Well, unfortunately we took in our laptop to Seattle Laptop last year when we were dealing with a broken powerjack. The job took two and a half weeks to do and we were charged a couple hundred dollars, which would have been fine if it had been fixed. Less than a year later the powerjack broke again and this time we took it to Advanced Laptop, who charged us a cheaper, flat rate for the job and had it back to us in two days, stating that Seattle Laptop never really fixed it to begin with, just did a "temporary fix". Basically so much damage had been done because it wasn't fixed to begin with (and we know because in between the two jobs the computer's cords were never touched and sat on a table), the laptop was basically one more job away from irrepairable. I hate to give Seattle Laptop such a bad review, but come on. It's depressing to pay so much money and later hear we were basically screwed over. read more

I paid $65 for a diagnostic workup for my laptop screen. The tech replaced a part without having to replace the screen but it still didn't work. They offered to replace the screen but told me it would cost more that the laptop's worth. Made sense to me. The plus side is that they didn't charge me for installing a part that didn't fix the original problem. The minus side is that my keyboard sticks after they reassembled it. I'm most bothered by this item in their repair contract: "...Seattle Laptop is not responsible for loss of, or damage to computer equipment...left for repair in case of fire, theft...". Now why wouldn't you be responsible for items left under your care???? read more

Had a 13 y/o iMac that wouldn't turn on. Called Apple, said it was too old; took to Geek Squad, same reply but referred me to Seattle Laptop. OMG! Dan is the man! He was friendly, knowledgeable and great to meet. He took my sick iMac, and got it up and running within less than a week. All good, and I am one happy camper. I am a highly tech savvy person. I can spot a fake a mile away. I fix everything except hardware i.e. screens, hinges etc. These guys are extremely knowledgeable, unassuming and kind. I have heard of at least a half dozen stories of these guys helping people for no charge if it was a simple fix. I needed a very old school DIN plug keyboard adapter to work on a obsoleted digital sound board. They didn't have the adapter but they did me one better. They gave me an old Keyboard out of their recycle bin that had the correct connector on it. No charge. I really like to support local business and from all that I can see they are well deserving of your and my business. read more

So my kid is starting up his 2nd semester of college and his laptop conked out. I figured it would cost $200-300 to fix the thing and told him as such. He begged for me to take it to a technician, and being a softie I decided to give up part of lazy Sunday. Of course most places weren't open on Sunday - but as it happens Seattle Laptop was. I went in, and met Dan. Really chill dude, he first looked at the AC adapter that came with the machine and as expected it wasn't working. Then he swapped it for one that he had. That worked. I paid the $50 for the new adapter and would have walked out happy because that totally fixed the problem - except one thing: Dan noticed that the bottom of the laptop was missing screws and some of the ones that were still in there were loose. He took his box of left over screws and a screwdriver and made sure the laptop case was tight. He totally didn't need to do that, but it made me appreciate Dan and Seattle Laptop that much more. The people who work at Seattle Laptop are friendly and easy to talk with, so I don't want to complain about them, but their service left me unhappy. I've brought computers to other places, but since Seattle Laptop is within walking distance of my house, I decided to try it out and brought my computer to them. They fixed my laptop's keyboard by just putting in a new one which was fabulous. It sucks missing keys, and they were able to put a whole new keypad on within a few minutes. Very good. BUT when it came to a sound issue I was dealing with, namely the sound quit on my computer, I left it with them for a week to have a look at it. I was about to go overseas with the computer so unfortunately could not leave it with them longer. When I returned before I was to catch my flight, they told me they could find nothing wrong and that it could possibly be a motherboard issue. It basically sounded like it was hopeless of ever getting sound on my laptop again. They suggested a little usb sound plug thing (which I don't remember the name of- would allow me to hear sound through headphones if plugged into it), which we tried and there was still no sound whatsoever coming from my computer. I was pretty upset at that point, and what made it worse is that they charged me for spending time on trying to fix it WHEN THEY DIDN'T EVEN FIX IT OR GIVE ME ANY HOPE IN EVER GETTING IT TO WORK AGAIN. So, here I sit overseas, listening to music, using skype to chat with my friends and fam....WITH SOUND FROM ABOVE MENTIONED COMPUTER. I fixed it MYSELF. It was some setting issues in my computer that made me able to once again plug a speaker into the laptop and get sound. I hate to complain, and I know they need money to run a business and provide service, but I will not be taking my computer back to them again especially for a service they charged me for and could not fix and that I, in the end, could fix myself. read more

