My appointment began on time and the entire experience was lovely. Hair wash and scalp massage while sitting in a massage chair was a much appreciated treat. Couldn't agree more with the negative experiences outlined below. I would give negative stars if I could. The owner/manager Peter told me on the phone, and I wish I had recorded it: "his business is a new model and its focus is NOT to provide customer service but community building". The owner/manager sounds like some new agey guy who has never run a business before. Long story short, tried many times to book my groupon but no answer to the phone as other people have outlined below. Outgoing voice mail message says to email them. Takes about two days for them to get back to you via email or otherwise. They told me they were booked up for 5 weeks in advance. Who books a massage 5 weeks in advance? This is not practical. I eventually left a message on their voice mail asking for someone to call me back immediately or I would leave negative feedback. Guess what? Peter was magically able to call me back right way this time. He told me I was is was being aggressive. I find Vancouver people cannot take confrontation very well. No actually I was trying to help you redeem your business and give you the benefit of the doubt. He went on this long tangent about his business was not focused on customer service like other spas but more on community involvement, whatever that means? He also told me that groupon takes so much of his money that he doesn't want to honor them and he makes no money. Why has this business signed up so many times for groupon then? He went on for a good 10 minutes about this. He then went on to say has so many prestige loyal customers and his business is so popular and thriving he does not need groupon or other voucher services or other customers. Then why has he signed up twice now for groupon and now I noticed he is on travel zoo? In the next breathe he told me he cannot afford to pay a receptionist or someone else to answer the phone. Gee I thought your business was thriving with so many loyal prestige custimners. I asked for him to initiate a refund as lets be honest I have no desire at this point to have a massage here nor would he want someone like me to come into his business as I quote unquote" "threatened his business". Like others have mentioned I have suspicions about whether this is a legitimate business or something else is going on? Book here at your risk yelpers. Be prepared to wait 5 to 6 weeks for an appointment or even for someone to call you back lol! Yelp folks the writing is on the wall with this one. Read the owners self centred response below it speaks volumes about him. Narcissistic and delusional perhaps? He doesn't have time to answer the phone or book in clients but can sit on Yelp all day and write response essays to everyone with . Dear Selfish-ology, Your lengthy response is weird and unnecessary. Had you taken the time to really listen to all of your negative reviews, you'd find that your dissatisfied customers simply want to communicate with you, and not feel taken advantage of, or mislead. Outline your booking service practices clearly on the Groupon, and also on your voicemail. Be honest and tell people what they can expect. If it takes one week to hear back, another two weeks to get confirmation of an appointment... in the future - just state that. Give people a lovely sense of how you don't like phones interrupting the experience of people receiving treatments, and all the other elements that have made you decide that you don't need a receptionist, or to keep to a schedule, and that sometimes you are just not in the mood to show up and cut hair. You can spin it any way you like - just tell us the truth. The way you are running your business now, is how you run it into the ground. Additionally, the person who replies to these reviews needs to be moved to another position. There is no openness to improving, learning, or respecting the experience of others. I was a bit worried when I read all the negative reviews on yelp, but my experience at Selfology was excellent. Peter was welcoming, kind, and professional. He was very careful and precise when cutting my hair, and it was obvious that he loves his craft. He even checked the temperature of the hair dryer on his own skin to make sure it wouldn't be too hot for mine. Focusing on these little details really make an experience special. It's true that the staff are difficult to reach by phone; however, I just stopped by when I was in the neighborhood and booked in person, and it was no problem. I booked two weeks in advance. My fiancé bought me a certificate for Valentine's Day on Living Social for a couples massage. When we arrived they refused to take our voucher because he had purchased a similar voucher last year. They said there is a limit of one voucher per person, even though it was a gift, and even though the original one he bought was not part of this promotion... It was over a year ago! Then the woman said we were told by another staff member that we would never be able to use another voucher again in future on our last visit - neither of us remember being told this and there was no proof of this, nothing we signed or anything to acknowledge this, and she couldn't tell us who the other staff was or how she knew specifically that we had been told this over a year ago. I booked in with this salon in September after