So disappointed in this place. It was my first time trying it and I told the guy before ordering that. He recommended the pad Thai which my husband got and was inedible and the chili pasta which I asked if it was spicy and he said on a scale of 1-5 it was a 2 so I figured a step up from mild - nope! I took longggg inhales to cool my mouth down! Also they took 45 minutes to make this and it took up all the time we had so we had to eat in the car since it's take out only. I also got the dumplings which are just potstickers with soy sauce and the sweet taro rice which was so gross. Would never come back here. It's a tiny hole in the wall Place - take out only, not much room for many employees. there was one high school kid upfront, taking orders and what seemed like only one person in the back kitchen cooking. We ordered pad Thai with chicken, pad Thai with beef and two Thai iced teas. It was good. I found it to be a little bit spendy ($40) and I was a little surprised at how long it took for the food to be ready (45 minutes) But I don't think they have a lot of competition when it comes to other Thai restaurants in the area. Pretty tasty, could use a bit more Thai curry flavor and more protein. It comes with a small box of rice, could have been packed tighter. One more thing is they had more bamboo than protein. Sandpoint for the win! I've only had authentic Thai food a couple of times. I was told it was authentic by friends who spend a lot of time in Thailand and who have very high standards for food. They took me to a hole in wall place in Seattle and showed me what authentic Thai tastes like. This place easily matches up to that one. The red curry is sooooo much better than the Americanized version. If you enjoy great Thai food, this place will ruin you for every other place. **important side notes, due to space limitations and staffing, they're currently take out only. And call ahead. We tried the fried tofu, fried spring rolls, and peanut curry. Fried tofu w/ dipping sauce as well as the peanut curry were excellent. The Fried spring rolls were ok. Was great to grab this and head home to eat it since it is takeout only. read more

The spice level of the curry was a good kick-they make their own curry paste and can not lower the spice level. Fresh veggies in the dishes and good portions as well. about average price point. Always a pleasure. I typically only get take out here as there isn't much dinning space. That being said, I don't mind one bit. The wait time is reasonable and the ordering process is seamless. The service is wonderful and they are always willing to accommodate changes and preferences when possible. Do note however that the curry has certian limitations for those who aren't keen on spice. The resturant does a great job at making the customer aware of this. Curry paste is a complex item, so if a little spice is not for you, maybe try one of their other delightful offerings!?The food is well balanced, and flavorful. I love spicy food and no matter how spicy I order it, they adjust the other flavors to achieve a wonderful balance. The ingredients taste fresh and vibrant. read more

Tiny little modest place entered from a back alleyway in downtown. Only four tables but server quickly put two tables together for our party of seven. Owner is from Thailand, and the food is authentic. We started off with strong Thai tea - cool and good. Then we shared spring rolls and summer rolls. The spring rolls were smaller than expected and not much flavor without the dipping sauce. Entrees were excellent. We had Pad Thai, Green Curry, Panang Curry, Drunken Noodles, pork Pad Ka Prow, BBQ pork stir fry with chili paste. Plenty of sharing around the table, and we all enjoyed everything. Ordered and paid for green curry and peanut curry to go. When we returned, we were told we had only ordered and paid for green curry. After some discussion and I pulled up my credit card app and showed that I had paid and tipped for 2 meals. Now we had to wait for the peanut curry which was delicious. The green curry had only chicken, bamboo shoots and green sauce which was okay, but needed a few more ingredients to make it interesting. It had been 10 years since I went there last, and it will probably be another 10 years before I go again. Three of us went tonight and got a mix of vegetarian and meat dishes. The portions were good sized, the service was great, and the food was absolutely worth the wait (which wasn't even that long given that the dishes were all freshly made). If I could give zero stars I would. We ordered dinner and he said it be ready in 45 minutes. Got there over 15 minutes later and the young lady said they hadn't even started making our order yet. She said do you still want it. I told her that was what we were planning for our family dinner. She said it would be at least another 30 minutes. They didn't even offer to compass appetizers or the meal. Not to mention when we made our order they said they didn't have spring rolls, OK no big deal, but they also didn't have fried rice. The Secret Thai Cafe is so secret that you need a treasure map to find it. I highly recommend to the owners that additional signage be used to increase the likelihood of patrons locating them. We went one night as a small group, excited to indulge in some authentic Thai food. Unfortunately it was quite dark and the lack of any signage had us throwing our arms up in defeat and choosing an alternative dining experience that evening. The next day two of us went back during the listed daytime hours, and FINALLY found it!!! However, despite the listed business hours, the restaurant was closed. Once again we chose an alternative dining experience. This was hard to review in that we never actually ate there. But with the disappointment experienced on two attempts to dine here, I having chosen to give two stars. I feel that additional signage / lighting, and updated business hours just negatively impacted my impression too much. read more

What a wonderful restaurant! My wife and I moved to Sandpoint from a major metropolitan area a few months ago. Before we decided to move here, however, we did a deep dive into the restaurant scene to see how the food was. For such a small community, this town has an amazing number of outstanding restaurants. Out of all the many places we visited, Secret Thai Cafe was the standout. The food is as good as any Thai I've had anywhere. The staff are really lovely people. And, we find the cozy atmosphere in the seated part of the restaurant to be charming. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the Secret Thai Cafe weighed in on our decision to move here. My wife and I went here last night because we heard it was great. I guess my expectations were higher than others. The food was great, what we got anyway, but the service was absolutely the worst. I wanted to give the kid a chance, they had a 15yo kid doing everything up front all by himself who obviously had zero experience with any customer service. We got drinks rather quickly then appetizers longer than expected, but the food made up for the wait. The problem was the entre, we waited for one and a half hours to get the damn food, we saw at least 10 pick up orders go out and a couple came in after us, got their food and were almost done and we still hadn't got our food. I was almost willing to wait longer but wife and I just couldn't do it, I dont want to fault the kid, he was just a kid who shouldn't have been there alone. Whoever was in the back not helping him should have been taking care of the people who were sitting out front not blowing them off for pickup orders. I used to go here more in the past until quality seemed to vary between just so-so and great, I didn't want surprises as I can't afford to go out much, needed more consistency. So, I stopped going for two years. Been three times in last six weeks, food has stabilized at "pretty good", however the service is poor or even non existent...they're "nice", just aren't doing the job. If it's cold outside, it's likely to be colder inside, refuse to turn on heat. Brrr...take out for home. Décor has always been a bit industrial quirky, no issues, just simple.
