I had a great experience with breakfast/brunch at Sear. Not only was the food delicious, but the customer service was exemplary. There was a wide variety of breakfast options including but not limited to personalized omelets, fresh waffles, rich pancakes, and well- seasoned home-style potatoes. Sear has breakfast options that will cater to your tastes! What really stood out to me, however, was the warm and welcoming service from the employees. I'd like to take a moment to especially shout out Anthony. He was friendly and very helpful. I appreciate all the lengths Anthony reached to ensure that we had an outstanding breakfast and received everything we asked for. The cooking staff was also very helpful and patient. They were always respectful and ready to serve each customer despite being busy (Sunday rush). I had the Smoked Trout Hash. Sooooo delicious and creamy from the fluffy poached egg. The vegetables were nicely sized and not soggy. I get free breakfast upstairs at the Marriott but today I missed it, and am so glad I missed it. They have a breakfast buffet for $27. I can't eat a big breakfast but it looks good and the tables around me got it. The restaurant this morning was pretty peaceful like a cafe. Two days in a row I was received with the statement "we are on a 30 minute wait". Apparently the kitchen is too busy to serve customers even though most of the tables are empty. Seems pretty lame to me. Once I did get seated I had the lamb chops and they were excellent. I had glass of Merlot with it chosen from a decent wine list. For desert I had a peach cobbler that was very much to my taste. The best part is they have Benedictine. If you never had that and enjoy liqueur you really should try it. My only complaint is they didn't serve it in the right kind of glass. Overall I'd say it's worth the price, assuming the kitchen isn't too busy. read more

What a great meal to finish off an amazing weekend. My family ordered apps for kids for dinner...Mac and cheese and crab cakes. They loved them, to the point that my son ordered 2nds on the crab cakes. My wife ordered the lamb chops and loved every bite, as I did did with the pork chops. Our waiter, Patrick, enhanced the meal with a great attitude and helpful suggestions. We finished the meal with the pecan dessert. It's a shame we are leaving tomorrow. read more

Here at the hotel on business and went to Sear for dinner. It's a hotel restaurant so my expectations were pretty low. I started with the "atomic horseradish shrimp". The waitress warned me that it wasn't that hot but what the hell???? It might have been the most watered down cocktail sauce I ever ate. Right now, immediately change your menu or fix it - nothing is simpler than adding horseradish. How does the waitress know to warn customers but you don't fix that ???? Followed by the Kansas City strip. Steak was pretty good but really salty. Got the tomato chutney on the side and that was pretty good as well. Lighting is too high, feels like a hotel lounge. Hands down the best looking hotel restaurant I've ever dined in, but the food fell flat for me. When you walk in, the venue looks so upscale, but I assure you, it is not. The breakfast potatoes were cold, had absolutely no taste, and were borderline rubbery. The biscuits were just ok; perhaps they would have been better if they were kept warm. I didn't try their omelette because I don't really care for eggs. The French toast was dry, over cooked and again, cold. I totally understand that I paid for the breakfast buffet, BUT IT'S ALMOST $30. For a $30 breakfast I should be unbuttoning my pants after the meal. How about you cook the food as people are coming in? This breakfast tasted like it was all cooked at the beginning of their shift, and there I was, at 9:30, eating what was leftover from the early morning rush. On a positive note, their baked goods were decent and my server was friendly and attentive. I also like the high booths, which helps to create a bit of privacy in the restaurant's open layout. I'm leaving this place a little hungry... after $30... because if I'm gonna eat all these extra calories, I should at least enjoy it. Had horrible service before we were even able to utter a word! My friend and I stay at the Hilton and we were on our way back to our hotel, so we were using the sky view to get back. On our way back we thought about eating somewhere, and we saw Sears. We decided to see what Sears had on their menu. While we were looking at the menu a black woman in a suit(she works there) approached us snickering. I think her name was sheryl, but I'm not 100% sure what her name was. At first she asked us what we're looking for and we told her we were looking at the menu. She then proceeded to say that "high velocity is opening soon, they are a sports bar and have a lot of T.Vs". At first I didn't pick up on her classism, and ageism (my friend and I are 21 year old black women), but when I thought about it, I realized how disrespectful her comment was. We had dinner year last night with some of my girlfriend's relatives during their attendance at the Links Conference for the region. This restaurant is located within the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Downtown Atlanta where their conference was taking place. The service was pretty good, but the waiter inadvertently spilled a cousin's Chardonnay on the floor after we finished our drinks when she wasn't finished. We did not have any appetizers. I ordered to the Scallops dish. The scallops had a good flavor but were slightly overcooked. They were prepared in a pan-seared fashion. They were served with Southern Succotash which has a tendency to be slightly dry if not prepared with a lit of gravy from the lima beans and corn, and it hand that same effect on the dish. It was served over a helping of cheese grits, which were a little too thick and were less creamy like I prefer my grits prepared for the most part. The plate required some additional seasoning. We did not order dessert. The over experience was good but mediocre at best in terms of taste and service. The plate did have a beautiful presentation, however. read more

