Meh, this storage space place is OK, depending on what you need. Looked into getting my own storage space since I've got Yelpstick coming out of my ears and driving up to Yelp HQ in SF to pick up other "schwag" and/or drop it off is kind of a pain. And I *hate* having bags of random stuff hanging out in my trunk. So I did some research on Yelp and found Security Public Storage. They have mostly 4 and 5-star reviews, so off I went! Yes, this location is in a pretty safe 'hood and yes, it's very clean. The folks who helped me in the lobby were also very nice and professional. They showed me a couple of spaces and I was about to sign up for a space until... 1) They won't sign for your packages, unless is an agreed upon vendor. Apparently there's problems in California with drug dealers in storage spaces. Not my m.o., I just need somewhere to store my koosies and stickers! 2) If they do agree to sign for the package, they won't take it up to your space; rather you have to come pick it up within 24 hours. Not always the most convenient thing for a team of one (well, one and a half if you count my awesome intern). Sooo, if you need a storage space for extra furniture or boxes of "stuff" that you don't need to look at for months at a time, this is not a bad storage space. However, if you need to have "stuff" coming and going, this is NOT the place for you! read more

If they would not keep raising the rent on me... then maybe I would not be so annoyed.. But its starting to feel that every couple of months I get another notification that I have to pay more. The trick is to get you in thru a promotion.. but once you are in, you are also stuck.. by now, a 10x10 unit on the first floor costs me 263 a month!! Nothing in a contract protects you that they can't just keep adjusting their rates.. As a customer, you rent the truck and spend extra money to put your stuff there, so you are all in and committed once your stuff is all locked up. - Personally, I am fed now.. One to many rent "adjustments" Aside from being unhappy about the cost.. There is the part that if you store anything thats truly valuable and or important to you, you might want to re think this place. Originally, I selected a unit on the 1st floor inside building unit (not facing outside wall) to have a more temperature controlled environment. (There is also a basement in this building) But when I picked up a few documents the other day, I noticed that they all had a moisture feel and I quickly took all the boxes that contained books, photo albums, negatives and other important documents back home. Sadly my good books stored there ended up damaged.. smelling and had yellowed pages :( I am getting ready to re evaluate and clear the unit. Holding on to things because I don't have time to sell them, is costing me more than what its worth. I am better off donating and giving everything away. Especially now that I am storing all my important documents back at home. (My garage is dryer than this place) With my newest rent increase... A year, now costs me $3156!! Wow, even as I write this, I realize that I need to clear this place asap :) I guess this latest letter I just received in the mail and taking the time to write the review was good for something. This was our first time renting out a storage unit. We had advice from our friends on picking a place with great security, etc because of break ins from other storage companies. We obviously didn't want to be victims of this. When we first walked in the staff was VERY helpful, and informed of everything about the storage, safety, procedures, set-up, etc. There is a gate where you need a code that allows you to "unlock" your unit so that it won't alarm. You will also need your own lock for the storage door. Once you leave, you punch in your code, which sets off the alarm. So if someone tries to open or break in your unit without your unlock code, it will alarm! I thought that this was VERY brilliant! We were offered 2 months of free storage because of the size of the unit we rented and this was a plus!!! Each time this we stop by to pick up or drop off our items, we always had friendly staff! I highly recommed this storage place! I haven't received any negatives... yet, but I'm glad we picked this storage! read more

