I have had this place on my "must try" list for awhile and I'm very glad I finally got around to trying it! The service is top notch. Incredibly friendly and very helpful with the menu in sorting out which sauce pairs best with the chicken katsu and they offered up a ton of sauce samples so we can really figure out what we like the best. The teriyaki was a little on the sweet side for me, but the blue lagoon and basil sauces were delicious (even though the blue coloring messed with my head a bit lol) The chicken katsu was delicious. So fresh! It stayed crunchy even taking it to go, which is a huge plus. As great as it started, they definitely have some small areas that they could improve on. Both the udon and the white rice tasted overcooked. The textures were off a bit. The fruit salad had lots of good fruit options, but every single grape had a small stem attached to it still. Is that a huge deal? No. Is it annoying to pick off or out of your mouth? Yes. The regular salad and the veggies were almost all cabbage. I ordered the salad assuming it was some lettuce blend, but it was all shredded cabbage and I found that a bit disappointing. On the plus side, I still tasted the salad dressing and it was delicious! The inside was clean and quiet. Decor was cute. Overall not a bad visit, just a few small details that would make them even better. I will be back and might just get extra chicken :)

Happy to finally play pickleball with Joe and grab a quick lunch together after some friendly, but competitive games. Secret Sauce is located inside the plaza with Sprouts supermarket. Restaurant is small, clean, and strictly fast food vibe. Service is friendly. Secret Sauce is a small eatery at upland specializes in Asian style pork katsu, bento style. I order build your own set with chicken katsu that comes with a small cup of miso soup, fruits, and salad. Good variety for bento. The new sample is spicy chicken katsu. Overall, my chicken katsu is a bit dry, that's why I take out one point. Size of dish is good. As for dipping sauces, I feel there are rooms to improve.

Just tried Secret Sauce and I'm OBSESSED My go-to order is the Chicken Katsu plate -- it comes with veggies , a house salad , fruit , AND their pear sauce + a side of miso soup The chicken katsu is always perfectly crispy like actually 10/10 crunch every time And the pear sauce?? It lowkey reminds me of yellow Thai curry and it's SO GOOD They also give sauce samples which I love -- today I tried basil , sweet chili , and spirulina Everything is cooked fresh to order ‍ so I definitely recommend ordering online and picking up if you don't want to wait If you're in the area... you NEED to try this spot

Pork katsu with veggies, rice and salad. I added the Japanese curry to my rice and it was amazing.

The service upon arriving was friendly and personable. The food was the icing on the cake. I ordered the pork katsu with crazy spicy sauce and Japanese curry and they allowed me to sample the sweet chili and they all were amazing. Great restaurant if you want a full meal at a great price. The ambiance is quaint with some good music playing. I'll definitely be back here.

5/29/26 Secret Sauce Upland, CA...My daughter and I came here for the first time. We really enjoyed it. We both got the Katzu Chicken plate. I had the salad and fruit as the two sides and the peanut sauce was excellent. We also tried other sauces. They were all great! Service here was excellent! Restaurant was very clean too! Secret Sauce is a fitting name! Highly recommend!

Walking in to some nice pop tunes, warm and bright. The lady who took my order was so nice and appreciative... She greeted me with a smile and gave me the run down of the menu. I ordered the Pork Katsu plate with Rice, Veggies and a macaroni salad on the side. She he plate comes with a miso soup that's complimentary. The sauce I had to go with is called "Crazy Spicy" and though it was crazy, it was tasty. Pork Katsu 8.9 / 10 fried to perfection, juicy and went well with the sauce. Miso Soup 8.5 / 10 standard but a bit on the saltier side which I liked. Mac Salad 5 / 10 now it's not that it wasn't good at all, I just don't do apples and raisins in my Mac salad, not a sweet guy. Veggies, Rice, Salad 7 / 10 standard items, good dressing All in all, I had a great experience, and a place I will be beach for something nice, quick and had the staple items. Meat, Carbs, Greens

The food here was good, the portion sizes were generous, and the pricing was good. Lots of options to build what you like.

I was in the area for an appointment and decided to stop by for a late lunch. I saw good reviews, so I went ahead and gave it a try. It turns out their katsu is really good, and they also give free miso soup. I would definitely come back here again with my family. The lady who served me was also really nice. My son would love their katsu, macaroni, and miso!

4.5 stars. This is a small hole in the wall place with pretty good katsu. I got the katsu rice bowl with Japanese curry and my bf got the build your own with katsu, rice, Mac salad, and house salad with Japanese curry. Both came with miso soup that had good flavor. The katsu rice bowl is a fantastic deal. It's so hard to find a decent meal under $15 nowadays. The rice bowl had plenty of rice and TWO pieces of cutlet. The japanese curry was tasty and you can see all the pieces of onion. The service was solid, the woman was very kind and we were asked how things tasted even though it was a quick order-at-the-front-and-go type of place. Glad we dined in as we got to try a few of the different sauces that are offered. When we come back, I'm getting the basil sauce for sure.

