This place has fantastic slushies and custards. But I came in for a late lunch. One fellow diner had a grilled cheese, the other a double cheeseburger. I had the special, which was pork and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and a hot dog (!). They loved their meals; I found mine bland. The service is great and it's probably the northernmost place you can get sweet tea.

However, since I was touring a few Frank Lloyd Wright houses, I had not eaten since my early morning continental breakfast at the Comfort Inn in Connellsville. Mindlessly following the Google Maps directions, I arrived in a town called Indian Head and didn't have any expectations about what I'd find in this family-friendly roadside diner. Without hesitation, I ordered the $13.99 Grilled Chicken Salad. I was quite impressed with what arrived. There were huge pieces of grilled chicken breast, tender and moist, with cucumber, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, onions, beets, shredded cheddar, and a pickled egg with ranch dressing on the side (Photo 9). Sounds basic, I know, but it was hearty, fresh, and genuinely satisfying. Midway through my salad, a plate of fries arrived (Photo 10). I wasn't expecting it, but the server apologized for the delay. I only noticed later that the fries were mentioned in the menu. I certainly didn't mind because they were hot, tasty, and not at all greasy. Even though I was getting full and kinda anxious to get going, I was rather hypnotized by the refrigerator of freshly made pies. I just couldn't help myself and ordered a $4.29 slice of Banana Meringue Pie (Photo 8). I don't think I've had homemade pie that good since gorging at Valois back in my olden grad school days in the South Side of Chicago. What a nice surprise to have such a delicious square meal in a place called Indian Head. FOOD - 5 stars..tasty, reasonably priced diner fare exceeded my expectations AMBIANCE - 4 stars...clean and spacious diner SERVICE - 5 stars...friendly server made a big difference TOTAL - 5 stars...if I'm ever in western Pennsylvania, I'd be back RELATED - Exploring the Pittsburgh area? The outdoor patio is beautiful but quite a few ants, nats, and mosquitoes. Menu is full of great options. Everything tasted wonderful; the mushroom soup is a well known staple around the region. The burrata pita bread was a little soggy, but tasted great. The smash burger had good flavor combinations but was definitely not a smash burger as the patties were full thickness. I would call it more a double bacon cheeseburger and it arrived overcooked, but the peppercorn aioli was a nice touch. The salmon salad had perfectly prepared salmon and I loved the dressing. In the future I think I would omit the tomato and cucumber because there were so many ingredients I feel it took away from the dish. The wedge salad special was great. Very blue cheese forward but I enjoyed it. Would be even better with some smoked bacon on top. The salmon dinner was well prepared, fresh and the presentation was on point. All in all, I would definitely come back and give this place another try. Also, with some fine tuning this cafe will be well above par for this area.

Our waitress Kendall was wonderful, being very helpful in making our decisions of drinks and dinner. Good GF options (my wife) and a good selection of liquors at the bar (including a small but solid selection of bourbons). The food was very tasty, but I found my pot roast a bit lacking in quantity. My wife's filet was a nice cut and done perfectly, thanks to Kendall's suggestion, and my m-i-l had the crab cakes and found them delicious. The ambience is relaxing and nice, but I do suggest they get better seats - hard wood is not the most comfortable selection at such a nice restaurant. Looking forward to returning, and definitely in the Spring, as the establishment turns open air in addition to the wrap around dining area that faces the river.

When I asked the hotel clerk where she recommended I could get dinner, she pointed to this place. Rebel that I was, I didn't follow her advice and went instead to a middling sushi spot further down the street. On the bitterly cold walk back to the hotel, I decided to stop in. Sitting at the cocktail bar, the place was quite crowded, and unfortunately they were counting down to their trivia night. Even though I was an undefeated Silver Screen Trivial Pursuit champion in my youth, I took a pass on the contest. Instead I had the $11 Espresso Martini, a mix of vodka, coffee liqueur, and cold brew in a can (Photo 6). It was basically what I wanted for a nightcap. As I took my last gulp, the trivia started. If you follow my reviews, you know I'm a fan of old-school diners, the classics, and honest home-cooked food. Summit hits all three marks, serving straightforward and delicious American standards since the 1960s. The three-egg omelet loaded with veggies and sausage was exactly the pre-ski power-up I needed. My son stuck with his go-to breakfast burrito, and my daughter went with the classic two eggs, bacon, and potatoes. Everything was spot on. The staff has just the right level of "WWA"--Waitresses With Attitude. They are perfectly polite, but they hold the line on proper behavior and will quickly put anyone in their place if they step out of line. It keeps the environment grounded and authentic. A few tips for your visit: * Seating: Expect to wait for a table in the lobby or outside during peak hours. * Payment: Bring your wallet--this is a cash-only establishment.