UPDATE Matt, I benefit from the 6-month promotion the same way everyone else who wants to rent a storage unit today. SPS's offers and discounts are actually publicly available online, and to be fair, most competitors offer similar promotions as part of their business model. This review is based on a real dissatisfaction I'm currently experiencing. I'm a returning customer as you pointed out. This is the second time I choose this location to store my belongings. In fact, because of my first experience here back in 2013 was so great is that I decided to bring my business back to this place. Did you knew that I have to travel over 100 miles every time I want to access my storage unit? And not precisely because of a lack of rental options where I live. Talk about loyalty huh? I was aware that once the promotion expired the price of my rental would increase to the non-discounted rate. The problem I have is that none of you guys ever told me that my rent would be increased 3 times during a 12 months period following the expiration. See below the sequence of rate increases I have received in chronological order. - Promotion expired on April 2015 ($125.75) - 1st Price Increase on May 2015 ($165.00) - 2nd Price Increase on Dec 2015 ($181.00) - 3rd Price Increase on May 2016 ($190.00) Before you or anybody jump into conclusions, keep in mind that standard rates for a given unit type change overtime. When I rented my unit the standard rate was $165 which is different from the rates advertised today at ~$200. I think it's a bad strategy to drastically increase rates to old tenants over a 12 months period in order to match current standard rates. Like I said before, having a yearly schedule for increases works better for everyone, the business and the customers. END OF UPDATE ------ The honey moon period is over. The frequent price increases are starting to have a negative effect on my experience in this location. I have a small 5x10 unit in the basement level, and once again today I received a Price Adjustment Letter from SPS. Long story short, my monthly rent has been raised exactly three times in less than a year by $25 (which translates to an extra $300 per year), and something is telling me that this is not going to be the last time my rate increases. And for the record, before all these rate increases my rent went up by $40 after the promotion expired. So in summary, I'm paying $65 per month on top of the initial price when I first rented my unit. That's a 50% increase folks! Totally unacceptable. I understand price increases are a necessary part of the self storage business model, but I think they work better if you make it part of the yearly schedule instead of increasing rent to tenants every 3-4 months. And sadly, this one of the main reasons of potential loss of tenants. I'm a living example of it. read more

This is one of the few cleanest storage facilities I've been to. Yelpers, I suggest to take advantage; visit their site and print out their coupon! I was helping my BF comparing rates with other storages, but nothing beat this place. REMINDER: When you have already rented a storage unit, upon driving in through the green gate... make sure to punch in your code first then enter driving into the gate. Because they'll charge you a $25 fee if you don't and let you know by announcing it through the telecom while your opening up your unit! You can really tell this place is pretty SECURED!!! read more

As good as it gets! This place is clean, very secure, and the people who work here are all so nice and helpful. It's also way less expensive than storage in SF. You can access your unit early in the morning until 9pm, and I have never seen more than one other car parked in front. They have huge elevators and carts to help you wheel your stuff around. I chose this location because of the community it is surrounded by - out of the more traveled path and nice apartment complexes nearby. It is my first time renting storage space, so of course I had lots of questions initially. Chris Hulshof helped me and I can't begin to explain how assured I was that my stuff was in a secure place. He gave me a tour of the different sized units, gave me the low down on how the security works, and answered all my questions. He also let me know that within the first month of renting you are entitled to a free use of their moving truck as long as less than 20 miles. Can't tell you what a relief that was not having to figure out UHaul logistics. Definitely ask for Chris if you have the chance to go in on Sunday or Monday. He is very knowledgeable and makes renting a storage unit as seamless as possible when most times moving is a nightmare. Man. You should have seen my office. I have been purchasing gear for a business that I'm starting and stacking it in my tiny office up to the ceiling. Now things are fairly civilized here. They have some good deals. They seem nice. Watch out when they have an auction. A bunch of weird customers will show up cause they haven't paid their bills. They know that their stuff is gonna be sold. Seems sketchy, but hey, no one is living in these units. There is no dog shit on the floor, which is a plus. They also have alarms on their units. They are also cheap. I really hope I get some business soon though, but at least I don't have to look at this gear everyday and have a normal apartment. read more