purchasing a Groupon Voucher for a wash, cut & blow dry. I originally had booked in for October 19th and my appointment was confirmed, One week before my appointment they emailed to say there was an issue with my booking and they would have to reschedule for November 16th.. a month away which was fine I wasn't in any rush but this was still leaving me quite late after purchasing in September. I received yet another email this weekend to say there was an "unexpected conflict" in the schedule and they would have to change my appointment AGAIN to February 8th 2020???? So another 3 months away when I was originally book in October. This company is scamming people by taking hundreds of Groupon coupons but never actually being able to take the clients for the service they booked. I understand being rescheduled a day/ week later due to circumstances as I work in the beauty industry myself but to be rescheduled 3 times and for the appointments to be 3-5 month apart is rediculous. read more

He/she even went so far as to say that I must be technically challenged ! Seriously?! When a customer provides feedback accept it! But I would stop and think twice about supporting the owner Peter who clearly has zero cares about how his attitude reflects on his business. Not only did they get all our contact information wrong and cancelled on us last minute. But had to harass my lady on her personal social media when all she had said was she was disappointed that we waited 2 months to be cancelled on and the only make up day would be in 3 months. I hope that all these experienced individuals that work for Peter move on to a better facility that won't drag their talents through the mud from being represented by a thin skinned, self absorbed man child. I never write reviews but this WAS SO BAD i had to create an acct. Bought a socialshopper april 2015 and they were bragging about their 5star review on yelp.. (no kidding, you guys only have 2 reviews) Called the place and asked what deal i should get bec i wanted to get a root touch up (hair is light brown--but only lifted) and also subtle highlights for my above shoulder length hair. The guy suggested get option 2 $75. Went in, place was small (only 2 chairs for cut and style as well as 2 hair wash stations) but it was nice and neat. Had to wait 15 mins as "kei" the stylist was running behind. From then on things started to go downhill. I told him what I wanted and what I was SO TURNED OFF and annoyed about was his attitude. I honestly could not believe it. I was so nice and polite (as should be) yet he was condescending when talking to me. He insisted I had to bleach my hair to get to the beige brown i wanted. I insisted I did not want bleach but he kept insisting it was needed. I asked how light my dark hair can go without bleaching and he just insisted it would be uneven if i didn't bleach it. (I understand this but I came here for a stylist for a solution that would touch up my root without bleach or suggest an alternative that would suit my needs i.e. NO BLEACH) He was saying condescendingly that since my hair color right now is uneven (darker in the bottom lighter in the upper part) it wont matter if the color touch up would be lighter on the new growth since ive been walking around like this for 3 months. Im like in my head seriously?! Arent you a stylist this is what I came here for so you can correct/ tone or whatever you needed. He also said that the highlights won't show if I don't bleach it. What was annoying was he was talking to me like I knew how colour toning/dyeing works. Uhm I'm a client and you're supposed to explain it to me, don't expect me to know the process and talk to me in an annoyed tone because I asked for further explanation. He also insisted i pay $100 extra for this. Halfway i was thinking i would just not go through and go back to my regular salon (hive hair spa which is awesome and the staff is super nice and very polite). To add to the problem, he was talking so close to me and his breath was near halitosis status(no offense) to the point i had to hold my breath every time he talked to be polite. After him being sarcastic and talking down to me the whole time he ended up just dyeing my hair dark beige brown and having to pay extra $40 besides the $75. I honestly have never encountered such a rude stylist (never raised my voice or talked rude with him the whole time). I could not wait to leave the place and I couldn't believe that 2.5 hrs of my life has been wasted on dealing with this stylist. Walked away pissed and unsatisfied. The owner came when my session was 75% done. I realized it was him who i spoke to on the phone. He was really nice and kept asking how it was but during the payment, I just could not tip the stylist kei as his service was degrading and rude. UPDATE: I truly appreciate the efforts of the owner/s (and Im not blaming the owners for the bad experience) but this was truly out of the world waste of time and bad service for me. I am not interested in going back and getting a discount or whatever as I assume this would be awkward for both of the parties involved, and honestly I am just not interested and don't wanna waste my time with this brand. Bought a groupon here (as apparently many of these reviews start), and between the groupon review rating of 4.5 stars and comparing their normal charges to the groupon price, assumed I was getting a good deal. I did not have as many issues booking in