I reunited with my high school friends for dinner inside the W Hotel. The restaurant was situated on the lobby of the hotel. This restaurant is part of same group as Lure Fishbar. We were seated in the corner booth and celebrated my friend's birthday. It was supposed to be two additional birthdays, but both celebrants were sick. We started off with cocktails: my friends had Belvedere with diet coke, espresso martini and Soapbox social. We enjoyed them. For the appetizer we shared the Farmstead Ricotta with radicchio. Portion was small. The ricotta was divided into 3 pieces. It was pretty good. For the entrees we ordered the Roasted monkfish, roasted duck and steak with butter. Everyone loved the entrees. You cannot go wrong ordering the monkfish, duck or steak. For dessert we shared the baked Alaska which was served tableside. There was no dessert menu because it changes on a daily basis. My friend got a complementary dessert for her birthday. Service was on point. They were patient and accommodating for a birthday celebration. The only issue I had was there was 1 bathroom stall inside the restaurant, which was always occupied. There were more bathrooms on the 2nd floor where I believe the Living Room Lounge was located. Skip. The only redeeming thing was the chocolate cake to give it 2/5 stars. Vibe: Interior looks like a simplified Lure in SoHo. One unisex bathroom for the entire restaurant. Hostess acting like she's doing you a favor by seating you. Staff become dismissive after realizing you're not ordering more drinks. Food: Seafood plateau - fine. Don't know if it's possible to screw up shrimp cocktail and oysters. Soapbox cocktail - mentioned by others way too lemony - if the yellow windex had taste this is what it would taste like. Ricotta - not at all what you'd think it look like. A dense cheese round cut into three pieces. No flavor, overpriced. Horrible. "Signature" cavatelli - boxed pasta cooked to clump together with occasional shrimp here and there in the dish Duck - by far the most disappointing. Lots of reviews mention this being fantastic. Far from, unfortunately. It was too overcooked and rubbery. The sauce was the only redeeming thing. Chocolate caramel cake - probably the only thing I would order if I went here again. Such a great hidden gem located in the W Hotel in Union Square. The bar has a great ambiance that is warm and inviting. The bartenders are also all awesome! They truly care about how your drink tastes and do not mind to remake it if it's not to your liking. Oysters are a must. I did the chefs selection and it did not disappoint. Gulf of Mexico yellowfin tuna is AMAZING. For dinner I had the seared tuna and my partner had the Dover sole. By this point we were not very hungry and while both were delicious, would probably just do one main meal next time. The best part was I had to take a work call and upstairs there are small phone booths that are nice and quiet that make it easy! read more

This place is uber popular and the bar fills fast, that said I sat at a small table near the bar as requested. Ate: NJ fluke crudo Steelhead salmon with cippolimi Cauliflower & romesco Total: $79 There's no bread service. The fluke was blah just blah- fish & olive oil kind of a waste. This restaurant was very lively on a Monday! The food is VERY seafood focused but this was known before we went. For apps, we got the crudo sampler and the shrimp. The shrimp were already de-headed (thank goodness) and very tasty. You could tell they only used the freshest fish in the crudo. For mains, we had the lobster pasta and seared tuna. The seared tuna had a crust on it like a usual steak, but the star of the show was the lobster pasta - - delicious. Dessert was a smores cake, which had great marshmallow fluff but graham cracker cake interior was fine. Only weird piece was that the fire alarm went off for five minutes. The lights came on, but the staff instructed us to continue dining because it was the hotel's fire alarm. On my first visit here, the experience was brutal. Insanely slow service at the bar even though the place was empty. I went back to try the food. The space itself is really cute and the service was good. I can't fathom how or why they thought one unisex bathroom is sufficient for a venue of this size (they have more but it's super far and on a different floor, very weird) The food was ok but honestly nothing special. Very average which isn't good enough to warrant returning in this city. Which is super disappointing since I live right around the corner and waited for years for this to open. read more