Now, when we got it back, they'd forgotten to re-plug the touchpad, but I called them, and they fixed that on the spot, and with much apologizing. Great guys, good work, and the jack works fine. I see at least one review from someone who had a similar job done and was unsatisfied, and, well, it's only been a week or so since I had mine done, so I can't say for sure, but I know they were uber friendly and helpful when I came back at them...once for the touchpad issue, and once for another issue that was clearly unrelated to their fix. So I was a bit skeptical about an cramped joint on Aurora near Greenlake with bars on the windows. It is really about the opposite of an Apple store. But you see, I can't afford the white coat treatment so I rolled the dice and surprise! they hooked me up right. I would love a new computer but sadly that is not in the cards right now. Then - I damaged my 12 year old powerbook and needed a screen replacement which I was going to have done for 250 or something at a repair shop. I called Seattle Laptop and the agent on the other end tells me that he can swap my hard drive out into one of the many old machines that they had in the back. I say ... mmm, okay. So now, not only do I have a machine with a nice clear screen - at no extra charge the tech upgrades my memory card (again my machine is kinda ancient so the cards are worth very little) and when I pick it up they give me a battery that has limited life BUT now I do not have to have it tethered to the power at all times. So yes, you will not see gleaming rows of shinny new Macs on pristine white counters. For me however, I think they did a solid job of not just fixing the problem at a really good value BUT ALSO upgraded my machine JUST BECAUSE THEY COULD HELP A BROTHER OUT! The second time I got stuck during a hard disk upgrade with screws. I just used Seattle Laptop for the first time and had a great experience. I'm a college student. So when my laptop wouldn't charge because of the pin plug coming unattached and falling inside I had to get it fixed asap. I've never needed to get a laptop repaired and wasn't sure where to go, the guys at Geek Squad actually referred me to Seattle Laptop because they would be faster and cheaper. (Way cool of them too.) The guys at Seattle Laptop were great. They were very nice and professional to work with, got my laptop done in less time than they quoted, and the price was quite reasonable. They even fixed the sticky spacebar that has been driving me crazy, that I hadn't even mentioned to them. Hopefully I don't need anymore laptop repairs anytime soon...but if I do I'll be sure to go back! read more

Blended review (5 star for one experience a few years ago and 2 stars for recent visit). First, they rescued a laptop and extracted all needed data -- that was several years ago -- 5 stars for that experience. More recently, I took a laptop in to be wiped clean so I could give it to a relative of mine, a data back-up and installation of MS Office. I was very clear upon drop-off what I wanted. The intake tech and I even had a discussion about whether I had the email with the security key for the Office suite -- I said "no" but he said he found it on a sticker on the side of the adaptor. I dropped it off on a Saturday and was told it would be ready in about week. I received a call more than a week and half later asking me a question about what was to be done so they hadn't even started working on it yet. I needed it two days later and it was ready by then. When I arrived to pick it up I was told that it would take about 20 minutes to transfer the backed-up data -- no had told me this before and I didn't have 20 minutes to wait. Very poor communication on their part. Also, the Office suite I had on the computer beforehand was not activated. Then the tech proceeded to speak condescendingly to me about how I must have misunderstood that Windows and Office are two different things -- really?? When I told him in knew the difference between the two and that I had specifically discussed Office with the other tech, he proceeded to argue with me about what I had asked for on drop-off. They do a good job, technically, but don't count on them meeting their own deadlines and don't expect very good communication from them. 2 stars for the most recent experience. Parking is a bitch if you go anytime the bus lane is open. read more