as most people, I bought the groupon, tried calling (and as everyone says, got no answer), but decided to email instead, asking if there were any openings in the next 2 days. I got a text back the next day saying there was an opening that afternoon so I confirmed it. When I got to the shop, it seemed the hairdressers hadn't been notified there was a new booking, and either agreed to an extra service for a client earlier in the day or had been overbooked. They asked me to come back awhile later, which I was fine with, since my booking had been so last minute. They even offered an extra scalp massage, free of charge. The stylist was friendly and apologetic about the mix-up once I was in the chair, I asked for layers, a little longer than chin-length when dry, and side bangs. We did the wash and massage, and I was left for a few minutes for the conditioning treatment while the other client's hair was finished. I was overall very pleased with the first half of the service. Then, the actual haircut started. The stylist proceeded to cut my hair into a bob, chin-length while sopping wet, the same length all around. I thought about asking about the layers part way through, but figured she knew what she was doing - she had agreed with me earlier that lots of texture was good with the curls. By the time I realized she wasn't doing any, or the bangs, my hair was so short I didn't even want to ask. I'm extremely nonconfrontational, and she was very nice so I didn't want to make a scene, especially considering everything was already paid for through groupon.... but, in short, I hate my haircut, the appointment started late, and the longer I was there the more I noticed how dirty the place was. The towels holding tools had clumps of hair on them, and the towers were in total disarray and had hairs in them everywhere too. The chairs at the washing station (while nice that they massage) are stained, and the whole place needs a good sweeping. Giving 2 stars as benefit of the doubt that had I asked for more layering it would have turned out better. read more

Went here with a groupon not sure what to expect and I was blown away. It took me about a month and a half to get an appointment, this could be because their groupon was very popular - but it was definitely worth the wait. Received a full body 60 minute massage and a half hour facial. Amazing essential oils, organic facial products, and knowledge and choices given by the staff. Relaxing environment, clean, quiet, and sanitary. Definitely booking my appointment again here soon! read more

This place is Taiwanese-owned and has been around for a year or so. Located on Granville and 16th, public transit is available. It took me a while to find free parking around the area. The place is quite small, with maybe 2-3 working stations and a massage area at the back of the room. Salon was nice and clean with nice, modern designs. I went in for a haircut and hi-lights and was satisfied. I got a nice-looking Japanese girl as my hair stylist and she was very patient and attentive. I was offered a glass of water and chocolates (wow when do we ever get chocolates at salons??!). The best part was I was placed in a massage chair and got my back massaged while my hair got washed and massaged. I don't think I've ever had massage chairs before while having my hair washed. The only one thing that prevented me from giving them 5 stars was that they didn't offer a complimentary "bang trim" in a month like all the other salons do. They charge 15$ just to get bangs trimmed. Their services are pretty much around average in the neighborhood. read more

That was a week ago and nothing. I've asked them for a trade -in. What a ridiculous way to run a business. The most irritating part is they are still selling Groupons!! I loved this place! It is incredible! I was amazed by the service. Massage was very professional, i felt so relaxed and energetic at the same time after. I had pain in back and neck and now it feels way better! I scheduled my next appointment right that because it's very cheap for what you get! First spa visit is $69 and you can buy 4 more for $69 each right after: for two hours full body and face massage! And service is wonderful! Highly recommend this place! read more

I bought a Groupon and made an appointment. when I went in the hair stylist said I didn't need everything that the Groupon was for and that he would just trim my hair and let me use the Groupon at a later date. So I payed him for the cut and when trying to make an appointment at a later date to use the Groupon they would no longer honor it !? I got balyage and a cut done by Kawal and she was AMAZING. The hair colour was a bit lighter than I wanted when she was done, so she re-toned it for me right then and there. I am THRILLED with the final result....and I rarely leave salons happy with my hair cut or dye job. Kawal was friendly and committed to me loving my hair. She gave an amazing head massage, made me a coffee, and threaded my upper lip....all for a very reasonable price. I will definitely be back to see Kawal! Holy shit. This place is messed. And I'm never ever ever buying a 'deal' from Groupon for an unknown salon ever again!! I wanted grey highlights and got them but the rest of my hair became red. And then the stylist applied a blue toner, which calmed the red, but gave me grey-blue highlights. The stylist gave me a slight trim. The next morning I washed my hair and I had orange frosted tips in the back and the haircut was horrendous. I demanded to come back to get my hair fixed and the stylist right away said 'oh God' and proceeded to give ideas on how she can fix my haircut. No thank you. Just get rid of the orange tips and I'll have my regular stylist cut my hair thank you very much. I don't want to give the stylist's name b/c she was very nice and did accommodate me in trying to help me out. However, i didn't get what I wanted. Not even close. Another patron was crying while I was getting the color fixed b/c her hair was greyer than she wanted. Funny enough, I had literally broken and cried in the morning! 