The prices are so good and a lot less to store your things, than in San Francisco. If you want a well maintained and managed facuilty, this is your place. This place is clean and well maintained and the premises well monitored. My beef is with the idiotic way they take payments and have been a complete pain in the butt and waste of my time. Apparently you can now make payments online with a new credit card - in the past if you wanted to use a new card you had to fax them some form or show up in person (seriously, a fax? is this 1987?). Since i have a new credit/debit card my payment is late, as i don't want to deal with going to office depot to use a flipping fax machine. The point is, my payment is late, due to the weird and inconvenient "new credit card policy". So my unit goes into "pre-lien". Security Public Storage sends me a PDF legal document that EXPLICITLY STATES that I can now only pay my bill in cash or money order. I find a day when I can take time out of my schedule to go down to this place and take care of this. The woman at the counter says "oh no, you can pay with a credit card, you are in pre-lien, not lien". I tell her what the document says. She looks it up. "oh my goodness, it does say you have to pay in cash, most people don't read this - I'm going to go ahead and tell my manager about this". Ok great, so I didn't need to drive 90 min round trip to give you cash. BUT NOW YOU WON'T EXCEPT THE PAYMENT YOU TOLD ME I HAD TO PAY YOU IN CASH??? As I had to find a day I could take off work for this, some time passed - so now my next month rent is due and she "can't except anything less than the full amount" me: "Can I give you the 200 in cash you told me I had to give you in cash?" her" "I can't except anything less than the full amount, it's corporate policy" me: "even though this lateness is all caused by the factually incorrect letter you sent me???" unbelievably, absurdly frustrating..... read more

I really lucked out with Southpoint because it was the first storage place I ever rented a unit from. I had no way of knowing that self-storages could be so scary until Southpoint decided to raise their prices and I took a look around at the competition. Aye yae yae!!! The other similarly priced places were a wreck - outdoors, smelling like must, in bad areas of town, run by tweakers, and dirty, dirty, dirty. But this is a review of Southpoint so let me tell you why they earned my five stars. First off, it is owned by the cutest couple that live upstairs from the office. Not only do they decorate the office full out for even the smallest holidays, but from time to time they throw a party for their renters. The place feels like home and I feel like family. A couple of times over the years I forgot to pay my storage and instead of putting my junk up for auction, they just waited until I figured it out on my own and came running into the office full of apologies. The facilities themselves are SUPER clean and secure. The place is indoors and really well lit, even in the darkest corners. You have to punch a code to get in and out of the main gate and that code disarms your individual storage unit's alarm. And they have cameras everywhere so I think it would be quite a challenge if you were a crook. They always have dollies available for you to borrow and they let you use their moving truck when you first rent your unit. It makes moving a lot easier and the music that they have playing throughout the property makes moving more enjoyable. The address says Daly City, but really they are located on the hill behind Cow Palace, so it isn't such the trek out of the way as the address indicates. They used to be super cheap when they first opened, but now they are competitively priced. For what you get for your money, they are still a huge deal. read more

Recently moved out, and it was a very painless process with their office. However, I had to lower this to 4 stars because that free moving truck is almost false advertising. They never mentioned in the beginning or put a disclaimer on the website that it's only free for the first 30 days of your rental. The month we moved out was probably the 3rd or 4th month, and I was almost relying on borrowing that truck to move our things out. read more