Back in '08 the hard-drive crashed on my Toshiba laptop. They recovered all of the data and installed a new hard-drive at exactly the cost they quoted me and in 3 days rather than the week they had initially thought. Great, right? Well, then 2 years ago I had a friend whose old desktop stopped functioning. I brought it to these folks and they said they would recover whatever they could and get it back to me in a week. 8 days later, still no call from them. I called and guess what? They can't find the computer or any record of me dropping it off. The next morning I received a call with an apology - they found the computer and were able to recover everything but the desktop was done. Ok, fine. Things happen, right? That is why I called them when our now 4-year old Mac was in such poor shape. I called at the beginning of June to find out about pricing and time-frame for repairs. The screen on our laptop kept going black until you would wiggle it and it would come back on (apparently a common problem). It progressively got worse until we were unable to use it. To make matters worse, it was running slow and freezing up. The gentleman I spoke with said it was likely one of two things and he would need to see it first and that there was really nothing they could do for a Mac running slow and freezing but they would see what they could do. Ok, what do I know, right? So I told him that we were concerned about being without our computer for up to a week but that we were going out of town at the end of the month. No problem, he said, give us a couple days heads up. Sunday, June 22nd I call and leave a message. No call back. Monday, late afternoon, I call and speak with a different gentleman. Go through the whole thing again and he says, yeah, yeah, bring it in on Wednesday before you go out of town and we will get to it by Friday so hopefully you will have it back early next week. Ok, fine. Husband brings it in Wednesday morning and the guy working tells him that his ONE Mac guy is out of the country and won't be back for weeks! He also said that it sounded like it "would be real difficult" and "wasn't sure how much anything would cost until we get in there". Not even able to quote different prices based on the different scenarios. Guess what? After that I did some looking around and I found My Mac Hero. He is amazing! Fixed everything! Screen, installed RAM, updated the operating system, and he reformatted my external hard-drive so that now it works with my Mac. All in 24 hours! Sounds like he can also work on PC's ;) read more

I brought my IBM here after the monitor failed. The exact same thing happened nearly 2 years ago, but it was under warranty. So I boxed it up, shipped it off to IBM, waited a week and finally got it back, good as new. But this time, the warranty was of course expired, and IBM wanted nearly $600 to fix it. Uh, excuse me? $600 to fix a three year old computer? Errr, what crack are you smoking? But I love my trusty little computer and really didn't want to buy a new one, so I went off to find a less expensive place. Of course, it's amazing how difficult it is to shop around without a computer! Stupid catch-22. Finally brought it to Seattle Laptop because they were the first place to actually answer the phone. We both knew what was wrong with it, they gave me an estimate, and I spent the extra $40 for speedy service cause two weeks with no computer makes liz a very cranky girl. And on day 3 they called up, computer fixed, within estimate, which was at least under half what IBM wanted. Only four stars because I'm pretty sure if I'd put some effort into it, I could have found a place to fix it cheaper. But they did a nice job and even if they didn't make me want to jump over the moon or anything, I'm typing this on my computer. So I'm happy. read more

My laptop suddenly lost power and I wasn't sure if the power cord died or if it was a fuse issue. The battery was already long dead. I really didn't want to deal with Best Buy, especially on a holiday weekend, and I found this place close to my home. I was helped within 2 minutes of arriving and the tech confirmed my issue was the power cord. They had one in stock specifically for my computer, unlike Best Buy who only has a generic multi-media cord. The cable was also $30 cheaper here than at the box store! I was in and out in less than 15 minutes, had a pleasant chat with the tech and back in business with my computer within an hour of it "dying" on me. I will return with any future computer issues. I had to buy a basic Windows laptop to run some lightweight software. I got a great deal ($220!). The computer came wiped of all the OEM junk, ready to go. All the stock they had out were shown working on battery power. I said I needed a little more on the memory side, he threw in an extra 1gb of ram. I bought a monitor for another purpose for $30, another great deal. I used to do this work for a living many years ago, and I appreciate the state they sold the machine in. Seattle Laptop is a great place to get an old-time feel for having your computer repaired. Dave and Dan work together here, and although I did not take advantage of all their services, they are direct, honest and polite to work with. I needed a USB wireless network adapter, and I picked one up for $30. Seattle Laptop is also a great place to find and wide range of older laptops and desktops--some with the operating system, some without--if you don't need the latest and greatest, which is definitely me. I'm still using Windows Vista, and just installed Service Pack 2 today to go with my new Infinity internet. So, I have a nine-year old system that is getting 92 Mbps download and 2.2Ghz clock speed, which is just fine for my purposes. To me, it's better to buy an older system that has already been through the wickets, so to speak, at considerable savings I might add. Don't park on Aurora, though--traffic is horrendous, so you can park along N 76th Street no problem. You can't turn left to here from northbound Aurora, however, you'll have to go up to 77th and hang a U-ey and come back. Have a nice day! read more

They insisted they had to install it themselves. When I got the laptop back, the latch was broken. I asked them to fix it, repeatedly. "Oh, that part breaks all the time on that model." Yes, but YOU broke it, I said. Please fix it, make it right. They never did. This was awhile back, so it's fair to say that they may have changed. But I sure haven't been back. read more