My husband and I went to Sear after checking in to the hotel. We were hungry after a long day of airports and family emergencies and were hoping for a good meal. My my husband and I are gold elite members with Marriott. Unfortunately everything we had at the restaurant was poorly made, and way overpriced. My husband had the dry aged steak that cost $49- it tasted like straight hamburger. Not seasoned, definitely not dry aged, over cooked, and tasted like it was frozen. He also had the fingerling potatoes, and unfortunately those were undercooked and were definitely not as good as they sounded on the menu. I had the pickled shrimp starter, which lacked taste and flavor. There was no real pickling taste, and I began to question what I was eating... I also had the Georgia greens salad. It came with too much dressing, and the greens on the bottom were mushy, not how a salad should taste. Nothing we had tasted fresh and we were very disappointed. I also ordered wine, and it came in a filthy glass- I had to grab another one off a neighboring table because somehow those were much cleaner than what my wine was actually served in. The manager was going around asking tables how the food was, we were honest and he did take 20% off the bill, but to be honest that was nowhere near enough. I also heard the women at the table behind us send back her food. Overall, a huge disappointment. The quality just isn't there. Don't go here expecting a great meal. read more

The Salmon is too simple. If you want something with almost no seasoning (I couldn't taste any, even salt) it's a good choice otherwise. My wife's "simple fish" was fantastic (sea bass). Ironically the names should have been switched. I'm very disappointed that a restaurant which charges about $30 for a fish plate would serve such terrible salmon. The microwave filets from the freezer at Walmart had more taste. Otherwise, the drinks were good and the waitress tried to do everything she could to rectify my displeasure. I was staying at the Marriott while 6000 of my friends were in town for a convention. Four of us went to Sear for a quick lunch. The look and feel of the restaurant were fine. Our service was a bit lackadaisical, which was a problem because we needed to be in and out in a bit less than an hour. I tried the "big three" -- a $15 package that includes "Today's soup, sandwich of the day (ask your server, please no substitutions), Caesar or mixed green salad." The sandwich is a half-sandwich, as one might easily imagine; but this is not noted on the menu. The soup that I got as part of this package was a beef & barley soup that merited no more than two stars: its taste and its consistency were both pretty thin. The sandwich (grilled cheese with some bacon) was pretty good; the salad (a caesar that was served in a not-too-musucule cylinder) was tasty as well. All in all, the experience was just barely A-OK. I liked Sway (in the neighboring Hyatt) a lot better for lunch. read more

This was by far the best meal we've had in years. To start, I had the crab cakes that had very little breading and it was mostly the best tasting crab. The sauce was amazing, too. My husband had the shrimp cocktail. It was perfectly seasoned with the best homemade cocktail sauce. My husband ordered the striped bass with elote and arugula salad. The bass was smoky and the elote was like a southern smoked cream corn. It was incredible. I ordered the burger with pressed potatoes. The potatoes were roasted then deep fried and served with Parmesan cheese. It was out of this world with the creamy and crispy bits. The burger had 2 patties and a sherry mushroom mixture and a black garlic aioli. I was fantastic. Everything was so go that even though we were stuffed we ordered the southern banana pudding. Let me start by saying, I don't like banana pudding. The Chantilly cream on top was beyond words. We will dream about this meal until we get a chance to go back. The chef came out to speak with us he is the absolute best. Our waiter, Phyllis, was super sweet and answered all our questions. The best part about the meal is they don't use soy. I have an allergy; therefore, I must analyze every restaurant before eating. We will definitely be back. We are already planning our next trip. read more