This is a no for me. When we arrived the restaurant was empty. EMPTY! We were seated at a small table near the back. It was comfortable if a bit dark. Our server was lovely, she made great recommendations and was very accommodating without hovering. About 15 minutes into our meal, they escorted a group of 6 stoned women (who loudly proclaimed they were high) and sat them next to us, practically on top of us. In an empty restaurant on a Saturday night. An. Empty. Restaurant. We literally couldn't move without bumping into one of these "high on the devil's lettuce" ladies. I stepped into the kitchen area to discreetly speak with the manager regarding restaurant logistics. He looked me dead in the eye and said there was no place else to sit a party of 6. I literally pointed out at least 8 tables they could have been seated at, and was greeted with a blank stare. He offered to change our table but by that time our entree was already served (I will get to this....). He also said "I can't control the volume of our guests." This guy needs to be replaced, customer service was not his strength and neither was restaurant logistics. Anyhow, on to the food. We had: - Three Crudo - very good, salmon, hamachi and tuna - Uni Brioche Service with Osetra Caviar - tasty - Wood Roasted Shinnecock Clams - delicious with a great broth. You also get a lot of clams. Here is the crazy part, they give you one piece of sourdough toast. One. Piece. Of. Toast. The hubby and I had to share a single slice of toast to soak up all the delicious sauce. We asked the server for more toast (didn't specify a number) and he brought us one additional slice of toast. ONE . SLICE. Apparently, there is a bread shortage that I am not aware of. Mind you, this all occurred BEFORE I spoke to the manager about his restaurant logistical skills. - Tuna Tartar - very good if a bit overpowered by green olives. They were served with "housemade" potato chips. Sourdough toast would have been better, but again apparently this restaurant thinks there is a bread shortage...... - Spicy Lobster Cavatelli - no spice, minimal taste, the tomato sauce was similar to cheap jar sauce. Hardly any lobster. Hard Pass. - Broccolini with Black Garlic - no black garlic to be found here. Just balsamic vinegar which from what I understand mimics the taste of black garlic. Also we got about 5 short stalks of broccolini, perhaps there is another shortage that I am unaware of. - Carrot Cake - passable. This entire debacle lasted 50 minutes. A 50-minute dinner on a Saturday night in an empty restaurant. The only thing that arrived faster than our food was the check. Some may ask, "What could the manager have done?" Honestly, after the fact, not much. But he could have used basic common sense when seating guests. Unfortunately, you can't unring a bell. read more

FRESHEST SEAFOOD I'VE HAD IN AMERICA By far, the freshest seafood I have ever had in Manhattan. Likely the fresher seafood I've ever had in the United States. Everything was absolutely excellent. The lobster pasta as well as the steak with well done, french fries was an added surprise to a seafood heavy menu. Service was absolutely top-notch. The owner even came by to say hello. This place was bumpin'! Stopped in after checking out the renovated W (gorgeous) and had some drinks. While I can't speak to the seafood, the appetizer and side were delicious that we chose to nibble on (hello hot crispy fries! ). The bread also came out piping hot and was so fresh. Incredible from start to finish! My husband and I dined on Friday night at 730 and had an amazing night- this was truly a dream meal for me! I got 2 of each of the oysters (briny, fresh, the perfect mouthful), we split the prawns (succulent, perfectly spiced, delicious), and paired them with the Fall salad - 10/10 recommend. For entrees I got the spicy lobster pasta which had CHUNKS of lobster meat and the sundried tomatoes were the absolute perfect addition - it was just the right serving size and still managed to be light. My husband got the NY strip, and he loved it! For dessert he got the chocolate mousse (the caramel topping was everything) and I of course had to try the carrot cake - just as amazing as everyone says. My husband has celiac disease and we so appreciated how attentive Seahorse was without being overbearing; our waiter even suggested things he thought we would like. Drinks wise, you cannot beat the prices for the quality you get here - I got the Work Life balance, my husband got the Soapbox Social, and they were exactly the right accompaniments for our appetizers. For dinner I got a fabulous dry rosé (Peyrassol) and my husband had his favorite gin twist (Hendricks). My espresso martini was also a 10/10. And the setting....! All the soft dim lighting was romantic and on trend; truly I did not want to leave! The mural was gorgeous as was the fish scale back bar. I have used "perfect" throughout this review because this truly was a dream meal for me; I have recommended Seahorse multiple times to people in the few days since I've been here. Had a 5 pm reservation asked to be seated earlier since we were there. I was told the dining room wasn't open and offered the bar area where they only had us wait and not be seated. Then as other complected patrons walk in they were seated in the bar area and the dining area. For 20 minutes no one said a word. This remodel took time and they did a great job. Definitely worth stopping in for a drink. Be warned though, it will be loud. Our table of 4 struggled at times to hear the person across from each other during the meal. As for the food. Take the review with a grain of salt as it had just been open officially for 3days. The meal was just not what you expect. We had the crudos and mussels. Crudos were fine, but nothing special. The clams, everyone struggled to eat. It was like trying to chew on a small rubber ball. We all gave up after our second clam. The prawns were the one of the best items, a 4 out of 5. Don't bother with the duck. The rest of the table gave it 3 out of 5 and I gave it 3.5. The dover sole was tasty and we all enjoyed it. But it was nothing spectacular. IE. It just can't make up for the other dishes. So go for a drink, but skip the food. read more

