We went to Selva last night for my husband's birthday, and it did not disappoint! This is the perfect place for a special occasion like that. We ate outside, which was lovely on such a warm night (the inside of the restaurant looks beautiful, too!). Christina, our server, was attentive and friendly. The food is absolutely delicious; I would eat ALL of it all over again. And since we were celebrating, there was a little "happy birthday" sign on the table, and they brought us a complimentary dessert. First, I want to say the service was exceptional! Regrettably, I can't remember my servers name but he was phenomenal for the entire dinner service!!! He recommended a few red wines to have with our steak and brought us some samples. We started dinner with the scallops appetizer and I highly recommend it. Two large scallops topped with a basil pesto and served on top of a sweet potato puree. It was delightful. The basil pesto really balanced the dish and when I commented to a gentleman that I think was the manager, he brought more basil pesto to accomplish my steak. For my entree, I ordered the NY strip and truffle risotto. They were delicious! The steak was accompanied with a veal demi-glacé that was addictive, I kept going back for more. While the steak was slightly overcooked, it was still delicious. They offered to recook it but I refused. Because my steak temperature wasn't perfect, they brought us a complimentary dessert which was a mousse surrounded by chocolate. Absolutely love this place! I have been in town exploring the city this week and stumbled across this gem. I have been to this restaurant now 4 times at different times (dinner twice, happy hour, & late night happy hour) and each time the service is amazing and the food wows me!!! The ambiance is lovely and each time I sat at the bar it was super fun and lively. I had Trevor as my bartender a few nights and he really made me feel at home. My drink of choice is the Pisco Sour and they make a great one! The passion fruit one is awesome too. I also have tried the following food dishes that knocked my socks off: Lomo Saltado, Skirt Steak, Truffle Parmesan Cheese Fries, & Empanadas (beef). I will definitely be back to try more things. As an out of towner, half snow bird from Indiana. This restaurant will meet all your upscale needs. The atmosphere and drinks are great. The staff is helpful and tells you what you need to hear to order your best experience. The selection of ceviches was special, we went the wahoo and the spicy tuna. Both were stars of the show. My father won't touch sushi and he gave both dishes two thumbs up. For the main, we went with the rack of lamb per our server's recommendation. And as an avid meat eating midwesterner, the lamb was more tender than at home. And that's saying something. My aunt got the salmon and my mother got the paella, both of which I tried and were divine. The place can get a little loud in busy hours but your server makes sure to speak up with confidence so we can have our best experience possible. Will be back. read more

Sadly the ceviche was way to sour with way too much lime juice so it was line eating a tad lemon with every bite My husband ordered The Malbec short ribs which were dry and had no taste of wine whatsoever and I do not know where the Demi glacé was supposed to be. I excitingly ordered the duck, my favorite protein, it was so over cooked and dry with no rendering that it tasted like dry chicken and the accompanying risotto was so thick it was like eating baby food. They gave us literally no time between courses to digest our food before the next course and was served I am a Chef and have spent many years in Mexico eating and cooking ceviche as it should be. Regardless weeknights or weekends, you will see this restaurant is always packed with customers. That is a good sign and a bad sign. Without reservation, you will have to wait long or you might have to eat at the corner of the restaurant (dark inside in case if you don't like it). I tried three different main entrees and 6 different appetizers. They were well presented and delicious. Their service is attentive and great (in Sarasota, you normally receive great services though). Their entrees are pricier to locals and some visitors depending on where you come from. We start every meal sharing the Selva Caesar -- Romaine lettuce, manchego cheese, red onions & crispy plantains with a rocoto dressing. It's fork-ready and unique. From there you just can't make a mistake. Not that I'm in a rut, but I regularly order the Malbec Braised Short Ribs -- Slow braised Short Ribs in Selva's own sweet demi-glace served with Israeli curry couscous risotto and roasted asparagus. We came here on a recommendation of a neighbor, it exceeded our expectations. We came here to have their strip steak and all 3 of is got the Grilled Grouper over veggies, tomatoes & pearl couscous in a light red sauce. It was a wow dish, amazing, better than delicious! Our server was top notch quality too. The decor was a bit dark and a touch of 90s Miami feel yet the food far exceeds the decor. My boyfriend & I had an amazing evening at Selva. We made a dinner reservation through OpenTable, but heard great things about their happy hour so we arrived early to check it out. Happy hour is only offered in their bar/lounge area from 5-7PM, so we found two open chairs at the bar and started ordering away. Both the happy hour food and drink menu is so affordable and the plates were decently portioned. We ended up filling up on the happy hour menu that we cancelled our dinner reservation and hung out at the bar for 2 hours. I would like to mention that the happy hour food menu has a lot of the same exact dishes that the regular menu has. We tried the below dishes; ranked from my favorite to least favorite (but all were yummy!): -Short rib spring roll ($13) -Beef Empanadas ($7) - Ordered 2 of these since it only comes 1 per order -Skirt steak with sweet plantains ($13) - Each ordered 1 -Chilean Sea Bass Croquettes ($11) I highly recommend this happy hour - One of the best I've had in ambiance, price and food quality/portion! read more