You'd think coming to an in-hotel supposed luxury steakhouse during a gigantic nerd convention with nearly 60,000 people present would set the stage for some kind of catastrophic nightmare dining experience, right? So color me pleasantly surprised when a steak at Sear ended up being easily the best meal of a Dragon*Con experience! I'll be honest, I'd never had the compulsion to come to Sear before. In all prior Dragon*Cons, or even when I used to work for SunTrust, I never had any inclination to visit Sear before. If I wanted a good steak, I could probably rely on myself to cook it up better at home, or there was Morton's a hop skip and a jump outside the Marriott. But present company suggested we go to Sear, and considering they had very minimal wait compared to the adjacent High Velocity (which kind of stinks), Sear it would be. Now if you can ignore the occasional Pikachu and She-Ra waltzing around to and from their own tables, Sear does a pretty convincing impression of a luxurious steakhouse. Lush with faux-elegance on account of Marriott money, the place is spacious, mood-lit, with tablecloths and cloth napkins to complete the experience they're trying to sell to justify $30+ a la carte entrees. Service was solid, and there was little complaints, except some delay on bringing out some potatoes, but considering the poor service everywhere else on account of 60,000 people pelting every place with business, it was pretty good in comparison. I ordered a ribeye steak, and it was served to me on an iron platter, which delighted me. The fact that on the menu, they took the time to define the levels of done-ness of steak (in spite of the fact that anything higher than medium is asinine IMO), it kind of gave me faith that the chefs were going to know how to cook them. And it turned out to be pretty much perfect. I said medium-rare, and I got a pretty perfectly medium-rare steak. Nicely seared on the outside, and right at that perfect blend of pink to red in the center. Juicy, extremely flavorful, and I ate way more of the fatty and gristle parts than I probably should have, it was that good. Not be ignored was the twice-baked sour cream potato I ordered as a side. A tasty skin on account of being baked twice, but then the potato itself is creamy and has zero necessity for any added salt, pepper or additional butter. It was also kind of absurdly large, and somewhat of a joke for it to be eaten on top of 20 ounces of succulent ribeye. Meals for just about everyone was around roughly $35-45 a person at my party. I'd say that the fact that we didn't have to wait nearly as long as we would have anywhere else within walking distance makes the cost completely worth it, but frankly, for the quality of the food that I had gotten, it wasn't a big deal. I'm not going to pretend like it's nothing, but the occasional splurge is totally worth it when the resulting food is outstanding. Without question, it was the best meal I had during a four-day convention weekend, and my friends and I have decided that it's worth making an annual thing for every Dragon*Con in the future. This review is for the weekend buffet only. My family was staying here for the weekend so we came here for a brunch buffet out of convenience. Let me first say that the restaurant (as well as the rest of the hotel) was beautiful, sleek, and modern. But everything else went downhill after the hostess led us to our tables. Even on our way to being seated we noticed multiple uncleared tables piled with plates. I could already tell there was lack of communication within the wait staff. Indeed, we waited for five minutes at our tables before anyone even acknowledged us. The rest of the service was really slow as well. (Yes, it's possible to have slow buffet service.) Our silverware and drinks did not come until after we got our first plate of food, and none of our dirty plates got taken away until the very end. Now onto the food... I can't believe this place had the audacity to charge $24 for the weekend buffet! It carried the usual breakfast fare, but the quality of the food did not match up to the cost. The scrambled eggs were too dry, the biscuits fell apart before they even made it on our plates, and the bread selection was poor. Plus, the buffet was slow to refill their food. (Do you sense a common theme here?) They even ran out of regular cream cheese. At the end of the meal, the only thing that kept me from fuming was the fact that I didn't have to pay for the meal. read more

