I don't write reviews often. But I'm frustrated after the experience I had here. Honestly, partially my fault for going here. The people seemed nice, but once I tried on the dress she wouldn't tell me how much it was going to cost until AFTER she did all the pinning. All I needed was a simple hem of the bottom of the dress, nothing more. Then once the pins were in, and I took the dress off, she told me $120. I was SHOCKED considering it is a simple 2 layer bridesmaid dress, and other places quoted $65 for SAME DAY alteration. I brought the dress in on a Monday, and was not able to pick it up until Friday afternoon. She even called me Friday morning to pick it up later in the afternoon because it still wasn't ready. DO NOT GO HERE. These people seem nice but if there is ever an issue with an invoice they will blame you for the mistake. I have spent almost $2,000 tailoring clothing with Senel during the past two months. I brought another Jacket and two pairs of Jeans to them. The Owner wrote down $130 total for this new job. At time of payment, they calculated a different total of $200, despite their previous price quote. They claim they forgot to add the Jeans into the price. Keep in mind, my Jacket was barely altered. Instead of valuing the customer, as I give them lots of business, they argued with me about the $70 price difference. They are very stubborn. Now they have lost a good customer. read more

Ruined my pants and said "I never make a mistake, you made the mistake." I took brand new jeans here they completely ruined. I took the exact shoes in with me when I tried on, and they turned out 2 inches too short. She was completely rude and said "everything she does is perfect" without any responsibility and refused to refund me. My new pants are ruined and I'm out a large amount of cash from tailoring that was not what I asked for. read more

I had two sports coats that needed the sleeves shortened and to be let out a bit. The coats were too tight l but I loved the colors so took my chances. To my surprise they both came put perfect and I'm very grateful, they do men's clothes very well. Prices are a little higher than an expensive dry cleaner but if you want a perfect fit; I highly recommend Senel. read more

Senel has come highly recommended. I thought she was a secret until i walked into the tiny shop covered in gowns. I went for a simple hem on my knee length wedding dress. Well, before i could open my mouth, Senel was pulling and tucking and pinning away. i panicked a bit worrying the dress would be too tight since i had no intention of taking it in. she assured me that this is how my dress is supposed to fit. the alterations were $95 and done in one week. Nefise Senel was introduced to me by a friend of mine. I feel extremely lucky to find her. Thanks to her, I now have a whole wardrobe of favorite clothes that I haven't worn for years. The quality of work is just remarkable and at the right price. Above all she is a purely honest business owner. She is upfront with the necessary work needed based on your expectations. Hence, she won't make you spend more than what what you should. Although she does mostly work for females, I've had her tailor all my business suits to slim fit style. As for her personality, she is a lovely lady, who is giving her best no matter who you are. If you're not happy, she is not happy. She will do revisions until you feel 100%. I took my wedding dress to Senel about 2 months before my wedding date. She did an ok job. The things I had her do was: fix the ripped tulle overlay on the back (I got the dress from Bridal Garden, a wonderful not-for-profit discount gown store), shorten the dress to fit my height, and add a bustle for my train. She charged me around $350 for the job, which I think was reasonable. My dress was a mermaid-style gown with beautiful silk tulle overlay that gathers in the back. She did a good job at fixing the ripped parts, and you can never tell that there flaws with the dress. The bottom though, was a different story. She was in a hurry to a doctor's appointment when she was cutting the bottom. She did it so fast that the cut was VERY UNEVEN. I had jagged edges all around the bottom of my dress and I was very very upset. I was going to let it go but the more I look at it the more upset I got. I ended up going back there and asking her to fix it. She first said "OK but some of these parts were cut so short that there's nothing I can do." I was FURIOUS! The reason that the parts were so short is because you MESSED UP! Don't tell me that! I think it's really unfortunate that my experience turned out with such a sad twist. She really would've gotten a 5 star from me if only she cut my dress with a little bit more care. I think a main thing in dealing with her is to call her out on the spot. I wish I did that when I knew on the spot that she was f*ing up the bottom trim. read more

Nefise Senel is the most detailed, sweetest, experienced tailor you'll find! I love her! She was referred to me by Vera Wang Bridesmaids since they do not do alterations there. They suggested 2 tailors that they trusted with their bridesmaid dresses and Senel was one of them. So, my 5 bridesmaids had their dresses done there. Since then- I have tailored 3 bridesmaid dresses over the past 3 years where I was in the wedding party, my Chinese qi pao (which is pretty complex to alter), 2 cocktail dresses, and a formal gown. My husband has also brought suits in to have done and he has been very happy with her work! I would not trust anyone else with my formal wear or suits. read more