A key had come off my laptop, so I called to confirm that I could just walk in and have it fixed. I brought my laptop in that same day and he got right to work on my laptop. It was a quick fix, he explained to me that one of the corners of the key retainer was loose and a complete keyboard replacement would be needed for it to be fully fixed. Due to the ease and quickness of the job he didn't charge me, overall very quick and efficient service. I would definitely go back. read more

This review is for service and trustworthiness. The fan on my laptop has been on "extremely loud" mode for at least the past year. Regular office depot compressed air didn't seem to help so I attempted to take apart the laptop myself to clean out the dust -- but there were so many screws and I didn't want to damage any parts. I finally decided to call around to see how much it would cost to get someone else to take it apart to clean it. The guy who answered was super helpful and told me they can just try quickly cleaning it with their industrial-strength compressed air and for free. I had nothing to lose, so I stopped in. He told me if I was still having issues to bring it back and they'd give me a quote. Currently, it seems to have worked!. I appreciate honesty in service providers and guiding me towards a quick and easy solution first before requiring a more expensive solution. You can be sure that I will be back if I need to have more extensive repairs in the future. read more

Up front - I know almost nothing about computers. Can find the power button and push it, can put disks into the DVD drive, that's about it. Usually when I go to a computer store the employees enjoy blowing me away in about 30 seconds with way too much tech-talk, which boosts their ego but does nothing for me. Segue to... I wanted a cheap, "loseable" second laptop for travel and similar purposes. Visited Seattle Laptop and got exactly what I wanted: a laptop without a wide screen, with a DVD drive and a few basic programs (see how computer-competent I am?). I'm completely happy with my IBM Thinkpad, which does exactly what I want at a very reasonable price. Staff was very helpful, friendly, honest and NOT condescending. Only real drawback to this shop is the parking (two blocks west on a narrow side street), which actually is about like walking from the parking lot to Fry's computer section. WFH using home computer. After it seemed to die and I couldn't easily determine a cause (not unusual), I called Seattle Laptop. Because we are in the midst of the coronavirus and needing to do physical distancing, he said, yes, come in, but only one person would be allowed in at a time. He plugged in my Mac, which came right up, checked my power cord, and because there was nothing wrong, sent me on my way without charging me. I am very impressed with all of the care he took and that he was willing to see me. I really would have been stuck without my computer working. Very good service, very friendly service. read more

In Summary: Bait and Switch! Dishonest! DO NOT COME HERE! Longer version: I had my laptop diagnosed at another Mac store, called around and these guys gave me a much better price. (It was installing an SSD 1TB drive.) They said the hard drive and migration of data would be $179. So I happily drove over, but when I dropped it off, they quoted me a higher price. When I explained what I was told on the phone, they made a note and committed to honoring it. When I came to pick it up, they said the computer was still running slow and recommended more RAM. I agreed to the additional $59 for better performance and speed, and came back 3 days later. When I arrived, that's when all the real trouble began. The price shot up another $60 for the "data migration", they tried to charge me MORE for the hard drive than even their posted sign stated, they DISREGARDED the previously quoted price, and then nearly didn't give me my deposit back until I fought for it. When I finally got my laptop and equipment back, they played dumb about whether they had transferred data to the hard drive as I had requested. (It was written on the work order and in their computer system!) The hard drive wasn't even open.... they didn't do the work they agreed to! The crowning blow is that my computer doesn't work. Yep, that's right... paid them over $300 and it doesn't even work! It is super slow and Finder keeps crashing, which has never been a problem before. DO NOT GO HERE! On a Friday, late in the afternoon, I found out I had an issue with my laptop and the part where the cord plugs into the body (not on the cord, but where you put it). I took it into Seattle Laptop and within a very short time, they had worked their magic and my computer was back to life! I should note that I am a college student and my laptop died, conveniently, during the lead up to finals and I had one due just a few hours after they gave my computer back to me. I owe them my passing grade! Lifesavers, these guys are, and I will never take my computer anywhere else. I recently dropped off my computer and it took Dan two weeks to get to it and only then because I called on it a couple of times. He determined it was the battery, which he had replaced 9 months prior so installed another battery. In the process, he lost everything on my laptop and had to reinstall from my backup, however, he installed an old file - nothing newer than 2017. It's been every day for a week now on the phone or in the store with Apple. They determined the battery installed was bad so I purchased yet another battery and I still don't have all my files, downloads, addresses, etc. I would suggest you take your computer equipment in for recycle but not for repair. read more

