oil, 3/4 of the fries were competently inedible due to being nearly mush at the point they arrived. The other 1/4 seemed to have sat around as they were limp, soft and cold. Alright well, whatever. How can you screw up a brownie? Especially one that costs $7.50? Well, you put zero love into, you clearly microwave it, and you serve it half warm and soggy, half frozen and hard. I've been to some nightmare restaurants in my time, but this is definitely a standout. Service was fine and front house staff were friendly. Kitchen and management clearly needs to pull their heads out of their asses. At nearly $30 a person there is zero to ever come here, much less recommend it to anyone. There are way better restaurants withing walking distance. UPDATE: Just shortly after posting this review, I would like everyone to see the response I received from the business owner, in case he takes it down: "Wow, quite the review Your opinion clearly stands in the vast minority Not a better walkable option or drive able ...lol Have a great weekend Clearly we messed up your order , mistakes happen Maybe pull you head out of your ass and stop bashing good local popular businesses!" So lets dissect this for a moment. He was upset I wrote a bad review, LIED BLATANTLY when stating there is not restaurants walk-able or drive-able, (there are literally 12 within a 12 block radius) and then admitted that the lunch service was "messed up" but takes no responsibility. Clearly the business owner thinks it's OK for even (allegedly) one time mistakes to happen and for customers to just have to deal with it. Shall we discuss how it looks when a (professional?) Business owner insults and and tells a paying customer to pull their head out of their ass? Maybe he just thought he was being cute copying my original review, who knows? Well, an actual professional would know that that is bad optics, however good it might feel. In the interest of transparency, here was my reply to the owner: "I hope everyone sees this and decided whether or not they want to give money to someone who runs their business like that. There are literally 12 restaurants within two blocks, so now you're a liar on top of a terrible owner and operator. You don't win anyone's hearts and minds by insulting opinions you disagree with, or by being crass in the hopes of appearing funny. You're not a TV chef, and from what I can tell you're not a proper business manager either. Admitting "mistakes happen" and then stating that a paying (one time) customer just should be OK with awful food service is ridiculous, and a sign of a defensive, immature, unprofessional man-child. If you actually had faith in your "good local popular business" (that's a lot of qualifiers, there is that defensiveness I was talking about) you would have apologized for the issues, and invited me back to give you another shot. Instead you got upset like a child, said "So what, shit happens! Deal with it while I take your money! Everybody loves us, ask anybody." and I hope everyone reading the reviews see it for what it is. Good late night kind of food. The vibe is very dive bar restaurant. Service was quick and food was good, just mainly fried. I got the veggie burger with the garlic fries. Enjoyed the food, but the veggie burger does kind of fall apart as you eat it so be prepared. I still enjoyed it, just messy. Fries were my favorite though. My friend got the pickled fries, not sure I would recommend. If you like pickles maybe, but I didn't think it was anything special. The taste just felt oily more then anything. read more

My husband ordered the Cuban wig regular fries. I got the scratch burger with Parmesan garlic fries. After Jeremy left we decided we also wanted to try the amazing looking mac and cheese. We ordered a small order of the truffle, Parmesan, and prosciutto Mac and cheese. It was THE BOMB! My burger was really one of the best I've had and the garlic fries were fantastic. I'm new to the area and have enjoyed learning the carry-out and patio options nearby. Scratch has gone to the top of my list for carry out, and I would say that my husband and I order from here about once a week, which is more often than anywhere else. Everything we've tried has been delicious, with the turkey melt as my absolute favorite. (Anything on their naan is delicious). Ordered online for carryout and was very disappointed. I ordered the stuffed pretzel knots and a prime rib french dip. First, the pretzel knots were supposed to be stuffed with pimento cheese and have cheese and mustard to dip. The pretzels I got were not stuffed with anything. Second, the sandwich was apparently the special on Saturday and not available today on Monday when I ordered. This is an excusable mistake except they didn't say anything in advance until we called about the missing food and then they told us. Instead of maybe calling so I could order something they did have, or at least telling the person that picked up the food. We had a group order and a couple of others ordered cheese curds they were out of and they did not tell us either. They said they credited our order which I have not gotten yet but I would like to know if that credit is going to adjust the tax and tip I paid as well. A simple phone call or even telling the person at pick up would have prevented this review but also the pretzel knots not being what they advertised is very disappointing as well. read more

Recently stopped eating meat, which is hard as sh!t, and I made the best decision by ordering the Mediterranean fries! They're amazing! Keep the olives for my taste buds and we have a winner. read more