Despite the misleadingly glowing reviews I had an atrocious experience. Basically she refused to adjust the sleeves on a suit dress that I needed shortened half an inch. While I was still trying to understand why she wouldn't do what I had asked (as a paying customer) she chided me in saying "she's the professional" "she know's what's best" and basically I (the paying customer) know nothing about anything and I should probably crawl under a rock and be ashamed that I would want to ask for something so ridiculous. WTF. Like...Whoa. Wen't down a few more blocks to the lovely (read: non-hostile) alterations lady at Suits and Skirts Cleaners. She totally understood that I needed more movement in the dress by shortening the sleeves 1/2 an inch. She even thought of adjusting the arm hole for greater movement. If you're needing a professional tailor to "work with you" this is NOT the place to go. read more

This is by far the best place I've found for tailoring in the neighborhood. She is very skilled and attentive to detail. I trusted her with my wedding dress (complicated tailoring at the bodice with lots of beading and lace) and she did an AMAZING job. Plus, shop is a pleasure to visit and prices are more than fair. This place is not cheap though! $55 to hem a silk dress (with lining). $20 to take a pair of pants in on the waist. Are these average prices? I am in the same boat as Hadley S. I brought my Bridesmaid dress to Senel because I found it on yelp, and have the same concern that I am paying too much- $185. (She gives you the option to put half down and pay the rest later). I know that these alterations can be pricey, but I am paying more than twice as much as anyone else in the party. Some of the girls have more complicated changes than I do, and are paying considerably less. However, she was thorough, attentive, extremely friendly, and knew her stuff. I took 2 pairs of pants and a skirt to be hemmed at Senel, because it had largely glowing reviews on Yelp. I had a similar negative experience as a couple other Yelpers. As I tried on the clothes, I asked her to hem the long pants and skirt shorter than what she was suggesting, and she argued with me saying she knew what would work best. After I received them, I was still stepping on the length as I tried to walk. I went back to her to show her the problem and had the WORST customer experience. I explained what happened and she explicitly told me she played no part in the issue and it was my fault for not making her hem it shorter. After the expensive $70 she charged for the 3 items, she said it would be another $35 to hem shorter. From there, it devolved into a shouting match and I literally had to leave the store to end the conversation. I'm so confused by this experience. If you're in the service industry, shouldn't you have an iota of customer service? I've certainly never gotten into a shouting match at a store before. read more

OK. I'm glad that some people had good experience at Senel. I read reviews on Yelp and that was the reason why I went there... I took my bridal gown there for very simple alterations. I could wear it the way it was, but decided to make some adjustments. BIG MISTAKE! The atmosphere there is very nice, lady checked out my gown, said that it's very nice and told me that she'll make my bustier smaller, check beading and steam it. All together $375.00. When I came to my first fitting - the right side of my corset was all wrinkled. She said that it's the corset's fault and "not her business". I told her to change it. When I start to check beading - all threads that were there before and needed to be cut - were untouched and she was cutting them out while I was showing her where to cut. The hook on the back was attached to the lace, not to the all thicker part of the fabric! One wrong move and my dress would be ruined! I hope that readers would understand what I'm trying to say... My second fitting - bustier was fixed, but her steam didn't work correctly (Senel and her husband were trying to steam my dress while I was waiting there, not before)... Plus, my dress was hanging in their place without the bag I brought it in! It was getting dusty every day! So, the result. I'm 17 days before my wedding day... I can't wear the dress Senel altered for $375.00. I went to the store and bought another dress and having my alterations at the store. Say that I was upset and stressed out - it's like to say nothing. Thank God it was easy enough to find brand new dress. When I took my dress to the place I bought it - they said that alterations were made WRONG. I walked to Senel's place with the smile on my face and walked out crying. She has a lot of gowns in her place, along with bridesmaid's dresses. She doesn't have time for you, don't even bother going there. You will hear this: "Very nice", "Ok", "Not my business", "You know it's bad, nobody else will see"... I'm planning on taking some actions about that, but not before my wedding. Some minor adjustments that she suggested around the bust made it so much easier to dance the night away without apprehension. The bustle held securely through the evening. This place is horrific. They look adorable and charge you an arm and a leg. I went in to get the straps on my bridesmaid dress shortened and they charged me $40. I did it because I thought they would do a great job. Bad choice. Not only was it over priced from the start, but she actually removed the hooks on the back of my dress for no reason! I don't have time to get it fixed here because I'm traveling for the wedding. When I went back to address it she told me it was probably like that when I bought it! It's of course was not. Needless to say, they would not reimburse me, even for the amount I now need to pay to get it fixed again. Horrible customer service. Horrible experience. read more