Good value for the price! My husband and I shared one meal. Not necessarily something we will come back to again and again, but definitely a nice quick, healthier, cheaper option than normal eating out.

Wow wow wow is all I can say. Where do I even begin.. I ordered the plate with the katsu chicken, udon noodles, house salad, Mac salad & the Japanese curry for sauce. Hubby ordered the plate with tofu, udon noodles, house salad, Mac salad & the tonkatsu for sauce My son had the katsu with udon noodles bowl & the teriyaki for sauce Me and hubby got the donuts with dip to share The food was AMAZING! I love that me, my son and my vegan hubby all have something to enjoy here the donuts were soooooo good too!! You can tell they're made fresh & the dip goes so well with them. All the food was a hit here! The vibes, energy & layout of the restaurant is so nice & well decorated All that said, the highlight of my review definitely goes to the family that was working. I didn't get a chance to get their names but they were so so nice, helpful and even gave us a complimentary green tea as well as different sauces on the side to try out (all were delicious! ). Their daughter was there and was the sweetest. Our son was getting fussy and she tried to make him smile/laugh. I believe they own the establishment which makes their sincerity & amazing customer service that much more appreciated especially as they were working on a holiday We had an amazing first time experience here and will definitely be returning Thank you guys so much!

Great place I discovered in upland next to sprouts! This isn't the biggest place, but there are some seats inside if you do want to dine in. What I like about it is that they make it simple, you order a base, a protein, you order a sauce and it is $15 just like that. The katsu was crispy and the beef was tender. The macaroni was made different, and wasn't just packed with mayo, so it was quite good. If you are looking for katsu in this area this place should fit the bill. Until next time.

I was finally able to check out this place for lunch. The lady who took my order was very friendly. It's a small and clean place with a few tables, if you decide to eat there. I opted for the "Build your own plate" and chose rice, chicken katsu and house salad. It also came with miso soup. The portion is large, plenty of chicken, crunchy breading, fresh salad. Price was $15, which is okay given the good portion size. Would definitely go back.

Of the locations I've been to, this one is by far the least aesthetically pleasing. The other locations, especially the one on Sawtelle, are beautiful and have a nice theme to them. The interior of this one is very strange, it is just a bunch of tables (which are too close to each other) and a mural on one of the walls. The other locations have more wood features/finishes, softer lighting (compared to the harsher lighting here) , and just overall nicer. But ambiance aside, this location is pretty much the same consistent high-quality that I've experienced at other Marugame Udon locations. I think pretty much everything on the menu sounds good, so whatever looks good to you, you should try. I personally love the curry udon. The tempura is great, and I enjoy the pumpkin one the best; however, the last time I went, they didn't allow you to pick the tempura in the cafeteria style line, which is a big part of the experience! We had to order the tempura at the register. They made it to order, which meant it was fresh, but by the time the tempura comes out, I was pretty much already done with the udon, so I can't enjoy the food together. Not sure if that was a one time thing, but if it is a permanent thing, that takes away from the fun and unique cafeteria style experience and makes this just like any other restaurant. But overall, this location is just good. There are a lot of other good restaurants in the Rolling Ridge plaza, but I would go here if I'm in the mood.

Sizzling plates used to be THE big thing in the early and mid 2000s with lots of boba places having them as as specialty (RIP Coffee Break and MJ's Tea House), but now aside from a handful of businesses and Pepper Lunch, they're much more rare. Glad that the IE has Sizzlin' Place as one of their sizzling plate heavy hitters. Aside from the sizzling plates, they have other menu items including fried appetizers, soup and dried noodles, and sides like fries and takoyaki, but if you're going to a sizzling plate place, you gotta get a sizzling plate, you know? That's decorum. Service is welcoming and friendly, and efficient in the safest way possible with the scorching hot plates. Seating can get limited due to the nature of the meal, but I've never had an issues the times I chose to eat here. Ambiance can be relaxed and chill when the Haven City Market isn't busy, but during weekends or rush hour, it can get a bit hectic and there may be a bit of a wait. A staple that you can never go wrong with is the hot plate beef and if you're a carnivore or if you're sharing, you have to upsize and upgrade it. The slices of beef here are just slightly thicker than what I'm used to at Pepper Lunch, but that just means it'll shrink less and get less stuck on the hot plate as well. You get a hearty serving of rice with some corn on top, pepper, and green onions. Like other sizzling plate places, you can always get pasta or udon instead of rice, if you're feeling a bit more adventurous. Super hot, filling meal that's easy to eat. Not the most flavorful sometimes, at least with what I order, and in comparison to other competitors, but hits the spot when need be.

Although the waiters refilled our water glasses very punctually, we won't be coming back here.
