If it weren't for PG&E, we may have never found Selby this past weekend. My gf and I had an afternoon lunch and tasting appointment elsewhere but decided to arrive early for coffee, saunter around the square and check out some of the shops. The high winds really changed the trajectory of our plans. PG&E turned off the power when we were in the coffee shop. Apparently, it affected everyone. It's not too bad wandering around downtown Healdsburg early Sunday morning actually. We knew we would find someone with some wine out. That's when we rounded the corner from Matheson St. down Center and saw Xzavier smiling on the patio after setting the leaf blower to the side. We lamented the high winds and power turned off by PG&E to him, and he welcomed us exclaiming he had wine he could pour. We gladly entered the beautiful patio surrounded by lush foliage. We both took a seat - partial shade and bright rays of sunshine on my back. He brought out whatever our little hearts desired and was very descriptive about the wines. The varietals here are a bit different than most. They had Carignan, Grenache, Petite Verdot and a couple different Zinfandels in addition to the other familiar types such as Chardonnay, Rose, Savignon Blanc, Cabernet and Pinto Noir. I was impressed with the arsenal of wines here! I am usually a fan of the lighter reds which generally translates to Pinot Noir. However, I loved the Grenache! The Old Vine Zinfandel and Azevedo Cabernet I had to take home also. This Cabernet was different than any other I'd ever tasted though. The grapes grow amongst Eucalyptus trees, and that flavor profile carried over into the wine. The smell and the taste was most unique and lovely. When you think there's not much difference out there, Selby will prove you wrong. This is an exceptional tasting room complete with patio full of flowers and greenery. I will gladly repeat this experience. read more

What a gem in downtown Healdsburg! At first, we almost walked past, one entrance door was locked, and we didn't think to try the other. Luckily, a friendly face popped out, letting us know they were open and we were welcome to come in. The outdoor seating area is gorgeous, and Rafael, the winery manager, made the experience exceptional. He didn't just share knowledge and local tips, he was charming, personable, and felt instantly familiar, like someone we'd known far longer than just a first meeting. He listened to what we like, chose wines that were spot-on, and took the time to connect with us in a way that made the visit feel special. Selby is the kind of spot you don't want to miss. The wines were excellent, the setting was beautiful, and the hospitality, especially from Rafael, made the visit truly memorable. We can't wait to come back on our next trip to Healdsburg. read more

We had a reservation at noon on a Wednesday. When we arrived were seated outside on very comfortable furniture. They are dog friendly, so Pepper joined us in his stroller. There were two tastings to choose from, I'm sorry I don't remember what they are. I usually refer to my receipt or the website and neither in this case have the tastings listed. We tried everything they were tasting and left with one bottle each of Sauvignon Blanc RRV 2021, Zinfandel Old Vines 2018, Montepulciano 2018, and Pinot Noir Calegari 2019. The young woman who was our host was very enthusiastic, nice and attentive. I can't remember her name. The receipt lists her as EMM. Selby's has this zin called Bobcat and it's my MIL's favorite. She has good taste because it's delicious! (P.S. we're fans of berry, juicy, fruit-forward zins, so if that's not your type of zin ... stop reading.) I really enjoyed my time here. The walls are adorned with letters from the White House. Mrs. Obama is even a fan! We were the only ones in the tasting room at the time and the girls pouring were really nice. We got to taste everything they had. Even the sparkling was nice! This is a small but elegant wine tasting room tucked away about a block or so from the main square of Healdsberg. It was a little tough to find at first, but we were so glad to discover this place. This rare gem still offers complimentary wine tasting, which is not that common anymore in the Sonoma wine valley. I loved their sweet wine. The staff was friendly and approachable. They let me try several wines, even the port. We took a picture with their green guy statue. I loved the delicate glass chandeliers and looking at all the white house menus that they contributed to. I have made many trip into Selby and every single one has been an overall amazing experience! The Wine: I've always been more of a red wine drinker but Selby has completely changed that. It's no wonder why they have been featured in the White House! All their wines are VERY reasonably priced! The Staff: The staff at Selby is the best! Selby Winery Tasting Room is another great tasting room in downtown Healdsburg. I had just left one tasting room and still being sober, decided to stop at Selby next door and was glad I did. The tasting room itself is small and well organized with enough space at the bar for 2-3 small groups. What struck me was the friendliness of the staff and of Susie Selby (the winemaker) herself, who was in the tasting room taking care of some business. Next to my group was a group that had been to the tasting room the day before and decided to come back to get more wine and chat with Susie. The conversation was very comfortable and free flowing and Susie was wonderful. My group even joined in with some quips and comments. This was a very cool experience and a great sign of the care that goes into the customers, the wine experience and the wine itself. After such a positive initial experience, it was on to the wines, and they did no disappoint. All the wines I tried were delicious but two that stood out were the 2009 Grenache and a 2008 Pinot Noir under the label Clean Coast. I bought one of each and was told that part of the proceeds from my purchase of the Clean Coast Pinot was going to a water conservation group. Not only did I get a great personal experience and great wine, but did my part to help the environment while proceeding to get my wine buzz on. Overall very awesome experience! read more