Best Buy was going to charge me around $300 dollars to send it out, possibly replace motherboard and no guarantees on getting the files off my USB. The owner at Seattle Laptop got my files retrieved, saved and removed my USB within 15 minutes and wanted no payment! This place totally ripped me off. I needed to purchase a very basic laptop for a part time job which required a lot of websurfing. I went to this store instead of buying something off of craigslist because I wanted something reliable that wouldn't break the next day. I would have been much better off with CL though. I just needed a basic computer that could run XP and load pages quickly. First they sold me a machine that could not run XP. The guy I brought it from had assured me that if it didn't work they would exchange it for me. They never returned my phone calls, and when I finally came back in person they gave me a different computer to which they had added more RAM so that it technically - barely - met the RAM specs for XP. What they did not do or tell me was that the motherboard did not support that much RAM. it took me a few months of agonizingly slow page loads and poring over the computer specs and online help to figure out what they had done, and by then it was too late to take it back. I feel dumb for not realizing it, but then again that is why I went there, I expected them to have some integrity and not totally mislead and take advantage of their customers. And it wasn't just one sales rep, I talked to several people and got the runaround/was misinformed repeatedly. Also what's up yelp? The bottom review on this page is minimized somehow so that only the first line shows up and not the whole review. it sort of looks like a space issue, but then other places have way more reviews and have not been truncated. So I brought an IBM Thinkpad in for service. On boot it displayed "fan error". I was told it would take 10-14 days for service and cost around $180. "Sounds good", I thought. So everyday after day 14, I called and was told either that it was next in the queue or that it was currently being worked on. On day 20, I was called and told they diagnosed the problem. Get this - the fan is defective, they said. Really? You got a whole team of monkeys working back there - I asked? Ok, it was several days late, and the problem was diagnosed - but not fixed. So fix it - I say. THREE weeks later, it's fixed. What took so long - I asked? The part was very hard to find. "Hmmm" - I think sceptically. I get home and google the part number - I find six hits easily. Fine, I think. Problem fixed and at cost ($180). Now, four months later. The laptop fails with the same fan error. It's out of warranty. Not trusting Seattle laptop I take the thing apart myself. It took me about half an hour, and I discovered that they put in THE WRONG PART! I find the right part on the internet, and four days later it is now running. Cost for part on internet: $35. In short, I would never, ever take anything to this shop again. read more

About a year ago I brought my laptop, with the LCD screen functioning intermittently, to Seattle Laptop for repair. I called around before, and chose Seattle Laptop for this because they told me they had some trick equipment that could repair any loose mainboard connections for the graphics card. After the laptop sat on the shelf for a week awaiting its turn in line, they fired it up and the screen was working. Instead of determining what might be causing the intermittent function, they performed antivirus and malware cleaning (that I did not request) and charged me over a hundred dollars for that work. They advised me that if the screen stopped working again, I would be better off to junk the computer. When I brought the computer home, the screen stopped working again. I believed what they told me about the screen, so I just put the computer away and bought another one. Yesterday, I decided to take my computer apart and see if I could determine what was wrong. After removing the keyboard and the front plate, I saw that the ribbon cable for the LCD screen was slightly dislodged from its connector. I reinserted the cable firmly into the connector and the screen functions again. Ironically, I paid Seattle Laptop a few hundred dollars a couple years earlier to replace the LCD screen, and they are the ones who initially inserted that ribbon cable into the connector. When a customer describes symptoms such as those I described, an energetic, curious and interested repair company ought to do more exploring than simply turning on the computer and seeing that the screen works at that moment. Seattle Laptop once had a great reputation, but I think they've lost interest in doing first rate work. I will definitely look elsewhere next time I need a laptop repair. Finally, after I removed the keyboard and its surrounding cover, I noticed that one of the screws that holds the left side screen hinge was missing. Evidently Seattle Laptop lost that screw when they replaced the LCD screen and didn't bother to install a replacement. Reinstalling all removed fasteners is basic. Take your laptop elsewhere, people. Update: after reviewing my complaint on Yelp, the owner of Seattle Laptop called me and offered a refund for the cost of the tune-up of my computer, and mentioned that the technician who "serviced" my computer no longer works for Seattle Laptop. I received my refund yesterday and am modifying my rating as a result. read more

Walked in, needed to have a usb port fixed on my external hard drive. They were pretty friendly but looked at my hard drive for 5 seconds and said it would be a flat $150 whether or not they would be able to recover anything. Took it to PC Recycle in Bellevue who told me it would be a $10 part and 2 days time to fix it. read more