This place invented the word shmancy, as in fancy shmancy! But if you're looking for a special night out or just want to feel indulgent over apps and cocktails, this is your place! We sat outside on the patio after a short wait and I need you to know that the butter that comes out with the freshly baked bread is truffle infused (truffle lovers unite!) That's when I knew we made the right choice. I ordered a passionfruit jalapeño margarita and it was simply TO DIE FOR, outrageously good...maybe the best cocktail I've had in...forever? My husband's ginger old fashioned was also phenomenal and he couldn't get enough of it. So now for the tricky part: we didn't want to go all in with entrees (it was super late and the prices are high) so we did a tasting instead: two apps consisting of grilled octopus over potato salad and diver scallops over mashed sweet potato. The presentation? Otherworldly. The flavor? Wonderful. But were they the best scallops or octopus I've ever had? No, not really. Finally, we finished with a peachy, bourbon-y bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and adorable cookie-like flower on top. It was perfect, enough for 2 or 3 to split and once again, a winning presentation! We'd come back for sure, especially for the drinks and service alone, but it's gonna be a sticker shock for most diners! I recommend you try it at LEAST for drinks and an app to start off your night or for dessert to cap things off. read more

A little bit on the higher in, this is a nice little spot for a mid-range dinner date. A touch of fanciness, fun, cool, and some sophisticated sexiness without completely breaking the bank and flavors that will take you on a little vacation. If you're worried about budget, go with a couple appetizers to share and you and your party will be set for the night. I'm not into seafood, but the other two people are, so know that this place has a lot of seafood. There are a few dishes for us land eaters, but I'd say about 60% of their menu is seafood. I am one to try anything once, so with that, I did try the tuna taretare and the octopus ceivche and it wasn't bad at all. My favorite though, is the Chicken Eggrolls. They were decadent and AMAZING to the point that I would order two of those and call it a day for my meal. Of course I was envious of those that surrounded me that ordered full entrees. I was so excited to dine at Selva Grill because I wanted some good authentic Latin/Peruvian cuisine and of course, I was impressed by their highly rated Yelp reviews! We made reservations for outdoor dining. Indoor seating is available. Due to COVID, masks are required upon arrival only. Selva Grill is located in the heart of downtown Sarasota. I don't really drink, but it's the holidays! So, to kick off the holiday season, I ordered their popular Grapefruit Basil martini. It was perfect ~ refreshing. When I dine out, my favorite thing to do is to order tapas or family style so I can try as many food items ;) So that's what we did. We ordered the skirt steak, the braised short ribs, veggie + beef empanadas, ceviche and Marin sea bass. We topped off our dinner with "pot of mousse." Skirt Steak on plantains - this was my fave dish! Flavorful and cooked perfectly 5/5. Braised Short Ribs sweet demi-glace served with Israeli curry couscous risotto and roasted asparagus - the ribs literally fell off the bone! Delicious 5/5 Empanadas - these were good. The spinach veggie was actually better than the beef. 4/5 Ceviche + octopus - refreshing and tasty 5/5 Mirin Roasted Sea Bass served with corn custard flan, sauteed baby bok choy and a black bean puree - so flavorful and delicious 5/5 Pot of Mousse with bittersweet and white chocolate mousses, dark chocolate and cappuccino tartufo chocolate ~ the mousse is so smooth but it's really challenging yet fun to eat 5/5 Overall, I had a great experience here. After a rough day of travel delays, we needed a restaurant that could provide good food and a lively atmosphere. Selva Grill delivered. I made reservations same day. They have a small patio outside, but I opted inside given that it was raining upon our arrival (it quickly stopped). We were immediately led to our table. The place was busy with small groups celebrating birthdays, dates celebrating anniversaries and people at the bar celebrating reunions. Yes, this place was bustling. The menu has creative cocktails, tapas and delicious looking entrees. I was struggling to make a decision, but our server was fantastic and helped us every step of the way. I would have ordered just an entree, but my date insisted on a variety of tapas. The Selva Wild Ceviche? Very Good. Empanadas? Good. I couldn't try bites of any more tapas, knowing I had an entree coming. Glad I did, because the Sea Bass was excellent. I loved this dish.