Generally speaking, the restaurants you find in hotels are compromises. You're too lazy or tired or whatever to leave the comfort of your hotel to find an actual restaurant, so you think, "What the fuck" and eat at the hotel restaurant, which is invariably high priced AND craptacular. We went to DragonCon in Atlanta this past weekend (so . . .. much . . . .debauchery) and stayed in the Marriott Marquis, home to the AWESOME Sear. Sear is kinda cool looking inside-- it's *very* HGTV-- you can easily imagine Candice sexually harrassing her design team as Paul works on the uber-modern ultra-tall custom banquettes and Chico installs hand-blown pendant lamps. The flatware is Wedgwood, for fuck's sake. But despite all that, or maybe kinda because of it, Sear has a very relaxed, pleasant dining atmosphere. Now let me get to the real deal: HOLY FUCKING SHIT THE FOOD WAS SO GOOD. And not hotel good but GOOD good. If we lived in Atlanta, we would go here just to eat. I had a shrimp and corn chowder that was so sublime, so delicately layered, just creamy enough, just hinting at spiciness, that I wanted to drop my pants and fuck it right then and there. I also had a very classic iceberg wedge salad that was updated with a sprinkling of gorgonzola and a light handful of bacon (so watch out, vegetarians-- I had to pick mine off). The gorg wasn't the best choice, I thought, but it was delicious nonetheless. They have a full bar, and I had a great sidecar as well. My husband had a meatloaf/mashed potato combo that he said was awesome. It looked like real care and effort was taken to make the meatloaf nuanced and layered-- you could see how moist it was throughout-- and the mashed potatoes had just enough sour cream and garlic to make them perfect. The service was, quite simply, some of the best service I've ever had at a restaurant anywhere. The portions are huge, so we never had dessert there, but they looked incredible and if they're as good as the rest of the stuff we had there, you can bet they are awesome. read more

The skirt steak was so bad, 3 of the 3 people who ordered it would not even eat it. It just sat on their plate. For... the whole course. Finally, after I was done eating for a while, the server came around and, noting that most people had not touched their plates, asked "was everything ok?" Um. Not big on taking hints. How could you go wrong with chocolate cake? It's possible folks. Bleh. Straight out of a can... or something. Also not fit to eat. I also had requested a black napkin since I was wearing black wool pants... I was promised one over and over again but, I'm sure you can see where this is headed... one never arrived. I've been to Sear twice, for breakfast and again for lunch with my boss. For breakfast they have a fantastic buffet with lots of options, both healthy and artery-clogging. I remember the yogurt parfait best, which says more about me than about the food. For lunch I had a turkey club on toasted sourdough. The turkey was real oven-roasted turkey, not Oscar Meyer mystery meat. (Seriously. Meat with "slurry"? What the hell is that?) The toasted sourdough seemed a wee bit dry for a bread, but that may have been me just gabbing away instead of, you know, eating. I didn't particularly notice the service, which is to me a good thing. Not hovering to the point that I wonder if they're eavesdropping, but everything gets cleared away promptly and I never waited for my water glass to be refilled. I love how they've got hundreds of bottles of wine against the glass wall separating the restaurant from the hotel lobby. Someday I will have to be back to partake of the vino. The booths have little pillows in them, which is weird to me for a business lunch, but might be more appealing if you're in town for the convention or something. read more

