Saw their big ad in the newspaper. Called to see if they would quote me a price for sterling silver. As expected I was told no, but "we give the best prices." The ad even stated they pay "top dollar" for sterling flatware sets. When I get to the site three guys are sitting at laptops. I got straight to the point, what are you paying per gram of silver. $00.50!! The price that day was over $2. OK What about the "top dollar" for sterling flatware sets? Nope we just melt everything. The worst experience I've ever had with a gold buyer. The employee offered me around 60% of spot price for my gold. When I refused, he immediately got irritated and asked what I was hoping to get. I gave my counter offer, he got defensive, then told me my estimate was wayy off. After that, he magically decided to offer a price closer to what I wanted. So, Lani (the hubs) has been all into this scrapping thing lately. I got him a metal detector for Christmas and now he spends most of his time on the beach looking for lost pirate treasure, or tourist treasure, as the case may be. Anyways, about a month ago he found an 18k Omega watch with the band all broken and snaggly on the beach. The face was otherwise in GREAT condition, and the watch works! I thought that he should probably take it to a jewelry store or a watch dealer, but he didnt listen to me and his first stop was secured gold buyers because he saw in the midweek and Tiny Tadani says they're the best blah blah blah. Well, Tiny Tadani lied. He took it into them and the girl that helped him tested it about ten times, not sure if it was gold or not. (It didnt really seem like she knew what she was doing). Then, without even asking, she took out a tool and SCRATCHED IT ALL UP!! After damaging the item and taking a good twenty minutes of our time she said she couldn't prove it was gold so she refused it. I cant believe they are so arrogant that they DESTROY people's perfectly good jewelry like that! I eventually talked him into taking it to the jewelry store in town that buys sells high end watches. They said it WAS 18k, and they would have bought it if it weren't so damaged, but because of the damage secured gold buyer did to it, they refused. My mom kept hearing about how great the trade in value for gold currently is and got a bee in her bonnet that she needed to get rid of all her unwanted gold as soon as possible. We stopped by another place that bought gold but got the feeling it was a little shady so we took the estimate and moved on to get a second opinion. Secured Gold Buyers is located in Ward Warehouse on the first floor right next to Loco Boutique. This location is very sparse and literally looks like they brought three wooden desks into the store and opened shop. There were two associates working at the time and they both looked very friendly and knowledgeable. Although we had to wait a little before we were helped, the wait wasn't long. Once we were seated, the guy helping us asked if this was our first time selling gold. It was and he was nice enough to explain every step he took in appraising the gold. First they run a magnet over it to see if it reacts (gold doesn't react). Then they inspect each item and categorize it by the amount of carats it has and scratch some of it off on this paper and drip liquid on it to make absolutely sure it doesn't react. After doing the math, he gave us an estimate and then added 20% as part of a special they were running that weekend. We ended up selling the gold there but keep in mind that SGB gave us about $30 less (the total was over 1k so it wasn't a huge deal) that the "shadier" place, with the 20% special. I think they might give a lower rate on gold so they can surprise you with the special "addition" later on. Went in to sell some American Eagles "$50" Gold Coins. These gold coins contain 1 ounce of gold in them. They offered to buy our coin for 88% of the NY Gold Spot price (they claim 90% to your face but taking their buy price and doing the math, it is 88%.) And that 2% is $39 on this day!! So I've changed their rating from 2 stars to 1 star for their lying ways. We eventually sold our gold coins at Hawaiian Island Stamp and Coin on Bishop Street for 98.25% of the London Gold Spot price. This may not seem all that big a deal to you, but on March 10, 2012, this is a difference of $180 that Hawaiian Island paid more than Secured Gold Buyers. Went in there to find out how much they would pay for gold and they wouldn't say until they examined what I had to sell. I showed them a 14k gold ring and they offered $13 per gram for it. At approx. 31.10 grams per Troy ounce. Their offer came out to be about $400 an ounce. I think their offer was poor considering that pure gold 24k is now over $1800 per ounce. Would not recommend this place. Also they should post buy rates up front. Some places post buy rates per gram for 14k, 18k, and 24k. They should do the same. read more

Went in there to sell some gold. They need a "take a number" or sign-in system and more employees. It was a very slow process and you have to ask who came just before you so that you won't miss your turn or no one will skip-up and take your turn. Prices were fair; nothing out of the ordinary. One more thing...Tiny Tadani's commercial has got to stop. That "number one" thing gets on my nerves. I almost didn't go there just because of the stupid commercial; my girlfriend wanted to go there since we found (by shear luck) a parking space just outside. I must admit though, the gal who helped us was very informative as my friend asked a million questions and she tried to answer as best she could, telling us if she didn't have the answer instead of giving us "I guess" answers. read more

The woman who helped me seemed nice at first but she took only about 2 minutes to weigh and test my gold. The testing consisted of an acid test which includes extracting gold particles from your jewelry. Basically it was scratched amongst a surface and then acid was dropped onto the particles to determine if it was real. This gold testing ultimately scratched my gold cross (one of the edges were noticably dulled down). What if I had wanted to sell my gold cross to a place that resells jewelry? Obviously that would ruin the value of it. This upset me, of course. Then, she offers me $150 for my (now damaged) cross, Hawaiian pendant, and thick gold chain. This upset me further considering that the Wedding Ring Shop offered me $230 for all my jewelry that same day. Thus, I give them ONE reluctant star. read more