Over the past 3 years I have taken 2 bride maid dresses and some regular dresses here. She had done a fabulous job and the dresses were altered perfectly. Although, the alterations were more expensive than anywhere else. Recently, I took my wedding dress to her. After a lot of negotiation, she charged me 450 dollars. (The quotes I got elsewhere were all below 350). Every time I went to try on the dress, the store was crowded and I did not get a lot of attention. My wedding dress alterations turned out to be a disappointment. ( I gave it to her 4 months in advance... ) I needed to push to get her to hem the inside layers, she did not sew a sturdy bustle and it ended up not holding up during my wedding. The pads in my breast showed in profile. In all fairness, it was a difficult job, but I feel that she should have told me ahead of time if she could not do it. I certainly gave her enough time. My sister and maid of honor also had her dress altered at the shop (with short notice) and she over did it. It did not fit and basically ruined the dress. Granted that my sister should have tried on the dress prior to leaving the store, but Senel, charging her 80 dollars should take some blame too. I am really glad that she has built a successful business because she is a great tailor, but lately, I think she is too busy. For me, there will not be second chances. read more

I am 5'3" and a size 00 so almost all of my dresses and skirts need altering. I've lived in Manhattan 8 years and Senel is far better than any other tailor I have ever tried, including the upscale Cameo Cleaners. Her work is high quality so you can trust her with expensive clothes. I live by Flatiron building and walk past 10 other tailor shops to get work done by her. It cost me $300 for minimal alterations (on a dress that cost less) that were poorly done. I saw a trend for overcharging for dissatisfactory work & decided I had to join yelp to voice this. Just because you live in Murray Hill does not mean you must overpay for crappy service. Girls if a dress means something to you & you will be photographed in it do not take it here! SO its been a few months after my wedding. I think Senel did an OK job. I dont think it was spectacular for the 500 bucks i paid her to take in my dress at the bust and waist and shorten it. She left alot of loose strings hanging and didnt really clean it up as nice as i would have liked. ALthough the dress fit nice i also noticed the sides of my dress were a bit uneven. Considering it was 2 weeks before my wedding i just didnt even want to bother with it anymore. I mean no one noticed but i noticed it personally. At the end of the day I just didnt want to deal with her anymore. She couldnt speak english well and there was always alot of people there. i felt a bit rushed. I assume she used to be great! but i would try to find someone else if you are very particular about ur alterations. read more

I was referred here by the Bridal Garden, and it was a disaster. I don't know the quality of Ms. Senel's work on regular clothing, but she charged me $300 for terrible work on my wedding dress, and I would warn any bride against going here. The only thing she got right was the hem. She took the hips out in such a way that the seams completely showed. The bodice didn't fit properly. My dress was strapless and I wanted straps added--she used a cheap synthetic material that did not match the dress in color or in quality. It was horrible. I felt cheated, and worst of all, I felt like I couldn't even trust her to fix the mistakes if I complained. I had to take the dress to another tailor two weeks before the wedding and pay another $250 to salvage it. read more

I am a two-dress bride. My first dress I took to Madame Paulette and was not thrilled with their customer service. I bought my second dress two & a half weeks before my wedding & it was recommended that I try Senel. They were an absolute godsend. I went in there terrified they were going to be unable to make major alterations in only 2 weeks and that they were going to severely overcharge me. Neither occurred. They were so kind, easy to work with & very reasonably priced. I went in on a Wednesday, she took note of all alterations & had me come back the next Tuesday. We reviewed everything again, and then the Tuesday before my wedding, the dress was done! It was perfect. I had the whole top taken in a few inches, the hips let out, layers removed & the dress was shortened. It was a beautiful vintage style lace overlay dress & I was very nervous about the lace getting messed up in alterations - it was PERFECT. I could not recommend them more. Please go here instead of wasting your money on a more known staple like Madame Paulette. read more