Subpar food and service. Seems like most of the budget went into the decor rather than the chefs and bartenders/staff. My husband and I walked in to have dinner at the bar with modest expectations after reading some of the reviews, but unfortunately the experience was even worse. My dirty martini tasted like something you'd get at a dive bar, and the bartender then said he forgot what my husband had ordered. We ordered Kumamoto oysters, and 4 out of 6 had shell fragments in them. Terrible. One of our entrées, the shrimp cavatelli, was sandy and gritty and inedible. I had seen other reviews mentioning uncleaned shrimp but we decided to try it anyway since my husband was craving it. Unfortunately, the dish confirmed those concerns. So many issues with this restaurant, I'm sure it'll end up closing in the not so distant future. Too many good restaurant options in the neighborhood for anyone to pay such prices for second-rate food and service. read more

The food was delicious, the ambiance was lovely but the service was terrible. I came for lunch. After being seated, I waited at the table for a long time before anyone came over to me (and it wasn't busy). I didn't have a menu or water offered. That's never a great sign, and I probably should have left. When finally approached by the waiter, I ordered from the prefix menu. It took forever to get my salad.. and again a long wait for my main course. My waiter never came back to my table after he took my order. The servers dropped off my food. No one checked in with me through my meal. I wanted to order a glass of wine to have with my pasta, so I asked the server for one. He said I'll let your waiter know. NO ONE came. I was Staring at my pasta, which had grown cold while I was waiting.....and was wishing I went elsewhere. No one offered me cheese or pepper for my pasta. None of the normal courtesies were offered. I finally flagged the waiter down after I was done eating... so disappointing. After a VERY long hard week, I just wanted a nice, classy, delicious meal with good service. A quick introduction, first. We normally do not visit restaurants that just opened. There are too many kinks to work out. We were under the impression that the restaurant had been open for some time and we missed the fact that the opening took place only a couple of days prior to our visit. I was reluctant to criticize at first, but then I armed myself with the following self-serving logic: Since the restaurant doesn't accept discounted payments while working out its shortcomings, why should I be reluctant to provide my view even at this early stage of its operation. There are two entrances, one from 17th Street and another through the W hotel entrance. The direct entrance from the street will undoubtedly cause a lot of discomfort every time the door is opened in winter, unless a vestibule is constructed. Interior: The restaurant design is quite nice, kudos to Rockwell Group, with blondish wood paneling implying classicism with a nod to modernity. The low-quality painting at the ceiling, providing a reference to the sea, is a minus. Our dislike of the painting is not due to its primitivism, but exactly what we said quality. Service: Still learning but extremely eager and accommodating. Flatware: Quite inexpensive. The sauce boat could be purchased for $1. Food: Crudo tasting: Clean pleasant taste. Portion is quite small. Charred octopus: Overdone. Part of smaller diameter tentacles were burnt to the point of being sour. The menu described potato puree as an accompaniment. Potato it was, but it wasn't puree in a classical sense. These were potato chunks with some puree. Heirloom tomato salad: Mélange of not-fully ripened tomatoes with a simple dressing that could benefit from more acidity. At this point we got surprise #1. When we asked for bread to mop the dressing, we were told that the restaurant doesn't carry bread. Don't know whether bread prohibition is temporary or it is written in the restaurant's pledge to keep diners slim. Poached swordfish: A generous portion of somewhat bland fish. Some citrus-based sauce would help. Dover sole: Well-worth the $68. Broccolini, with what seemed like a tinge of vinegar, were quite good. Wine: Chateau Peyrassol rose was quite watery; Clos Floridene Graves white was quite good. Dessert: Surprise #2. The restaurant did not have the dessert (Éclair) we ordered from the menu. Tiramisu was not available, as well. To their credit, they provided 2 different cakes at no charge. Coffee: Surprise #3. After placing an order for a latte, we were informed that the coffee machine is broken, and we can only get regular coffee. We declined. Toilet facilities: Surprise #4. There is only one toilet for the whole restaurant. It is heavily used by numerous restaurant staff. Hence, it is almost impossible to get in despite restaurant occupancy estimated at 30% at the time of our visit. I was sent to the hotel's bathroom located on the second floor. BTW, I finally was able to negotiate my way into a single bathroom. I found faucets that were very difficult to turn. Conclusion: Great location, promising service. I am sure the absence of bread and desserts from the menu will be revolved in short time by either a deal with a bakery or acquiring on-staff personnel. Ditto with the coffee machine. Restaurants of this level have more than one coffee machine. Food improvements are much more difficult to attain-will see what happens. BTW, toilet facilities are much more difficult to resolve. read more