I was planning to store my stuff in SF but realized that the city has no facilities capable of accommodating the massive semi that would be moving our stuff across the country. I called these guys and not only were they affordable, but they were incredibly sweet and helpful. The facilities are very convenient (less than a 15 minute drive from downtown SF), affordable, *clean*, and just amazingly pleasant. You get the sense that the couple that manages it wants to help in any way possible. They're above and beyond nice. Moving is a traumatic enough experience. The people that work here are helpful and friendly and that really made the difference for me. Facilities are clean and they really seem to have their act together as far as policies and procedures. I've had several storage units over the years, in several major cities, and thus far, this is the best group I have stored with. You won't be able to beat their prices with comparable services. I particularly like them as the storage is a truly climate controlled, indoor storage and easy access, and the hours of access are longer than most. Past experience has shown that to access most storage units, you could only get to them on weekends or by leaving work mid day because they either didn't open very early, or closed before you got off of work. That's not the case here. The building on Carter Street looks more like an office building than a Storage facility creating less of an eye sore in a residential neighborhood and better security as it attracts less attention. Also the security and up keep of the grounds, building, elevators, and corridors to your unit/s are very well maintained. And, although we did not utilize the service, they have a truck available if needed to move items to the building. Unfortunately, this is a one time offer - first move in - service availability, which seems kind of worthless, as most people will have some form of a truck to bring their items here. And although, other facilities do not even have that, to be a truly valuable service would be to provide this service AFTER move-in for a fee. Friendliest staff, clean facility, great prices. This is the first time I had to use a storage, and they made it easy for me. Here's some highlights: There's a secured gate that disarms your storage and gives you the security while unloading. The place is clean. You don't see anything out of place. They also provide all the tools you need to move, i.e. truck , dollies, locks and boxes at a minimal price. The place is warm!! It's not cold and damp like some other places. Music ... while moving? Sort of lifts the stress from moving - for me at least. Location ... easy in and out. There's plenty of space around the lot, especially for U-hauls. And if you've read the rest of the reviews, then I won't have to explain the free month. THERE'S NO OTHER FACILITY THAT DOES THIS! I've been renting here for over 4 months now and I've had no complaints. The facilities are pretty clean. Parking is no problem. My storage unit is on the second floor, but I always get parking right in front of the elevator. Plenty of carts to use to haul/carry your stuff. The staff is super friendly and helpful. When i first went there to check out the place. They went through everything with me and answered all my questions. I didn't feel pressured at all. Also, if you need a moving van. The Staff is really nice. Although there seems to be a discrepancy on who is the manager (everyone says they are when you call), they did honor the discount promised to us by a new "manager". The location is SUPER clean, and very safe. The owners, a cute married couple, are great with answering questions and providing great service. The only complaint I would have is the restroom. Its worse than most gas stations I've been too. Its very nice, but extremely dirty. I'm so glad I found this place! This was the first time I was putting things in storage, so I was really nervous about the whole thing. I got a ton of advice from a friend who's used storage facilities all over the country and then went to work researching my options in/around SF. Some highlights: - The owners, Shelly and Jeremiah, are some of the sweetest people you'll meet. I love that they're the ones at the front desk and keeping an eye on the property -- I feel like my stuff is really being looked after by people who care not just some kid who's being paid $10/hr to sit at a front desk. - The facility: high ceilings, HUGE elevator, covered loading dock (perfect for when you have to move stuff in or out in the rain), climate controlled units if you want them, everything's indoors, units are individually alarmed, the whole deal. The hallways can be just a bit narrow, but that's probably true at most storage facilities, and it didn't seem to hinder my move-in process at all - Free moving truck: I borrowed this for my move-in day which saved me all the hassle (and expense) of dealing with U-haul. You can only use it for free on the day your contract actually starts, so just be mindful of that, but from all the research I did, that's true pretty much any place that offers a truck as a feature. - Location: I like that this place is a bit out of the way. Made it much easier for parking, plus I just feel like my stuff is a bit safer than it would be right in the middle of the city. read more

There were monitors that showed the hallways in real time so tenants and building managers can see that the storage facility is being watched 24/7. The storage I had moved into was clean and well maintained. I thought the hallways were somewhat narrow, but actually it was easy to maneuver around. This is a well maintained storage facility. They have climate controlled units available and a very knowledgeable and personable husband and wife team. We got a 10x10 climate controlled unit at their promo price for 5 months. It's worth every penny, in our opinion. We had checked out another storage place, who offered the first month free, but it was a run down place with dampness and mold issues. Security Storage has made the process of last-minute moving so much easier. After researching over 10 different facilities, we agreed on Security because of their pricing and location. Their prices were significantly lower than other places, and they also pro-rated our first month and last month. The front desk is always very helpful and have even gone out of their way to find screw drivers in the back of the office when we needed to take some things apart. Overall, an experience that could have been a complete nightmare (moving a 3BD, 2BA house into 2 storage units within 12 hours) turned out to be better thanks to these guys. read more

3 rate increases in a year? That's insane. Closed for holidays and that means no access. Fine close the office but people who have the day off can't access their stuff. They don't send out emails and they don't inform you on their website that they will be closed on Memorial Day. I looked on their website and there was no hint they would be closed so I planned on access but no. A sign taped on a post doesn't cut it once I've already made the trip. There's nothing special about the place or the management. They're the same greedy type taking over the bay. Their expenses stay the same but the rates keep going up and I mean every few months.