I could have purchased a Pinot, a Malbec, or a Syrah, but I opted for something different since my hands were already full. ****If you like a good summer dessert wine, the FANCY NANCY is a great bet. Everything about this place was so amazing; from a perfect variety of tastings to the complimentary pulled pork sandwiches-- we never wanted to leave! Tyler is the best thing about Selby! The Selby tasting room is one of the best in Healdsburg. My fiancé and I come here every couple of months and Selby is always a must! We have been club members for a few years. For myself, a good tasting room consists of amazing red wines and amazing employees. The bobcat Zinfandel, Grenache, Pinot noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon are my absolute favorites here! They offer a wide range of whites, rosés, reds, and even dessert wines so your options are unlimited. You will definitely find something you like. Last but not least, Tyler makes this tasting room lively and fun. He is very warm and welcoming. Besides drinking amazing wine, we come back specifically to see Tyler. (Yes, we know his days off!) I love wine. However, due to my elementary school teacher salary, wine-tasting room visits are few and far in between. So when I say I love the Selby room, you could take it with a grain of salt. HOWEVER, out of the FOUR, yes FOUR tasting rooms I've been to, Selby blows the rest out of the water. We went on a Tuesday afternoon during the summer. There was one other couple there and the woman serving the wine was friendly, open, unpretentious, and engaging. The wine speaks for itself. It is absolutely delicious and I basically got so drunk that we had to walk around the plaza a few times, get a cup of coffee, and eat some snacks. I highly recommend the cab, any of their sweet zins, the dolcetto, and the sauv blanc. They obviously have the street cred - they send their wines to the white house all the time! Lastly, I like that their tasting room is off the main plaza, almost like it's a hidden gem. It's a great place for those of us who don't get to wine-taste that often but love wine, and want to spend the little money that they have at the best places! read more

This tasting room is about a block from the square, past Barn Diva, we were recommended by Nate at Williamson Wines. The tasting fee is only $5 for reserve tasting, FREE for the regular tasting. The staff was very nice and they have some great wines. We really enjoyed their Granache, and the Petit Verdot. Not only that, but it was on SALE can you believe that? Only winery we went to all weekend (out of 12 places) that had reasonable prices on reds ($25). We bought a couple and will definitely let people know about this place. Warning, tasting room is pretty small so probably not good for larger groups. read more

I will be honest, I don't choose my wineries by the fullness of their reds or the vintage of their chardonnays, nope I have one criteria and one criteria only. Can I bring my dog? With confidence gained by fellow yelpers that indeed the tasting room was chase friendly we headed up to Healdsburg. It took a minute to find the tasting room though its right off the square. They let the dog in and even provided a dog bowl. The tasting was complimentary and they even began pouring from their reserve list too (which I think is ordinarily five dollars). The rose was my favorite because I didn't even think I liked roses. But it was a syrah rose and I picked up a bottle for a dinner invite because I wanted to bring wine and wasn't sure what they were serving. I thought a rose would be a nice compromise. Now I don't know if it was the best rose in the world or even all of Healdsburg. But it was so palatable that I was sure that everyone who tried it at the dinner party would find it pleasant. And I was right! The place had a steady flow of half drunk wine tasters as it was getting to be about 4:30, but it was never crowded and we were never rushed. The lady pouring our wine had so much information about the wines and wine in general that I learned many new facts that I was able to use at said dinner party and truly impress. I love that! You should go to Selbys. Lets support the small local vineyards pretty please? Go, dog or not. And if you need a dog let me know, I am sure chase will go again. read more

17 years ago I was on a trip through the University I attended and we stopped off in Healdsburg to do some tasting. A local recommended that we visit the Selby tasting room. Both my college roommate and I really enjoyed the wines; so much so that we both joined the wine club. Being a college student I really didn't have the funds to keep up with a wine club so I gave it up. But I always remembered the wines and often thought about joining again but you know how it is...you get busy, you forget or you decide maybe you shouldn't spend the money and so on and it just doesn't happen. I have always remembered how much I enjoyed their wines so on our recent trip this past weekend (7/5/15) to Healdsburg I really wanted to go back and see if they still poured great wines. As we were finishing up at another tasting room I asked my sister and niece if they would indulge me and go try out Selby Wines. The guy doing the pouring at the tasting room we were at agreed that we shouldn't miss stopping by Selby so he helped me sell them on one more tasting. Fortunately, Selby did not disappoint. My sister, my niece and I thoroughly enjoyed the wines. Although I am not a huge white wine fan I can see why people like the Selby Sauvignon Blanc and Rose. I'm also not a big sparkling wine fan but as fate would have it they opened a bottle of the Carnival Sparkling wine and we were lucky enough to try it. I really enjoyed it and bought a bottle (among several others). I also loved the Bobcat Zinfandel, I enjoyed the Sangiovese, and the Port was yummy. I actually enjoyed all the other wines we tasted as well but the wines I listed were the ones that stood out the most for me. I noticed a couple of reviews where people said the wines are not outstanding. I would have to disagree. For the price point I think they exceed expectations. I love the price point; it's affordable and in a range that will allow me to enjoy the wines often. Sure, I love a $60.00+ bottle of wine from time to time but that's just too much when you are a wino like me. I love my reds and I enjoy having a few glasses a week so I really like to have a wine that I enjoy and can drink throughout the week without feeling guilty for spending so much. I think that Selby Wines are affordable and a good, solid go to wine that you can enjoy on a more continual basis. But I also find that they offer wines that you can bring out at a nice dinner with family and/or friends and it still gives you an impressive wine to share with others. I was genuinely pleased with the wines I tasted the other day. So of course, I joined the wine club again! As for the tasting room, yes it is small but I didn't feel crowded and I loved the two ladies that helped us. They had great personalities, they were friendly, and fun. Plus they let us try some extras. For me, the BEST wine isn't always a high price point, super complex wine (although I enjoy that too), it's about having a nice solid wine that you can thoroughly enjoy often. I also don't need some overly decorated tasting room. A fun atmosphere, nice unpretentious people pouring your wine that you can have an enjoyable conversation with...that is what makes a tasting room in my opinion. My mom and I stopped in for a tasting just as two other young women began theirs, and we had a nice time chatting with each other and the friendly and knowledgeable guy pouring wines. While I wasn't particularly in love with anything I tried during our stop, I will check them out again next time I am in the area.
