We have been coming to Lake Lure for three years now and we have come to Highlands every time! Each visit has been in a new location. This year they were forced to move out of Chimney Rock Village because the half of the town was wiped out by Hurricane Helene. I was very excited to come support them through this tragedy because their food is simply amazing! I ordered the prime rib and it was fantastic. We had a large party and ever stated how good their meals were. If you like upscale dining, this is your place in Lake Lure. Don't let the outside of this restaurant fool you. Their new location is nice. They revamped the space and the outside patio is adorable. The inside was pleasant and comfortable. Our waiter was multitasking as a waiter, food runner and bartender. So he was attentive as best he could. He did take the time to talk over menu items and even create a custom cocktail for my friend. He was awesome! There was some confusion about our reservation and our table was given to another party. It was unfortunate and did sour my experience. With that said I will always support this place as it is an amazing restaurant that I want to stay in business!

Absolutely top-tier food! Don't be fooled by the unassuming signage and location: they just lend a hole-in-the-wall, hidden treasure vibe to this lovely place. My husband and I came here for an anniversary dinner and were blown away by everything we ordered, especially the Korean Short Ribs, Fish and Chips, and Mango glazed Wings. The Calamari and Fried Green Tomatoes were also good, and though they were out of the beer I ordered, our excellent and personable server, Katie, suggested a similar one that may have been even more what I was craving! We hope to be back next time we're in the area, and will send anyone else their way. (Just a note: the restaurant is actually named "The Highlands Reserve Kitchen and Bar," not "Preserve.")

Oysters Rocker-fellow, crab cakes. French Onion Soup was also yummy.

Finding seats at the bar for six is no easy task on a Friday night so whether the stars aligned or knowing Margaret the always friendly and sometimes professional bartender was the reason for it, it was the perfect place to enjoy a few amazing cocktails and a snack after driving the better half of the day. The lounge is easily accessible from the porch or the lobby of the hotel, I won't say it's small but it is cozy. There's an oddly shaped bar along the back wall and a few tables window side otherwise it's standing room only. Margaret runs the show and if you're looking for a little harmless bantering then she'll give you all you want, she'll also pour you legendary cocktails that will have you wanting just one more no matter how long you stay. After finishing my go to summertime drink Redbull & Tito's while the sun set behind the mountains it was time to test the bartender's skill set - nothing's better than a barely dirty Ketel One martini shaken cold, up with a few cheese stuffed olives, well she quickly corrected my description of a cocktail that I've been consuming for decades - I guess the correct term is a slutty martini verses the barely dirty terminology. I may have deserved that since I did ask her if she knew how to make a great martini (see attached photo) I think the photo proved she's made a few and the taste validated any doubt I may have had - it was delicious. There's lots to do in Lake Lure although it may appear otherwise, but one should experience this place if possible...

The place was very clean and well maintained. Food: We were blown away by the food. I was amazed by what we ordered. My husband had their 'Monte Cristo' sandwich and LOVED it. He said it was the best sandwich he's ever had. I had their 'Catfish & Grits' which were delicious. It was packed with so much flavor. I loved the pickled onions that came on top of the dish. The catfish and grits dish hit all the tasting notes. It was sweet, savory, and a little sour with the pickled onions. I LOVED it. We will definitely be back during our trip in North Carolina. We recently popped in yesterday after securing a reservation via Resy to celebrate our anniversary. We were seated at our table with a thoughtful handwritten card thanking us for celebrating with them! Our waitress was fantastic, and they even provided us with complimentary bubbly half pours to commemorate the milestone. Between the two of us, we split the cheeseboard, Brussels sprouts (which are so unique, and one of our favs!), and the poutine. The cheeseboard really is a nice way to kick off the meal, and highly recommend it--so many goodies to choose from. I love how Resy also allows you to specify where in the restaurant you'd like to sit depending on availability--we went with the high top nook spot, which is really special/cozy for two people. Parking is a breeze--even if their lot is full, the post office lot/tyson lot is just a short walk (and it's still not paid parking anywhere downtown).

The restaurant and patio bar are within walking distance to other spots in downtown Black Mountain, easily walkable if you are staying at an Airbnb in the local area like we were. The cocktails were glorious. On the first night, Puck's Potion and Negroni were very enjoyable. We found ourselves at the outdoor bar with the patio behind us, surrounded by quaint shops offering various retail and service options. The bartender that served us was super cool on the first night. We didn't have to wait for stools and enjoyed our cocktails on high-top seats. The second time we went, which was our last night in town, we had a reservation and went downstairs into the cellar. Watch your step as you descend the stairs so you don't trip. It was lovely to enjoy the libations and vibrations with my wife on her birthday week as we enjoyed Bahn mi with mustard-glazed roasted pork and falafels. The host came back and said there wouldn't be a problem as long as it was an inside table. When the waitress arrived with the water we asked her for two Bloody Marys and we went to serve ourselves from the buffet Food was delicious starting with the omelette station and the rest of the items including the prime rib. The drinks never arrived and the waitress never came back with water, she actually never came to our table, we had to ask for water to the busser same for the check. I am not sure what their system is but looks chaotic since you help yourself to the food it should be fairly easy to assign zones or tables to each server. We walked out to the veranda and came back in the building to seat in the lounge where a pianola was on auto play, really nice environment that takes you back a few decades. Margret was our server somehow I don't think this was by accident I had met her a few days earlier at the hotel bar - she has been here for years and years and some of our friends have been enjoying her amazing personality and high level service for a decade or more. Once seated she offered to put our drink orders in while we explored the feast laid out in the adjoining room, the drinks are made at the hotel bar but they have a table set up to allow you to customize your specialty drinks i.e. Bloody Mary's are amazing before any modifications. The food was simple but elegantly displayed, the quality of the product was exceptional and the preparation was very creative and professional. I started at the omelette station two burners and a limited selection of ingredients but all delicious and being I'm not a veggie guy the meats and cheese exceeded my expectations. The neighboring stations were both carving stations, beef and ham both cooked to the perfect temperature and very tender and flavorful - yes I made two trips. I tried a few of the other sides trying my best to stay away for the carbohydrates that most of the side dishes bring with them. Well as much will power and restraint that I have it all slowly eroded away each time I passed the dessert table. The chocolate fountain surround by sliced pineapple, strawberries and cubes of moist cake, lemon and chocolate pies, cheese cake, chocolate cake, cookies and omg peach cobbler - trust me you can gain a few pounds just by being close to this table. The service was spectacular and the total package price is ridiculously reasonable - I don't think you need to lower your expectations to throughly enjoy this brunch but you do need to keep things in perspective this is a small community and this nostalgic hotel / restaurant puts it all out there so enjoy...