I'm not a big fan of this place. We were staying at the Marriott and I was excited to find out our friends wanted to meet us at a Steakhouse for dinner. After seeing the menu, I realized this was one of those expensive places..the ones where everything on the menu is ala carte. My filet did not come with any vegetables or sides, it's all separate. So after I accepted that, I'm thinking this $36 ala carte steak better be great. Now in my mind I'm comparing it to one of my favorites, Ruth Chris, or Morton's, the fancy ones that also have the ala carte structure. I asked for the steak medium but it came out practically rare. I ate a few bites, and cut through the whole thing hoping the temperature was cooked more somewhere inside. I'm not one that likes to send food back to the kitchen but I couldn't eat a blood red steak, so I did. It came back about 10 minutes later and it was cooked closer to Medium this time, but honestly, the flavor was just not there. This was no Ruth Chris meal.. Other people in my party seemed to enjoy their food a bit more than me, but no one was raving about this place. The service was only mediocre too. We never got dessert menus, until asking, and once we did, the selections were pretty mundane so we skipped it. Our friends that tried to make reservations said they never got to make them because they never got called back after leaving them on their answering machine as instructed. Overall, while this place looks nice and is convenient, it's just underwhelming. My $36 steak was not as flavorful as say a $15 Applebee's or Outback steak. I was staying at the Marriot for a week for a conference. The night of July 4th, after returning to the hotel from the conference, it was raining, which limited our options for the night. Three friends and I decided to try Sear, since several people we knew had spoken well of is place. Our reservation was for 7:45, and we were seated promptly. It was all downhill from there. Our server mentioned that the special for the night was a salad, 4 ribs and a BBQ Chicken breast with mashed potatoes and collard greens, with a slice of strawberry shortcake for dessert, all for $30. I'm not a HUGE fan of steak, so I opted for the special, while the other three ordered steaks with sides. As I was finishing my beer, I realized that my salad still had not arrived. This was close to 25 minutes after ordering! Seriously? Was there a hydroponics lab in the kitchen that they were harvesting for my salad? We saw our server for the first time in what felt like hours, and I asked her if there was a problem with getting the salad. She said she'd check for me, and the salad arrived a few minutes later. Unfortunately, it was DRENCHED with dressing to the point that there was a puddle of dressing in the bottom of the bowl. Needless to say, I was unable to finish the salad. Close to 20 minutes later (now around 50 minutes after ordering) our entrees arrived. The steaks were prepared very well, according to the others, and tasted very good. However, the steak knives had the sharpness of dull butter knives, and the guys were literally tearing their steaks apart instead of cutting. My ribs were tasty, and so was the chicken. Unfortunately, the mashed potatoes were cold. We waited.... and waited... and waited for the sides to show. They never did. I had finished the chicken and ribs, and the steaks were eaten as well, and the sides were never delivered. At this point, we finally had enough and asked to see a manager. He showed a few minutes later and asked if there was a problem. After we had finished with the list of issues he asked us what he could do to make us happy. Are you kidding me? Why he didn't automatically offer something and THEN ask if that would help, I have no idea. I finally had to ask him to do just that. He offered to take the charge for the sides off of the bill (Wow, thanks! You mean we don't have to pay for the sides that we never got?) and deduct 20% from the bill. I would have liked for more to be done, but at that point, we just wanted to get out of there. Oh, and my dessert was offered to me after is mess. I politely declined. I can understand that sometimes, the kitchen gets backed up, etc. All it would have taken to keep us happy would have been for someone to come over occasionally to keep us updated, maybe offer a round of drinks, and we would have been fine. Good G*d, salt your grits while they cook...Who in the verve doesn't cook their grits in salted liquid???? Apparently, Sear. Gah. Seriously? If I'm splurging on cheese grits, I'd like them to taste like something, thanks...the butter wouldn't separate as quickly, either...double bonus!!! Or in this case, two strikes. So...the wait was understandable, given A-mart hours, but service was unbelievably slow / absent (like, as in "I wish I re-directed the a-holes at my table ordering "Market value" or always nonspecific special options, so I could just ballpark bill, spit ball tip, cover in cash, and not wind up wasting hours of my life waiting, after meal, for any sort of response. Clients. SMH. Ugh.). They seem to have a fair number of runners, table busers, hosts, managers, and folks just randomly walking around observing...but not remotely enough servers. Hand on the bible, it literally took as long for our plates to be cleared after desert and to receive / pay check as it took for the entire other part of our meal. Including the wait before being seated. Yeah... My dining companion kept trying to get the hostess and / or manager to deal with us so we could get out of there earlier...didn't work. One of my clients put his head down on the table. Really. Head on the table. Like a 2nd grader. Server was covering a fairly large amount of territory, unfortunately she had little to no support...which made for annoyed customers and cranky staff, IMHO.
