WOW! Sea Ranch has great sushi with very friendly service! It is literally a grocery store with a couple tables so there really isn't any decor. However, the sushi is fresh and authentic. They have an amazing all you can eat for 19.99 a person with an ENORMOUS selection! They even have specialty rolls on the all you can eat menu along with desserts and noodle dishes. What I like about the all you can eat menu is that there is absolutely NO catch. It truly is all you can eat. There is no limit on anything. Very affordable Sushi. Very well made and good fish used. However, and maybe I just came in at the wrong time, but the last three times I picked up there were flies. I really can't stand seeing flies in places where I'm about to buy food. I hope the next time it's a bit cleaner. After craving AYCE sushi (what else is new), I decided to return to Sea Ranch with my bf after visiting once before year's ago. The place itself is not fancy at all since it's practically a convenience store, which had my boyfriend questioning whether we should really be eating raw fish here... But Sea Ranch definitely has the freshest, tastiest sushi for AYCE and much better than Todoroki in my opinion for a couple of dollars more ($26 vs. $23 or so). Even though you don't have as many appetizer options, you can get half orders of ramen or udon, which is sooo much better than miso soup. Also, if you don't have time or the stomach for AYCE, they have some great sushi or sushi/noodle combos for really cheap. Definitely check this place out for some great sushi!! read more

FRESH VALUE. That epitomizes this gem. Sea Ranch has fresh quality sushi-grade fish and a variety of authentic dishes from udon, ramen, to sesame ramen. It's quality and priced perfectly. What I love best is their $20 all you can eat special. It includes almost their whole menu and with the quality of fish they are serving, is an AMAZING VALUE. If you're a SERIOUS sushi fiend, this is the place for you. Some of the freshest best sushi outside of Tokyo for $20 all you can eat. By serious I mean you eat Nigiri sushi mostly (raw fish on rice, that's it) most of the time, and the occasional roll only rarely --- rather than the other way around. If you realize putting mayo on sushi is the Americanization of the dish, and if you care more about the food being great than the restaurant being fancy... again this is the place for you. It started out as a fish store, put in a little sushi area after many requests, and over the years the sushi has become the largest share of their business and pretty much taken over the store. They've added a few other dishes to the menu since then (some udon, etc) but it's the sushi you come here for. Probably the best Sushi in Evanston. My wife and I really love sushi and you can compare the quality of sushi when comparing the salmon and tuna sashimi. This place is not fancy but the food is great. Go for the dragon roll! Also great are the Udon soup and the eel! It's pouring outside but we still decided to try this place, and I have to say it's totally worth it!

This is some of the BEST cheapest sushi I ever had. This stuff wont compare to a good sushi joint, but is hundred times better than anything you buy at a supermarket. Never ate inside, always to go. Presentation is almost absent. Very generic looking, so is the place itself, had two shelfs of Japanese snacks, a depressing looking half empty freezer and 4 small tables. But that doesn't matter much because the prices are soooo cheap and the sushi is decent. Update: Went back here now, looks like they fixed some of their decor and engrish. No longer do they have a depressing half empty freezer, now filled with take away items, much improvement read more

I completely agree with Jeanne J's review of Sea Ranch. There isn't much here that separates it from Sashimi Sashimi. The really common fish like salmon, tuna, yellowtail are all decently fresh. The ikura and eel were ok. The uni was a no-go... I would recommend Sea Ranch if you want to walk into somewhere casual to get fresh-made sushi quickly - it's definitely a better and affordable alternative to buying pre-made sushi at Jewel or Whole Foods. Also, the 19.95 all-you-can-eat sushi option is a good deal, if a little slow. read more

We ordered sushi and miso from Sea Ranch a couple days ago. The miso was super salty, practically inedible. The sushi was butchered. From my humble culinary understand, I know that sushi is all about the delicate art of the cut and precision of proportions. Ours was butchered pretty bad. Not going to order from here ever again. Sea Ranch... What a wonderful surprise you have become to a few who are searching for reasonably priced sushi! Located right off of the Dempster stop on the purple line is a small grocery store with seats and a counter from which to order food. Let's just get down to the food shall we? Tongkotsu ramen: I had expected deep fried pork to be served with this dish and was SO surprised that it didn't come. When we asked the wonderful young lady if it did come with it, I was saddened when she said it was just "flavored." Later on when we bought some ice cream, she corrected our understanding of Japanese which I really appreciated. It wasn't Tongkatsu like I had expected; it was TongKOTSU which is the pork bone and not the deep fried mashed pork as I knew it. Wonderful, dinner and education; I always enjoy that. =) California Roll: Meh...Won't get that again. But wonderful sushi rice though. Yellow Tail: Not much flavor here too, but fresh. Spicy Tuna Roll: Wonderful tuna flavor but no spice. Still fresh. Gourd Roll: Absolutely delicious. Best I've had so far. Ate here today for the AYCE. Thought the fish was good but the rice was very eh. It was a great deal though (i recommend staying for a couple hours) and very good smelt roe nigiri. The rice was pretty cold and bland. I prefer Sashimi Sashimi for sushi. read more

I go here a couple of times a week for take-out dinner, and sometimes in the middle of a long walk I'll stop in for a roll and a cup of (free) hot tea. I think I can honestly say I never get take-out anywhere else. The sushi is top-shelf, very reasonably priced, and the people who work there are pleasant and helpful. If you don't call ahead there are often ready-to-eat trays by the cash register. Tip: it's becoming quite popular, so if you order takeout on the phone, give it a little more than 20 minutes. Word has gotten around... Also parking is sparse around there but there are a few spots around the building to the east. read more