2 victims in 24 hours!?!? I had a voucher for a 60min massage and 30min facial by Katie. I feel the setup is somewhat different for a spa as you have to walk thru the hair salon part before entering into the spa at the back. But once the door is closed, I started to enjoy the clean simple interior decor. Katie does an excellent job on both the massage and the facial. She does not say a lot, which I enjoyed, as I came for a relaxing experience and not a social event. Her presence and non-verbals made my experience very enjoyable and relaxing. I particularly loved the facial. I instantly saw positive results after just a 30 min facial! I enjoyed the facial so much that I had to buy some of the Sea Flora products home to try. Katie is very knowledge and very patient with explaining the products to me and also allowed me space and time to play with the products myself too. She is not pushy at all which made me feel more comfortable with buying! I also liked the fact that they have shower facility even though it is a relatively small spa. Selfology replied to my previous review and questioned my legitimacy. Peter asked my to email them regarding the situation, which I did. I got an email back very promptly, and he sincerely apologized. He believes the stylist I had that day "may have been a little rushed" and did not inform me. Selfology offered me another session with another stylist or willing to give me a refund. I never asked for any compensation as what has already done (in this case, not done) cannot be amended. I am not sure if I will ever go back... but it was a nice gesture that they are offering to make things right. read more

Before booking, I should have read the responses they've written to the bad reviews here on Yelp. The massage chair was awesome when you get your hair washed and it's definitely nice to watch Netflix and eat chocolate while you get your hair done. I usually won't use Groupon especially for the hair but they had a $29 special for scalp massage, cut, style and conditioning and I was looking for a new stylist close to home do thought I'd give it a try. I got a stylist named Hikari who's Japanese. She was very beautiful, stylish, polite, gave me a great scalp massage and a great hair style. I liked that 50% of the studio was windows, she brought me coffee without even asking and she took her time. She's new to Vancouver from Japan and most likely in. Condescending and rude. That's the only way to describe how these people behave. They won't own up to their mistakes and place the blame on everyone else as if we were the ones taking smoke breaks in the middle of highlights and then eating food. They offer great deals but when it comes down to the moment they back out offer something else then last second they back out again and charge you full price. They really don't value their customers who have been displeased (and there's a lot of them) and speak up they instead mock them and laugh all about it at their salon while maintaining they have a strong following which is totally false. I have had possibly the worst retail experience in my 53 years of existence at selfology. I initially spent three days trying to book an appointment, assumed it was booked and showed up to be told that I did not have an appointment. When I suggested their booking system was not effective I was told I was wrong and she had no interest in hearing my concerns. Suby , a staff member there booked me an appointment in person for the following week, and I had received a confirmation from their online booking site indicating I had an appointment for yesterday. I showed up, again was told I don't have an appointment, was treated so poorly I was flabbergasted by the rudeness. Told that I could not use a Groupon. When I asked to speak to the owner of the company with an absolute Zen approach, I was told there was no owner but rather the salon was co owned by the staff (???). Low and behold the owner walked through the door who was equally as abusive (I do not use the word loosely) and kicked me out of the store. I would say the behavior was just short of filing a serious complaint as I felt threatened. Short of that I will share my experience and hope that the universe does not support a company with such poor behavior and ethics. My boyfriend and I bought a groupon for a couple massage and then choice of facial or foot massage. The services were AMAZING! I was in a post massage/facial daze the rest of the day. The only things stopping a 5 star review from us are that we had to wait 2 months to actually get an appointment. And that no one greeted us when we arrived. There is no clear "reception" area. So we sat awkwardly for about 10 minutes while the woman cutting hair like 5feet from us ignored us completely and we wondered what to do.
